The locking thing is true although unlikely you would have it happen to both
doors at the same time. My passenger door is currently stuck closed. It
happened when my son tried opening the door and the door lock at the same
time. to remidie the problem I will have to remove the door panel and fiddle
with the latch and lock rods. And yes it is quite a pain in the butt.

Today i was looking in my Hemmings for a Delorean I wanted to buy and I
read that this guy had a turbo delorean.. Now I read in my book that
John DeLorean didnt make these turbo engines because he got into trouble
so fast.. So is this true? And one other thing, I also read in my book
that it is possible for the mechanisms in the locking and unlocking
switches to malfunction and lock you in your car. Has this ever
happened to any of you?

I may be reluctantly offering my car for sale. It is an 81 #2423, automatic,
black interior, less than 18,000 miles. Stainless is in excellent condition,
interior probably 8 on a scale of 10 ( dash and binnacle perfect, seats show
some age cracking but no splits. I've been keeping them Lexoled since I've
owned it). Just had all cooling hoses replaced and metal header bottle
installed, Fanzilla and relay/fuse updates, new window switch and engine bay
light switch.
Financial situation is reason for contemplating sale, if things improve

Locked Out!
I was locked out of my DeLorean last November between SanFransisco and
LosAngeles. Had got out to make a telephone call at a coin box leaving the
keys in the ignition. Closed the doors, went back after the call and
everything was locked solid. Had to get the Cops and a lock-smith to get me
back into it! Didn't help that it was Thanksgiving weekend. Cost me $65 and
a lot of embarrisment!!!

The manufacturer of the factory antenna is Harada and they still have these antenna assemblies and replacement mast on the self.
If your antenna motor is still attempting to move the antenna up and down, most likely all you will require is a replacement mast.
The original mast is black, however Harada has the mast in crome and black. I just purchased and installed the crome version on my Delorean.

I am always impressed with my 17 miles per gallon, almost all short

to the De Lorean Sports Car. I was delighted to see the two
pictures and the descriptive paragraph about the car and its
concept originator, John Z. DeLorean.
I can assure Rik Paul who selected the car as a "fantasy
restoration project" that the De Lorean is one of the
easiest classics to restore and maintain. All of the parts
are readily available right over the phone. You do not have
to search endlessly through automotive flea markets to find
some piece of trim.
Many of the parts are available over the counter. De Lorean
Midatlantic has maintained a parts interchange list for over
a decade. Information about the latest edition is available
on the web at clubs.hemmings.com/deloreanmidatlantic/.
Your description of John DeLorean's involvement with the
production of the car is a bit inaccurate, however. His
"involvement - some said entrapment - in a drug trafficking
scham' was an official entrapment by an attorney at our U.
S. Department of Justice who wanted to bolster his
reputation. The finding of illegal entrapment was a finding
of a jury. Also, John DeLorean did not "spend time in the
slammer". He was arrested and released on bail pending
trial, a trail that completely exonerated him of the
charges.
I am proud to report the John DeLorean is alive and in good

I'd like to relate a problem I had with my car that could have had serious
consequences. Last Saturday my wife and I left for a car show in our
supercharged Chevy powered DeLorean. The first 10 miles or so of the trip
was on a winding, narrow country road, and I let the car out a little,
easily exceeding twice the speed limit of 40 MPH at times. I backed off
once we hit the state highway, and cruised another 20 miles or so to the
show. Upon entering the parking lot I stopped to chat with an old friend,
and then turned hard right when suddenly BANG the left front wheel was at a
terrible angle. Thankfully I could drive straight ahead to a parking spot,
where I got out the never-used jack to see what had happened. The lower
ball joint had broken at the nut, and the lower control arm had popped off
of the spindle! I don't want to think of what would have happened if that
had failed a few minutes earlier. I bummed a ride home where I got some
tools and several spare ball joints, and was able to replace it in the
parking lot in a short time.
I know there was a lower ball joint recall from the factory, and as a parts
vendor I thought I knew which was the correct one to use; plus I had rebuilt
every piece of this car's suspension myself. And yet somehow I had managed
to use the wrong parts, an error which could have had deadly results.
The point of this is: check your lower ball joints. The bottom (where the
zerk fitting is) should have a crowned shape. If it is a flat circle about
1 1/4" diameter which appears crimped into the larger housing, REPLACE IT!
(It also appears the nut on the correct one is 19mm, compared to 18mm on the
faulty one, but check the bottom to be sure.) The stud on these ball joints
is undercut and weak at the point where the taper ends and the threads
begin, and could fail - mine did. (And if anyone is curious, the elapsed
time today to remove both lower control arms and replace both ball joints,
alone and without a spring compressor, just a floor jack, was 4 hours.)
I welcome input from Joe, Stephen, etc. on this subject.

