Yes, the white fuseholder is someone's workaround for the melted fuse.
I believe this is the fuel pump fuse AND something else, my books are at
home. This brings up a common maintenance tip that is worth repeating.
It is a good idea to routinely take all of the fuses and relays out
(one at a time!!) and clean the sockets with a small burnishing tool,
and clean the fuse/relay contacts with emory cloth, or better yet just
replace the fuses - they're cheap. Depending on your climate, every year
or two should be plenty. Corrosion of the contacts causes high reistance,
which is why the fuse will heat up and melt but not blow. The current
is within ratings, but the high resistance heats everything up. I'm not
sure why but the top center fuse seems to always be the first to go. It
must be run at pretty close to 20 amps, where most fuses are more over-rated
than that.

For the most part, I agree with not painting and modifying a rare vehicle
like the Delorean, but there are other factors to be considered. Since the
production life of the D was so short, everyone recognized the collectability
early and relativey few were customized. We therefore were denied the
experience of seeing the true potential of the car at the hands of creative
and talented enthusiasts. Also I believe that the fact that the cars showed
no individuality (no options to really set their D apart from others),
something preferred by Americans in their automobiles, was a significant
factor in the low sales numbers. (Wasn't there a fender or something found
in the Delorean factory where they were testing paints? Hmmm. Sounds like
they knew it too.) I am in no way saying that everyone should run out and
paint their Delorean. If you're among the lucky ones to have a perfect body,
then count yourself lucky, take care of your car and preserve the history.
But for those who have purchased previously painted ones, or have some body
damage and dont want to or can't afford to replace the panels, go ahead and
express yourself! The guys with the perfect cars pretty much have their
hands tied, but you have a clean slate! In my opinion, the Delorean has a
tremendous amount of character on which to build. Be wild or be mild, but
please be tasteful. ( I think we've all seen at least one good example of
what happens when you strap everything from K-Mart's automotive department
onto a Delorean and it wasn't pretty.) So keep up the customizations and
modernizations!
Purist or Painter? There's room for us both!
And to the guy who started the painted Delorean site: Keep it up! I'll send
you photos when mine's ready!
(The D I'm building should hit the road next summer and it will be both
customized and modernized...tastefully.)

The owners manual has a diagram of the fuses. You need to identify what that
melted fuse is first. Then you can better diagnose your problem.

Krylon semi-flat black spray paint will return all of those parts back to
there factory finish. The paint will also eliminate the need for constant
applications of Armor All type products.

Check out a unit for an 84 corvette. We don't have any direct experience
with this unit but our crossover database indicates that it fits. I assume
that your VIN is prior to 3468.

Sam,
Your driver side problem may be related to a bad window switch. Exchange
the switches and see what happens. If there is still no response than you
probably have a defective motor. There rarely are problems with the window
control wiring but to be sure you will have to go inside the door to be
sure there is proper connections to the motor.
All the factory specification window moldings and seals are available from
DeLorean parts suppliers.

Hey everyone, I have a few questions on my windows. First, the drivers
side window does not move at all, not even the motor when I hit the switch.
Occasionally it will briefly make a noise when I tap the switch, but
that's it. That leads me to think it's a wiring problem somewhere. Is
there a common problem with the windows? That might at least give me a
starting point. Also, the passenger side window motor moves but the window
is free (Must be off the track).
My second question is about the rubber on the outside of the door that
outlines the window and along the bottom of the glass. On my D it is
slightly worn in some places. I'd like to replace it to give it that new
look...what can I use to replace that with?
Any suggestions/comments appreciated!

