An old door resting against a barn pillar fell over causing the door handle to hit the right front fender creating a small quarter sized dent right on the fender lip. I did what I could to get it out but it is still there like a beacon saying "FIX ME!" Question: Does anyone had a similar size repair done? What this is going to cost to retool out? I'll take the fender off and ship it but I'd like to know roughly what the cost will be so I can decide if I call my insurance company. Anyone have any thoughts on that??? Also, if anybody has the time, what is the procedure for removing the fender? Is this a difficult job? I assume you need to remove the front fascia....... HOWEVER, in as much as you are from Germany with it's wonderful Autobahn, you should know that in section L:12:01 of the DeLorean Workshop Manual, a seperate set of specs are provided for high speed driving. The manual calls for 29 front and 34 rear. There is no definition of high speed driving. When I do long road trips I Usually go to 25 and 32. For what it is worth, the spare should be inflated to 60 lbs. This car= was originally bought in Okla City in Sep 1981 (I have the original purcha= se order) for $US27601. It seems to have been brought to Australia in abou= t 1990. The car has been fully converted to Right Hand Drive using a comp= lete mirror procedure. The car seems to have had about 3 owners in Austral= ia prior to me. It seems to have been in storage for the last 3 or 4 years= . This car is one of only 5 D's known to be in Australia. There are no ot= hers in my state (Queensland) The D is in pretty good shape. The interior trim is excellent condition w= ith very little evidence of sun damage. The body pannels are clean and rel= atively free of scratches and the rubber bumpers are great. I have replac= ed the tyres and all hoses and engine fluids etc. The speedo cable needed = repair. I work as a cardiologist in Brisbane Australia. I intend to use the car on= ce or twice per week between hospitals, alternating it with my other car (E= 240). I obtained the obligatory "88 MPH" plate. Surprisingly, the project= has the full support of my wife. As this is the only D ever to have lived= in this city (or maybe there was one in a collection 10yrs ago) the D turn= s many heads as it passes by. The following short list of problems has arisen Alternator completely failed and the battery has depleted several times. I= t doesn't look that old and is being worled on as I type There is a current leak - I think the door lights on the left door are not = going off when the door closes. The alignment of the doors and their closing is not good. This will take s= ome work and I expect difficulty finding a local body shop who can deal wit= h this problem There has been warping around the front windshield which will require some = form of rebuild All in all, these are only minor problems which I am sure can be solved wit= h suitable application of MONEY. I am delighted to have joined the Delorean Fraternity. After checking everything else, especially the fuel pump boot and hoses, I checked the cap on the fuel gauge sending unit on the fuel tank. It seemed tight, but I opened the plastic ring very carefully with a set of large channel locks, checked the rubber gasket (which appeared to be OK), then carefully retightened the ring. You either have fuel seeping past the fuel pump boot and or cover seal or your roll over valve is defective. A physical inspection of the fuel pump area should reveal any leakage in that area. To test the roll over valve just by-pass it. If the odor goes away replace the valve. The stainless hose won't change that. Replacing the hose is not that difficult. It requires grubbing around under the car and messing with brake fluid. You will need to bleed the clutch after the hose has been replaced. You can route the new hose along the same path as the old hose. I assume you don't have a shop manual. Otherwise any mechanic should be able to find this switch (actually it's not too hard to find even without a manual). I assume by "switch" you mean the temperature sensor that activates the relays that control the cooling fans. This sensor is mounted on the cooling line on the driver's side of the engine compartment toward the bottom. It is definitely described in the searchable DML back issues on the website. Because the subject comes up so often, I believe it is very common to have trouble with this circuit, especially if your car still has the original relays. That is why Rob Grady sells so many Fanzillas. I removed the fender and took it to a body shop in Grand Rapids, MI. that is associated with a dealership that used to sell D's. The rate at that shop is $30/hr. and it took 4 hours to complete for a total cost of $120. It looks like new. I suppose the rate you pay will depend very much on who does the work...or if they ca= n do it at all. These guys have repaired two separate dents/dings and don't think repairing stainless it's a real big deal so they charge at normal bod= y shop rates. So it will very much depend on the shop to a large extent and how they view working with stainless. Taking off the fender is not difficult...just follow the repair manual instructions. You do not have to take the facia off completely...just loosen one side of it. You will have to remove the hood to access those bolts. No big deal...just mark the hinge positions and work slowly and carefully like any other repair. The entire fender removal took me less than 1 hour. A rough estimate based on your description would be between $300 and $500. It's too bad that you have already tried the repair yourself, the more the metal is fatigued the more difficult it is to restore, this could increase the cost of repair. There are two causes of this condition. You either have a defective time/temperature switch or a defective fuel accumulator. If the battery has had several complete discharges it will not perform well when under stress. To test if the door lights are causing your current leak pull fuse # 12 and see if the problem goes away. Your door and body problems could become much more complex if not handled properly. Be absolutely sure that whoever works on your doors knows exactly what they are doing. It doesn't look that old and is being worled on as I type There is a current leak - I think the door lights on the left door are not going off when the door closes. The alignment of the doors and their closing is not good. This will take some work and I expect difficulty finding a local body shop who can deal with this problem There has been warping around the front windshield which will require some form of rebuild All in all, these are only minor problems which I am sure can be solved with suitable application of MONEY. I am delighted to have joined the Delorean Fraternity. I plan to attend the Delorean Owners Assoc Octoberfest In St Loius in combination with a trip to my Alumini (The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Ohio) where I trained in 1995-1996. However they also restrict you to 2500 miles annually. Prior to the introduction of the Fanzilla this was the modification of choice. Check all the wiring to these added components, if everything looks OK you're better off just leaving it alone. Re wiring the electrical compartment back to the factory original just to accommodate the Fanzilla could be very labor intensive if you don't know exactly what you are doing. If you decide to sell your Fanzilla we would be glad to place it on in the classified section of our web-site free of charge. When first started it dies immediately, restart and die again. This happens for several tries until the engine will just stay running, (very rough) . Any application of the gas pedal kills the engine during this time. After two or three minutes, no problem, engines runs smooth and accelerates fine. So that's the story, any ideas.
