Hi-

I have been trouble shooting my newly purchased '81 DeLorean for the past
few days, and happily, I have very few troubles to shoot.

The most noticeable problem I have encountered thus far is the door lock on
the passenger side.

I noticed a 'stiffness' to the locking mechanisms when I purchased the car,
but this did not seem too extraordinary for an 18 year old vehicle. I
applied WD 40 to the 4 locking mechanisms I could get to (front and back
latches of each door), which helped with the overall stiffness, but the
front latch on the passenger side works only sporadically. I can never tel=

Does this sound like a mechanical problem, or an electrical one? I believe
the alignment of the doors is very good, if not perfect, but what's the bes=

Is a broken door lock something that is fairly easily fixed or replaced?

If anyone has had a similar problem and has solved it, please drop me a

As you may recall, it appeared that the clutch was not disengaging the flywheel from the transmission. A friend at work suggested that I try placing the transmission in reverse while the engine was off. Then, I depressed the clutch peddle to disengage the clutch while cranking the engine. When I first tried to crank the engine the car lept backwards. I tried again and the clutch disengaged and the engine started. I ran out of time tonight to try and drive the car, but it seems to be OK. Now, I would like your input as to why the clutch would stick to the flywheel and not release. As I said in my original post, there was plenty of fluid in the clutch hydraulic system and no problems when I last drove the car several months ago. Any ideas?? They are "How many people have a car alarm?" and "How many people store their DeLoreans outdoors?" These threads are getting a lot of responses which contain very little information. They *almost* qualify as "me too" posts. Allow me to point out that eGroups has a perfectly good survey function which is available to all of us. It could easily tally up these statistics without jamming all of our E-mail boxes. In the interest of keeping the DML a pleasant community, I STRONGLY SUGGEST that these questions be conducted as surveys in the future. If you want to accumulate detailed statistics, like the brand name of their alarm or stereo, please ask subscribers to send private Email to you. When you tally the results feel free to post them to the rest of us. The original system is an excellent design and the hardware never seems to wear out. Door latch problems usually don't start by themselves. Inexperienced hands are usually the culprit. My '81 d had the gas gauge pointing straight up thing going, so I ripped the sending unit out and tore it open. There is a snap on screen holder at the bottom of the unit (easy enough) that when you pop it off will reveal a 5.5 mm nut in the center and a peg off to the side. Both are coming through the bottom of a plastic piece that would pry off easily if 1) you get the nut off and 2) if the peg weren't so rusty and in need of cleaning. The nut is screwed to the center post that runs all the way through the top where it meets an electical connector (black wire). When unsrcrewing the nut, the post will want to turn with it, thus breaking the coiled ground wire (if it isn't already) that is attached from the float to the top of the post inside the unit. At the bottom of the post there is a fixed holder for the gas warning light wire (red wire) that will also break (the wire, not the holder) if the post goes spinning upon nut removal. The off center peg has a wire coiled around it that the contact on the float "reads." The peg is pretty ridged so it will not break if you take care with the amount of pressure you put on it. Hind-sight tells me that I would have saved myself a lot of sodering if I had made damn sure that the center post would not have spun upon nut removal. Perhaps cutting a slit with a Dremmel tool into the top of the center post (where the black wire is attached to the unit) so it could be secured with a screw driver while the nut is removed. Now I'm at the point where I must replace the coiled ground wire and the straight