Hi Chris et al,
I've talked with both Lance and Garry
Hewitt on the phone ( a long long time back), Garry put me in
contact with Dave Howarth.
Back in 98-99 I chatted with Dave quite a few
times (too bad he didnt have internet back then - still doesn't?) and he put me
onto the D in the museum near Manchester ( The midland motor museum).
This was basically a boarding house for cars, the
owners would pay to have the vehicles stored and maintained and
displayed. The D I was looking at was a rhd, however it wasnt as
good as I had expected for 40k (pounds, I'm using a US setting for the keyboard
so no pound sign), the old barn that had been done up to house the various
vehicles wasnt temperature or humidity controlled, there were even the droppings
from a few pigeons on the car.
The vin was 12173 with
a production date of 1982, I thought all euros were 1981? The panels had
numerous blemishes ( possible where droppings had been washed off) All
the headlining etc needed new glue, there were a few dents in the
doors and I'm not too sure the car was regularily started. There was also
evidence of rust on the frame and roof member(? maybe just discolouration).
So I made my offer, the museum owner said he'd pass on the offer, and I heard
nothing.
Just recently a RHD ( US car , local conversion)
sold here at Shannons auction in Sydney for AU$41k, thats about 14.5k (pounds).
I'm in the market for a D but I have to weigh up whether I can afford a euro. I
have to pay shipping, import duty (despite being 2nd hand and its age) and of
course pay our new GST (similar to VAT) on it as well. This makes your 25k into
about 32.5k which is about AU$95k ( almost 2yrs earnings!) about the same
price i can buy a new SLK230 merc!
I'd like a euro as there are fewer of themand they
have an interesting history, unless i'm mistaken that most of those
manufactured being used in desgin rule compliance tests?
However economics will force me to godown the
path of purchasing one already in aus, not sure there are any euros here, i
think they are all conversions - but I'm sure I'll be corrected if I'm wrong
:)
Anyway, I can keep dreaming :)
Thanks for the offer, I'll send you my
details.
Cheers
Greg
