I'm not so sure it would - the sump itself would likely be too low.

I've spoken with Bob Brandy in the US - he uses a 4.6 litre Rover V8 
with success. The beauty of the small block chevy is it's long history 
(like the Rover lump) and it's multiple uses. Many aftermarket mods 
and easily tuned/repaired.
