Being the owner of Deloreans and Bricklins I find that the Bricklins are
less
likely to breakdowns and a much easier car to drive and mechanically parts
are very easy to locate (1975 Ford 351ci)but the Deloreans are superior in
fit and trim appearance, and better grade materials, and the fact that only 75
Bricklins were made with 4 speeds and only in 1974(360ci amc motor)but the
Bricklin being built as a SV-1(Safety Vehicle Model 0ne)has it over the
Delorean if you should get in a serious accident, overall I would rate both
cars as very nice cars to own, also both cars came without paint, the Bricklin
had acrylic bonded to the Fiberglass.
Also did anybody realize John Z. Delorean cannot go back to Ireland because
there is a arrest warrant for him.

i think this is another "brilliant safety feature!" less distractions, i
guess. also, bricklins had a cool feature where you could not turn on the
car until your (the driver's) seat belt was on. of course, one can bypass
this easily - as many members of the bricklin mailing list have noted.

if you like bricks, definately join the list! it doesn't even come close
to getting as much traffic as this list, but it's fun and i'm on it even
thought i don't own a brick (or a D for that matter!) bricks are cool,
though, there's a white one here in tucson, and i've gotten to sit in it!

Just my 2 cents worth. While working in Ohio, my business dealt with a
wheel company called Transwheel (I am not sure of their number, but it is
800 so just call 1-800-555-1212 for number). Anyway, they refinished my
wheels in my "D" with great care. They said it usually costs about $90.00
per wheel to refinish them with a turnaround of about a week. They had mine
in 3 days but I was working with them.

Uh, sorry... that is wrong. Aluminum can be chromed. It is done all the tim=

there that are chromed... and they ARE chromed. Any aluminum wheel can be c=
hromed, but it has to be polished first. I've seen aluminum motorcycle whee=
ls, with my own eyes, chromed. It's expensive, but it can be done. Anything=
aluminum can be chromed. If you want your wheels chromed, check the wheel =
and tire sections in your "Want Ad" used car magazine listings. They will c=
hrome your wheels for you. You might also be able to find a company listen =
in Hemmings Motor News. Good luck. ---Dan

What are the other differences between the prototype and the regular D. =
Seems like even in the rotten state of the car, that to have a prototype =
for 14 K would be quite a steal. How many prototypes were there? It =
would be nice to see the owner of that give us some pics. If I did not =
have a D already, I'd snap that one up, even if it needed 7-8K of work =
to get it into decent shape.

Hey there!

I know it's been posted before but does anyone know a website where I could order/find the DeLorean True Type Font?

I'm a freshman at Virginia Tech majoring in Industrial Design. I'm doing my final project on the history and technology of the DeLorean. It'd be great if I could use the font in my presentation.

Thanks!

Like many enthusiasts, I enjoy hunting for pictures of DeLoreans on the
internet -- especially painted ones, because they are so uncommon. I've
seen a few dozen pics of red DeLoreans, five or six pics of green ones, and
even a couple of white ones.

I don't know about you, but I've only seen two pics of black DeLoreans, and
only one pic of a yellow DeLorean. I love stainless steel DeLoreans, but I
happen to think the cars look great in colors, as well. I've been on this
list since early '96, and have never seen a webpage that collected pics of
painted DeLoreans.

Do any of you have pics of black, yellow, or any other color DeLoreans that
you could share with the rest of us? If you do, please post the URL, or
e-mail them to me -- with the photograph-owner's permission, I'll set up a
"Painted DMCs Only" webpage to share them with everyone!

Thanks in advance,
Brian Henderlong

The fact that the problem is worse in cold weather would emply that the
problem is the strut as the gas is not expanding as much as it should in the
coldweather and many years has reduced the level
( I had the same thing) I got new sruts from Delorean1 and although quite
expensive were as perfect as you would expect ,however afterwards I came
across an advert for a company that re fills the gas in them for around a
tenth of the cost so try and look down that street first.

Seems like even in the rotten state of the car, that to have a prototype
for 14 K would be quite a steal. How many prototypes were there? It would
be nice to see the owner of that give us some pics. If I did not have a D
already, I'd snap that one up, even if it needed 7-8K of work to get it
into decent shape.
<

There is a reason this car is only $14,000. I would guess that 7-8k
wouldn't
come close to putting the car into good condition. Everything on the car
would require enormous research to find a replacement or have to be
custom made. Any missing or broken glass or interior trim pieces
will be expensive to replace.

