Nick (and Paul) R12 drop-in replacements are commonly available over here. R134a works at a higher pressure so things like the condenser and compresor have a shorter life. I can put you onto a place in Aylesbury who did mine for a very reasonable sum. It's charged with R413 and works a treat on a hot day (cycles more often on a colder day)
