Re: [doc] something silly..manual to auto

Tracey, you really must get this looked at. From what you're saying, it
just needs a linkage adjustment, but if you continue to give it "a good
shove", then you risk damaging gearbox internals which will mean a much
bigger repair bill down the line.

Do something for me: With the stick in neutral, just gently wiggle the
stick forward and backward. If it has more than 1/2" of play in it, and
you can hear a definite rattling under your elbow, the pivot bolt is
loose or bent and will cause no end of problems. This is a £10 part and
takes less than an hour to replace. A gearbox rebuild on the other hand
comes in at well over £150 and the labour on that is several hours. The
roll pin on the second gear selector fork is notorious for snapping -
not because it's a design flaw but because this gear gets the most "slam
shifts" - accellerating away from a standstill - and once it breaks,
second is difficult to find, especially when downshifting from 3rd to
2nd. To replace ths part worth pence means stripping the gearbox down.
If Steve Strelczak is reading this, I'll let him tell you the difference
a new pivot bolt made to his gearshift. His car gained the most
noticable improvement of the ones we've done.

Best Wishes

Martin
