Let me begin by confirming that I love DeLoreans and drive one every day that I can, and have for the last 13 years. I wouldn't do so if I thought they were unsafe. Period. I certainly don't want to start a paranoia about driving one, and I apologize if it sounded like that. But as someone who has been working on these cars for years, I have to admit that I am greatly concerned by the number of fire totalled ones out there. Two Pacific Northwest DeLorean Club cars (out of a membership of 70-80 at the time) were lost to engine fires. I purchased one of them plus 2 others for parts; plus I have personally seen 2 more that I didn't acquire. Add to that the dozen or so photos I've seen in the last 13 years, and that's a lot of fire damaged DeLoreans. In that same time period I have not seen any other '81-'83 cars that had burned. I totally agree with Joe that the number one problem is probably the unskilled mechanic, but the engine design, with all those fuel lines over the ignition distributor, leaves a lot to be desired. No, lets not be paranoid. But we had better be very careful. Inspect your engine compartment regularly for any sign of fuel leaks, especially after anyone including professional mechanics has worked on the motor. One of the PNDC cars mentioned above was on its way home from a repair shop. As for DOA, they refused to even acknowledge my request for input. They didn't even have the decency to tell me I was wrong. I'm hoping that by discussing this openly in the DML we can stir up enough diligence to make this potential problem unworthy of further concern. By the way Dick, and others who may wonder, I sell DeLorean parts. I do not operate a repair shop for several reasons - I recently moved to the boondocks and don't have a new shop built yet; I already have a full time job; and mostly I don't consider myself qualified enough to deal with some of these issues which relate to owner safety. But I do speak from the knowledge of having owned 6 DeLoreans, and having been in contact with hundreds of other owners over the years from selling parts. I never really found a combination I liked better then the stock Delorean steering wheel. The after-market wheel I got from you is made by a company called "Grant". They make a lot of different after-market steering wheels in all size, shapes and colors. The adapter is also from Grant, but when I contacted Grant with the number stamped on the adapter ( also faxed them a drawing of the splines and taper on the steering shaft ) they told me they couldn't tell me what it was ( the number is a casting number, not a part number ) and they also said they couldn't find an adapter to match the steering shaft info I sent them. I truly think the "couldn't find a match" was actually more like "wouldn't spend the time to look " type of thing. Oh well, what do you do with companies like this ? I also contacted MOMO with the same info and got the same response of couldn't find an adapter to fit. I do think MOMO actually spent some time on their efforts though. One thing I did notice when playing with a few different style steering wheels, the stock Delorean unit really has a "deeper dish" to it then many after-market wheels. I found with most after-market units, I had to telescope the steering shaft out quite a ways so the wheel and your hands would clear the binnacle. Doing this exposed the steering shaft at the adapter base, thus not giving a very good appearance to the installed assembly. I know you can cover this up with boots or collars, but this still gives the appearance of an add-on. Like I said, I never was able to find anything I liked better then the stock Delorean wheel. Again, this is my personal opinion and I'm sure others feel differently. Maybe I just didn't find the "right" after-market wheel. I am trying to put them in. Does anyone have instructions on cutting the fabric for the two center pieces. The door panels were a snap, literally....why not the center? Also, one other MAJOR issue. I had my D at my local mechanic for an inspection and a radiator flush (had a vapor lock I think-it kept overheating as soon as you started it). Anyhow, I noticed about 4 teens and 2 mechanics admiring the engine compartment. Larry the owner told his employee to bring the car over since the owner was there to pick it up. They close the louvers etc.... I get home and want to check something in the engine compartment and the metal grate will not stay up. I look under the grate and find that the "hooking" device to keep the hood up is broken. That is that the metal arm has nothing to keep it in place, and the grate in the "up" position. My guess is that the mechanic or the teenagers "admiring/destroying" my D. broke it by just pushing down on the grate? Any suggestions????? Any help will most certainly be appreicated. Volvo used a carbon copy in the PRV engine. Engine fires haven't been a problem with them. First off one has to realize the system is under quite a bit of pressure, aprox 5.2 Bar or 75 lbs. I belive it was Claude that mentioned replaced the copper sealing washers used on both the top and bottom of the banjo fittings connecting the fuel lines to the fuel distributor. They are easy to drop when