I found the same thing when my wife and I went to Florida in 1997. The car
was in the backlot area and we wereallowed full access to photograph it.
Our website has some of the pictures we took. You can see it at:

While looking down into the relay compartment the 3rd speed relay is 3rd
from the right lower row and the 4th speed relay is to it's left in the 4th
position.
Let me know the result of your fuel pump lamp test.

Dear DML,
I must also agree with Robert Starling concerning his comments, and I
fully support him. For the record, I am one of the two owners he helps on a
regular basis. Without him, I would probably be fed up enough with my D by
now to sell it. However I fully trust him and his ability to work on the
car. I have learned a lot about the car from him and how to care for it. So
a big THANK YOU goes out to Rob from me, and my D car thanks him too!

A great site posted these pictures of an early brochure for the bus,
but unfortunately that page is gone now (I am fairly sure). There was
some discussion about this quite a while ago, and to the best of my
knowledge these pictures are actually composites of an existing
European bus with the DMC-80 logo. This is one of DeLorean's "side"
projects that never got very far, along with the DMC-24 and DMC-44, as
it was funded by the NIDA money meant for the DMC-12, and DeLorean was
kindly asked more than once to drop the project in order to streamline
expenses.
The brochure struck me as interesting, so I saved these images on a
zip disk when I first saw them. I have posted them in the vault, in the
"DMC-80" folder.

With all the different versions of the Chevy 350, a person thinking of
an engine swap, could be thinking of something as expensive, fast, and
complex as a corvette LT1 motor. Or they could be thinking of something
as cheep, simple and reliable as a 350 from a 1975 Caprice.
The thought of a nice simple engine mounted fuel pump, rochester
quadrajet carb, and a simple ignition system sound like a real nice
idea. Just think, you would never have to worry about tank mounted fuel
pumps, $800 fuel distributors and failing accumulators ever again.
Just an idea

Hi Everyone,
While using some of the excellent advice in the archives regarding replacing
the fuel accumulator, I have run into a frustrating problem - I can't get the
metal line to release from the accumulator. I can turn the accumulator freely,
but I can't seem to apply enough force to pull the line out. (Yes, I have
loosened and pushed the fitting out of the way.) Is the metal line flanged at
the end? I don't want to gouge the brass ferrule and have to replace it which
would mean having the end of the line reflanged.
Anybody else run into this problem?
Thanks,
Greg Guillot

OK, I got the tank clean, replaced all rubber and the pump. I see some mess
in the metal lines, is there a way to blow them out? could I take off the
filter or would the accumulator be distroyed? Before I cleaned the tank the
car started to smoke (very black), someone said could be a stuck fuel
distrubitor and that I could unstick it myself how's that?

