Re: [doc] Another problem! (off subject)

There is a Corporate edition where you don't need to activate it.
You can also disable activated versions by running a certain file in safe mode of XP.

Microsoft are clamping down on this by checking legality of your home PC's serial number/ activation before you can download updates, or you can get them from a friend.

Isn't XP activated so it will only work on the machine its installed on and
can't be shared around?

If this is the case you may have to buy a new one.

XP Home or Professional?

>From being a network administrator as well as automation programmer/
comissioner, I have all versions of windows on CD (apart from 64bit ones)
if you have the original serial number. The license sticker on the PC
should tell you which one you have.

If you have a branded PC like Dell, Compaq, HP etc then the disc you get
is a "factory installed" CD which is a pre-installation of the PC with all
drivers/ software on etc. You can download the media again (using a friends
computer) as long as you have the Asset Tag or Serial number. This would
include any bundled software like MS Works/ Office etc.

If your PC is a home made one and you don't have a serial number then you
need a replacement copy, for a legit copy ask Paul Birks.

If you are installing from scratch do a low level format on the hard disk
first to remove all trace of any files the previous owner may have had on
there. You can't be too careful these days.
