Once you have your new material, take the old cloth off the headliner panel, (or as much will come off in one piece) and use it as a pattern for cutting out your new piece. Don't expect the foam backing to come off with the fabric, you'll probably have to scrape that off later. After applying the 3M Super Strength 99 glue (make sure to buy that kind!!) to the now bare door headliner board, start pushing the new piece of fabric down in the center and work your way out. Be careful that the new fabric doesn't fold over itself in the recessed area on the board. You can avoid this by stretching the fabric carefully at the appropriate places. Total cost for the entire roof is about $20 depending on where you get your fabric. I am not compensated in any way to endorse 3M products, it's just that if you don't use this particular brand (available at home goods stores) your headliner will fall back down after a few months. This 3M stuff is STRONG...it's holding my side view mirror on right now!! Good luck, Josh VIN 5102 CatfishEd@aol.com wrote: > My headliners did the same thing with the foam deteriorating. The fuel system is a high pressure situation and "ANY" gasoline in the engine compartment can mean a FIRE! Don't even think about starting your D until you get all the fuel lines re seated, wash out the whole compartment and dry it out before starting the D again.. To seat the spark plug wire, get it on the plug and slide your hand down the wire to the plug pushing and letting it slip through your fingers as you go, you will feel a slight snap as the cap slips over the plug top connector. I had an opportunity today to get down to see this DeLorean. It is Vin# 2701, August 81. It is a 5 speed with the black interior, and both the hood lines, and the gas flap. The car is showing just over 17K miles, but has evidently had angle drive problems. This car does not have the update spray paint in the engine well, still has the Ducillier Alternator, and seems to be riddled with the standard electrical problems. It has Firestone tires, relatively new, but the tread on the front and back do not match. The dash has a crack above the glovebox, that has been repaired by an amateur. The stereo is a cheapie. This car has the antenna in the windshield, but someone had at one time added the power antenna, that has since broken and has lost parts. The front facia has some SERIOUS eyebrows. The normal "hot start" problems exist. Thats the bad news. The good news is that the body is perfect! The doors lift all the way up with authority, and the headliners are in good shape. I was impressed that it has been sitting outside and is not full of water, of course, it hasn't rained around here in a loooong time. The rear lens have been recently replaced. The fella that owns the car is named Jimmy. His phone number is 662-837-9615. He will take considerably less than the $16,500 he is asking. If you want more info, please e-mail me directly or give me a call at 901-853-8341. The frames are epoxy coated which was designed to seal the ordinary steel frames inside the epoxy and keep out all moisture. Unfortunately this design didn't work well in practice as the epoxy cracks and allows water in. Then it makes things worse as the epoxy actually traps water inside it, in contact with the frame. It would have been better if they had just painted or undercoated the frames like everybody else, but that's not what they did. Other than rust there are no structural weaknesses or deterioration to watch out for, unless the car has been in an accident. I suspect that while working with the hoses to get the last spark plug out, you fractured one of the fuel lines to the injectors. These can be replaced through the normal parts places or you can try a local Volvo dealership or any other good foreign car specialists. DO NOT START THE CAR UNTIL THIS IS FIXED!!! I had a similar problem with the leftmost rear injector on my car. It actually caught fire while my wife and I were riding in the car. Fortunately, I noticed the flames about when they started. Diet Dr. Pepper is a pretty good fire retardent. The only damage was some soot on the engine cover and some blistered insulation on the wiring harness in the area. The headliner material cannot be fixed, as the felt fabric has separated from the underlying foam core. Any competent automotive upholstery shop can fix this problem for around $50. Take the headliners out of the car and to the shop. They will strip the old headliner material off the cores and replace it with an almost identical material. If you need new firtree fasteners (the plastic things that look like christmas trees) you can get them from the shop or from DeLorean parts providers. I had to go the parts provider route beause the fasteners are not a standard size. My limited understanding is that the gas travels through the fuel distributor before being sent to the individual cylinders. You have a serious problem!!! My mechanic has told me, as have several D owners, that a new distributor costs around $1800 to $2000. There is another possibility, however. Call Python Corporation in Stanton, CA at 1-800-959-2865. I've been told that they rebulid the Bosch fuel distributors that are found on the DeLorean at a very