Subject: [DML] Owners check list, not for the car, but you!
Mime-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Over time, alot has been posted about what to look for when purchasing
a DeLorean, mechanical problems, isurance costs, operation costs, rust,
etc, etc... But there is one thing that is commonly overlooked, not
operation, but ownership. Yes the issue of maintenance has been talked
about before, "If you can't afford to or don't want to do it, then
don't buy a D". And yes the DeLorean has it's quriks, and it's problems
as well. You can look at these as either nussancies, or even little
"calls for attention", it's up to you. Yes there are the little things
like the special oil drain plug tool, or even trying to fill the washer
fliud resivoir, etc. But these are all things that have to do with the
car itself. Other things such as the "Fuel Injection System Safety"
issue, I would have to agree are probably problemed in most all cases
by operator error. I can't truly think of any way to put this gently,
so I'll be frank about. Weather your a do-it-yourself guy or gal, or
even a garage mechanic, you should always be open to both critcisim and
advice, but not even that means that the feed back that you will always
be correct, informative or even complete for that matter. In that case,
a little independent studying and reading of books and manuals never
hurts at all to get the facts straight!
Most importantly: Will you drive the car, or will the car drive you? In
other words if the car has to adapt to your standards and expectations
(i.e. operation, performance, ease of maintenance, appearance, and
overall appeal), than a DeLorean is not a car for you. Yes most owners
would agree that a little more power wouldn't hurt, but a major
modification such as an engine/transmission swap IS IN NO WAY A
SOLUTION. If you'd like to go 150-200 mph+, then that's your bussiness,
please, go right ahead, thats ok! But for this purpose alone, spend the
money a on a new European import that was designed originaly for that
purpose rather than on some fancy engine swap for a D. If you want a
blue or purple DeLorean, then please buy a painted car and have it
repainted in turn, don't paint an unpainted car. Feel that a D is too
much of a problem to service yourself, take it to a mechanic, if none
are available, or your don't want to, then I have no idea as to what to
tell you except either be patient, or sell it to someone else. Unsure
about the car in any way, don't buy one! Finaly, DO NOT buy a DeLorean
as an investment because you won't make a profit, or at least one that
would make it worthwhile! A DeLorean's value is not measured monetarily
(sp), but rather emotionaly. No amount of money can buy the feeling
that you get starting your car in the garage, opening the doors in
public, crusing down the street and having everyone look at you all at
once, or even putting apart of yourself some where in the car (signing
the "cave paintings" or finally getting that clock to work!). I hope
that all of this helps you the reader to understand a little more, and
maybe even stirs some emotions in you!

Mime-Version: 1.0

Hi everyone, I'm writing this letter just to clear a few "rumour
problems" that I've heard about.
1. I was told that on some of the early '81 models (mainly w/black
intieriors) the bolt holes for the struts were drilled too far up on
the doors, this inturn caused the struts to place pressure on the
center of the doors roofs and thus forced them to "bow out".
2. The PRV-6 is prone to warped head gaskets with age, thus most D's
are now having this problem, and if not, are likely to incur it some
time soon.
Normaly I am skeptical about comments like these, but both came
directly from TWO MAJOR PARTS SUPPLIERS & SERVICE CENTRES.
3. The spare tire only holds air for about 2 weeks, then goes flat, why
exactly is this? Is it a problem with the original tire in place, or is
it with the rim itself? (disscussed before on the list, a matching car
tire is a '71 or '72 Vega, perfect as a spare or for winter storage) In
Las Vegas there is ALOT of construction going on (nails on the road),
and EVERY car we've owned has gotten at least 1 flat at some time!
4. Finally, Is JZD going to be a Grandfather soon? I was contacted by
someone claiming to be Kathryn, who says that she is raising money for
her father's new company, and her soon-to-be-born child. I know that
there are some "lurkers" out there on the list that monitor what goes
on for JZD. Maybe someone could shed a little light on the subject?
(either publicly or privately)
Thanks for everything, and keep in mind... 1,2,& 4 are only rumours,
not proven truths yet. Thanks again!
-Robert

Whenever my car sits without being driven for approximately two weeks and I
go out to start it, it turns over to the point where it just gets enough
juice to start or it fails to start until I let it sit for a minute or so.
Once I drive it around, it get charged up enough to start with no problem.
Absent replacing the battery (which I may do anyway) and the other obvious
choice (drive it more often!), is there something that can be continuously
draining my battery? I seem to recall something on the list about
disconnecting something because of a drain on the battery but can't remember
what. Thanks

The problem is in the switching circuits. Start by inspecting the wiring
leading to the motor and make sure that everything is connected, no loose
wires. From your description it sounds as if someone has modified your fan
speed wiring.

Actually you are right on some parts, the wiring is typical 80's British, but
from a mechanical standpoint it is relatively simple compared to the year
2000 cars,if you have any decent mechanical abilities,any DIY's with a DECENT
set of metric tools could work on the mechanical parts on the Delorean.

