It could be that one or both cooling fans are not coming on when they are needed. There are a number of components that could be at fault. The easiest cure would be if the fan control bypass has come loose or blown a fuse. This is in the relay compartment, near the passenger side door. Go to the DMCNews 'zine page: http://www.dmcnews.com/zine.html and download Issue #1 for free. It might contain the cure. While you are there you should download the other two free issues and print them out. You can get one of these stick-on antennas (looks similar to a narrow piece of scotch tape with a tiny wire imbedded in it) at most any full service auto parts store. I bought one years ago, from Pep Boys I think, for my boat and installed it in a hollow space between an exterior and an interior fiberglass panel adjacent to where I mounted the AM/FM stereo radio (automotive style). It works great. While my application is totally out of sight, I don't think it would look very good installed where you could see it. But in any case, yes, they are available. Start at the source, remove the fuel pump and check everything from the pick up screen to the pump. A kinked or defective pick-up hose will cause a drop in fuel pressure. The fuel enrichment circuit also has a direct effect on engine performance. A defective RPM or Lambda relay will also cause lack of power. The factory installed door lock module has a strange habit of activating itself whenever it feels like. When it does relays inside the module will cause the lock solenoids to "hold in". This condition will cause the lock solenoids to overheat. Continuous voltage on the solenoids will burn up their coils and will cause the door lock circuit breaker to open and close. This high current drain will eventually drain the battery. In some cases this condition can cause the lock solenoids to hold in the locked position preventing one from exiting or entering the car. If you want to return the central lock system to full operation without any further damage you will have to replace any defective solenoids and purchase the Lockzilla from PJ Grady. The most common cause of a constantly high temperature is trapped air in the coolant lines. The problem is easily corrected by bleeding the excess air out of the system. The cooling fan system is also responsible for keeping the engine cool when driving in stop & go traffic or idling. Problems in the fan circuit can cause high temperature readings. I am a little concerned about the oil light. It is probably caused be a defective warning light sender. When the warning light comes on what is the oil pressure gauge reading ? If the gauge reads below the halfway mark you may have a more serious problem. With the fans and AC on the voltage may drop to 12 - 13 volts. If the AC mode switch and or the fan speed switch is "off" there should be no power going to the interior blower motor. If the motor continues to run with either of these switches "off" you have a problem. The upper vents should be fully open when the mode switch is in "MAX" & "VENT". If it opens in other positions one of the vacuum lines connected to the mode switch is in the wrong receptacle or you have a defective AC mode switch. Living where it gets very cold, I especially like the cranking capacity (even though it is seldom driven in the winter). Also, because it is fully sealed, I don't have to worry about leakage. You can put it in on it's side, upside down or whatever, and it just keeps functioning. I dont know if i should take all of this seriously, but it sure would be nice if it were the honest truth. BTW I left a message on the Mosler Auto message board asking if Warren Mosler had any involvment on the project and the answer is no.(officially). This was my own speculation that the manucactuer of the consulier, intruder, and raptor may have some interest in this venture considering he is building production cars with 0-60 speeds of under 4 seconds with his newest car and guess what?, it uses a mid engine layout and a monoque body made of special plastics. sounds like JZD's previous stated goals. and knowing Moslers slightly rebellious reputation in the auto and racing industry with very unorthodox automobiles, one can only suspect that he may have some compassion or at least an idea of JZD's dreams. However Warren Mosler is highly respected in the world of finance and economics, delorean is not. My point is that both men have the ambition and drive to make similar cars, Mosler has the capital and facilities however to make this happen. And if this is not the case, and John Z. In any case, your VIN was among the last '81 models built. November '81 builds started at about #6000 and went to something a little over #7000. The '82 models started at about #10000 in December '81. There were a LOT less '82's built than '81's, and even fewer '83's. The company went into receivership in February 1982 and the factory was closed in October 1982. It's my understanding that the '83's were actually '82 models (about 1000 I think) that were still at the factory when it was seized and shut down by the British government. These 82's were later titled as '83's. I believe there were a few that were titled as even later models. BTW, the first '81's were prematurely rushed to market under pressure from the press and JZD. Unfortunately these early models were fraught with problems. That's why the QAC's were established in the first place. The first 81's were built in December 1980. By November 1981 most of the early production problems had been corrected so consider yourself fortunate to have a "later" model. Essentially you would be electrically grounding any signal "received" by your "door antenna". An antenna is an "open ended" wire that is insulated from any other metal part of the car. The broadcast signal is picked up by this insulated wire and fed directly to the receiver circuits of the radio without touching anything else. When a power antenna is retracted it is shielded nearly 100% by the metal tube it retracts into, and by the metal fender as well. A manual antenna that retracts typically does not retract into a metal tube but rather retracts into itself and will generally pick up some signal when fully retracted. The higher the octane rating, the less volitale the fuel. That means higher octane fuels don't light off as quickly nor as hot as lower octane fuels. That is why they resist pre-ignition or pinging. If an engine is designed to run on low octane fuel and is fed a diet of high octane fuel it can, in a sense, become dependent on high octane. The reason is the lower combustion temps resulting from high octane ratings can, in time, produce carbon deposits in the combustion chamber which raise the compression ratio. At some point the compression ratio gets high enough to mandate high octane fuel to prevent the pre-ignition. The point here is nothing is gained using high octane fuel in a low compression engine. The DeLorean shop manual recomends 91 octane fuel with a compression ratio of 8.8:1.
