Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit First off I searched the back issues, I found several people including James himself who had a problem similar to this but I couldn't find any posts on any solutions. I have a really annoying brake noise problem. During slow braking or when the brake pedal is partially applied (moving about 1 or 2 mph) the brakes will squeel unbeleivably, the slower I apply the break pedal the more noise it will make. Once it starts making the nosie if you slam down the brakes the noise goes away instantly. This only takes place in the front end, the back end makes no noise. This tends to happen after the car has been running for about 5 or 6 minutes. I had a my friend's father, a mechanic took a look at it for me and removed the pads and sanded them a bit. This made the noise go away for about 3 days but now it's back. This is starting to become embarrasing and I am at the end of my rope with this problem. Now the car is attracting attention for all the wrong reasons. I was in a trendy part of town the other night in heavy traffic and looking for a parking space when all of the sudden the brakes start making the noise. Everybody started looking my way, I started changing color right there as people covered their ears. Needless to say that this problem has outlived my liking and I need it gone quickly. This is also no longer a cost issue for me. You can use an organic pad (if a compatable part is made), but they only last a few thousand miles .. There are some anti-squeel sprays that claim to help, although I doubt it.... The problem, as far as I understand it is, the breaks get very hot and causes the surface of the pad to melt slightly.... giving it a "skin" of sorts that is noisey. You may want to get your brake rotors turned, and/or try a different type of pad.. Maybe just cheap pads do this?? This is consistent with your symptoms. Sanding the pads helps, but they are quickly glazed again because the rotors are glazed as well. You will have to remove the rotors and have them turned at a machine shop or auto parts store that has a brake lathe. (about $10 each) They will check the thickness for you and let you know if you need to buy new ones or if yours can be turned. I don't know the specs for the rotors on the D. You may want to find this out for the shop before you go since it is likely that the D won't be listed in the book. Maybe DMC Joe can give you the numbers. (turn to, discard at, minimun thickness, etc.) All four can generally be turned, but rear rotors always seem to be a problem for some reason. Hope this Helps! Just bought my Delorean (#17089) on = Saturday.
 
Here's one (of the many problems) I'm t= rying to = figure out.
 
We did a full tune up on it - new plugs, rotor & ca= p, oil = change etc...
The car idles fine but as soon as you apply pressure to= the = gas
pedal the car will stall - or run unbelievably = rough.
 
Any ideas?

The trany is made by Renault, You may want to find a cross referance list to see what other vehicles it was used in. It's like getting parts for a Mercury SUV, you'll pay more for the merc price then the same ford SUV part price. If you do this make sure you get the bolt back on TIGHT, it holds the spindle axle on the car. Second best is to disconnect the speedo cable and then you can rotate the drive to a better position to work on. The factory spec lube is 90wt gear oil, but it is usually considered better to use a heavy moly (wheel bearing etc.) lube. Delorean Motor Center (Steger) sells a neat little grease gun for about $20 that will fit the hole on the drive without taking it off the car. There have been rumors (see the archives about 2 years ago) that this causes the engine to run hotter (apparently there is some aerodynamic extraction effect to the louvers), and you will get more rain water running over the engine since it will be even more open. Rub your finger in a circular motion around the top of a drinking glass, you should be able to hear a squealing noise. A different size glass or glass thickness, the amount of oil on your finger, water hardness, even room humidity will effect the pitch. The physical properties regarding brake squeal are the same. New anti squeal shims, turning rotors, changing pads, metalized vs.non metalized pads, anti squeal sprays and goos, even cutting slits in the pads. Amazingly all of these items will work, the problem is you don't know which one will until you try it. Here is what we do. If the pads are worn, we just change them out. We have found that the pads from the DeLorean parts suppliers are less likely to squeal than from the local auto stores. We have also found that Permatex Disc Brake Quiet really works. The factory installed release cable on my D (# 5830) is multi-strand, but that may not be the case for all D's. It is a very simple process to install an emergency backup release cable. All you need to do is get a piece of multi-strand cable approximatelt 24" long. Loop one end around the release arm (where the regular cable is connected; take the other end and loop it around one of the bolts next to the gas filler cap (I suggest the one closest to the windshield). Both of these ends should should have a crimped connector to keep the loops intact. If your regular cable ever fails, simply reach your right hand under the trailing edge of the hood just inboard of the gas cap; grab the cable with all four fingers and pull it sharply toward the left side of the car, while lifting the hood with your left hand. I have had this on my D for many years and it works great. As a matter of fact, I rarely use the inside release, as my backup cable is more conveient to use. As for trunk security, the cable is out of sight and you would have to know how to use it. As for the recommended length of the cable, play with that a little bit until you find one that works for you.