Subject: [DML] Engine Fires
Mime-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
For some reason people always seem to think that if one person is right,
then others with a different point of view must be wrong. How narrow!
The question has come up that if the fuel system of the DeLorean is a
"problem" that contributes to engine fires, why haven't other cars with
this same system had similar results.
I contend that it has to do with the demise of the DeLorean Motor Company.
Let me explain. People who bought Mercedes with the same system have, for
the most part, gone back to Mercedes dealers and mechanics for service.
Those folks know how to repair the systems properly. When DeLorean went
belly-up, many dealers didn't even want to mess with the cars they sold.
At that point there wasn't any good technical information exchange like we
now have. So, the cars were taken to mechanics who were unfamiliar with
the quirks of the DeLorean or the cars were worked on by the owners. Now,
there is nothing wrong with an owner mechanic, but I suspect many of these
were doing their own work out of sheer frustration, and with less than
adequate training or advice.
Bottom line - I still feel that the primary cause of these fires was
improper maintenance. If that were not the case, wouldn't we have seen
similar situations on other cars using the same or similar set-ups?
Living in the boonies, as I do, I have taken my car to ASE certified
mechanics who have, on occasion, done some pretty weird things to the car -
all with the best of intentions. Now, when I have to go to a
"non-DeLorean" repair facility, I take my manuals, I call one of the DML
"experts" and I research the archive before I go in. I print off anything
that I feel will make the mechanic more competent. I go over these with
him before I leave the car. If he is too busy to be bothered, the car
comes away with me.
I do not believe that the DML is burying it's head in the sand. At the
same time, I concur that a different placement for some of the components
in the engine compartment might have made sense. But, to this layman's
eye, this is much different and more complicated that Tankzilla's,
Lockzilla's and the like. Let's just make sure that anyone who messes
around in that section of the engine compartment knows what they are doing
and the potential consequences of sloppy work.
And, yes, I do carry a fire extinguisher. To me that is a necessary as a
spare tire.
I apologize in advance if the tone of this sounded like a lecture.

Hello List,
I am doing a report on the DeLorean and was wondering who they were sold
through. The local Plymouth dealer used to sell them here in Grand Rapids
Michigan. Were they only sold through one company? was there a "DeLorean
only" dealership? any info would be appreciated!
If there is anyone in the Grand Rapids Michigan area with a DeLorean that
would be willing to let me check it out I would be VERY happy. The only ones
I have seen are either indoors or under a cover.
Thanks for your time

This is not the case. The PRV-6 can get warped heads if you aren't
careful when you remove and install them. However you almost never need
to remove the heads on the PRV-6, so this is not a common problem.
Sometimes they leak with age (gaskets do that) but even that is not
usually a major problem.
I've never heard of a "warped head gasket." :}

If you want to be super safe you should carry an air pump, but a AAA card
is lighter and smaller. :}

Hello Mike,
These look like the photos on my site. Bruce Benson contributed these
photos long ago when we discussed the DMC-80 on the DML. The photos are
also at http://www.delorean.org/tgraham/dmc80.htm. They're pretty large,
but worth a look.
If it was my website that you were thinking of: my site is still around...in
fact, cars.com just did a review of it.

A great site posted these pictures of an early brochure for the bus,
but unfortunately that page is gone now (I am fairly sure). There was
some discussion about this quite a while ago, and to the best of my
knowledge these pictures are actually composites of an existing
European bus with the DMC-80 logo. This is one of DeLorean's "side"
projects that never got very far, along with the DMC-24 and DMC-44, as
it was funded by the NIDA money meant for the DMC-12, and DeLorean was
kindly asked more than once to drop the project in order to streamline
expenses.

I am a GM fan. Yet I would have to say that even though all this might be
possible, you wouldn't go too far on a tank of gas.
I am also the 2nd owner of a 1974 Stingray show-car (67,000+ miles) that
shares daily driver duty with my 81 D (5,011 miles). The Vette only gets
10.13 mpg with the L82 engine and Quad4, while the D is providing 19.37
during my 3 weeks of ownership.
(DRIVE EM !! that's what insurance is for).