David,

As well as I remember from "Stainless Steel Illusion" the windows were one
of the main differences between the prototypes and the production models.
Also, one of the prototypes had a Citroen 4 cylinder engine. The second
prototype had the PRV. There were only two prototypes. I want to say that
they had different style knee padding and had tan interiors.

There are several pictures of them in "Stainless Steel Illusion."

Body panels on the proto appeared more rounded at edges...not sharp like
production cars... an indication that they were hand produced. Also the sign=

on the car indicated that there are velcro tabs on front to interchange
alternate front grill panels for test purposes. Front and rear facia were
painted bright silver almost as if they were trying to match the stainless.
The tailights looked handmade but had the appearance of production lenses.
Interior appeared almost stock...even had switches for power windows
(although
the car itself had sliding plastic). The rear louvre was missing struts. On
the whole it looked like everything else was there. No cracks on binnacle or=

dash that I could see.

About a week ago I had the unique opprotunity to sit in the #2 prototype and
take photographs (although they turned out somewhat dark) I am planning on
posting all of these pictures noting all of the differences. James actually
has a very nice page on the prorotype right here on the dmcnews website. Just
scroll down a bit and you will see a link.

Just a thought :-)

Claude, its true there is a warrant for John DeLoreans arrest here in
Ireland, but that does not mean he did anything wrong - all it means is that
they think they have something on him and would like to ask him to explain
it...again

In the TV interview with him, produced by Robert Lamrock, John was asked by
the interviewer why he thought there was a warrant for his arrest in
Ireland. He explained that he has already been acquitted of this charge on 3
separate occasions, and since he knows he did nothing wrong, he can't
understand the arrest warrant. He also said he feels that there is no
justice in Northern Ireland, and he pointed out what happened to the
Bermingham 6 & Guilford 4 (people imprisoned and abused for crimes they did
not commit). He has a point you know. Why should he come to Ireland, and
risk spending years in jail for something he says (and I believe him) he did
not do, when his time would be much better spent working on his new car?

I think its a huge pity the way things turned out for him in Ireland, I'd
love for him to visit me here sometime and I'd show him around, but
unfortunately that isn't going to happen....but anyway just remember, he
never did anything wrong, and imho he definately doesn't deserve that arrest
warrant.

anyway, thats what I think about the "arrest warrant" - ridiculous!
I feel better having got that off my chest!

Best Wishes,
John Dore, Ireland.

I am in the process of installing a windshield in my D when I took note of
just how thin the A pillar and windshield frame were and how little support
this part has. I was wondering if anyone knows if there's any metal
reinforcement inside the fiberglass or is it just the 'glass? Just curious.

Ok possible dumb question coming so bear with me...

As with any thing that sits out for a while in the sun, alot of the outer trim including mirrors, louvers, around the door locks, bumpers, and front windshield are faded. Now the question is how to get them looking like new. Armor All only does so much and rinses off in the rain. Is there something I can put on to restore them or should I just paint them... The Northern California DeLorean Motor Club (NCDMC) will be having its
first gathering of the year this Sunday:

Sunday morning May 2nd at 9:30AM
El Torito restaurant
1961 Diamond Blvd
Concord	(925) 798-7660

The El Torito is located in the Willows Shopping Center off of Willow
Pass Road at Highway 680. You can see it from the freeway on the east
side of the highway.

We'll be discussing activities for the club, such as road trips to
scenic locations, overnighters to the coast and Lake Tahoe, trips to the
wine country and car shows in our area. As a reward for attending, I
have a piece of original DeLorean memorabilia for every owner. E-mail me
if you can come. I'll need to let the restaurant know about how many
people will be coming. I'll make the reservation to seat us at 9:30 when
the restaurant opens, so please be prompt.

Come on out even if you can't bring your car. We'll start with
breakfast/brunch and then get our cars lined up for a photo shoot. If
enough people attend we'll caravan to one of the local scenic locations.

