Hi Mike,
I drove (for quite some distance) recently a 328iSE Convertible -
quite frankly, going by how highly you rate the E36, I was very
disappointed with the build quality (panels rattling all over the
place), the scuttle shake and the actual drive of the thing. It hadnt
even done that many miles (about 40 odd thou) and was wearing very
badly. Later that day, I drove a 900 Convertible with 115,000 miles
(2.0 Auto) of the same age, and it was so much nicer, more solid
feeling, less rattles, quieter - I was very surprised.
Also, as I know several people who currently/used to work BMW and have
done for 9yrs+, I am aware of the problems with the E36 (swimming pool
for a boot in your convertible anyone?) and that is another reason for
not wanting one.
I know the Megane and Astra arn't perfect, but I know them well, and
if the budget wont stretch to a Saab 900 then I'll probably look out
for one of those instead.
Regards
Claire
