FWIW, I paid Transcar $1300 USD in August last year (about £900 back
then) to pick up Flopsy as a non runner from San Francisco and take to
the docks at Long Beach in LA, then from LA to Tilbury in Essex. It
was then a further £470 in Customs fees, which included 5% duty and
de-vanning the container plus some other stuff. It is worth bearing in
mind, that the more people 'share' a container, the lower the
devanning charges will be as the costs are spread. If you have a 20ft
container to yourself for instance, you will pay more then say 3
people sharing a 40ft container. 
The ship took about 4wks to arrive in England from LA and about
another 7 days to be devanned and clear Customs.