disassembling the fuel lines and aren't always the easiest thing to find on a Saturday afternoon. Once used they've been flattened and have lost some of the sealing quality they should have. Maybe the DeLorean, being a "hobby car" sees more Saturday back yard mechanics than the Volvo. The point I'm making is the system design is excellent but attention needs to be paid in making sure all connections are properly sealed. After all your holding back 75 psi. DMC Joe / DeLorean Services / Web Site: ---------- From: doctor280 To: dmcnews@egroups.com Subject: [DML] Re: 350 in a D? Date: Wednesday, September 15, 1999 12:58 AM If you want 350 cubic inches, you should have bought a different car. The Delorean was never intended to spin the tires and do 0 to 60 in 2 seconds. Mr. John Delorean set out to build the ethical sports car and I think that he did one hell of a job. The PRV-6 (B28-F) has turned out to be a solid work horse and so very dependable. Even the Volvo dealer mechanics that I visited with this week, when I was purchasing an oil filter, can not believe that Volvo discontinued their use of this engine. They said that they has never seen a PRV-6 (B28-F) that needed rebuilding. So it may not be the fastest or have the most power, but in all rights I will say that it has to be one of best engines out there. The Delorean has several great things going for it, that most cars in it's class dont. The reliability and the cost efficiency were some of the main reasons for me purchasing my Delorean. Also the ease of working on this car is fantastic. I know what some of you are saying "ease?", but trust me on this one. I have owned several cars that I would not touch a thing on because of how complex they were. The Delorean for the most part is simple to work on if you have any mechanical ability at all. Next, some of you will say, "well if the car is so reliable why are you doing all this work on it, to know how simple the car really is?" I have met two other owners that give me the pleasure of doing some of their maintenance work. Most of the repairs that I have done to their cars is because the cars have set for so long and have not been driving. (For gosh sake drive your Deloreans! It does them no good at all to just sit around and besides if you all wanted something to look at you could have bought a model kit and saved thousands of dollars.) I purchased my Delorean in Nov. of 98 and have put 7500 miles on it. The car has never left me stranded and I trust her to go anywhere. Since I purchased my Delorean I have repaired what the previous owner had not done including some updates. (The only update that my Delorean is missing is the Tankzilla. The fuel gage is working and if it is not broke dont fix it.) I have spent less money on my Delorean then my mother has on her new car, not bad for a 18 year old car. ( This includes scheduled maintenance service that she has to have done to maintain the warranty to her car. What a rip off.) So what it boils down to is that the Delorean is a great and economical way to style and profile. Dont screw up the good thing that you got. erik geerdink, my best advice for you is to take some of your free time and quit talking about cars, go to your local technical school and sign up for auto classes. Frankly, I'm surprised they ever posted my original comment, and I bet now they wish they hadn't. That "bury your head in the sand" mentality is what DOA did, and it could well have cost some owners their cars, and could be jeopardizing lives. The twin turbo car I purchased as a total caught fire in the owner's garage the minute he started it, and he managed to save his house by pushing it outside. The other PNDC car that burned was being driven home from a repair shop that had worked on the motor. He got out just in time to see his prize possession go up in flames. I too am an engineer, and a life-long mechanic and hotrodder. While I agree with DMC Joe and others that the chief problem is probably unskilled mechanics or owners tinkering with their cars, that doesn't excuse the fact that the design of having all those high pressure fuel lines directly over the top of the ignition distributer is very poor. Other than proper maintenance and diligence, I really don't have any ideas to cure the problem. I still trust the cars and drive one most of the time, but then mine is Chevy powered, with one fuel line that is no where near the ignition. And I still carry an extinguisher. I agree with your comparison to the fan fail and door lock problems. We can't pretend these defects don't exist; we need to just develop remedies for them. And that's precisely why I appealed to those "experts" with more actual repair experience than I have. But when one of the best known claims he has never seen an engine fire in one, and way up here in the boonies I have personally seen 6 plus photos of a dozen or so more, something just doesn't ring true. My only reason for bringing this up was that I felt it was a POTENTIAL problem that had been ignored too long, and I wanted to open some eyes and some dialog on it. I think I accomplished that. It remains to be seen if I am the "hero" or get vilified, which is the direction I'm betting on. Personally, if this thread saves one car or more importantly one life, then I will feel vindicated. Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I don't want to start flames here but, I have to agree w/ Robert. The DeLorean is EXTREMELY easy to work on compared to some of today's cars. I have a '95 Trans Am and it takes all day to change just the plug wires on it! Right now I have my D in pieces changing out the head gaskets. I wouldn't even think of doing this to the T/A. I do agree that the DeLorean is very qurky. It seems as soon as you fix one thing, something else goes wrong, but I believe that this is caused by bad mechanics that have worked on my D in the past. Once I started working on the car myself, I found plenty of things that other mechanics had screwed up royally! Now that I'm working on it myself, it is getting more and more reliable. (Not to mention I'm saving a fortune!) I thought other D owners were crazy when they said they used their cars as daily drivers, but, now mine's a daily driver. I once looked at an engine swap like you are considering. I was going to go with a 350 TPI out of a '88 GTA, but it would have been very expensive and the stock trans wouldn't have held up. It would take ALOT of modification to put a different engine AND transmission in there. Realistically, I purchased a Vortech V6 that will do the job nicely. It has 210 HP which would be perfect since the stock trans can take up to 250 HP. However, this would still be more headaches than it is worth. (at least right now anyway) The more dependable my D gets, the less I consider the engine swap. Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I think this is going to vary greatly according to what other cars you have worked with as to the ease of repairs, and vary with the individual cars as far as reliability. I want to state first that we've only owned our D for about 6 months, so others with longer experience may feel free to differ with my opinion :) We've put about 3000 miles on it in that time. The ONLY thing that has failed was the fuel pump and I aggravated that by running it out of gas. This, from a car that has been in storage for 12 years or more is pretty remarkable in my opinion. As far as ease of working on a D, well, that depends. I'd MUCH rather work on a '65 Mustang. That's easy! But, compared to my '95 Ford Probe GT that I drive to work daily, the D is very easy to work on. Lots more room in the engine compartment. The dash disassembles easier. Lots of other things that are easier, or no harder than working on a new FWD car. Just my $.02!! If you get them out of adjustment you can cause unneeded stress on one part of the door system. If this happens to be the outside handle mechanism it can easily break since it is all plastic construction, and the metal replacements aint cheap....(sound like the word of experience?) -SweatyEddy ----- Original Message ----- From: Jim To: Sent: Wednesday, September 15, 1999 12:48 AM Subject: [DML] Driver Side Door lock problem > When I lock my driver side door and lift up on the handle it has a > little play to it. Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit I disagree Bob. The DeLorean IS easy to work on. I've worked on just about every kind of car built in the last 20 years and I can say that the DeLorean has a kit-car type of ease of maintenance and repair. Most cars have things about the design that, when you see them, you just wonder why the engineered it to be so damned hard to work on. The DeLorean really only has one item like that and I'd say it's the distributor. :) You can barely even touch it with the tip of your finger when everything is installed. Ok...the water pump is annoying too but that's about it. The rest is really simple. The DeLorean has to be the only car I've ever worked on on which I can remove the entire injection/intake system in less than 10 minutes. Yes, I disagree. But that's what this country's for. --Rob Hook ------------------------------ message 3114 ------------------------------ http://www.eGroups.com/list/dmcnews/?start=3114 X-Mailing-List: dmcnews@egroups.com X-URL: http://www.egroups.com/list/dmcnews/ From: "BRUCE BENSON" References: <199909160227.TAA19622@mx1.techline.com> Date: Wed, 15 Sep 1999 22:28:01 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Subject: [DML] Re: Fwd: Rejected. Ferrari, Porsche, Saab, the list goes on, all used the same design. The Volvo has the identical system down to the last banjo fitting. There were never recalls nor a history of fires with Volvos. Now if you suspected electrical components as the culprits in DeLorean fires I'd be very inclined to agree with you. The suggestion that we should figure a way to redesign the fuel system so it's idiot proof doesn't make sense to me. Even though many of us find the DeLorean simple to work on compared to current automobiles, it's still a complex array of components that need to be assembled and adjusted in a specific manner to function safely and properly. I've been an automotive engineer for over 30 years and my opinion of the K-Jetronic system has always been extremely high. It was the ultimate mechanical injection system until all electronic systems came along.
