You might find a nice specimen for sale there or if you find one in the So. Cal. area that you like take it to Don for a pre purchase inspection. It would be worth your time and money to have it checked out before you buy it. Better safe than sorry and the car is much more enjoyable when it functions properly. It's also more fun to show off that way and that's why some of us bought one in the first place! Good luck on your search. From a happy owner. Well, i would just like to know any > chronic problems with the cars, and what to look for and watch out > for. Thanks for any help! Seriously, the best thing you can do is read the list. 90% of what I know about the DMC I have learned from the list or list members, and the rest from books and magazine articles. Read the list archives too. There's lots of good stuff in there. The DMC-12 is extremely reliable mechanically. Common things that come to mind include rear trailing arm bolts (they break and the suspension falls apart - check these immediately), the windows falling off the track, air trapped in the cooling system causing overheating, the cooling fan control system failing, problems with the power windows/locks, and miscellaneous 18-year-old-car problems. On automatic transmission equipped cars, the transmission computer fails more than it ought to. There are some idle problems that sometimes occur (usually related to the fuel enrichment system) and some warm start problems (usually related to the diaphragm that maintains fuel system pressure). Sometimes an electrical problem will prevent the ignition from working, but that's one of the less common ones. The electrical system also tends to "leak" power which will drain the battery, and the early cars had alternators which were too small causing electrical problems with all the goodies turned on. You must also check to make sure all the factory recalls have been performed. These are simple, but extremely important as they are safety related. I know one has to do with the throttle cable sticking, but I cannot remember what the other is. At this point most cars do have all the recalls installed, but check to make sure. Later cars have the recalls built in from the factory. The best thing about DeLorean glitches is that 99% of the time, what's happening to you has happened to somebody else before. This means that every single problem I've mentioned has a (usually fairly simple) solution which is readily available. There is no reason a well-maintained DMC in good condition should ever leave you stranded anywhere. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ eGroups.com home: http://www.egroups.com/group/dmcnews http://www.egroups.com - Simplifying group communications ------------------------------ message 767 ------------------------------ http://www.eGroups.com/list/dmcnews/?start=767 X-Mailing-List: dmcnews@egroups.com X-URL: http://www.egroups.com/list/dmcnews/ Mime-Version: 1.0 Date: Sat, 29 May 1999 07:48:08 -0500 From: "time@traveller.com" Subject: [DML] Re: Johnny Lightning DeLorean set Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable We have a complete set of all 10 of the Johnny Lightning DeLorean die-cast cars from "Back to the Future" being auctioned off at eBay, in case anyone is interested in owning the entire set: http://cgi.ebay.com/aw-cgi/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=3D108618351 To Be Continued... Pacific Rim Automotive, run by John Lane, is one of the Pacific Northwest DeLorean Club's approved repair facilities. But even more than that, John is very experienced in building and racing the PRV. He has a ralley car with a 3 litre motor that puts out over 500 ft/lbs of torque! It uses an intercooled single turbo and electronic fuel injection that is totally programmable using a laptop PC. Needless to say this kind of power does not come cheap, but if you are interested, John is eager to apply his knowledge to a DeLorean. I highly recommend his services. Several years ago, with the aid of a top transmission shop, I tried to do that. I even acquired a new original DMC ring and pinion from KAPAC, but the final drive case is just different. You cannot swap in the correct gears or invert the gear ala old VW's. So what we did to use the front wheel drive versions (at the time much less expensive than the DMC version) was to use the new transmission portion, but re-use the customer's DMC final drive section. This is not a difficult task for a trans shop, and results in a "new" trans for less than half the cost of an original DMC. We still have a couple of those available if anyone is interested. One of my future projects is to try the Dodge/Eagle transmission conversion, but it will have to wait for my new shop to get built first.....