With all the different versions of the Chevy 350, a person thinking
of
an engine swap, could be thinking of something as expensive, fast,
and
complex as a corvette LT1 motor. Or they could be thinking of
something
as cheep, simple and reliable as a 350 from a 1975 Caprice.
The thought of a nice simple engine mounted fuel pump, rochester
quadrajet carb, and a simple ignition system sound like a real nice
idea. Just think, you would never have to worry about tank mounted
fuel
pumps, $800 fuel distributors and failing accumulators ever again.
Just an idea

had
an adapter kit to install a 3.8 V6, or a 350 V8 in a D. Does anyone

Greg,
Just keep wiggling like a mudbug.
There's probably a burr on the tube that is hanging it up.
I did have that same problem. I don"t think that it is a
flanged fitting, It is definitely a compression fitting of
some sort and those frequently cause burrs & problems
separating the fittings.

Bottom fitting, piece of cake. Banjo fitting at top... hrmph... After
using pleanty of brute force and expletives, I have reduced a gyser to

using brand new copper seals. I did accidently use the wrong ones at
first, but the mating surfaces on the bolt, fitting, and filter are all
smooth.
So, any suggested tools or strategies?

I guess what I really want to know is, whether or not you have had any

any advice on who to choose to ship if this one falls through would be
greatly appreciated.

Greg;
I have installed several accumulators this summer and have run
into the same problem. Make sure the four bolts holding the
accumulator are snug and holding the unit in place. Place the brass
fitting back on the unit but leave loose, just backed off a turn or two.
Now give the fuel line a sharp rap with
a wrench and hammer, not a fatal blow to damage the line. This has
worked for me both times and did not cause any damage. The line should
now come off when you turn back the brass fitting.

Hi,
The key is a Volvo blank. Any decent locksmith should have the key blank
and be able to cut it. Mine is an Ilco key blank # VO 73 X29. They should
be able to come up with that or the equivelant very easily. Our local
locksmith didn't blink an eye. Don't go to Wal-mart for it. Their people
aren't trained to identify keys that well and will mess up anything out of
the ordinary. A locksmith will charge an extra 75 cents more, but will
virtually always give you a useable key the FIRST time.
Plus DMC-Houston is right in the area. THE biggest supply of DeLorean
factory and aftermarket parts around. I'm sure they could either cut one or
steer you to someone who can.

Subject: [DML] Autocross in St. Louis the weekend of the Expo
Mime-Version: 1.0
Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii"
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Hi Everyone,
A few of us in the St. Louis and central/southern Illinois area were
kicking around the idea of getting some DeLoreans out to an autocross that
is taking place on Sunday October 10th in St. Louis where the DOA Expo is
taking place. Disclaimer: This is NOT in any way affiliated with the DOA or
the Expo, and we're certainly not out to compete in any way. Just trying to
offer something a little different for those people who may be interested.
Anyway, the 10th is the last day of the DOA Expo and while there doesn't
seem to be much on the posted schedule, I'm afraid you would have to miss
the 10:00am brunch to participate in the autocross. It is being held at the
Riverport Ampitheatre grounds at the west end of St. Louis, about 20
minutes or so from the downtown area and you would need to be on-site
*before* 10am to be able to register. The events normally end by around 3
or 4pm.
The local SCCA chapter has offered to create a DeLorean only class for time
and scoring purposes if we can get 6 or more cars to compete. With less
than 6 cars we'll end up in the normal SCCA classes where the 'Vettes will
kick our b*tts :(
Autocrossing, for those of you not familiar with it, is a timed test of
driver skill. It is NOT dangerous to the car in any way, other than a
little extra tire and brake pad wear. It involves taking 3 or 4 runs of 60
seconds or less each, around a miniature road racing course built with
orange construction cones. It is held in a large open parking lot and you
run solely against the clock not against other cars. In other words, no
obstacles are present that could damage the car.
If you are interested in this, please contact me for more information. I'll
probably make up a web page in the next few days with details, additional
info, and a map to the site. But feel free to e-mail me at mnoeltne@ezl.com
to get more info, ask questions about autocrossing or anything else
concerning this. We would love to see a bunch of DeLoreans come out and
give the local SCCA guys a thrill!
Thanks