thin wire. I think they are of a specific resistance, but I have a feeling that I won't get that info here. I'll probably reuse some wire out of an old junk Audi sending unit. I'll keep you posted on the progress. (AP) -- Former automaker John Z. DeLorean was able to prevent the U.S. marshal's auction of his sprawling Bedminster estate by filing for bankruptcy protection. DeLorean, known for the stainless steel, gull-wing sports cars that bore his name, issued a statement that his Chapter 11 reorganization filing would allow him to develop his 434-acre Lamington Farm into two 18-hole golf courses and an equestrian center. He could not be reached for comment Tuesday. One of his chief creditors, his onetime lawyer Mayer Morganroth, told The Star-Ledger of Newark on Tuesday that the filing was an ``inappropriate'' ploy to buy time and would be challenged. A message left for Morganroth at his Michigan office was not immediately returned. He is trying to enforce a $7.5 million judgment against DeLorean for unpaid legal fees. I have written on the subject of oil additives quite frequently. You might want to look in the archives. Anyway, the short answer is that an oil additive is just not going to do your engine any good. If you want to do your engine a good thing, use synthetic oil, or use regular oil and change it regularly. The basic reason for this is that the oil companies invest more money into R&D on their oil than the additive makers' whole company is worth. If there is some miracle ingredient that makes oil better, the oil makers would be using it already. Yet none of the reputable oil makers manufactures any additives - they don't even have any third party additives that they recommend. To compound things, oil is a very complex set of chemicals. Every oil is a little different, even though most of them are fairly similar, none are identical. The additive makers don't even know what sort of chemistry their product will be going in. Fuel treatments are typically in the same boat, except for fuel treatments that perform a specific task (stabilizer, injector cleaner, whatever - these are frequently, but not always, good at what they do). ------------------------------ message 3356 ------------------------------ http://www.eGroups.com/list/dmcnews/?start=3356 X-Mailing-List: dmcnews@egroups.com X-URL: http://www.egroups.com/list/dmcnews/ From: "Gerald Deutsch" Date: Wed, 22 Sep 1999 15:22:07 -0400 MIME-Version: 1.0 Subject: [DML] Car show @ Englishtown, NJ... All of the additives that are supposed to make a car last longer, or the oil more slippery are snake oil. There are some additives that will keep an engine that is on it's last legs on the road a bit longer. These are OK in the sense that they do what they advertise, but DON'T use them in an engine that is in good condition. Amen, Joe. This is very true. A while back I was replacing the idler pulley bearing and upon reinstallation over tightened one of the bolts, stripping the threads (not a good thing). After calming down, I decided to re-tap the threads to a larger size and after carefully accomplishing this a larger bolt worked fine. I am now VERY careful with this and all other fasteners into the aluminum block. I later fabricated and installed a stainless steel plate as an extention to the muffler heat shield. It extends to the left (viewed from the rear of the car) past the lower pulley and protects it somewhat from excess muffler heat. This has greatly increased the life of that bearing. BTW, with over 116 thousand miles on VIN# 3507, I have replaced idler pulley bearings several times. The lower pulley bearing seems to fail more than the upper one which is why I added the extention to the heat shield. Once while returning from an overnight outing with several other DMC owners, the lower bearing froze up and the pulley broke loose, fell down onto the freeway, bounced up, and hit VIN# 2248's front facia damaging a parking/turn signal light. I didn't even notice or hear anything and # 2248 asked on the C.B. if I had hit or run over anything because when it hit him it made a terrible noise. DeLorean Files for Bankruptcy