We'll also be having a second gathering soon. I've been trying to find
every DeLorean owner in the Northern California area. Membership is
free. We've had 2 'meets' so far. We are planning tours, tech sessions,
and perhaps we'll even host a larger event. If you'd like to join in
just let me know. Soon we'll have our own web site for club information
and announcements and a message board. Having a lack of DeLorean service
facilities in our area makes it all the more important for us to band
together.

If you like to see some photos from our last 2 'meets', check out my web
site!

Hi John,

Not wishing to seem "Politically incorrect" but was this arrest warrant issued
in Ireland or Britain/N.Ireland. Surely it was only the Brits that got 'stung'
financially by the DeLorean saga? JZD can still go kiss the Blarney Stone if he
wants, surely?!

I recall as a kid at Limavady Grammar School (20ish years ago) in
History/Geography Class, how the N.Ireland Industrial policy had changed after
the DeLorean experiment ... Govt. Grants would from then on concentrate on
'local cottage industries' rather than big brash investments.

I later worked for the architect who had built the factory at Dunmurray. We put
forward proposals for Govt. to split it up into a number of smaller units.

Cheers, IAN

The doors will tend to sag more in cold weather as they are gas charged they
follow the perfect gas law equation PV=nRT which predicts as temperature
decreases so does the pressure if volume is fixed. Although the usual
Delorean parts dealers are the easiest to get replacement struts with a
little research there are cheaper alternatives. If you are interested; you
may notice that the ends unscrew from the strut, this is important, save the
ends and measure the dimensions of the gas cylinder, industrial supply
companies such as McMaster-Carr in southern California can replace the
cylinder for considerably less than you will pay for the complete strut from
a parts house. I did this for my doors, engine louvers and hood. -Sweaty

So, Kayo, you can't chrome plate aluminum? That's going to come as a
surprise to the people out there who do that for a living. Sometimes I
really have to wonder about the stuff I read on here. Anyway, for what it
is worth, I have had both polished and yes chromed stock wheels on my
DeLoreans, and both are a huge improvement over the stock look. I have
chrome ones on my supercharged car, and prefer them because the upkeep is
zero. You just wash them and they look terrific. If anyone is interested I
can have them chrome plated, including painting between the spokes, for
about $189 each, plus shipping. The wheels must be in mint condition. I
also have a limited number of new wheels that can be chromed, for only $175
more.

As for Bricklins, I had for years wanted to own one just so I could compare
it to the DeLorean (and get pictures of the two, doors up, side-by-side in
my driveway). I finally got my chance - a few years ago I picked up a very
low mileage car for only $4,000. Another DeLorean owner and I were going to
go halves on it, but at the last minute he chickened out. It was a very
early car, ugly Suntan color, with the AMC drivetrain. It still had the
slow hydraulic doors and some significant damage to the top of the door
skins, but otherwise was quite nice. But it was like driving a Javelin. It
also felt like a thrown-together kit car, and it got many more comments than
the DeLorean ever did - only they were all negative. The one I loved was
that it "looked like a Saab eating an eight-track tape". Anyway, it was
probably the worst car I have ever owned, and after a long two months or so
I was able to persuade my formally reluctant "partner" to take it off my
hands. And in keeping with my often-repeated statement of having "never
lost money on a collector car" I sold it to him for exactly what I had
invested in it up til then - sales tax, license, repairs, etc., rounded up
to the next even dollar. That was the best profit I ever made, because it
was GONE.

Raymond,

It takes a little patience and time to get the black trim to look like new.
All you have to do is to painted it black with Krylon Spray paint #1613 Semi
Flat Black. First clean all the black areas to be painted. Prepare all
areas to be painted such as fill nicks cracks etc. Make sure surfaces are
smooth. Clean again.

Next mask all areas not to get painted or over spray with masking tape and
masking paper (newspaper works). Spray it careful then remove tape and
protective masking paper after it is 70% dried. Let dry completely. That is
all it is need to get the new look.

All exterior black -- front and rear bumpers, rocker sides panels, windows
trim, front windshield trim, louvers, engine cover, left and right rear
engine to window panel, front air scoop, rear exhaust skirt, rear license
plate frame, tail light assemblies and the front grill. These areas will
require about 8 to 12 hours and 8 to 10 cans of spray paint.