Thanks for the reply. It is difficult to see the details on the web site.
Since your car came from factory as new and painted, then without doubt it is
officially a factory authorized painted DeLorean. This would make it as an
"acceptable" painted car by everyone that are involved with the DeLorean
marque. No contest at all.
Incidentally, yes, I know that they had paints back in the 1980s and even
earlier. These paints can adhere to stainless steel and aluminum, fiberglass
and etc. One of these paints used in the early 80s was from DuPont. It was
called Imron. It is an epoxy two, if not three part paint. I myself, like
many others, we don't like the "finish" or its characteristic or its working
properties. Its finish was not as good as the regular paints available. We
avoid recommending it back then. Under desperate conditions and demands, we
used it. It was okay It did what it was formulated to do, to "Stick or
Adhere" to difficult materials with avoidance to premature fading, cracking,
flaking and peeling under adverse conditions. The majority of this epoxy
paint is used on aircrafts, to adhere to the aircraft's aluminum surfaces.
The next time you board a commercial airliner, look at the paint that is on
the aircraft. Do you like the finish????????? Imron is also used within the
automotive and the boating industry. If a car's surface is poorly "prep" or
the wrong or poor quality painted is used.........I would like to see the
results as time passes. If the car "sits" in a "closed or controlled
environment" then one needs not worry about these adverse conditions or the
effects.
If the car is on the road as a daily driven car.......be concerned about
these facts.
I know the DMC would take the ultra care, the "correct" procedures and the
best materials to assure the highest quality that can be obtained when they
produce a painted car. If they had If they couldn't do it, then no other
non-equipped facility can! Remember their name and reputation now resides
with the car. If I know how some of these car companies operates. They
would invest more time and money to get it "right," even at a financial lost
(they would most likely charge the customer-owner anyway).
Many DMLer have been talking about getting their cars painted. Has anyone
check the "cost" and the "time" involved in painting a DeLorean or any
stainless steel or "all" aluminum body motor car? Hint: If the cost or
estimate is lower then painting a standard steel motorcar, continue
searching. If they boast about their great work, ask for some finished
motorcars that they can give reference to. I know they have improved the
paint, but the workmanship and their "know how" is still in question. Ask
about their quality assurance -- their warrantee against workmanship and
against premature material failures. Unless you want to waiver your rights
and overlook the warrantee. For the money to be spent???
Dan, in either case your factory painted DeLorean as with several others out
there, should be valued higher, when it comes to a collector's car. It is
the same, but different. Enjoy it.

This is not totally uncommon, we have seen it happen before. The easiest
fix is to drill out the existing stud and replace it with a nut and bolt.

Good detective work ! The fuel pump fuse melt down is a common problem
which is corrected with a by-pass "in line fuse". The problem is that this
circuit carries high current and requires a heavy duty fuse holder, many
owners and repair shops have used a standard holder. The fix is easy. Go to
your local Radio Shack or auto parts store and purchase a "heavy duty" in
line fuse holder. When installing the new unit be sure that your
connections are tight and secure.

Hi every one,
Well it's registration time again for my D hear in California Home of the
Emission
control freaks!!!
While this subject is not dealt with much hear on the list, I thought that
as I just went threw the smog testing it would be worth a comment or two.
The standards hear in California are very high requiring that auto
emissions be below certain limits. For instance the following levels are
the maximum allowed:
2500rpm:
HC PPM 0150
CO% 1.50
CO2 21.50
02 9.90
When I took my D in for the test, it has run for a year with out an
official tune up, and had just air cleaner and oil changes, no plug gapping
or replacements, no point cleaning - nothing. It passed easily with the
following results.
2680rpm
HC PPM 0016
CO% .15
CO2 11.90
02 3.90
IDLE@0868rpm 02 1.30
The whole point is our D's are one of the cleanest running cars on the road
even after 18 years. Kinda of nice to know that at least here in California
the smog monsters are not a
source of grief to us D persons.

