I am in New York and have not seen any D clubs or organizations around here. Luckly I was able to take the car into the curb in time. So now I'm looking for a front rim to replace mine - it's scraped up pretty bad. Also - I think I only need an alignment, the toe-in (sp?) is all that appears to be messed up. But has anyone had this happen (hit a curb hard at an angle) and did more damage than you could see? This is a big time suspension problem. Bushings? Shocks? Control arms? Chris, When I first started driving my DeLorean again in 1994, it was very unstable. I had the original NCT's which had flat spots and the original shocks. I replaced the shocks and the car became much more stable. I also replaced the trailing arm bolts, the originals were bent. A couple of years later, I replaced the tires with new Yokohama's. The car now handles like it is on rails. The clutch does not seem to be disengaging the engine from the transmission. The gears grind horribly. There is plenty of fluid in the reservoir, I installed the stainless braided line in 1984. The car has 24K miles on it. I admit that it has sat for a couple of months, though I had no problems when I last drove it. Any suggestions on how to free up the clutch/pressure plate? While neither the Delorean nor the Bricklin are "mechanical marvels" as some uninformed may profess, they are FUN cars, Fun to drive and Fun to look at. No one in their right mind should buy a 20+ year old piece of machinery for any other reason. (And despite what some of you non owner lurker teenagers think, it won't get you a girl) My 67 Mustang convertible was one of the best selling cars cars ever made, yet inspite of the $15,000 I've invested in the car since 1980, it too is not a "mechanical marvel", nor is my 1970 Ford F100 Custom shortbed with factory 302 hotrod truck, nor my 95 Corvette. They are all old machines (except for the Vette) that give me pleasure, but in keeping it all in perspective I do not "thank my savior" for creating them anymore than I thank JZD. Also, my wife and I normally set up our camcorder as an "in-car" camera and we plan to tape our runs. I can put together some AVIs with that, although with my work schedule it will probably take a few days after the event before the AVIs would get posted. While an autocross is run at the limits of the car, it is NOT run at the high speed limits and video taken from the outside usually looks pretty boring unless somebody manages to do a spinout or something. That's why autocrosses aren't really a spectator event. People get bored just watching. It's once you are inside the car that you get the adreniline rush! Is this really a Right Hand Drive car or did they just reverse the negative? Looking closely at the windshield wipers, I'm noticing that the arm on the driver's side originates at the side of the car rather than at the center. If the car had been designed from the ground up as a RH drive I would say this would be correct, but since the D was designed as a LH drive car, and most of the production was LH cars, then I seriously doubt that they would have gone to the trouble of reversing the wiper mounts when building the few RH cars. If you do, then, most likely the problem is more serious. If you have no movement, then it would have to be in the hydraulic system. That would be far less costly. This will "ruin" a car for months, especially on a warm California day. Some degradation products will spawn microorganisms that will carry on the smell for even further lengths of time (rotting flesh is good for this). It turns out that my drivers side door does not latch down at all! I discovered this while driving it this weekend and hitting a large bump, and then hearing both latches rattle. Since I have had the car, I would notice the door coming open just a little while driving at higher speeds such that I could look out the back corner and see the road. I have been thinking that the front latch was latching down properly. But tonight after putting the D up for the night, I reached to open the door and missed the door handle, but I still opened the door! To clarify, I can open the door not even using the handle, just by pulling up on the body moldings! Quite frankly this frightens me. All this time, the door could have come open at highway speeds and then I would not have a door. So I guess my question is, what can I do to adjust the latches? I think it has to do with the tension on the door handle. Whoever installed the metal door handle updates didn't do too well putting it all back together. It's way too loose!!! I would use the door locks, but the drivers door likes to stay in the locked position. Yes the solonoid is more or less burnt in the lock position. And yes I have disconnected the central locking mechanism, but the damage has been done already by the previous owner(s). It's an '81 w/a 5 speed. That's exactly what I wanted, if not exactly the condition I wanted it in. The owner moved the car last month from the garage where he disassembled it to a shed across the street. He used a forklift (ouch!) to move the body shell to its new location. After a brief bit of haggling, I nailed the price down to a very reasonable and affordable amount. Thanks again to Greg Guillot, who provided me with bargaining materials to help bring the price down. The owner wouldn't take a deposit, saying it wasn't necessary as we had shaken hands on the deal, and that should be good enough. I kind of like that, but don't necessarily trust it. A lot can happen between a shake of the hand and a turn of the key, you know? However, at the end of October I will bring several bushel baskets and a rake and bring home my new toy. =) For all of you Pittsburgh D owners, I would appreciate if you could drop me a line if you would be willing to help with a "bag it and tag it" parts identification party in early November. The x9 was not an exact match(he thought it would work) but found an X55 blank (mfg. unknown but said the ilco x55 blank should be the same) that worked great. The good news is that you don't have to drill holes in the bumper/fascia. All of the DeLorean Service Centers sell a license plate holder that works very nicely and requires no hole drilling.
