I'll get the garage to try shortening it tomorrow.

I was pleased that the chassis plate came off ok, with no seized bolts, and
that there were no nasty surprises lurking underneath. It all looks quite
clean.

The only chassis rust I have is at the rear where some of the epoxy has
cracked off and surface rust has developed. What is the recommended
treatment for that, underseal?
