Hi Chris
Above, shall we say, the "crotch" of the timing cover directly under the
water pump? That's unusual. For it to leak out of the timing cover
through that part of the seal means the oil flowing uphill. The timing
cover just gets oil thrown around under it at no real pressure and I
wouldn't expect anything more than a tiny bit even if the gasket was
leaking because it'd just want to run back down into the timing cover.
Does it look dry around the spark plugs? That'll rule out rocker cover
gaskets.
Under to the water pump are two bungs - the larger of the two is a cap
for the high pressure oil feed, the maller is a cap directly into the
crank case. Of the two, the former would create quite a leak. I don't
think they have a habit of cracking though! What does happen rarely is
for the block to get a hole in the "v" which goes into the crank case.
