If you buy a new mode switch, it will turn the AC on when set to demist. 
It was an alteration on later cars. As far as I can see, on the switch 
we have in stock, it's just a jump-wire across two of the three pins on 
the back of the switch.

My Xantia turns the AC on when set to demist whether I like it or not!