Does anyone know how to reinstall the front coil spring on the DeLorean? I
had to remove the spring because I am in the process of performing a
complete restoration of the car. My problem is that I can not compress the
spring enough to get it to fit in between the shock tower and the lower
control arm.
Another question: Does anyone know where I can get a DeLorean sports bra
for the front end? I mean the one that actually has DMC embroidered in the
middle of the bra?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

My family and I returned yesterday from the Townsend TN show. It was a lot
of fun and myself and my family really enjoyed ourselves. The town of
Townsend is located near the entrance to the Great Smokey Mountains National
Park and is absolutely beautiful. The British Car Gathering had 150+
vehicles from the very rare ALVIS an Aston Martin, Rileys, MG's, Triumphs,
Austin Mini's, Austin Heley, Moch, Jaguar's, Tigers and of course 5
DeLoreans. The judging was by peoples choice, so all of the paying
customers (those of us who entered) got to vote for the car that we liked
the best in each category.
The BBQ after the show was great. There were many door prizes, I think
everyone got something, and the prizes were good stuff.
I would like to thank Bruce Battles for inviting the DeLorean owners to this
show. Bruce and his family were wonderful hosts and we plan to attend this
show again next year.

Only a couple of weeks ago, this same thing happened to me. I called PJ
Grady for help. They informed me that these hinges do not exist new any
more. What I did was order a repaired hinge from PJG and once it arrived, I
shipped out the damaged one to him for a partial refund on the "core
charge." I think that the final cost to me was 35 dollars. He will also
give you some advise on reattaching the "new" hinge in order to not break it
too.

Hi Brad,
I had the same problem described below. The socket for fuse #7 (top center)
was melting. This fuse controls the Labmda unit. In my case, fixing the
fuse also fixed a nasty idling problem that I was having - one so bad that
my De Lorean kept dying on me. One way to fix your problem is to work
around the melted area, adding a fuse in new wiring (which sounds like what
was done to your car).
Cleaning the fuse contacts to remove corrosion, which will reduce heat
buildup...hopefully prolonging the life of the fusebox.

I've been reading this newsletter for some time now, this is my first
response. I think that as owners of Deloreans, we are fortunate to be part
of a special group of people. Whether it is because we like cars in general
or have a special liking for Deloreans. I am lucky enough to own a number
of cars including a couple of Deloreans (one painted and one "au-natural").
I've received both positive comments and negative comments on both cars.
The painted one gets the most attention. The unpainted one has been called
everything from a time machine to a kitchen sink w/wheels. Personally, I
like the painted car. I think the color really enhances the body lines and
brightens up the whole package. But more to the point, WHO CARES! We
Deloreanites are an exclusive group that is either interested in, or owns
Deloreans!!!! To not consider a painted car is fine if that is what you
prefer. It seems a little narrow of mind to me, but that's your choice.
Just by the fact that a "D" is painted, doesn't necessarily make it "less"
of a Delorean. I know that there are a lot of "bondo" jobs out there, but
isn't that possible on any make? It takes a lot of work to paint a "D" and
have it come out looking good. Mine is another of those "painted by the
dealer" cars, no records, no proof, no way to know, just hand-me-down
owner's stories. The car is an undamaged, well maintained car, that gets
alot of attention. That's all that matters. If we were truly interested in
"investment" value, I don't think this car would be an investor's top
choice. The prices in the last 7-8 years seems to have been pretty stable.
At least we aren't losing money! Anyway, let's not execute anyone just yet!
Let's just enjoy the fact that we all like this type of car and are
individual enough to have our own tastes. Aren't sports cars supposed to be
"red" anyways? Jeff.

I am looking to buy a Delorean, and I wondered what would be better. Buying a run-down one and having it restored at 'Delorean Motor Co' or something like that, or would it be better to just find a decent running one. I'd like to know what some people think on this

poorly
so I am redoing the the body over,but the cars look great painted,kinda makes

parts car,because of the expense of replacing a SS panel.Too bad nobody makes
fiberglass replacement panels,Because I would be willing to swap all my SS

Yokohoma AVS Intermediate tires (all 4) for my Delorean a month ago for
$360. I got them through my mechanic who had a deal with the store

gotten them for $410. Still, much less then the prices I have seen on

Just to let you know... I just bought a set of 4 Yokohama AVS Intermediates for my DeLorean about 3 weeks ago from the The Tire Rack. In stock, and only $348.00 for all 4 including shipping by UPS ground to my house. I live fairly near (about 250 miles), so shipping may be more for some people. They also have lists of tire shops all around the country who will mount and balance them for the usual fees if you don't know of anyone.

