The poster " Blizzard of the 80's " is about 2'x3' and is a repo of
a
painting done by, I believe, a French artist. It shows a front view of
the
Delorean with its doors up in a snow storm.

I too replaced my original alternator with a Delco alternator but rather
than modify the Delorean mounting bracket, I modified the Delco
alternator.
That way if I ever want to put the original back on I can simply
reattach
it. The Delorean wiring also remains the same.

While looking in a car repair manual for Ford Mustangs & Pintos and
Mercury
Bobcats & Carpi, I noticed that the drawing for the front lower control
arm
is amazingly similar to the Delorean lower control arm. For that matter,
the whole suspension looks very close to the Delorean. The upper control
arm looks a little different where it attaches the frame. The manual
indicates the years were 75 - 78 Mustang and 75 - 80 Bobcat & Pinto.
Since these are only drawings in a shop manual, they could be way off
from
the D's parts but I thought I'd throw it out to the crowd to see if there
are any other opinions. I'm thinking of heading out to the local junk
yard
to see what I can find out but with winter upon us here in MN it may need
to
wait a half year :-(
If anyone can take a closer look, let me know what you find.

BELFAST, Northern Ireland (AP) - Nov 14 - The British government and
auditors
for the now-defunct DeLorean Motor Co. have finally closed the book one of
Northern Ireland's biggest-ever investment disasters.
``Both parties have agreed that it is time to bring this complex and
protracted litigation to an end,'' the government and Arthur Andersen &
Co.
said in a joint statement Friday - 12 years after the government sued
Andersen for negligence.
Neither side publicly disclosed the terms, but local estimates of the
payout
Andersen will make to the government ranged from $31 million to $37
million.
The government's legal bill, for cases pursued on both sides of the
Atlantic,
was estimated at $25 million. It had sought up to $300 million from
Andersen,
the accounting arm of Andersen Worldwide.
In 1976, the government wooed the maverick American carmaker John
DeLorean to
Northern Ireland, impressed by his promise to create a 2,000-worker plant
between deprived Protestant and Catholic sections of southwest Belfast.
DeLorean's solid-steel, gull-winged Americar won a cult following and an
ironic place in the ``Back to the Future'' films. But his dream of
building a
sports-car empire to rival the American big three automakers proved a
nightmare for the British taxpayer.
The Belfast plant closed after four years in 1982 with the loss of about
1,500 jobs. A year later, the government concluded it spent $130 million
to
prop up the venture, and that Northern Ireland had suffered incalculable
losses because the fiasco would deter other investors.
In 1985, it filed suit against DeLorean's accountants, alleging Andersen
should have done more to warn the government that DeLorean was on the
road to
nowhere.
DeLorean was acquitted on charges of cocaine trafficking in San Diego
after
the company's collapse and lives in New Jersey.
In August, an appeals court in Cincinnati ruled that DeLorean must sell
his
personal assets - including what's left of his 434-acre estate - to pay
millions of dollars in legal debts to one of his former lawyers.

The stock DMC headlights look suspiciously like the headlights on my VW
Scirocco (I like to pretend it's a D). Look at

The hi-beams are indeed controlled by this lever. When the lever is in
the
middle position the hi-beams are off. When you push forward they go on
and stay on. When you pull back the lights will flash on and then go off
when you release the lever.
While the low-beams are on you should see a green indicator light near
the top of the instrument pod. When the hi-beams are on a blue indicator
light should come on. Are your indicators working properly?
Your problem might be the hi-beam relay in the relay compartment. This
relay will interchange with a few of the other relays, so a previous
owner may have simply swapped a bad relay from a more critical
system as a quick-and-dirty repair.
You will find the relay compartment behind the passenger seat, under
the cargo deck. The first issue of the DMC News 'Zine contained a nice
diagram of the relay compartment so that you can check which relays
operate the headlights. You can download the 'Zine (plus get a link to
the free Adobe Acrobat Reader you will need) at:

Of course the problem might not be in the relay, but that is where I would
start.

Last week I posted a message about 'D' prices and VIN's and the
conditions of 2 cars for sale in Florida. I got tons of email with
questions of these two cars. I have looked at 2 more that are for sale
here in Florida, so here goes. 1981 Auto with grey leather, 9,700 miles.
VIN #004625. The body looked good(no dings)but needs to have f & r
facias painted and louvers refinished(faded).Wheels looked good with
orig NCT Goodyears. Has plastic coolant overflow. Runs fair but has lot
of vibration noise, but starts right up. Owner bought car and had fuel
system problems fixed by D1. Interior has a small amt of sun fading, but
not bad. Headliner shows evidence of leaking roof(water stained) Seats
are ok but looks to have more wear than the 9,700 miles show. Driers
side window is very slow and pass. dosent move. Brakes need turning of
rotors and new pads. The frame looks clean(no rust) but the tranny is
leaking from somewhere, and there was evidence of coolant splatter in
engine bay. Advertised price $18,000, but owner said he would accept
$14,500. The second car was the nicest DeLorean I have ever seen. 1981
black int, Automatic w/gas flap. VIN#002009(I think)45,000 miles. Body
was perfect(all panels straight and lined up just right) and interior
was just as nice, owner said seat leather was new(looked great) Orig
radio was still there!!And worked!! Windows worked perfectly and
quickly. Nice Perelli tires. It started up without hesitation and
sounded great, all gauges worked perfectly and it didnt run hot. The A/C
fans cycled on and off quite frequently(is that normal?) about every 30
to 45 seconds while A/C was on. It had steel coolant overflow and
included with it was the orig plastic one!!This car was super clean, no
frame rust and shocks looked good and clean. Owner wouldnt let me drive
it without showing him the money, but I suppose it drives the way it
looks. Asking price $15,500 and in my opinion worth every penny. I am
traveling to New York on the 24th and will be visiting with PJ Grady's
to see Rob's cars for sale and to check out his shop. The reason I didnt
buy the above car is because I need to see what Rob has first. If anyone
is interested in these 2 cars, email me for further info. I will return
home on Dec 2nd, so I will answer no email till I have made a decision
on which to purchase. Hope this helps someone.

