Many cars traveled many miles before they were repaired, thus showing far fewer miles then the car actually had traveled. Over the 15 years plus that I've been an owner I've seen lots of very ragged out Ds showing very low recorded miles. I'm sure there are plenty of them out there also that were very well maintained except for fixing the odometer until the first owner was ready to sell. The brown stains will come off! My DeLorean had spots on the door panels, on the windshield's post and the dash board. It is most likely from the factory. It is from dripped adhesive glue or sloppy handling during the gluing process. The stains are the adhesive glue that have aged and turned brown. It can be very removed if you have the patience, a good hand and understanding the working characteristics of the acetone solvent. Do not work on a humid or cold day. White streaks may appear. Wear glove to protect your hands and do this in a well ventilated area, unless you what to get "high." Work in the shade with no sun shinning on the area. The sun's heat will cause the acetone to dry too quickly and making it difficult to control. The old glue is dried out and hard. If the stain a glue spot is thick, you will need patience and a good hand. If the stain is thin, just go to the next step below, using the acetone. The first step is to thin out the glue spot with a razor or an Exacto knife by scraping it slowly with care. Do not press the cutting edge in the surface. Just scrap the brown glue spots. The old glue will flake off. When you see and feel that the glue is thinned out and smaller in size -- STOP. The next step requires a some care. Take a very clean rag (white) or Q-tip and dampen with the acetone solvent. Make sure it is NOT DRIPPING WET -- JUST DAMP enough to work with. Dap and wipe the brown spot area only! The acetone will "MELT" the surface of the finish too -- take care. You must get the feel of this process. With patience and some care, you will get the results. Don't rush. Work with the acetone not against it. Do this by quickly wiping the area of the glue spots only and no other area! You must rotate the rag or Q-tips between every two to three or four quick wipes -- Then stop and let dry! Also, do not reintroduce the melted old glue onto nearby surrounding area which will be soften by the acetone. The wiping of the acetone will melt the glue and the surface underneath the glue too. Don't fret. It will dry and harden up again. YOU MUST LET THE AREA THE ACETONE CONTACT TO DRY BETWEEN EACH TIME. Repeat the process until the brown spots are remove! Afterwards, you can give it a final swipe in ONE DIRECTION ONLY. Do the whole entire running length of the surface with a damp rag to blend in the spot with the rest of the panel or the area. This surface will feel "soften," it will dry and harden up again. You can also clean all the other surface if you take great care with the acetone. I have clean and blended my WHOLE GRAY interior of my DeLorean. It gives it a new surface looked by cutting off the old dirty grimy surface where other cleaners can't. Then finish with a good interior car finish. I have also used acetone to clean the surface and to fill the minor crack hair line cracks by "controlling the melting" of the gray dye. I have filled the minor cracks with the melted dye in the leather sections. Again, with one good final finish wipe with a damped acetone rag, the leather surface will look cleaner, much better then before. Do this with caution in not wiping too much other wise you may see the "tan" leather surface -- Do it just once or twice, enough to clean off the grimy layer. Before you begin, get some experience first. Remove a panel and try this process on the underside of the panel or an area that is not noticeable. Once you are confident with the process, then got for it. Once again. You must exercise care and experience helps. Content-Type: text/plain; format=flowed Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hi, I think that the insurance difference between England and the USA is huge. My current car, the Calibra, is only one insurance group (we have 20 over here) short of porsche and ferrari which means it is classed as a high performance car. I initially had problems getting insured on it but no longer, this is why I find it hard to believe that I cannot find insurance for the 'D'! From the people I have spoken to, the 'D' would only be classed as a group 9 or 10 insurance, but it is because of it's class as "classic" that stops me, NOT because I cannot afford it. I currently pay around £1000 a year for the calibra which in american dollars is about $1600/$1700 at the moment, a lot you might agree! If I could get insurance, for around £1000 I would take it. But thanks again for the support and if I have any luck, you'll be the first to know! I believe it is the "official" scale and is used worldwide. There are some minor differences, some drop the 6 designation and lump non-running cars with running beaters. 1-4 are very consistent. Concours results are not often used unless the event at which the car is judged is also identified. There can be a big difference between a National Corvette Restorers Society 89 point Corvette and an Olmsted County Free Fair 99 point Corvette. I called Bob Stall Chevrolet in San Diego last night (since all the Chevy dealers parts counters were closed here in Houston at 7:00pm). First of all, they had no record of Part #1131411 in their computer. I then asked for an A/C dryer for a 1984 Corvette, and after a 5 minute wait, he came back with a price of $124.50, and it wasn't in stock - two days to get from the distribution center to his dealership. As Nick mentioned, there are two different dryers depending on the VIN of your car - do you think the Chevy dealer will know which is the right one for your car? Which part is the Chevy number above - early or late for the DeLorean? Who wants to spend $125 to find out? We sell both styles of A/C dryers at De Lorean Motor Company in Houston, and the dryer