Turbos do take time to spool up, this has been called turbo lag. With superchargers the boost is there all the time and when the engine does not require the boost it is by passed as to not load the engine. When boost is needed the bypass is closed off and you have instant power. The sad thing is that a supercharger is not an option for the Delorean, because as far as I know no one make one for it. Both locations are in the drivers footwell. You will find the switch just to the left of the pedal box on the firewall or further left on the fender wall near the hood latch lever. If you haven't had any problems with the switch leave it alone. Concerning your Lambda Counter, these units have a "0" failure rate. You may want to mount the extra one as an interesting conversation piece. Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Jim, There is supposed to be an open-ended hose in that vicinity but I can't tell if that's the one. My open hose is bent in a "U" shape downward and not sticking straight out, presumably to keep water out. That "canister" is the oil fill cap and (I think) vents the crankcase pressure. On my engine, the larger unclamped hose removes easily, but is snug (it doesn't fall off by itself). I also was missing my intake hose, and searched high and low for a substitute, eventually bought a generic that wouldn't work, and basically wasted allot of time. One call to USADMC put the exact right part in my hands two days and $20 later. (It was about $20, don't quote me.) I found some highly noxious spray-on paint remover that did a real number on the paint and the trim adhesive, so much so that I though I'd strip the side windshield trim pieces as well. Ha ha! They're aluminum! The paint didn't come off quite as easily as from the stainless piece, but now all three of those pieces are bare and it looks great. The header piece needs to be textured, tho. I buffed it with a Scotch-Brite pad until my arms were sore, and it looks OK, but it doesn't quite match the texture of other panels. Of course, the aluminum pieces don't really match anything, except maybe the wheels. :-) Gus Schlachter Austin, TX VIN# 4695 > -----Original Message----- > From: David Sontos [mailto:dsontos@sybercom.net] > Subject: [DML] Re: paint > > > Removing the trim piece above the windshield is a real pain. > There are four (?) screws under > the outer rubber trim piece on each door side. This is a great photo opportunity and makes for a dramatic setting for our cars. We'll be planning to arrive at the Blackhawk at Noon in case you can't make the breakfast. We'll also have a late lunch in one of the many fine restrauants in the plaza. Please contact me and let me know if you can make the gathering. We need to let both the restaurant and the Blackhawk know how many people and cars to expect. If you're looking for something to do on the day before, check out http://www.vtr.org/db/auto/events/event-summary.html. Click on the 'Get Details' button on the first event. This is the 1999 Palo Alto British Car Meet, El Camino Park, Saturday & Sunday, September 11th & 12th On Saturday, the group will be doing a morning Brunch and Cruise to The Sea, coordinated by British Car Magazine. Cars will be staged from the El Camino Park parking lot between 8:00AM & 10:00AM. There will be an optional brunch at a pub on the coast at its conclusion. The price is free, but please let the British Car Magazine staff know if you are going to attend. Call: 650-949-9680 or email: BritCarMag@aol.com. Another event coming up is the Bear Valley Lodge "Cruisin' in the Colors" car show and "fall foliage poker run" on Oct 15-17 Contact James Cooper at WtrResQ@aol.com (510)582-7834 for more info. Our October meeting will be on the 24th. Plans are still up in the air, but what we're looking to do is a special tour of the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose. Stay tuned for details. Also be sure to check out the NCDMC website. You can post announcements there and see photos from past events. The link for the Blackhawk is: http://www.blackhawkauto.org/ Write to me if you need a map of how to get to the restraurant. Thanks! Turbo cars are that way in general. The trouble is that the engine, as it slows down with the throttle closed, can no longer accept all the air that the turbo is blowing. Then pressure builds up and the turbo, fighting against it, slows down. This is why blow-off valves exist; when the throttle is released the valve opens and allows the turbo to blow into the atmosphere. That way no pressure builds up and the turbos spin freely. Unfortunately the currently available Island turbo kit (which is the only one I know about) does not have a blow off valve, to the best of my knowledge. Fortunately, because most turbo DeLoreans run low boost and the twin turbos spool up quickly anyway, the effect is not that great. It's true that automatic transmissions do not have this problem (as much) because you do not need to release the throttle when they shift. However because of the gear ratios involved, you will still have better overall performance with a 5-speed. ------------------------------ message 2797 ------------------------------ http://www.eGroups.com/list/dmcnews/?start=2797 X-Mailing-List: dmcnews@egroups.com X-URL: http://www.egroups.com/list/dmcnews/ Date: Mon, 06 Sep 1999 11:31:32 +0000 From: Sverker Lundgren MIME-Version: 1.0 References: <7qe7eg$bstj@eGroups.com> Subject: [DML] Re: door struts Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit delorean502@excite.com wrote: > > Well, since I was obviously wrong about getting the struts rechargered > I now need to find a strut elsewhere. My turbo charged DeLorean is an absolute "rush" to drive. It is responsive, strong, and has an exhilerating "swoosh" between gears. What you have Dave is the original showroom sales brochure that was available to the general public in DeLorean new car dealerships across the country. In mint condition this brochure could bring upwards of $50. There is almost always one for sale on eBay. One sold yesterday for $35 (Item #155016708). I bought one last winter on eBay in absolutely mint condition for $40 for my DeLorean literature collection. There are quite a few still available in mint condition so one in any condition less than mint is not worth much. The one that boggles my mind is the book, "DeLorean - Stainless Steel Illusion", Newport Press ISBN 0-930880-09-9. I have seen this out-of-print 160 page hardback book sell on eBay in the past for well over $300. BTW, this is an excellent book and should be on