You still have the interior areas such as the doors, front hood engine
compartment and extras if you wish to take it farther.

Dear List,

I just wanted to pass the information that I have decided to sell my
DeLorean on the online auction house Ebay.com, due to the fact that money
doesn't grow on trees and college is coming soon. I just added it to the
bidding block tonight so it won't be found in a delorean search until the
update their site, so I decided the best way for people who want to buy a
DeLorean was to send the URL to the people looking for a DeLorean now, so
they have a chance to get their bids on the car early.
The URL is:

Hi, everyone!

I've started the Painted DeLoreans website at:

http://home.tampabay.rr.com/deloreans/index.htm

Please stop by! Only a few people have submitted pics so
far, but they are good pics! Check out Dan's STUNNING black
and gold DeLorean!

If you've taken pictures of a painted DeLorean and would like
to see them on the site, please e-mail them to me, along with
a note granting me permission to post them. Let's make this
site a really good collection of "DeLoreans in Color!"

John I agree with you fully, furthermore as a citizen of both The Republic of
Ireland and the United States, in my opinion, the cure for the "troubles" in
the North is JOBS. JZD did it properly assuring a balance of Catholic and
Protestant workers and never had a problem at the plant. I believe the
British Gov't made a big mistake deciding not to support DMC Ireland. That
decision not only closed a potentially viable business, but sent the message
that new industry in the North is unwelcome and uninsurable. Just my 2 cents
worth!

Hey Ian,
You're right, the warrant was issued in Britian/N. Ireland, but there is
extradition between Ireland & N. Ireland (wanted people can be arrested in
Ireland for crimes committed in England/N. Ireland, and vice versa, and then
transported and delivered to the people who want them), so no, I don't think
John could "kiss the blarney stone"! Unless of course the authorities in the
North didn't know he was in the south....
Best Wishes,
John Dore, Ireland.

Like Joe said it sounds like you have a problem with the column bushing at
the bulkhead. I manufacture replacement bushings made from tough Delrin
plastic for $10.95 plus postage ($3.00 should cover it to Scotland). They
also solve most squeaks.

Dan,

Yes, you are correct, you can chrome plate aluminum.
You can even chrome plastic too, but do the finish last?

For this very reason, why many people don't suggest or use the process of
chrome plating aluminum. Longevity is the question!
I understand that this "chroming" process for aluminum is not stable for it
peels and pits faster then the surfaces that are anodized.

Heat and temperature changes will causes an electrolysis effect between the
chrome material and aluminum's surfaces -- it will be inevitable. Chroming
process requires a copper base for the chrome to start the process. One
reason why it cost so much. Second is the labor required to polish the plated
finish surface.

Aluminum as a material expands and contracts faster then the chrome surface.
Stress and heat also creates premature failure for the chrome plating. Thus
generating cracking and peeling.
Units that requires high tolerances and that are subjected to high stress are
anodized as a choice of finish.

Anodizing and does not change the balance of the unit. Chrome plating adds a
new skin to the unit's surface which will help for the wear and tear. For
example they chrome line cylinder's wall.

Durability and longevity is the question of realty.

I have seen failure in the area of chrome plating aluminum. Many people who
understand this problem will shunt the idea of chrome plating aluminum.
Unless they have UPDATED, IMPROVED or CHANGED upon this process -- forget
about it.

Many people feel this is not the right direction for the money to be
invested. The cost of the chrome plating aluminum process out weights the
cost and the durability of anodizing. I also personally think that chrome
items that are not "done right" looks gordy and tasteless.

Dear All,

The DeLorean Owners Club UK website has just been updated to include shots
from this weekend's International Classic Motor Show at the Birmingham NEC.
I was only there for a couple of hours - thanks to the other hal! I wanted
to introduce Rachel to a DeLorean and that meant going to the show on her
terms. Still my revenge is that a couple of the new shots on the site are of
her modelling the car...

Anyway, new pics include the Euro-spec rear tail light cluster as seen on
the factory right-hand drive conversions. Also pictures of the ONLY
right-hand automatic ever to leave the factory. This is the car mentioned in
a post to the DML a while ago after a picture was found in a book. It also
has unique side indicators to replace the running lights.

