The gearbox does have it's own mounts so could stay in
there without the engine. I would still put some
support under it though.

engine? Can I 
disengage the 'box from the block and leave it in the
chassis? 

I'm quite sure the engine will eventually go back in
but not before 
I've "had my way" with it first. ;o)
