ALL new panels and roof, windshield...the whole works. turns out that the owner, who was front Ireland, also has a home in Georga and thats where she is. the guy at the body shop place thought it was a total loss, but the insurace company teold them to fix it. so far the total bill is over $15,000!!! they still have to refinish the panels that he ordered from DMC HOUSTON. if anybody wants to know more about the car i will gladly go over there again and talk with the mechanics. and i was upset that my shocks went out... So is the car American, or is it Irish/British? And once the statment is made, will everyone agree? However, I have my D insured with Allstate and it is very reasonable. I have full coverage on the car, too. State Farm also insures D's, but I have no idea what their rates are like. I understand they're usually competitive. I looked into classic insurance, but didn't like all of the restrictions since I like to drive my car. Good luck in your search. They are caused by the adhesive used to bond the vinyl to the dashboard. You have 3 options - replace the dash (expensive), have the dash recovered (almost as expensive), or have the dash dyed (not permanent). Check the fuses/breakers related to the fan circuit. The headlamp problem is likely to be the connector at the switch if your technicians were working in that area. I have not been able to use the car since and operated the A/C only when driving it home from the shop where it was worked on. While testing it, the "Cooling Fan Fail" light would come on every 5-7 seconds accompanied with a clicking noise. However the air was very cold coming out the vents. Is this a sign of low freon as DMC Joe says? I had asked the technicians if the freon level was okay and they said yes. Have I been fooled? They also managed to mess up my headlights/parking lights, they don't work anymore; except for the brights when I pull back on the lever. Ideas for that one? This is with a declared replacement value (the ONLY way to go with collector vehicles) of $18,000. There is a mileage limit of 2,500 miles per year. This company has been very good to deal with. It is a quite simple made tool but it works until today. When I was make my first oil change the whole oil sprayed against the frame. To prevent this dirt I cut a plastic oil can so I can place it between Frame and oil sump. The theory was that the front rotors were warped from over tightening the lug nuts (air tools). The correct torque to hand tighten is 60 ft/lbs. Had the rotors machined or replaced (can't remember which) and the problem went away. Until, the front tires were replaced by an ex-wife and the lugs over tightened again. I need more power to run the Depending on the model year of the car, you probably do. The early alternators are inadequate to operate all the accessories on the car. The later ones are adequate, but not by much. Unfortunately, replacement alternators that fit properly are hard to come by these days. As far as I know all the later-model original alternators are used up. There is a GM alternator that supposedly works also, but I don't know the specifics, nor whether it itself is still available. My suggestion would be to take your existing alternator to one of those shops that makes the giant stereos for low riders, and have them rewind it. They can make just about any alternator put out as much power as you want. Then, you don't have to worry about fitting mounting brackets, belts, etc. that you would with a replacement. For a more or less stock DMC-12, 100 amps should be more than enough. Ryan, Welcome to the World of DeLorean Ownership! While what you describe could be caused by loose/worn front suspension components (ball joints, tie rod ends, etc.) it is usually due to a warped front disk rotor. Good news: they can be turned. Bad news: there is not a lot of meat on the rotor and by the time they have been turned true, they are often under the safe thickness and you have to replace it/them. Also, after turning the rotors, they are more prone to warping since they are thinner. Related problem: After you fix the above, the car may develop a shimmy at high (freeway) speed. This is a front wheel balance problem caused by: (1) different amounts of metal being removed from one part of the rotor than from another; (2) Different weight distribution in the replacement rotor; or (3) the front tire(s) not being re-mounted in exactly the same position. The best solution is to locate a tire shop that can spin balance the tires ON THE CAR. This procedure is not commonly used (except on race cars) but is much superior to either static (bubble type) balancing or 'computer spin balancing' since it balances the entire rotating mass (hubs, rotors, wheels, and tires). In the summer with the A/C, the headlights and the wipers on while in creeping in traffic, the DeLorean electric's system just doesn't cut it. I had changed the battery to an Optima battery hoping that will help. It did help -- very little. Last Friday, I had Rob at PJ Grady change my unit to a new digital by Delco with 105 amp output. It is the same size of the original unit. It use the same bracket and a little change int the wiring. It was not