page -- real big, at the top it reads:

DeLorean once made a stainless steel car with signature gull-wing
doors, but he fell from prominence after legal entanglements in the
1980s, including bankruptcy, divorce, and an acquittal on cocaine
smuggling charges.
"I don't look back at all," said DeLorean, whose latest project is a
1,450-pound sports car built from structural plastic that can go from
zero to 60 miles per hour in 3.2 seconds.
The starting price would be about $18,000.
"Cars are in my blood," he said.
"They're really the only thing I've ever worked at."
DeLorean, 74, once spent a lot of time at his 48-acre citrus and
avocado ranch in San Diego County, but he gave it to his attorneys to
pay legal fees. He now splits his time between Bedminster, Somerset
County, and New York City.

Dan's car is DEALER painted, not factory painted. DMC did not paint any
cars. Just for the record, I think stainless steel cars look better.... When
the cars first came out the idea of stainless steel was new. So - they painted
them... To paint a DeLorean TODAY, in my opinion ruins the collector value of the
car. However, I've seen Dan's car in person and it does look neat, I just perfer
the stainless-steel. The Stainless Steel is one of the things that make the
DeLorean so unique. Think before painting your DeLorean......

The reason I discovered the following problem, was that I removed the roof
T-Panel in order to try and prevent my doors from touching it. I still
have not corrected this problem, but have been told that it is normal for
the rear corners of the doors to slightly touch the inside corners of the
roof T-Panel, and that a lot of cars came from the factory that way.

On this topic, I thought I'd bring up a problem that I had with my Delorean.
This has been mentioned by Bob Brandys before, you can find it in the back
issues. I was very surprised to find that the above mentioned steel section
was rusting rather badly inside. Especially since my Delorean #17117 was at
about only 10,000 miles and had been garaged and supposedly never driven in
the rain! The only mention of this problem I could find in the back issues
was Bob Brandys' account. He stated that he fabricated a stainless steel
replacement.
I consulted Rob Grady, who stated that he usually re-sealed the cavity and
sprayed body wax inside after removing most of the loose rust using
compressed air and a magnet. Since I did not yet have any appearent
structural damage, this is what I did. (I finally had to order the body
wax as most of the people I spoke to here in Florida didn't even know what
it was)
Appearently my main problem was that the factory did a very poor job of
sealing this cavity, there was very little RTV on the wirelooms running to
the doors, and none of it was in the right place... There are also screw
holes in the steel section for an access panel that never existed, mine
weren't sealed in anyway, thus allowing water into the roof easily.
I'd be interested in hearing other people's comments on this problem,
perhaps other more permanant solutions. (I do plan to replace this
section as Bob Brandys did if I ever find myself removing my doors)

If you want one to drive, then find one in good shape. If you want one to
restore, find one that's broken. Fixing one up will cost you more,
especially if you have it done rather than doing it yourself. There are
enough DeLoreans around that you can find a good one - look on the
dmcnews.com classifieds, for starters.
If you want to extensively customize the car (paint, new engine, whatever)
then you are better off buying one that has problems in the area you want
to modify. That will probably save you money, and leave more "original"
ones for the people that want them.

I read an article in the newspaper today that says John Delorean is working
on the new automobile.
Does anyone know how far along he is in the process?

I f you want to buy a DeLorean, I would highly suggest buying the very best
car that you can afford. Doing this is almost always more economical (in the
end) than restoring a wreck. This also means that you can enjoy the car right
away as opposed to waiting for work to be done. There are excellent cars out
there at a fair price, but you must be willing to travel to look at good
leads.

what can i say?
Buy the best you can afford, I got stung bad 12k sterling and have since
spent around 5k on every bit of rubber and anything you cant see from the
outside
that makes my car about 17k sterling or 25k dollars and to be honest I would
never put it in a show!!

I switched the window switches - same result. However, once in a while I'll
hit the switch and the motor will move a little. I removed the front orange
door-up light and tapped the motor with a screwdriver and then hit the
switch. The motor moved briefly but quickly stopped. I'm thinking maybe a
bad celanoid?

