Re: [doc] Re: Driving a D b4 registering

Hi Claire

Just got back from work. Received a call yesterday at 10.00am to say that I
would be on standby and a second call at 10.30am for emergency aid. I didn't
book of till 2.30am this morning and back again 8.00am. Most of the public
were a great help but you don't arf get some *$%-holes who thinks you main
priority is to find them transport to get them home, rather than assisting
the injured, evacuation and protecting the rest of the public.

However with regard to the other. the law stands now that the vehicle must
be licensed and registered immediately when imported. Ref
:-http://www.dvla.gov.uk/public/consult/veh_inspec/vi_perm_imp.htm

Providing you have insurance cover, the Police will allow you to take you
vehicle from the port, to your home address or garage. From there it must be
MOT'd, pre booked in as  previously mentioned and should the VRO require to
see the vehicle to and from there on a pre booked slot. Before, even though
not written, you were allowed about a month from imported date.

If you use you car on other occasions, yes you might get away with it but
with the ANPR cameras around now, logging date/time/place, its becoming more
unlikely, and if caught the VRO/DVLA can even refuse to register the vehicle
when you apply. And should you have an accident, even if its not your fault,
the law will state. Unlicensed vehicle, shouldn't have been there, if wasn't
there, no accident would have occurred, your fault.

Mark

Hi Craig,

I'm not sure what the "letter of the law is" - but I'm sure Mark Bourne
will be able to clarify that one.

I did drive Flopsy for a bit with her USA licence plates on (she was
insured and MOT'd on her VIN number) which I know was a bit naughty,
Officer, but I'm an impatient sod!!

I also know of another club member (you know who you are!!) who drove
his car for about 2yrs with the US plate on the back, and a UK sized
plate on the front that had the same numbers and letters as the USA one
(so in a way it looked like a private plate).

I guess the main problem with driving on US plates rather then UK ones,
is that if the car is not UK registered then it does not have a tax
disc.  Therefore, depending on your council, if it's parked up on the
road somewhere it can be given a 7 day notice, clamped, then removed and
crushed under DVLA's new rules for dealing with untaxed cars.

Plus with all these ANPR cameras at the moment, big brother is
definitely watching..

OK guys thanks for the advice

Let me clarify my position...my car is at my father in laws garge 80
plus miles from my house.

I am hoping that it will pass the MOT tomorrow...there have been
many probs (There is no such thing as a cheap D and Chris P's
statment of a car in american dollars equates to english pounds has
come true).

Anyway, i have AON insurance, i will have the MOT, i have an
american plate on the back only!

Can i drive it legally back to my house and then register it...i
cannot leave it up there and wait for registering as there is no
under cover storage available.

Plan B is to use a transporter but i would rather save the money.

I was thinking about making a card plate on the front replicating
the one on the back just to drive home and tape it on../.will this
draw more/less attention

please help