Please check out the Club Gallery and Members Cars pages.

Best Wishes,

Martin

Anyone know of a grey vinyl source to match the grey vinyl Delorean interior?

Entered my 81 in a car show in Winston-Salem today. very surprised to take
second place in Special Interest/Race Cars. I didn't have much time this
morning to prepare, took it to the car wash and Lexol'ed the seats, that was
about it. It got lots of attention and questions, and a lady with a
camcorder filmed it and said it would be on Forsyth County's public access
TV. The car that took first was a gorgeous blue 67 Shelby 427 Cobra, so I
was really shocked to even be in the same league!
This is the same show that my wife's Bricklin took second place two years
ago, so now both our gullwings are show winners:^)

Is there anyone in California near Victorville? I will be out in California
(all the way from Ohio)in a couple of weeks (May 17-20) and wondered if
there was anyone in the area. I will be flying out, so I wont have #16584
with me. E-mail me privately if you are in the area and maybe we can get
together or chat one day.
Thanx,

Neil,
If you have a company that can reliably re-fill struts for 1/10th the =
price, I bet you would have a lot of business from this list and other D =
owners! We all have used struts sitting around- and we all have spent =
hundreds if not thousands of dollars over the years on struts. If you =
have that company name, e-mail, phone and address- even if they need to =
be sent to the UK- that would be a very valuable thing!=20
David Levey=20

The fact that the problem is worse in cold weather would emply that the =
problem is the strut as the gas is not expanding as much as it should =
in the coldweather and many years has reduced the level ( I had the same =
thing) I got new sruts from Delorean1 and although quite expensive were =
as perfect as you would expect ,however afterwards I came across an =
advert for a company that re fills the gas in them for around a tenth of =
the cost so try and look down that street first.

This sounds like a classic window switch contact problem to me. Your
contacts are probably dirty or corroded.

> Also, the passenger side window motor moves but the window is free
> (Must be off the track).

So your passenger side must have a good switch. The first thing to try
is swapping the two switches. If this causes your driver's side window
to work then the your problem is with the contacts in the switch. Try
cleaning it (be very careful when snapping it open, don't lose any
parts!). If the contacts are really shot then you may need to find a
replacement switch.

And yes, your passenger side window is probably off of its tracks.

Darryl,

You are right! You can chrome aluminum.

You are a man with many experiences in this industry and you are highly
respected.
You do have may respect with the DeLorean marque.

I guess my reply on chroming aluminum material has not reached the DML site
that I sent several days ago to reply to another DMLer. The topic was on
chroming aluminum material. Again, chroming aluminum is still a process that
is not easy and not highly recommended for durability and longevity by the
chromers in the industry (I checked with my chromers, can they all be wrong?
I would like to know for my info.)

Yes, you are right, many people do make a living doing so. Many people do
many "other things" and sell it too, whether it is "right or wrong." The
people who do these services and may not or will not tell you all the
advantages and disadvantages to these processes. (I like to see the warrantee
program they offer with their services or products.)

On a debate of a same level, but on a different subject, it is like people
painting DeLorean motorcars. It can be done. People do it for a living too.
But let us look at the reality of painting stainless steel. The "process
and the effort" to do so is more demanding than the standard steel bodies.
But it has been done. With the "modern" formulated paints that is available
today, the painting of stainless steel, aluminum even flexible materials is a
reality that was an impossibility many years ago.

Many people painted their cars for the reasons they want "colors" to their
cars or they could not afford to change the damaged parts. Painting in this
case was their way out.

The world is moving very fast in the development of technologies and
research. Maybe they do have a "new" process or procedure in the chroming of
aluminum. If so, I would like to know of the company or person that can
teach or inform me of the process. Like painting of difficult materials is
now a reality, maybe chroming aluminum has come to age and the "old" standard
of chroming aluminum is a thing of the past? I was always like to learn and
know more.

Thanks for the update.

Krylon on the bumpers? Does that really work very well? It doesn't seem like a very flexable paint. Has anybody actually tried it, and had good results?

