When the switch is turned on the fans work, but about 30 seconds later they turn off, even though the switch is on. After a minute or so they come back on. Could this be a problem with a relay? I have installed the relay update kit, but would fanzilla help this situation? If you upset the setup (Wheel sizes) provided by Lotus you will be in B I G trouble if you rolled your car as if it lands on the roof you are screwed. (Gullwings won't open) With the setup as is you can roll the DMC as many times as you like and providing it is on flat ground it will land back on its wheels EVERY single time. I know due to the low slung stance that this would be a hard thing to do but even so it should never be a point to be ignored. Christopher M. Wow, recorded for posterity! Chris Hawes asked about experiences with the twin turbo set-up. Here's an overview. I've been drving twin turbo's since 1988. First on an 81 automatic and now on an 83 manual. Between the two cars I have about 70,000 miles experience with the Island Turbo kit. I drove the 81, automatic, about 50,000 miles after the turbo installation. I would not turbo an automatic again. It is hard to maintain the rpms necessary to get the boost to make the turbos worthwhile. In order to make best use of the turbos, I did a lot of "shifting" with the automatic. This, in turn, may be why I had some transmission problems. Also, I had the wastegates set at 7.5 lbs. That produced too much detonation. I did put on an aftermarket knock sensor which would retard the timing when it detected pinging, but I was never satisfied with it. The 83 manual is a wholly different story. It is easy (and fun) to work the gears to maintian the rpms necessary to go into boost almost instantly. Yes, there is a little lag, but not too much since the IHI turbos are quite small. I have these units set up at 6 lbs. Overheating: that was a problem until I replaced the original radiator with a brass, triple core unit (PJGrady). Now, I run as cool or cooler that stock D's. Sound: Yes, it sounds "like a V-8". It is a fairly low, throaty sound. For some it might be a bit loud, but a resonator tip could lower the decibels a bit more. Mpg: Depends on how you drive it. I just finished a 4000 mile trip in two weeks with some DeLorean friends. Drove a couple of days on Interstates @ 80mph for hours. Then, drove in mountainous country for much more of the time. I've thrown away my exact mpg calculations, but I think I averaged 23-25 mpg for the trip. Are they worth the expense? If you really drive your car, especially out on the open roads, I'd say absolutely yes. They turn the DeLorean into a very competent road car. If you only drive the car a 1000 or so miles per year as many seem to do, then I'd probably say NO, unless you have money to throw away. Hope that answers the turbo questions. The Motor Trend 50th Anniversary Collectors' Edition (Sept '99 sealed in plastic wrap) not only has some pictures and text (inacurate) about the Delorean, but a magnifying glass will reveal a special surprise. Page 152 has the write-up and a nice picture, page 102 has a nice picture, and page 70 has a picture of an orange/red '79 BMW M1 that looks very much like one of our painted beauties. OK here is the surprise. With a magnifying glass (or your eyes if they are better than mine), look on the front cover in the middle of the page under the 'coll' in collectors'. It's too bad the picture wasn't more clear. I could have turned this into a 'where's Waldo?' type of deal or 'where is the Delorean' by saying "there are 3 pictures of a Delorean, can you find them all?". I wonder if anyone else saw this? I should get a gold star for this one. P.S. I don't read magazines with a magnifying glass, I was looking closely at the Porsche with all wheels off of the ground and thougtht "what is that next to it under collectors?" So, first, let me get this off my chest: Borders CAN get it and Amazon CAN get it - - they don't want to. It isn't cost effective. That's the way the big chains operate. Go to your local independent bookstore and ask for an "out of print" book search - and give them the title. The search costs nothing (occasionally you'll find a store that charges $1 for the service). When they locate a copy they will inform you as to condition and cost. Then, it's up to you. Then, Manual or Automatic (automatic has a higher final gear ratio - thus poorer mileage). The highest reports I've heard from people I trust is 28 mpg on trips at honest speed limit speeds. Since I'm planning on attending the upcoming DOA Expo, I figured I'd use this opportunity to look around St Louis and also take a look at the host hotel, the Regal Riverfront, and it's facilities. I actually stopped one afternoon and spent some time at this hotel. It seems typical of most large city downtown type business hotels. It is an older hotel which looks like it has gone thru a remodeling in the last few years which seems to have been very nicely done. The facilities seem typical for this type of hotel with the normal swimming pools, game rooms, banquet rooms, restaurants and lounge / bars thru out. I'm sure it is capable of handling all the events scheduled by the DOA with no problem. I did find out a few things that I thought some people planning on attending this event should be aware of though. This hotel is located right in downtown St Louis, with the Interstate and Arch grounds directly to the East, office buildings directly to the North and a public parking garage across the street to the West. When I pulled up in front of the hotel on a circle drive-thru off the main city street, I was informed that the hotel has NO local parking facilities and that all parking is across the street in the 5 story public parking garage. You can't even park in the city street out in front of the hotel because it's a bus stop. The hotel uses the street / entry level of this parking garage for hotel parking. Once parked, you walk across the garage to an escalator which takes you down under the street. You walk thru a tunnel over to the lower levels of the hotel and then up two more escalators and across the lobby to the reception desk. It's a pretty good hike. If you decide to unload your luggage at the hotel entrance before going to the parking garage, I want to warn you to be very careful when pulling back onto the city street. The ramp at the end of the circle drive is very steep and one needs to be careful about dragging the front end of the Delorean at the bottom of the ramp. I also asked a few other questions about parking arrangements for the Expo and was told: 1) the only parking they have available is in this garage 2) this garage can not accept trucks pulling trailers / car haulers ( these rigs have to park in a lot under a bridge about 3-4 blocks away south of the Arch grounds ) and 3) there is NO security supplied by the hotel for our vehicles in the garage. Please note: This is a public garage which seems to be used by many people working downtown during the day. Access to it is un-restricted. I was informed by the hotel that if we wanted, they could make arrangements to supply security for this event at an additional cost of $600 per day. I understand from other Delorean owners that this is an option the DOA has decided not to accept. Of course I guess if your flying in from the West Coast, this is something that doesn't concern you. Like I said, I'm still planning on attending this event. The only thing that has changed for me is now I'm not driving my Delorean. It will stay home in it's garage where I know it's safe. I was looking forward to getting the Delorean out for the drive too. Oh well ! I'll drive the van or maybe now I'll even look into air fare. I guess when you look at the schedule of Expo events, you don't really need to have your car there. Almost all the events are of a social nature and are held either at the host hotel or within walking distance. The DOA has arranged bus transportation for many of the other events. The brown/yellow wire is connected to terminal # 1. The brown wire next to this wire is not used. Finally connect a short jumper wire between terminal # 2 and the alternator output post. The bulk of the remaining cars were certainly sent to Consolidated in Columbus Ohio, but there were quite a few hundred cars sold at auctions in the UK (British Car Auctions). Also, the receiver sold new cars to a number of dealers/collectors, and there were five cars auctioned at the factory when all the tools and equipment were finally auctioned off. Not to mention two transporters carrying twelve new cars that were hijacked by the carrier responsible for shipping the cars from the factory to the docks. They were also subsequently auctioed off in Belfast.