Aaron, that looks like a normal shifter to me. Fifth is in the "right
and up" position while *reverse* is in the "left and down" position.
This would only be a six speed if there is another selection above the
"left and down" position. The picture is taken at the wrong angle to
reveal this.
This is just a run-of-the mill DeLorean shifter.

Speaking of painted D's hear is another great parking lot D story!
This actually happened just two weeks ago!
While loading groceries into my D parked under a shade tree in the store lot
a man cam up and started telling me about his fail limmo business in
Australia and the fact
that he had owned an original delorean. He noted that I had painted the
front and rear bumpers.
He was very proud of the fact that he had not painted his "stainless"
bumpers. He went on
to tell me about the first original turbo charged Hemi-head V-8 engine in
his D and that it was a shame that JZD's financial problems forced him to
replace the V-8's with ford 4 cylinder engines. In spite of my assurances
that DeLoreans never had stainless Facia or V-8's he insisted that he had
owned such a car and even offered me a kindness by suggesting I would feel
better about my D if I did some home work to learn more about the car and
it's history.
He also offered as I got in and closed the door that I should have my D
inspected because there were known weakness in the "tube steel frame"!
I just love my D and all that it brings!

Thanks for the correction.
The question NOW, is whether Dan's DeLorean car is acceptable as an "original
painted" car with all who associates with the DeLorean marque.
Why? Was Dan's DeLorean painted "prior" to delivery? Was it ordered or
requested by the original owner and the work performed by the DeLorean's
dealership? If it was, the this car should now be considered as an "official
and authorized" because it was done by the DeLorean's dealership.
The bill of sales from the dealership should reflect this as paint job as an
"option" during the sale and before delivery of the car. If the this option
is documented on the original bill of sales as an option, wouldn't this make
this as an "official painted car"? So, now what is the standard as being
official?
Many of these "unusual requests" as "options" has always been a debate with
other marques as well. They are NON FACTORY options, but the dealerships all
do it to satisfy the customer and their sales.
Well, what is your opinion? This has always been an interesting topic.

Below is a brief outline of an upcoming show here in NJ. I contacted one of
the organizers of the show. She informed me that DeLoreans are welcome and
that if there is enough of any one make or model they will be given their own
class. It is a first annual show I believe and it sounds from the
description I was given that it should be a great show to attend. I know
myself and some other members of DeLorean Mid Atlantic are making plans to
attend. Hope to see some other DeLorean owners and enthusiasts from the

Different Strokes for different folks! I've got a stainless "D" and a Blue "D"
if I had to give one of them up, I'd say bye bye Blue. Don't get me wrong, I
love the car but there's nothing like a nice shinny stainless "D" cruising
down the road. If I get a scratch on the Blue "D" I'm SOL, but if I get one on
the stainless "D" I go to Kroger and get a Scotch Brite pad & six pack.As far
as catching attention, it's the Blue "D" all the way. Plus when I go to
Cleveland next year I'll be able to find the Blue "D" in a parking lot full of
stainless.Six in one, half dozen in another. I say just get what you like.

Sam,
The problem is 1. In the switch (as Joe said), 2. wiring between switch and
motor, 3. Or it maybe that the window track is not lubed enough. I had this
problem once. I would hit window switch and see voltage drop on dash but no
window movement. Took panels off the door and lubed window track volia the
window went up and down perfectly. (Note I had already swapped switches from
drivers side to pass side.)Before lubing I was ready to buy a new window
motor. This might not work in your case but do try all steps (switches, test
for current in wires, and lube the window track). Good luck. By the way
search back issues to find correct way to take door apart (if needed). Its
not hard if done right. Its a nightmare to just remove stuff and try and
figure out how it all works when reassembling.