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) -- Former automaker John Z. DeLorean was able to prevent
the U.S. marshal's auction of
his sprawling Bedminster estate by filing for bankruptcy protection.

DeLorean, known for the stainless steel, gull-wing sports cars that bore
his name, issued a statement that his
Chapter 11 reorganization filing would allow him to develop his 434-acre
Lamington Farm into two 18-hole golf
courses and an equestrian center.

He could not be reached for comment Tuesday.

One of his chief creditors, his onetime lawyer Mayer Morganroth, told The
Star-Ledger of Newark on Tuesday that the filing was an ``inappropriate''
ploy to
buy time and would be challenged.

A message left for Morganroth at his Michigan office was not immediately
returned. He is trying to enforce a $7.5 million judgment against DeLorean
for
unpaid legal fees.

DeLorean, 74, also owes about $11 million to Merrill Lynch Credit Corp.

You may remember it from the infomercial where they cut fluid lines, and dump rocks and sand in a Chrysler motor and it keeps going. (btw, Prolong declined when duralube wanted to take the "Prolong Challenge". To sum up the satisfaction, the engine is noticeably quieter, everything runs smoother, especially on the highway, and gas mileage increases about 3-5mpg. I have been using it for 2 years, and my car has even stopped burning oil! Not to mention that usually, you can hear some rough running as soon as you start your car until the oil circulates..well, this does not happen for me when I use Duralube. Let's not kid ourselves, the bottom line with the oil companies is the almighty dollar. They are just as concerned with what distillation by-products they can dump off in their products as what they are trying to keep out of it, the gas you buy at the pump is a prime example of this. Although companies that produce additives don't have the budgets of the large oil companies they have still done some respectable research. Sure, there are some garbage products out there but I wouldn't condemn the whole industry especially in light of the "wonderful" oil companies. -SweatyEddy ----- Original Message ----- From: William T Wilson To: Sent: Wednesday, September 22, 1999 7:16 PM Subject: [DML] Re: engine additives > On Tue, 21 Sep 1999 rickaye@webtv.net wrote: > > > has anone tried to use a engine treatement to the engine in there DMC. > > I have written on the subject of oil additives quite frequently. I've been unsuccessful in trying to find exact replacements of the originals. I've been able to locate another brand of tires for the front that are H rated. However, it's been a challenge to locate replacement tires for the rear that has the same speed rating. Is having a different speed rating (front and rear) a problem? Should I go with a different size tires to have match up the speed rating on the tires? What would you guys recommend as replacements tires? I would prefer to get the originals if that was possible. I understand if you disallow it. I felt I needed the length to illustrate the story I was trying to tell. -Bob) I am offering up the following as an 'experience' I have recently had with my DeLorean while having an alarm installed. Feel free to analyze the situation. Maybe you can get some enlightening info out of it about door lights and alarms, and maybe you can help me get my driver's side door lights to come on! I recently got my DMC-12 and realized that the door lights on either door did not come on. I put this on the low-priority list of things to do because it doesn't have anything to do with actually operating the vehicle. (Can you get a 'fix-it' ticket from the police for not having properly working door lights? Hmmmm.....) Anyway, I figured the bulbs were burnt out. Today, I had a CODE alarm installed, and I noticed that after installation was completed by the shop, all 3 door lights on the passenger side worked. I also noticed that the alarm did not work on the driver's side door... I also noticed that now, not only did the passenger door lights work, but they NEVER shut off. (I could tell because they were VERY hot by the time I noticed them, and they didn't shut off at the last second before I closed the door ...something like a refrigerator light) Both of these problems were fixed. It appears that the little 'push peg' (for lack of a better term) on the dash/console near the hinge of the drivers door never touched the activating plate located on the door that it is supposed to touch. Sorry for the lack of technical terms, but basically, the door part of car alarms are hooked up to a little peg mechanism on the console near the door hinge that depresses when the door is closed and releases when the door is opened. The initial intent of these pegs is to turn on and off interior lights in the car when the door opens/closes. Apparently, my peg never touched the door, because it was missing it's mark by a good half inch or so. This peg misalignment caused the passenger door lights to stay on permanently and the alarm to not go off when the driver's door opened. I suppose this could have been caused by the door shifting, but it seems to be aligned very well. This problem was fixed by adding a small piece of hard rubber to the part of the door where the activation peg was hitting (or missing, as the case may be). This rubber piece was cut from some excess rubber found at the alarm store was affixed to the door securely with extra strength double sided foam tape so that it would depress the pin but not touch the gasket along the front of the door opening. Now, the driver's door/alarm works, and the passenger door lights go out, because the pin is properly depressed. However, the driver's door lights still do not work. I have no idea what was done electrically during the installation to make the passenger door lights come on, but if anyone knows a way to get these lights to come on, please let me know. Something I did notice during all of this is that there are supposed to be 2 of those 'push pegs' at the driver's door hinge, an upper and a lower. I am missing the lower one. What function does this lower peg serve?