reasonable price. I've never used this company so I cannot vouch for their work, but my mechanic has used them for this very operation, and he speaks very highly of them. Perhaps someone on the list has had Python rebuild a fuel distributor for them and can tell you the results. No pump or can of flat stuff, but she offers me her donut. Almost fit! She appologises she couldn't help me! I now go off in search of an air pump or flat fix can. A quarter mile is a bar and someone gives me 1/2 an old can. I buy them a drink and have one myself. Hear comes the good part: I get back to the D to find a new can of flat fixed next to my tire!! That blew me away. I just stood there for a minute feeling goodness. What a nice thing! I don't even know who she is. There's only a little more. The old 1/2 can didn't work. The new one did. All you need to do is tighten the bolt from where its leaking and you should be ok. If you don't want to start the car to check for a fuel leak, you can just 'jump' the RPM relay to make the pump run constant. (check the back issues or you can email me directly for details) Tighten the bolt, then jump the pump, and check for leaks. After you finish, reinstall the RPM relay and let the car sit for a while. (depending on how much gas has been sprayed) You should be fine. First off I have to know there are 2 different ECU units correct? One is called the Lambda ECU and the other is the one that controls the Idle Speed Regulator, right??. I took off the wood panel behind the drivers side and saw that there were 2 blue tube things...one was coming off of the Lambda ECU and the other was coming from an other unit that was mounted underneath the other ECU (the one that controls the Idle Speed Regulator) One of my questions is what do these 2 blue tube things do. And also I have no power going to my frequency valve and the Control Pressure regulator. Would that cause my car not to run right? Right now when I turn it on the car will rev up to about 3500-4000 RMP but then if u let go of the gas it will idle at around 1500-2000 RMP. But then when you put your foot all the way on the gas pedal again it will work its way back up to about 3000RMP. But again if u have your foot lightly on the gas it will go up to about 3500RPM. At first I thought the problem was mechanical so I put a different Fuel Distributor on it, I got new injectors, the fuel pump is working so I am narrowing the problem down to something electrical so I am still trying to figure it out. I am also thinking it might be the Oxygen sensor, maybe that isn't sending a pulse to the Lambda ECU and maybe thats why I don't have any power going to the Frequency Valve. Could that be a possibility? DMC Joe does that sound right? Anyways, I am selling this car so I want to get it to run better for the future owner. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. The switch only closes a ground with no current going through the switch when the ignition is turned off. Therefore the switch could be used on a regular basis. BTW: I really don't believe it is necessary to disable the engine for security reasons for the following reasons. A) The DeLorean has an extremely low theft rate. B) Most car thieves avoid steeling cars that they are not absolutely sure how to start and drive. C) If you lock your doors the DeLorean is one of the most difficult cars to brake into due to it's twin lock latches and non standard latch mechanism which is virtually impossible to by-pass. This action overheats the circuit and causes the door lock circuit breaker to open & close (clicking in the electrical compartment). This will eventually damage or burn out the door lock solenoids if it hasn't already done so. This is why we advise that the door lock module be disconnected. As I had mentioned, the door lock module is goofy. Certain voltage and or ground changes in the electrical system will cause self-activation of the module. In some cases the solenoids will burn in the locked position, this condition could leave you locked out, or even worse, being locked in your car. Not just inconvenient but very embarrassing. You can't say you weren't warned; disconnect the door lock module. Mine did the same thing for a while. If you look at the left door jamb, you'll see two small buttons that are depressed by the door as it closes. One controls the "door open" light and buzzer. If you remove the switch carefully, you can adjust a knurled nut on the back of the switches to increase or decrease sensitivity. If you move it back and forth, you should find a setting that eliminates the light coming on. BUT be sure not to bend any of the contacts on the switches, and reattach the switch carefully with the original screws. These are very flimsy and very touchy switches! Another thought ... check the strikeplates on the door itself to be sure they are firmly fastened and that they actually meet the switch plungers. Good luck! There have been far too many DeLorean engine fires, and it is a subject that seems to be very seldom discussed. Over the years I have parted out 3 DeLoreans that were destroyed by engine fires, one a twin turbo. Plus I have seen several others that I passed on due to their condition or price. DOA even published a bunch of photos