It can and does happen. It is believed my clog came from some sandlike substance breaking up in the old style accumulator. The oriface tube was stuffed solid, and all the lines had to be cleaned out with a special kit. Since I was spending a fortune anyway, I took the giant leap and replaced the old style accumulator with the new one, replacing the hose and all. Then I had it recharged with R-134 to see how that would work. It cools fine. If R-12 cools more than R-134 I would imagine it could get pretty cold in that car. For anyone wanting to convert, if you do not like the R-134, it's not a difficult process to change back to R-12. Your shop evacuates, changes the oil in the compressor, and recharges. I just took the "D" for its emission test here in Arizona and failed the portion that deals with oxides of nitrogen (NOX). The brochure provided to me by the testing described what to look for: 1) Possible EGR system malfunction 2) Abnormal engine operating temperature (car has run consistently within normal temperature ranges) 3) Air management system 4) Lean air/fuel mixture 5) Catalytic converter efficiency 6) Over-advanced off-idle timing The question I have is out of these possible causes, which is the most likely to cause this failure and have checked first, then second, etc.? I'm sure this has occured to someone else and any assistance is greatly appreciated. FYI, the car is a 1983 automatic with 2,760 miles. Thanks again. When my mechanic took out the old one, along with the fans he noticed that the plastic housing around the left side fan was broken and the bracket holding the raditor and fans on that side was bent. Presumably from a curb or pothole (the #1 cash crop for Colorado in the spring). Straightening this out has not been a problem but this brought attention to the fact that the cross member of the frame right behind the radiator is bent up about 1/4-1/2 inch. This is just enough to pinch into the above mentioned fan housing and stopping the fan from turning (yes, the fan still works and did not burn out !?!). Strangely, I was not having cooling problems and it doesn't seem to effect the suspension. No uneven tire wear. My mechanic is going to lengthen the arms holding the radiator and fans about 3/4 of an inch (This is almost the maximum amount of room there is to work with.) to give the fan the clearance it needs to turn. Has anyone else had this problem? All I can say is that I'm glad I have a second car for when my D isn't roadworthy. I am also very thankful I still live with my parents. If I had to pay rent as well, I think I would have to sell it, at cost, immediately. I work full time as a detailer at a Pontiac dealership, and it's barely enough to support me and my car. Whenever anything goes wrong with the car, I am forced to split the cost of repairs with my dad. And right now, I am $300 in debt to him because of the D. I am trying to sell the car now, but I hope to own another in the future when I am more financially stable and can care for the car, and have some spending money too. It turned o= ut to be two things. One, my whole fuel system had just been taken apart an= d cleaned part by part, including the fuel tank. I wouldn't sell the car, unless you just absolutly need the money. I know its not my buisness, but I dont want you to make a mistake you might regret later. Just stick the car in your parents garage, or in storage somewhere, and go crank it and let it run every now and then. This was the reason the factory created Safety Campaign No. RA-0001 which included two heavy duty doubler plates and strengthening brackets. If you frame extension is bent up to the 1/4 to 1/2 inch as you mentioned it will affect your front end geometry therefore you will need to have the frame re-aligned. The reason that your cooling system has not been greatly effected is because the system can maintain cooling with the failure of one of the cooling fans. However, the one fan operation will effect your AC cooling efficiency especially when the car is not in motion. Having your mechanic creating special brackets to compensate for the bent frame member is a "band-aid" type fix. For your safety, do the job right. Mark, 1) First, there is no EGR valve system on the DeLorean, so skip this information. 2) Based on the cooling system gauge reading normally for you, I would skip looking for a hot spot in the cylinder head or cylinders. 3) There is no air management system to speak of, so skip this. 4) Lean/Air fuel mixture is a good possibility. 5) With only 2,000 miles on the car, it is really doubtful that there is a catalytic convertor problem. The car would have to be running rough or poorly to create a problem in this area considering the low mileage. 6) Timing is a major factor in high NOX emissions. I can not speak for Arizona's smog inspection procedures, but here in California we have to check the timing during the smog test, so I would have to assume that this was also done and the timing is within specifications. So what is causing your failure? Please provide me with the reading of NOx, HC, CO, and O2 if you can. Did you fail at the idle portion of the test or the 2500 rpm level? Was the car fully warmed up before the test was performed? Are you having any other problems? I will provide what help I can without seeing the car.