Since we're on the subject, I'm gonna "me too".
This is probably the one single problem with my D that absolutely makes me
nuts. In order to close the passenger door, it must be SLAMMED. Hard.
When I have a more petite passenger, I usually need to close the door for
them since they can't pull it down hard enough.
The problem looks like the rear latch, since it will be halfway-latched when
the front latch is completely closed. I have tried adjusting the striker
pin as far out/up as it will go with no success. The driver's door closes
perfectly and easily.
I had DMC Houston look at it in December, but once of things he was doing
was replacing the door seals and we agreed that the new seals should have
some time to seat, but it hasn't gotten any better. However, I get the
distinct impression that the door is out of alignment with the body and the
realignment procedure involves popping the torsion bars and adjusting every
stainless panel on the car!
I'm half-tempted to cut the body (!!?!) so that the striker pin will adjust
outward further, but I'm afraid that if I completely remove the pin, it's
backing plate will disappear into the door jamb forever.
I really hate slamming that door.

Freeze-12 is simply a combination of R-143A and some other gases. It is
extremely uncommon to find service centers that support this, but there
are probably some that will do a real R134 conversion for you.
As to whether or not this conversion would work effectively on a
Delorean, I really don't know. :-) Perhaps someone else could shed
some light on the issue?

To purge the fuel lines disconnect the fuel supply line leading to the fuel
distributor and place the line in a container. Jump the fuel pump (RPM
relay)
and run the pump until the fuel runs clear.
If the fuel distributor is frozen it is unlikely that the engine would run.
CAUTION: Be sure to use all standard fuel system service precautions when
servicing the fuel system.

Mark,
There are several components that can cause battery drain. The radio memory
and clock circuit are always drawing current from the battery. Although it
is a very small amount of current, if the battery is not charged by the
alternator on a regular basis, the battery will not have sufficient current
to start the car.
A faulty circuit or component can cause excessive current drain and cause
the battery to discharge in a short period of time. There are several ways
to locate a power drain, start with the most common. Pull fuse number 12
(courtesy lamps) and see if the problem goes away, if not, contact us
directly for additional test procedures.
BTW: a battery cut-off switch is highly recommended if you don't drive your
car on a regular basis.

anyone know if this is still available or what is a replacement, if not. I
am due for an oil change. My car has 6K miles on it now. I changed it at
3K miles when I got it. What weight should I use. I would prefer a direct
replacement with no adapters unless absolutely necessary. DeLorean World

Help! A critter has died in the bowels of my car. Now, I've checked
inside the car. I checked in the comparments behind the seat and under the
package shelf. I've checked in the engine compartment. I've checked in
the front trunk. All to no avail. No critter to be seen - but, boy howdy,
you can sure smell him.
Two things gave me a clue as to where he/she might be. Two dogs were
actually licking the stainless steel on the front fender just behind the
wheel well. Then, when I removed the cover to the compartment where the
tool kit is kept -- sheesh - what an awful smell.
It seems that whatever is dead has managed to crawl into the front pontoon
on the passenger's side. It apparently crawled past the point where the
opening gets smaller on top of the wheel well and then died in the space
behind the wheel well.
I believe that the top of the pontoon is empty space and the bottom is
filled with foam. To get to the space it appears I have two choices.
Remove the front fender and cut a "retrieval hole" into the GRP so as to
extract the dead critter; OR, cut the hole from the trunk side. The latter
is MUCH simpler, but the results will be more obvious. Naturally, after
removal, I could fill the upper pontoon with insulating foam which would
give backing for the piece that was removed and then have it reglassed and
repainted.
Before I do either of the above, does anyone have any other clever suggestions?
Oh, yes, option three is to sell the car to someone who has lost their
sense of smell.
Help!