some years ago of destroyed cars, but when I pointed out to them that considering the 8,000+ total run of cars, the number of ones totalled by fire was extremely high, they refused to acknowledge that there might be a problem. By comparison, Saturn recalled tens of thousands of cars when only a very small number had had fires. I asked DOA's "technical experts" to look into the problem for the good of all owners (since in our case there is no one to recall the cars) but they chose to ignore it and me, apparently presuming it would go away. That, more than my problems with DOA management, was what finally caused me to cut my ties with that group. Again, I know no one wants to hear this, but the risk of fuel fed engine fires in our cars is a major problem. You need to keep a good eye on your engine compartment, and fix any fuel leaks BEFORE ever running the car again. Remember, the fuel distributer, with 10+ fuel lines going to it, sits right over the top of the ignition distributer. And ALWAYS carry a fire extinguisher - it may save your car and your life. Lets see if the DML has the guts (which DOA did not) to tackle this issue. I hope the moderators will see fit to agree. Went back to a friend's home where I parked it (around 2:00 a.m.) and it would not start. After trying to figure out the problem I was tired and got a ride from my friend to my home. In the morning I called Rob Grady who's shop is only 20 minutes away or so. He came out with the flat-bed and I met him where the car was parked. Before putting the car on the flat-bed, Grady got in to give it a try. In 5 seconds he started the Delorean. I was in awe. This man was a God or had some supernatural power. Rob Grady got out of the car and said, "I found the problem, you had it in neutral." I didn't know whether to laugh or cry. Grady, being the genuinely nice and fair person I know him to be didn't even charge me for the trip with the flat-bed. I guess he probably figured my overwhelming embarrasment was punishment enough. Well, that is my story. Who's next. By the way, pass the marshmallows, the camp fire Delorean stories are just warming up... Todd Z. We have been servicing and researching DeLoreans since 1984. With hundreds of DeLoreans in our data base I know of none having engine fires. I don't know of any internal combustion engine that does not have fuel lines running near ignition sources. A fire extinguisher is a good idea in any car, the DeLorean is no more prone to engine fires than any other gasoline powered vehicle. The biggest potential for engine fires is caused by inexperienced shade-tree mechanics not using the proper techniques when servicing their cars. Lets be careful what we say about these cars on this public forum. The car already has an unfounded questionable reputation. Lets not "throw more gas on the fire" by making people think that the car will burst into flames at any moment. Lets tell the facts as they are. The DeLorean CIS fuel injection system is one of the most reliable fuel systems, built by the leader in the industry; Bosch. All the critical fuel lines are heavy duty high pressure lines with all copper and brass fittings. These fuel lines and fittings don't just fail by use or age. Owners who elect to service their own cars need to know and understand fuel system procedures & precautions. A good example is house wiring. We know that all home owner can change a light bulb, some can replace a light fixture, and few can run circuits from the service panel. All of these items can be potentially dangerous or lethal. You know as well as I that when we post messages like this one there will be many replies for the next several days that will say: "I recently heard that DeLoreans can catch on fire easily". In closing I agree with you that we should caution owners about potential fuel system fires and keep them posted on proper service techniques and periodic inspections. I agree that the DMC has had more than its share of engine fires; or at least that I have heard of more DeLorean engines fires than just about any car other than old VW's (which I also own). The reasons can be many. Howver, I don't think you can discount the fact that many of the owners are inadvertantly, either the culprits or contributors to the problem. I'm sure that Erik is not the first to loosen, tear or weaken a fuel line while changing a plug. He is fortunate in that he noticed his problem. There are a lot of lines, as you pointed out, there at the "back" of the engine. Working on the spark plugs, distributor, or just plain trying to "armorall" everything to get it to look nice can create or contribute to the problem. I won't discuss what the DOA did or did not do. I think such a conversation can too easily cause this list to degenerate into something we won't be proud of. However, if the DML members are to look to each other to find "fixes" to this problem, most of us would look to professionals to make the suggestions. That means, among others, YOURSELF. Naturally, input from some of the VERY talented back yard mechanics who own DeLoreans is invaluable, but if, in fact, a problem exists and if, in fact, a fix can be made, I would expect the LEADERS of the fix-it crew would be people like Rob Grady, Don