Hi Paul, I had the exact same thing happen to me about a year ago....only in 1st or 2nd gear... Similar thoughts about dirty fuel, but other members advised that this is unlikely. Mine turned out to be a fuel pipe split - just around the julilee clip that secures the pipe to the top of the fuel pump! Air was getting in I suppose, so I went in through the panel behind the spare wheel, exposed the fuel pump and piping, cut 1/2 inch off, checked the pipe due to its age (fine) and it was an instant cure! I don't know why my problem was only in 1st and 2nd gear; and obviously it was horrendous going up very steep hills! I hope it's as simple...! Good luck!
