I was talking to Ron Grady about this and he said this topic came over the weekend at the tech seminar at the SEDOC event in Atlanta. He talked about the lifespan of the regassesd struts as about one year ONLY.
I talked to Steven at DMC Hoston and he said the same thing, that the problem is the shafts on the struts get pitted over time, microscopically pitted, but pitted nonetheless, and thats why the gas leaks out. I can see thats why re-gassing would only last a year, where new struts with new shafts would last longer.
Seems like re-gassing is a losing proposition to me, especially considering its $70 per pair, plus I have to pay to send the olds ones to England...what do I do until they come back, build up my arm muscles opening the doors without a strut on it? And if he only does them in batches of 30, it may be awhile before I get them back, too!

Does anyone here know how to go about finding a book that's only availible in the UK? Recently I went to the university looking for a copy of "Start Up" (see the archives), while I was at the library, I logged onto the international card catalogue, and there I a more recent book available (1990), but only in the UK titled "The DeLorean-Chapman Conspiracy" by Robin Wright. If any could offer me some tips on locating a copy, I would greatly apperciate it! Thanks in advance!

ok, a couple quick questions for you all
1. The wheel bearing thing, I listened more closely and I think the buzzing noise is coming from the rear left, right behind the driver. any answers? I just changed the sparkplugs and gas line recently. Could I have messed something up around there?
2. when I reach 65MPH or so my windshield starts to vibrate near the top by the driver. anybody have the same thing? anybody know what to do about it? I don't know if it IS the windshield, but its coming from that area.

While looking through some DMC memorabilia I have accumulated over the past 15 years, I came across a newspaper article from the late 80's that indicated a man was preparing to be "entombed behind the wheel of his stainless steel Delorean sports car." The title of the article is "Man plans to be buried in his own fast lane". The 67 year old man of Port Orange, Florida, Philip Miuccio, "a retired commercial pilot and stock-car racer" is (or was) "building a $30,000 marble mausoleum with amber bulletproof windows on a hill overlooking a runway at Daytona Beach Regional Airport". "Who says you can't take it with you when you die?" the man said. It goes on to identify David Collins, General Manager of the 20 acre Cedar Hill Memory Gardens as saying "This is the strangest request we've ever had". I'll bet. Any of you Florida DMC owners (or anyone else) know anything about this or if it ever happened? I apologize in advance if anyone knows or knew this person and is offended by my posting these details.

Well after 9 months on the shelf and 4 months in the shop. I got out on the road this weekend. What a great ride. My wife thought I had a girl friend because of the ever present grin on my face all weekend. I also got to put the car in my new 3 car garage!! FYI I have had the good fortune to drive 3 very nice cars since Labor Day 1970 Corvette Stingray, (20K still showroom fresh inside & out) - Red 1997 Corvette T5, (7K Brand New) Also Red 1981 DMC-12, 29K very original automatic
The 70 Vette is a beauty with great power. The 97 Vette is a monster, I had it up to 110 mph in 3rd gear (6 speed). The Delorean is mine and although its an auto, the most fun to drive. I put 300 miles on it in 2 days last weekend.
For those of you who don't like the automatic its understandable, however, even here at 5,000 feet in Denver it has plenty of power for me. I just don't drag race anybody, and as you know it loves curves in the road. I would probably just hurt myself, and the car, if I had Rad Dad's twin turbo manual set-up. btw - Rad Dad if you would like to get together some time send me a note and so can work out details.

I have recently started investigating purchasing a Delorean. It really seems like there are a lot of maintenance issues with the car....if i were to purchase a bone stock car, how much money would i have to spend to replace all the things that should be replaced, meaning all the comments i see about "You should replace that hose with a steel braided one.." etc...
is this impression of there being a lot of maintenance issues well founded?
i don't know if i'm interesting in purchasing a car that will have something wrong with it most of the time....but if i've got the wrong impression, please let me know.

I recently successfully cured a rattle that had been driving me bonkers. It seemed to be coming from *everywhere*, I couldn't localize it. Finally, my 12 year old son said that he thought it was the roof. Bingo! The place where the lip on the front of the T-shaped piece of stainless hooks under the body piece above the windshield was loose enough to allow the stainless to rattle in the wind. (This is just a lock-fit--there are no fasteners between the roof and the car at this point.) I removed the stainless T-panel, glued a thin piece of soft foam rubber to the bottom front of it (the whole width of the front, just behind the lip), put it all back together, and we're now quiet as a Lexus (well, almost).
As a side note, if you decide to remove your roof panel, note that there is a screw on each side (accessible from the top of the door sill, near the torsion bars) that is not mentioned in the removal procedure in the service manual. You won't be able to remove the panel until you loosen them.

Responding to your question that Deloreans need a lot of maintenance:
Your question struck a cord with me while reading it and also a comment bro= ught to mind from a friend the other day, questioning the valve or non-valu= e of the dmc bulletin board. His comment was,"The bulletin board seems to= discourage and paint a very bad picture of the Delorean automobile, in tha= t, it makes it appear that is not worth the trouble to own one with all the= problems and up-keep that seems to be required. The Delorean is an excellent automobile that requires no more maintenance t= hat any other automobile provided that you give it the care and attention a= s you would the car you drive on a regular basis. =
The Delorean is a study in design, granted it has it's quirks, the same as = any other piece of machinery and therefore, requires it's tweaks now and th= en. To be afraid of the maintenance requirements is to be afraid to own an= y type of automobile. Do not be afraid. As my friend and I concluded, we questions the remarks made on the bulletin= board, from a non owner's point of view that we may be painting a very dim= picture of ownership and that many want-to-be owners my steer clear of own= ership. Hopefully not. It is something to be considered with our comments= and maybe we ( the poster's on the bulletin board) should tag a comment of= the joys and pride we have in being owners. The car shown on the pictures called Z9 is a vision from BMW designers of a next generation 4 seat sports coupe. You could open the doors in two ways. Like standard doors if you want only access to the front seats and like gullwings doors if you want access to the backseats to. The car is actually displayed at the International Car Show (IAA) in Frankfurt and it seems it never went into produktion.
But it seems this kind of doors will have a renaissance. Mercedes-Benz is premiering its new futuristic high-performance sports car called SLR. The cars uses a kind of jackknife doors like the lamborghini. http://www.mercedes-benz.com/e/about/fairs/iaa99/iaa_99_f080_www01.htm
It seems BMW and Mercedes now know what DeLorean knew twenty years ago. These doors are extremly "sexy" and are always good for turning heads