Steger, Stephen Wynne, Joe LoRe, and Darryl Tinnerstat (any other professional automtive technicians who work on the DeLorean on a regular basis). As an owner (not as a moderator) I'd like to toss the ball back into your court. The DeLorean dash board has a metal plate that is cut for a older style shaft radio. (Part # 106639, Page 7-3-0) There on not many of them left, so when you find them they are expensive. Some owners have chosen to not cut the plate, and install a newer shaft style unit. Kenwood had (I think it was discontinued recently) a unit that was shaft style, and would control a CD changer. If you can still find one, (Model 3001) they had a reasonable price. If you want a basic system, or even a single amplifier this is a good choice. If you are a audio maniac (like myself) I dont think this unit will meet your requirements. Other owners have simply cut the plate. I am currently in the situation of making this decision. I have my speaker box almost complete (details to follow), all the amplifiers and speakers are in my garage, and the DIN style head unit is in the mail. The way I look at it, my choices are: 1. Cut the thing, and destroy a rare original part. 2. Wait until I find someone who has one that is cut already that wants to go back to stock. 3. Wait until someone makes a aftermarket reproduction at a reasonable price. 4. Have a reproduction made locally. The real WAY out option is to hope that someone makes a high quality shaft style CD controller or MP3 player. As far as "how" to cut, any decent car stereo installer should be able to cut it for you. I went ahead and cut the plate. I don't feel that this hurts the value of the car because kits are made to switch a DIN cutout back to a shaft style. Put in one of those and the stock radio and you won't be able to tell the difference. This is a minor originality item compared to the major difference it makes to have a clean sounding stereo. OK, it'll cost you a few points in your next concours, but I like to drive my car too, not just show it. However, great care should be taken when cutting the opening. Unless you're very good at such work I wouldn't recommend doing it yourself. ================================================================ Ken Montgomery Sacramento, CA VIN #10911 'OUTTIME' http://www.jps.net/arkham/delorean01.htm mailto:kenm@csus.edu Northern California DeLorean Motor Club http://members.tripod.com/ncdmc/ Keeper of the DeLorean Owners Directory http://www.dmcnews.com mailto:directory@dmcnews.com ================================================================ ------------------------------ message 3022 ------------------------------ http://www.eGroups.com/list/dmcnews/?start=3022 X-Mailing-List: dmcnews@egroups.com X-URL: http://www.egroups.com/list/dmcnews/ From: "Hart, Paul" Date: Mon, 13 Sep 1999 15:12:04 -0700 MIME-Version: 1.0 Subject: [DML] Re: Aftermarket steering wheels Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit If you look close, and are familiar with ORIGINAL pieces - you will agree that this is an original wheel, with the center covered in fabric and the "top-arch" cut out and extension handles inserted, doesn't seem too safe or cool to me. Some have long black plastic valve stems, others have short black ones, others have black plastic with a white plastic air release piece and yet others have what appears to be stainless steel valve stems. The caps I have noticed are black plastic, brass, stainless steel and none at all on the stems with the white air release piece. Can anyone tell us what the factory produced by Vin #? When complete, we will be able to offer a complete replacement panel made to either replace the original to fit the stock radio, or a custom panel cut out to fit whatever radio face you want. The vents and controls will fit this new panel the same as stock. (Note, this custom panel is still limited to YOU making sure the radio you choose will fit in the space available ) All you will have to do is send us a cutout diagram for the radio you are going to use and we will fabricate a complete panel assembly to fit. This way you will be able to save your "original" panel for later replacement if you want to go back with the stock radio. We are working on having these panel assemblies ready in time for the DOA Expo. Cost is going to be in the $100 to $150 range. If anyone has any interest, please e-mail me directly. I didn't want my first post to this list to be a negative one, but what the heck... Personally, I was not impressed at all. Very simple and overwieght typographic treatment with cheese-o-la lens flair effects straight out of the box. I guess I expected a little more from John D. My appologies if the person who did this site is on this list, but I call 'em as I see 'em. I hope this site is no reflection on how the new car is going to turn out. All glitz and no substance... Can I help it if I'm a graphic design professor? On a lighter note: Kudos to all the people on this list who have offered advice and opinions. This list has convinced me that there is a great community to rely on and I have decided to buy a D after years of internal debate after being on this list only 2 months. I'm looking for one in the $12k range if anyone has any ideas...