Roof cage rusting is extremely rare, in 14 years we have only seen two cars
with this problem. As you had mentioned it looks as if your roof was not

JZD has been trying to start a new car company ever since DMC closed down.
While I would be first in line to buy a car like that, I don't think it
will ever be built. First, these things have been rumored in the papers

know of. While JZD could probably design the car all by himself (I mean,

requisite suspension, braking, chassis, etc. to stand up to it into a
1,500 pound car. That's Indy-car territory, and those cost a million
dollars. The only street car accomplishing anything like this is the
McLaren, and they cost a million dollars, too. If it happens for $18,000,
or $38,000, I'll buy one, but I don't think it could be done for less than
ten times that, maybe a hundred times. Lotus has built some cars of that
weight, but they cost a fortune, and have less power than JZD wants in his
new car.
Consider what happened with the DMC-12, it was going to be a 2,200 pound
car faster than the Corvette for half the price. It turned out to be a
2,750 pound car, considerably slower than the Corvette, and cost more.
If the same thing happens to the car he's trying to build, well, it'll
still be a good car, in a market currently occupied only by Mazda's
excellent Miata, but it won't be everything it's supposed to be. Concept
cars rarely are, when they're actually produced.
On the other hand, he could buy a Geo Metro and drop, say, a 300-HP Mazda
rotary engine in it. Total cost, about $18,000, plenty fast, weighing in
at just about exactly 2,000 pounds. :} It is possible to build extremely
light, cheap cars, but you might not like what you get when you're done.
:} Something would have to be done about the styling, of course. I wonder
how much it would cost to convert one of those for gull-wing doors? :}

The original motors had drive gears that will occasionally crack, when you
push the button or shock the motor the gear will turn a small amount and
than jam. The only fix is to replace the entire regulator with the greatly
improved replacement units from one of the DeLorean part suppliers.

as catching attention, it's the Blue "D" all the way. Plus when I go to
Cleveland next year I'll be able to find the Blue "D" in a parking lot full

stainless.Six in one, half dozen in another. I say just get what you like.

That's an interesting topic of discussion Kayo. All I can do is be judged b=
y the community regarding my car. All I can add is that when I bought my ca=
r, the title said black. So, I'm assuming it was painted prior to delivery.=

Ralph,
We have installed hundreds of struts and have extensive experience with the
door mechanics. One of the characteristic of different brands of struts is
their "damping factor". i.e.: the strut slows the speed of the opening
action just before the strut goes to its maximum extension. This prevents
damage to the lower lift brackets. We have found that re-charged struts
have little or no damping factor.

Since your car came from factory as new and painted, then without doubt it =
is =
officially a factory authorized painted DeLorean. This would make it as an=

"acceptable" painted car by everyone that are involved with the DeLorean =
marque. No contest at all. =
Incidentally, yes, I know that they had paints back in the 1980s and even =
earlier. These paints can adhere to stainless steel and aluminum, fiberglas=
s =
and etc. One of these paints used in the early 80s was from DuPont. It wa=
s =
called Imron. It is an epoxy two, if not three part paint. I myself, like =
many others, we don't like the "finish" or its characteristic or its workin=
g =
properties. Its finish was not as good as the regular paints available. We=
=
avoid recommending it back then. Under desperate conditions and demands, w=
e =
used it. It was okay It did what it was formulated to do, to "Stick or =
Adhere" to difficult materials with avoidance to premature fading, cracking=
, =
flaking and peeling under adverse conditions. The majority of this epoxy =
paint is used on aircrafts, to adhere to the aircraft's aluminum surfaces. =
=
The next time you board a commercial airliner, look at the paint that is on=
=
the aircraft. Do you like the finish????????? Imron is also used within t=
he =
automotive and the boating industry. If a car's surface is poorly "prep" o=
r =
the wrong or poor quality painted is used.........I would like to see the =
results as time passes. If the car "sits" in a "closed or controlled =
environment" then one needs not worry about these adverse conditions or the=
=
effects.
If the car is on the road as a daily driven car.......be concerned about =
these facts.
I know the DMC would take the ultra care, the "correct" procedures and the =
best materials to assure the highest quality that can be obtained when they=
=
produce a painted car. If they had If they couldn't do it, then no other =
non-equipped facility can! Remember their name and reputation now resides =
with the car. If I know how some of these car companies operates. They =
would invest more time and money to get it "right," even at a financial los=
t =
(they would most likely charge the customer-owner anyway).
Many DMLer have been talking about getting their cars painted. Has anyone =
check the "cost" and the "time" involved in painting a DeLorean or any =
stainless steel or "all" aluminum body motor car? Hint: If the cost or =
estimate is lower then painting a standard steel motorcar, continue =
searching. If they boast about their great work, ask for some finished =
motorcars that they can give reference to. I know they have improved the =
paint, but the workmanship and their "know how" is still in question. Ask =
about their quality assurance -- their warrantee against workmanship and =
against premature material failures. Unless you want to waiver your rights=
=
and overlook the warrantee. For the money to be spent???
Dan, in either case your factory painted DeLorean as with several others ou=

