The old glass probably WILL break...

I couldn't find the posting either, but I DO
remember it was Walter Coe who wrote it...
We has an elaborate discussion on this when he was in the
process of making convex mirrors out of truck-mirrors...
I actually have had a couple of his rejects lying around
for over two years now, still not mounted as I'm still not
 happy on how to mount them AND I want to make them heated,
so I still have to figure out the wiring too...

As far as I remember you have to tilt the mirror completely
"up" and "out", so the inner, bottom corner comes out of the
housing. Then you twist the housing forward, so the glass
faces outward, heat the mirror (and glue underneath) with
a hairdryer and meanwhile carefully pry between the plastic
"spider" and the glass.. This _should_ work...

If you're in the process of making a couple of convex mirrors,
it would be wise to also make some spacers so the glass lies
allmost flush with the housing. Else you'll notice the outer
edge of the mirror only reflects the inside of the housing,
due to the mirror-housings being "twisted in" so much, opposed
to most modern cars having their mirrors at allmost 90 degrees...