the required reading list of any DeLorean enthusiast. Another good publication that is still available at retail through the DeLorean Owners Association is the 172 page paperback Brooklands Books "DeLorean Gold Portfolio 1977-1995". This book is a collection of reprinted DeLorean articles originally published in magazines such as Road & Track and Car & Driver. DOA sells this book at retail on their web site for $24.95. I have seen this book represented on eBay as "rare", "out of print", and "hard to find", and selling for more than $50. This book should also be on your required reading list. Another item you will frequently find on eBay is the "DMC" logo license plate. Also represented by eBay sellers as "rare" to "extremely rare", it has also sold for over $50. It is available new, at retail, from DeLorean Motor Company, Houston, on their web site for $12.95! Several list members have brought to my attention that you all are suddenly wondering who I am and why I mentioned contacting JZD, and I was told someone even asked about the odd photograph located on my Web page index! Handshakes all around, great to meet you, my name is David Toscano. I own VIN4337 (81, automatic, grey interior) and have been a lifelong automotive enthusiast. I am a "full-time" law enforcement officer and a "leisure time" freelance journalist, usually writing about antiterrorism training or military/police concerns. I was approached by an editor from The Robb Report last spring and asked to put together a feature article about the new DeLorean sports car for publication in their August, 1999, issue special "Men and Machines." Unfortunately, JZD did not want to release too many details too soon to the public and the article was scrapped. I am currently working on a piece for another automotive magazine with JZD's guidance and permission. The new article will probably not be published until February of next year at the earliest. I will announce more details as they unfold. Oh, and about the photo on my Web page, I am not in it! It was taken by an acquaintance after Mardi Gras (1995, I believe) and is the last known photo of my friend Jean Lupre, the woman wearing the jester hat. Jean has been missing since a few days after that shot was taken and the photo is there for friends to recall what she looks like and in hope that someone will recognize her. Again my apoligies for not explaining myself earlier, and a hearty "thank you" to all who have helped me out. Take care, D. That way no > pressure builds up and the turbos spin freely. Unfortunately the > currently available Island turbo kit (which is the only one I know about) > does not have a blow off valve, to the best of my knowledge. This statement isn't quite right and needs to be clarified. Actually a blow off valve is something used in the CART racing series cars. It limits turbo boost to the CART rules by opening, or blowing off, when a CART driver dials his boost higher than allowed by the CART rules. When that happens he must return to the pits to have the blow off valve reset. Our DeLorean turbos have what's called wastegates. These divert the exhaust gases that drive the turbo around the impellers when the pre-determined level of boost is reached. They use spring loaded or linkage activated valves that open at pre-determined boost levels. The single turbos use a remote wastegate installed down stream of the turbo and the twins, Islands offering, have interrogated wastegate, built in to the turbos, to accomplish this. When the exhaust spins the turbo's impeller to the speed that produces the desired boost level, the excess exhaust is diverted around the impellers to maintain the level of boost that the system was designed to produce. None of this process involves anything that happens when the throttle is closed. Driving with a turbo requires some practice whereby the driver learns what it takes to get into the boost area and staying there during the up shift process. If it's the gasket it won't effect > engine operation, it just sounds bad. There is a third possible cause. There is a metal heat shield rivited on the top of the cross over pipe. It is not unheard of to have the rivets loosen up to the point that the metal shield rattles when the engine is revved to any sort of RPMS. I built an LED solenoid-signal monitor, and sure enough, sometimes the third-gear solenoid signal stays high (LED off) on powerup and/or doesn't return to high after a stop. The second-gear signal seems to behave normally. Symptoms go away after warmup. Ho hum, you say--another poor schmuck with a bad governor computer. Well, maybe so, but there's more: 1) My back up lights are always on when the engine is in park, neutral, or reverse. They go out in Drive, 1, or 2. 2) The engine will start in park, reverse, neutral, or drive, but not in 1 or 2--the start inhibit function is clearly confused. 3) On multiple (but not all) occasions, I started the car with the A/C running, the third-gear solenoid LED came up off, and briefly powering off the A/C made the LED come on and operate properly. 4) Downshifting to 1 or 2 has no obvious effect, even when the LEDs show normal shifting. I.e., shifting to 2 never seems to force a downshift, and starting in 1 does not force the trans to stay in first gear. 5) Downshifting on full-throttle functions normally. 6) The voltage across the solenoid test-points in the engine compartment reads around 10 volts. So, is all of this related or do I have multiple problems? I am a little fuzzy on how many inputs the computer has. I assume it takes several inputs from the multi-function switch. The switch is obviously screwing up somehow. Is it possible that this is confusing the computer? Is there some adjustment related to the switch that will get it back into synch with the gear-shift control? Is 10 volts normal or could a power problem be causing compter malfunction? Is this why turning off the A/C often helps? What's with the backup lights? Should I just send in my $400? Pete Lucas VIN #6703 P.S. -- Is any progress being made on a reengineered computer? Seems like it could be done pretty easily with a $6 PIC microprocessor and a few bits. If anyone is actively working on this, I could probably help. It was in our Sunday paper, so that in itself is a rarity, because we don't have too many De Loreans popping up around here. Anyway, we were wondering two things... First of all, what are the ORIGINAL tires for a D ('82, if that makes any difference). I know a lot of you guys seem to like Yokohamas, but are those the original tires for the car?