A great thanks to the 4 other Delorean owners who made the show. We had 5 D's

I was wondering if anyone knows of the best fix for the following problem. I
have searched the back issues but not a found a related post. On the engine
vent cover there are two hinge brackets. There are two bolts on each bracket
that bolt to the engine vent cover. one of my bolts came off when I was
snugging up the nut. It looks like the bolt is actually only a threaded stud
tacked onto the hinge bracket. Has anyone had a similar problem where the
bolt has come off the bracket? If so I was wondering how they fixed it. I
was worried about tack welding it back on because there is such a small area
to work with and also I did not want to damage the finish on the hinge.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

while useing a rear engine design. I'm trying to get more info on this
car. If possible, I'd like to find one still on the road.

I acquired a rear pair of original DeLorean rims. I am in need of a =

someone is interested. If not, I might be interested in selling the pair =
so I could purchase a replacement dash and binnacle. So, if you are =

I am sorry, but As I search for "D" I would not consider buying a painted
Delorean. The Stainless Steel "Illusion" is exactly that - the car is
Stainless Steel. I guess I am a purist, but owners who take a sabre saw and
cut the dashboard to install some kickass stereo system should be executed !
I could live with the updates but I believe the true value of the DeLorean is
to keep it as stock as possible. Another editorial comment!

Dan,

Two questions.

First, are the rims that are in pictures the original rims and the same as
the ones that are issued with all DeLoreans from the factory?

Second, what is that sticker or plate that is on front fenders just before
the doors?

It is hard to tell from the pictures on your web site.

I was driving the D lastnight and I noticed a funny smell. I took it
home and forgot about it. I took it out the next day and not a mile
down the way it died. I tried to start it but it wont stay running. It
will fire for a sec or two but when I hit the gas it dies. I opened the
fuse box behind the passenger seat and instantly remembered the funny
smell. There was a 20A glass fuse in a white holder that had melted.
The original fuse box has a melted fuse slot (w/o a fuse in it) on the
top middle row. Could this be a workaround for the melted fuse box
slot? I assume this is for the fuel pump? I havent had a chance to
replace the fuse yet but if I do I still want to know why it got so hot.
Any help?

Thank you,
Brad.

No! Wait!

DON'T use Back to Black! Unless you live in the land of permanent
sunshine! I put B2B on my D last Summer and it looked great...until it
rained. Every shower caused it to run down the side of the car (from
the plastic panels behind the windows). It took ages to get off and for
every time I got caught in rain there was a furious scrubbing session to
follow! Even now there's a faint mark where it's legacy lives...

Be Warned! Especially if you live in the UK!!

Ok crazy question time... After carefull examination it has been deemed I will have to replace my steering rack... Now for the crazy part. Anyone out there happen to have a extra steering rack that they wouldn't mind parting with? P.J Grady has reconditioned ones for $400, but after spending $1500 in engine, brake, and electrical work, I'm running a little low on funds. Or if someone has a damaged rack that has a good outer tie rod end and pinion bearing on the drivers side that would solve my problem for now.
I may have goofed up the product names.

The "Back to Black" product I think is used by some to make the tires
black again. This is NOT what I used. It kinda looks like black
paint. I did buy it, but never used it.

The product I did use is something I had laying around for a while. It
may have been "Black Chrome", or something like that. Recently, Mothers
Gold has a similar product they sell. I purchased it this weekend, but
have not tried it yet.

The product I used holds up well in the rain, and does not leave any
drips.

I looked at one of these while I was car shopping, before I
bought my DeLorean. It was built on a 1968 or 69 Porsche frame,
with a 1972 911 Porsche engine. The car was FAST, and handled
well, but the brakes were pretty bad. Whoever built it had used
drum brakes on all wheels, and on top of that I they needed some
work.

It had a very kit car feel to it. Since this is the only one I've
seen close up, I don't know how much of that was due to design
and how much to the workmanship of the builder. The seats and
armrests are basically cushions resting on the floor. There was a
separate switch for raising and lowering the headlights, and they
moved rather slow. The outside door handles are just recesses
into the fiberglass, with little metal pushbuttons to open the
doors.

The DeLorean is more finished, comfortable, has better visibility
(especially out the back), and of course has the stainless steel
body. The Cimbria has more wow factor in its performance (though
I don t know about the VW powered ones).

Basically, I think the DeLorean is more nice car, and the Cimbria
is more toy.
