Could also be a short in lighter socket.

Right by where the wires plug into the bottom of the
socket is the metal bracket that the gear stick
surround screws into.  This is earthed and I've had it
on my car where the live from the lighter touches this
bracket and arcs.

AS FOR THE MANUAL TO AUTO!!!

A friend of mine is at the moment converting his from
Auto to manual as 
there is less to go wrong with a manual - now auto
computers are probably 
better now but do you really want to change a car that
was born a manual is 
listed in the history books as being a manual???