there, should be valued higher, when it comes to a collector's car. It is =
the same, but different. Enjoy it.

posting them to the site! So far the cars on the site are overwhelmingly

You have my sympathy. This can be a very difficult situation,
especially if a passenger of the fairer sex is trapped in your
DeLorean! You probably need to get inside the door and adjust the
linkages.
With luck, your problem might be that either the lock linkage or the
latch linkage has worked its way to a marginal area where they no longer
reach far enough to do their job reliably. You might be able to coax
them by pushing the inside lock rocker hard, pulling up on the door
handle, and rapping the lower part of the door with your fist. It might
also help to have someone outside pulling up on the bottom of the door
(not the handle).
If this does not work, then you need to get at the door's inner
mechanism with the door closed. It is not easy to remove those panels
while the door is closed! The previous owner of my car did it, and
damaged soft foam material around both inner door handles in the
process. The upside of this unfortunate event is that on my car it is
fairly easy to get inside my doors when I need to.
Unfortunately, to get at the mechanism in question you must remove the
BOTTOM inner door panel, which is the trickier of the two. Both panels
are held in place by rivets and nylon christmas tree clips, but the
bottom panel is also held in by that foam around the pull handle.
A few questions:
Does your car have door guides? Some early DeLoreans, like mine, did
not. If you don't have door guides you might have a damaged latch
mechanism, which could make opening that door difficult even if you
access the inner mechanism. Can you tell if the door is held closed by
just one latch or both? This will tell you which linkage(s) need to be
adjusted.
I just replaced a latch yesterday (damaged by 18 years without guides),
and now both of my doors are fully functional. But tonight I will be
getting inside and fine tuning the linkages, which have slipped a little
bit over the years.

My DeLorean was built in May of 1981, which means that this month is its
18th birthday. In many states that makes her old enough to date men.
It would be fun to hold a Coming Out Party for my DeLorean, but if I did
my wife would surely have me psychoanalyzed if not committed. So I will
confine myself to quietly sharing with my DML friends that, for me at
least, this is a noteworthy occasion.
Does anyone else with an '81 or early '82 DeLorean want to get together
for a few drinks in Saint Louis this October? We'll call it a Debutante
Ball. If your car shows up without a chaperon I won't be responsible
for whatever happens to her. :-)

Yes, my roof was not even close to being sealed, perhaps because my car was
made close to the end. I've sealed the wire looms, access hatch, and screw
holes around the access hatch. The door hinges were aready sealed. Is
there anything else that should be sealed? What about the section
perpendicular to the roof cage, should I be worried about that?
I'd also like to know if my doors really are supposed to slightly touch the
T-panel when opened or if they need to be adjusted.

I think you are probably confused. The Tucker Corporation offered a
special set of luggage for the unusually shaped Tucker trunk, and so did
Mercedes for its 300 SL Gullwing coupe.
This would be a great aftermarket product for an enterprising DMLer,
though. I would love to buy a set of special luggage for my DeLorean.
In case anyone cares, I think the wedge-shaped toolboxes that a few of
us use as DeLorean luggage (Tuff Case) is no longer available. Ssee
