The Cadillac Northstar is essentially identical dimensionally to the 350 except for bore and stroke. I'm told the Northstar fits nicely in the D and factory fresh is capable of producing in excess of 300 HP. Quite a bit more power than any stock '74 Vette, including the the big block 454. It is also capable of delivering in excess of 20 MPG. Over the years there have been literally dozens of incarnations of the 350. Anywhere from an anemic 120 HP version in the mid to late 70's to over 500 HP. As an aside, I have a stock 1984 Vette 350 that averages 25-26 MPG on the highway. Considerably better than my D gets. I also have a non-stock '74 Vette with a 350-350 engine (from 1970) that get about 15 MPG. So it isn't necessarily an accurate statement to say you wouldn't go far on a tank of gas with a 350 in your D! From the factory the rear striker would not fully engage the door lock. My guess is that it was not set in the fiberglass correctly. I did drill the striker plate 1/4" larger to move the bolt. It solved the problem. I investigate realigning the sheet metal but their did not appear to be sufficient adjustment in those holes to make everything fit. (I have an open-wheel formula car I use for the autocrosses). I will tell you this much, if you don't get your own class, expect to be beat horrendously by the 'vettes. For some reason, the SCCA classes the DeLorean in a street-prepared class only. So not only will you be racing against 'vettes, you'll be racing against modified 'vettes. I will say one thing...if you intend to run your car, make sure your oil is topped up. My DeLorean used to have an oil leak and I remember a few times when taking turns at far less than autocross speed, the oil pressure would drop. NOT a good thing to have happen! I guess it's kinda gratifying to see the DeLorean classed with all the Corvettes, Panteras and Ferraris though. The DeLorean is in B Street Prepared (BSP). I've searched various SCCA results pages and I've never been able to find a DeLorean listed. Well, I can speak from experience as my DeLorean has been converted to R-134. The system works very well. I have to even turn the system down as it becomes too cold at times. Both R-12 and R-134 are viable products. If the system is working properly, why bother change. However, if the owner wishes to change the system to R-134, after the initial cost (about $150 for me), you shouldn't have any other concerns. Many of the comparisons of how well the 134 works have been made based on experiences on other car types. The DeLorean cockpit is very small and therefore has a smaller volume to cool than most other car types. Maybe in vehicles that have a large volume to cool, the efficiency of the 134 would be an important issue, but in the DeLorean (at least mine), the temp. is as cool as you want it to be. You know what everybody says about opinions... The Hot start problem is very common with Deloreans. The fix for that is to replace the fuel accumlator. It's not that hard a job,and the parts can be ordered from any of the Delorean parts guys. I ordered mine from Jerry Rine in Newark,Ohio ( 1-740-366-5587) and had it in two days. This valve can be accessed thru a small opening under the car which is between the seats. Take your time and keep a can handy to catch a small amount of gas when you pull the rubber line off. Use caution and make sure all the lines are tight and leak free when your done. The car is under powered, has typically poor British electronics and wiring (except the Bosch FI), only adequate suspension, and some very poor design (i.e. door locks, window regulators, rear trailing arms)... and being "privileged" by owning one ?? get real again. The only thing regarding the car that makes you "privileged" is that you could afford the $15-$18k you have paid for a really nice one. In other words, you didn't have to wait in line to buy it. On the other hand, you could have done worse. You could have bought a Bricklin. Bricklins, while they have more power, have REALLY poor design and suspension although their wiring is better and is mostly absent of Delorean era electronics. The acrylic body (no Erik, it is not fiberglass) does resist dents and gouges quite well, but is very susceptible to stress cracks and cannot be repaired or painted easily (nor can a Delorean). And as far as JZD being a genius, well while he was at the top of his class, he did nothing more spectacular than Malcom Bricklin. And as far a "mechanical marvels" go, I am still amazed as to how well my 21 year old Sony TV works. The bottom line Erik, is that you should enjoy your car - you've obviously