I have a few questions about performance modifications for the DeLorean
DMC12. They are:
#1) The euro springs: Are they stiffer and offer better handeling than
the cut and swap front & rear method?(I know lower center of gravity
means better handeling, but...)
#2) Engine swaps: Anyone out there do this? What engine did you use?
Which trans did you use? Any complications? Any comments?What does
everyone think of the Grand National engine?Would that fit?Could the
DeLorean 5spd still be used with that?
#3) The twin turbo system: I know there are some of you out there that
have done this and that you love it but, how does it compare to the
single turbo system? What are the boost pressures? What are the HP
figures?
#4) Anyone out there done big break swaps?(12 or 13 inch discs) Larger
and wider wheels?(maybe 16 or 17 inch wheels)
The design of the 'D' frame and 4 wheel independent suspension with 4
wheel discs is excellent, compared to an american sports car MacPhereson
strut suspension, and deserves major horsepower to complement it.

Hi,
Well, this is an e-mail to get my revenge on all you going to fun shows
and playing with your D's in front of crowds of adoring fans. Being where
I am, joining in is a little impractical. However, for those who have seen
the "Back From The Future" video, you will be acquainted with the Classic
and Sports Car show at the Birmingham National Exhibition Centre, England.
Well, I was there on Saturday and Sunday, helping out and providing some
effects lighting for the stand, and also seeing the object of my desire
for the first time.
I and a couple of friends drove down from York leaving at 2:30am to arrive
at the NEC for 7. On two hours' sleep, we set our lights up, then stood
back to admire the two cars on display. One, VIN #5959, owned by Dave
Howarth, Grey Interior, May '81 (I think). Recently restored from the
vandalised wreck that it was when bought. The other, VIN #12179 is
obviously a sister of the RHD car mentioned in the 'Zine. Same production
date, similar VIN, owned by the Hooper family who were at the Eurofest and
bought this car two weeks after. Apparently this car was one of SIX
pre-pro RHD's used for testing including body-repair techniques and
consequently had a number of curious blemishes about the body dating back
to the factory.
The two days went really well (aside from feeling like death for most of
Saturday due to lack of sleep - my friend paid homage to the comfort of
the passenger seat in Dave's car by crashing out on it later in the day
:-) Comments like "this is the best stand I've seen at the show" weren't
uncommon.
I learnt a number of interesting facts from various people at the show,
and I shall pop a couple down here:
1) The DMC-12 was built for the American market AFTER the emissions laws
came into force in the US, but before the UK, therefore to run a D here,
it is perfectly legal to remove Catalytic converters, lambda sensors and
whatever other control items there may be to simply putting the exhaust
through the silencer with a couple of custom-made pipes. The figure I was
quoted by one Iam Titley (who also helped on the stand and who's VIN I've
forgotten) was that it increases a stock engine's output to 200HP...
2) During all the bad feeling following the closure of the factory, a
number of cases of body panels and the original molds for the underbody
were dumped in the docks in Ireland and ARE STILL THERE TODAY. The
authorities want a bit much to fish them out, but what if one of the cases
held a load of front-left fenders...?
Oh well... that's by no means all of the story, but apart from getting to
drive Dave's car after the show and picking up one of the original DMC
tie-clips given to the executives in '82, the rest is simply my pleasure
at finally getting involved with this lovely machine other than sitting in
front of my computer discussing it with you all across the pond.

Subject: DML: Dare to Dream video
After nearly two months, my copy of the "Dare to Dream" video arrived
yesterday in the mail. I plugged it into the VCR and watched it
immediately. The video consists solely of an interview JZD gave to an
interviewer from the UK in New York sometime in 1996/early 1997.
The tape runs about an hour long and touches on JZD's career with GM, his
marriage to Christina Ferrare (who was on one of those newsmagazine shows
a couple nights ago - did anyone catch it besides me?), and the DeLorean
Motor Company debacle.
My girlfriend and I had fun watching his mannerisms and facial
expressions as he answered the interviewers questions. I am no expert on
the interpretation of body language, so I won't speculate, but I think it
would be interesting to get a professional opinion on it.
For me it was worth the $30 to get another piece of the "stuff" that goes
with having the DeLorean. It'd make a nice Christmas gift, too.