cheap, but it is worth the money, every penny of it. It gives the DeLorean a new feel. Now, there is correct and decent electrical power when everything is turn on. No more dimming, especially while creeping in the slow street and highway traffic. It now has a little more life in the ignition's electrical system -- slightly more pep. I am glad I made the change! I hope this personal info helps. I paid $120.00 for a recharge, but this did include the check for leaks and to put a dye in the system so that we could see if there were any small leaks in the system. The dye can be seen with a ultra violet light. After the dye was placed in the system I operated the car for a few weeks and then they went over all the AC components with the light. If there is a leak they dye will show up with the light. As for the light switch, sounds like they have disconnected the wires from the switch, because I know the switch was working before and they were in that area correcting your mode switch. Should be no problem to correct this. Now Darren's D has the original fan fail module and cooling fan relay. I have the factory jumper wire for the fan fail module that I am currently not using, because I have installed Fan-Zilla. If we install the jumper wire should this solve his problem. His fan fail light only comes on when the fans are on and working. I would also like to think DMC Joe for all the questions that he answered for me today. He was a big help. Most dealers have little idea what a = DeLorean=20 is worth. I bought my D from a dealer, and he sold it very reasonable=20 considering its low mileage, 6301, and excellent condition because he = thought parts were non-existent. =20 - Most dealers also know about Hemmings, and have some general idea = about what a D is worth. It seems, however, given the thin market for = DeLoreans, that the price can vary wild from region to region, time of = year and particular transaction. Don't buy a D for an investment- it is = not a good one. Buy it because you like it. Should our cars = "appreciate" in value, given the time it takes to keep them in running = order, just means that we have lost less money that most. I think when you actually go and see these cars that are described as = "mint" for under $15000 you will be sorely disappointed. =20 -As you suggested, you might be suprised and truly come across a very = very nice car for cheap. In fact, if someone is dilligent in their = search, patient and a decent negotiator- and perhaps willing to do a = little work- a bargain D can still be had for under 15K. Mint condition is one of those terms that people who know very little = about cars throw around to attract buyers. =20 -Again, I would disagree. There are very well known criteria as to what = a mint or near mint DeLorean should be. And, as other have said, it is = not necesarily a low milage car. But it is a car with a clean interior, = good seats, electronics and fuel systems clean and working, a body = without unsighly flaws, with rubber and plastic not discolored and where = needed, replaced and a frame that is not bent and reasonably free of = rust. That's a near mint/mint DeLorean. And they can be found for 15 = or so for someone wanting to search. -If you think anything above $15000 is too much for a D, check the = latest NADA guide to classic and exotic cars. I believe you'll be = surprised. =20 More than 15K is perhaps a good price for a D, but consider the work = that needs to go into one. It seems to me that a well established broad = guide exists for D pricing. 10K is probably a runner with some = significant problems. I believe a "new" D from Delorean One is 37K, = with warranty. I would assume that's the top of the market. Anything = in between is pure speculation. Just be sure to add on the labor and = the parts costs to bring the car up to where you need it to be (and then = 1-2K a year on average for maintainance and improvements). I'd like to know who has a 0 mileage D still in the plastic for $20000.=20 Again, the perfect D today, 20 years later, is not going to have 0 miles = on it. It needs to be turned on and at least warmed up every few weeks, = every month, every year. At one mile a week, that is a car with 1,000 = miles on it. And most people who love there cars will take them out = more than that. Furthermore, D's are notoriously easy to change the = miles on the car, so look at things like the pedals, seat, steering = wheel, etc to find signs of how the car was used and how much of it has = been used. I would rather buy DeLorean Joes personal 100K ++ mile car = than someone who has garaged his car since 82 and hasn't driven it much = since... Get a piece of %&$# car like me and wait till you've settled down to get your D. Then you will be able to pay the insurance and give the car the special care it needs. Most kids our age don't make much more than $400 a month. I own a piece of &%*% that is an 88 tracer and I am already in the poor house after i pay for maintenance and insurance. You'll probably change your mind just like I did, after you call the insurance company. A D is an even older car, and many of the parts are more expensive than what you would by for your ford.
