I've seen this with GM cars in the past. Some switches have a different source of power to the ignition system while in start vs. run mode of the ignition switch. Therefore, if this is the problem and the start source of power is not working properly, your car will never start while the key is in the start position. However, as soon as you release the key, the switch goes to the run position, thereby providing power to the ignition system and allowing the engine to run. It will start because the engine still cranks for a second from when you held the key in the start position. I don't know if Delorean ignition switch is the same, but it sounds like it!! Hope this is helpful, let us know what it turns out to be. Brian Vin 16584 I'm having a starting problem and wanted to ask for advise from the group The story is the car rarely starts what I'll call normally - like every other car I've owned. I used to own another Delorean and don't remember ever having a problem. I typically have to turn the key and then let go and hope the engine starts. I don't "hear" it start as the starter is turning like any other car. Sometimes it just won't start no matter what I do short of pushing the car. I can wait sometime a short time, sometime longer, then it starts like it usually does (when I let go of the key). Never any pressure on the gas pedal. I replaced the fuel accumulator & the fuel pump a couple of months ago (about 1000 miles ago). The car has always started since then until recently. The fuel gauge was at about 1/4 tank both times ?? (not sure if that's an issue) Another puzzling part is that although the starter turns very strong the car won't start but when I do push the car there is no hesitation in it starting. It starts without any effort at all. I have owned mine since 1989 and bought it from the orginal owner. Although I have several other newer and expensive cars, I always get attention when I take the Delorean for a spin. After looking at other well-used Delorean's, I can better understand why many are only going for only $15,000. You get what you pay for and it's pay now or pay later. I own my DeLorean for 3 1/2 years. It is now the summer and it has been extremely hot on the East coast. The last couple of days we been having a heat wave here in NYC. Yesterday was the Fourth of July. My situation for the last three summers and just yesterday it happened again, is that when the ambient temperature gets very hot at extremes above the 88 degrees, there is strong smell of gasoline in the interior of my DeLorean. This smell is strongest when creeping in traffic or standing with the engine running, after a long run or several hour hours of usage. This doesn't happen in the cooler ambient temperatures. This condition leads me to believe that the odor of the gas may be coming form the area of the tank -- the front of the vehicle? When the vehicle moves, the air fans the smell away from the under carriage of the car so there is no odor when moving? The level of the smell, is like a small rag damped with gas left in the interior. I can''t trouble shoot the problem, unless there is high ambient temperature and the extreme hot temperature is not there all the time? There is no leak or drip of gasoline, the fuel consumption is normal. Anyone with experienced answers? They offer a comfortable quiet ride and can handle any challenge your DeLorean can offer them. However, I am concerned about the size of the front tires. The 205 is considerably oversized than the spec. 195's. This size tire my come into contact with the fender during severe menders. Your problem is probably related to the clutch hydraulic system. Does you DeLorean have the factory plastic clutch line or the improved stainless steel braided line. If you find the plastic unit in place replace it with the stainless unit and you will have smooth sailing; or should that be shifting! Now here is the stupid question: what was the original problem? Somehow we have lost a description of your original problem. I went back in my files and here is the earliest post from you leading up to today. "believe I have finally come to an inpass with my DeLorean. I have a problem with the fuel enrichment circuit that may envolve the main fuel pressure regulator. I have no means of checking fuel pressures at the different points in the engine so I am asking the "List" for suggestions. I guess my last resort would be to drive the car up to PJ Grady. Since I live in Virginia its going to take about 10-12 hours to get there."