worked hard for it. I've been autocrossing for a number of years, but just got the DeLorean this year. We've run it once. It did better than I would have thought, but still got it's rear kicked pretty good. Of course, we were running it in TOTALLY stock conditions on the Yokohama street tires. Plus I started the tire pressures off a little on the high side so it was really squirley. My wife drives also, and she spun it completely around when she got the car over-ocillating in a slalom! My wife and I have decided that we aren't going to run it often, but it IS fun to take it out occasionally. We're hoping to get enough DeLoreans out on the 10th that they'll give us our own class so that nobody has to worry about the other cars. I stand by my recomendation to use a good locksmith instead of Wal-Mart. YMMV of course, but I had a lousy experience TWICE with them, and they had the new cutting system. This was just earlier this year and I had noticed the new machine and asked about it. They extolled the virtues of it and told me how well it worked. Well I went back the following Saturday. I got 8 keys cut. Two each for a house door, a garage door, and two cars. Out of the 8 keys, only 4 worked the first time. I have no idea how he managed to mess up two of these. When comparing the keys it looks as though he did not seat the blank deeply enough into the machine. On the other two keys, he had chosen the wrong blanks. They were very similar, but the groove pattern was different enough that they wouldn't even insert into the lock. No matter how accurate the cutting machine is, it still has to have someone who can use it properly!! This particular operator was High School aged, and was busy talking to one of the other employees. Second time I had two more house keys cut for a different house, at a different Wal-Mart a few weeks later. Wrong blanks again. Once again a younger, probably inexperienced person doing it. I've had numerous keys cut over the years at locksmiths. So far I've never had one that didn't work. I know they make mistakes too, but so far they've done better. They are usually MUCH more experienced with keys and locks and can do a far better job of matching up keys. Autocrossing WILL put more stress on the car than normal driving, but not all that much more. If you would decide to do this regularly and switch to a super soft racing tire that's wider than the stock tires, then I would start to worry. Race rubber can stress components beyond the original design parameters. Even then I wouldn't worry too much about it. Go out and give it a try! It's extremely doubtful you would hurt the car if it's been maintained well and you run on the street tires for just one or two events. If you find you like doing it, THEN you can decide if you want to run the D, or use another car. I personally run a Ford Probe GT in G-Stock, and I'm trading that in for a Miata this winter and will be running B-Stock next year. This isn't due to the reliability of the DeLorean. I think I could work with that. It's just due to the fact that the DeLorean is mis-classed (IMHO) and would never be competive running against the Corvettes, RX-7 Twin Turbos, and the Lotuses. Autocrossing is not hard on the car assuming that it is mechanically sound to begin with. Check your brakes, suspension, and your battery. If your battery isn't *tight* in the battery compartment you won't pass tech. People autocross everything from purpose built open wheel racers to (and I kid you not) a 1970 Ford Fairmont (I saw that at the last autocross I went to). This is the sort of thing that Lotus' racing suspension was made for. And if you ever got the feeling driving your D that it seemed to have no limits to its handling - well, you'll get to find them. It's fun. Autocrossers are some of the friendliest and most helpful people you'll meet. They will show you the rules, how to inflate your tires properly, and will probably give you a ride so you can see what's up. You get to see all sorts of interesting vehicles - that's almost worth the trip in itself. Although the DeLorean is not very competitive (it is classed in Super Stock and really belongs in C Stock with the other small displacement sports cars) you can probably find an autocross in your area almost every weekend. Just show up. :} ------------------------------ message 3221 ------------------------------ http://www.eGroups.com/list/dmcnews/?start=3221 X-Mailing-List: dmcnews@egroups.com X-URL: http://www.egroups.com/list/dmcnews/ From: "DMC Joe" Date: Sat, 18 Sep 1999 14:33:11 -0400 MIME-Version: 1.0 Subject: [DML] DANGER; DO NOT DRIVE THE CAR !