that is correct for most DeLoreans is Part #110120, and it's only $62.50. We know which one is correct for your car, and if you have any questions about it after you buy it, we'll be able to tell you things that Chevy dealer won't know. I'm sure that there are some cross-reference parts that are a "good deal", but I think that for a lot of them, there's no advantage. Somone undoubtedly twisted the torsion bars a notch or two to overcome the bad struts. You can either leave them alone and be careful opening the doors, or get them adjusted back down BY SOMEONE WHO KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING. A very slight "bounce" at the top is normal, but be even more careful when you open the doors after the car has been in the sun for a while. This can be hard on the mounts at the body (lower) end. These struts do not seem to be temperature compensated like more modern ones (look at the struts on the back door of a Chrysler minivan some time. No torsion bars, a very heavy door, and they work the same hot or cold. Way too big for a DMC though.) > Also, the doors are a lot harder to close now, but I think that's normal > as a result of the new, fully-gassed struts. Yep. If you adjust the torsion bar down, it will get easier. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To address comments privately to the moderating team, please address to moderator@dmcnews.co ------------------------------ message 1342 ------------------------------ http://www.eGroups.com/list/dmcnews/?start=1342 X-Mailing-List: dmcnews@egroups.com X-URL: http://www.egroups.com/list/dmcnews/ From: "." From all the concours DeLoreans that I have seen for sale, thats about $10,000 below a typically fair price for the car. Most DeLoreans that go for about $15,000 are daily drivers or simply in fair condition in need of a little love and elbow greese. BTW, Lee Seiler is a well respected person in the DeLorean community. And, like synthetic oil, is a delorean a good daily driver, etc., there is no one answer that will apply to all persons. For example, as a 65 year old with an umblemished driving record, I went to State Farm and here, in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, they wouldn't insure the DeLorean for anything but liability even though I had two other cars insured with them and the DeLorean was to be an occasional use pleasure car. So, at least for me, State Farm is NOT the answer. Fortunately, ther is one advantage in getting older - - AARP. I obtained all my auto insurance through them with the Hartford. A final note: When comparing coverage and stating rates, I suggest we state what the coverage is. FULL coverage tells me nothing. Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit With the recent talk about auto insurance, an important point to consider (especially with collectable vehicles) is that most insurance does NOT provide for replacement cost. What this means is that if your Delorean receives considerable damage in an accident, your insurance company may decide that the repair cost exceeds the DEPRECIATED VALUE of your eighteen year old vehicle. Believe it or not, your regular auto insurance may put a value on your Delorean of only a few thousand dollars. You could become painfully aware of this fact, only when you filed a claim. Let's say someone backs into your door, and the repair costs to replace the door are $5000. The insurance company may calculate the depreciated value, on your 1982 Delorean, that originally sold for $20,000 when purchased new, is now only worth $4,500! The $4,500 would be the amount you would be paid, upon surrender of the vehicle. This is the case with most auto insurance, unless stated differently, IN WRITING. If you think this sounds outrageous, check it out, BEFORE you need to file a claim. I'm speaking from personal experience, fortunately the vehicle was not my Delorean. The way around this debacle, is auto insurance stated value riders, or insurance from companies specializing in collectible vehicles. This is one of those areas where extra caution is needed and everything needs to be in WRITING. All traces of dirt, vinyl protectants like Armour-All, and lint must be removed or the dye will not adhere properly. I would recommend removing the dash from the car to do this properly. If there are any cracks in the dash, skip this process and go directly to Just Dashes or similar shop and have the dash recovered. It pays to stick to a single dye system. There are several available, I like to use Ditzler. The Ditzler system has a cleaner, a vinyl conditioner and of course, the dye. The dye needs to be applied with a spray gun on a surface as big as the dash. You should also use a flex agent in the dye. Some upholstery repair shops will be able to do this for you if you don't have the equipment. You might also try a body shop that restores cars, not one that just does collision repair. Many owners had their torsion bars re-adjusted to compensate for their weak struts. To correct your problem have your torsion bars re-adjusted. I used to own another Delorean and don't remember ever having a problem. I typically have to turn the key and then let go and hope the engine starts. I don't "hear" it start as the starter is turning like any other car. Sometimes it just won't start no matter what I do short of pushing the car. I can wait sometime a short time, sometime longer, then it starts like it usually does (when I let go of the key). Never any pressure on the gas pedal. I replaced the fuel accumulator & the fuel pump a couple of months ago (about 1000 miles ago). The car has always started since then until recently. The fuel gauge was at about 1/4 tank both times ?? (not sure if that's an issue) Another puzzling part is that although the starter turns very strong the car won't start but when I do push the car there is no hesitation in it starting. It starts without any effort at all. Steve Pattison Vin #2628 ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Don't let the next virus knock you out!