I gotta admit this is a pretty cool site. But I found one thing that they
had wrong. It said that in BTTF 2 when the old Biff went back to 2015 he got
out of the car dying. This is not true cause when he got out his cane broke
and hit him in the stomach. I wouldn't exactly consider that dying.
The end of his cane fell onto the floorboard in the delorean and that's how
Doc figured out that Biff used the time machine.

My window sticker says 19 mpg for a 1981 with the 5-speed. Window stickers
back then only listed one number rather than both a city and highway
mileage like the modern ones. Wasn't that supposed to be an average for a
specific course with both city and highway miles?
Anyway, on a recent trip to visit our parents we got 25 mpg on a trip that
was about 85% highway and 15% city.

DeLoreans were not turbocharged from the factory. Well...there was the
prototype "Legend" car that Legend Industries was converting to twin turbo
with intercoolers, but nothing ever rolled out of the factory with turbos.
I've been debating a turbo kit for ours since I would *really* like the
horsepower boost, but haven't decided yet. See the archives for more info.
The book "Delorean: Stainless Steel Illusion" has some info on the legend
car including pictures.
Yup, locks can be a problem. Again, check the archives at

DMC Joe just recently posted the procedure for getting the door open from
the inside if it happens. I'm still relatively new to the DeLorean world,
but I've heard that PJ Grady's Lockzilla will take care of the problem.

from time to time. If anybody asks, I want turbos for Christmas...
When I first got the car is had been more-or-less stored for about 7 years
(only about 3k miles in that time) and I had the wandering idle. It bounced
from 500 to 2000 RPMs constantly and people at stop lights always thought I
was challenging them. :-) But I drove it daily and used a gas treatment
in every tank, and it slowly settled down. After 6 months the idle was
rock-steady.
The moral of the story? Drive it! Drive it! Drive it!

Just picked up an '82. Was showing it off to some friends and had the
hood latch break on me - inside under the hood, not at the lever! So now
I can't put gas in my car. Anyone have this happen, and know how I can
break in without destroying my hood?
I'll start searching the archive online, and will be taking a look at a
friends car to see if I can do anything with a slim jim - but if anyone
can help me I'd greatly appreciate it.

Dave,
HI Guys !!! The Delorean Touring Soceity ( Dick, Bruce and Marty)
want to say Hi ! and wish you guys were here. Right now we happen to be
in Jasper, Alberta Canada. Talk about a fantastic trip so far !!! The
sceniery is unbelieveable up here. So far we've done about 3000 miles
in 8 days with nothing but good times with good people. Were North of
the contental divide in the Canadian Rockies where all the rivers flow
North to the Artic. We've still got a little farther North to go to
Edmonton for a few days, and then we'll start heading back Southeast
towards the good old USA. So far we've created a lot of intrest
anywhere we happen to stop with 4 Deloreans all together. It's ammazing
how many Canadians seem to know the car and a little about it. The
people and country are fantastic, very friendly and easy to get along
with. So far it's making for a GREAT get away.
Hope things are running smoothly : )

Subject: [DML] stripping paint

As a moderate purist, I would run, not walk away from a painted
DeLorean!! Many were painted because of body problems, but if you are
determined to strip a painted "D" I have a tool that is plastic and
used in the HVAC industry. Many folks have used it in stripping
furniture, I doubt that it would damage the stainless like a razor
blade. Anyone want one, E-Mail me, I'll send you one free.

The best way, and I can assure you of this, to get into the trunk when the cable is broken is:
* Put the car on a lift.
* Remove the left front wheel. This is to permit the best angle for what follows.
* Push out the rubber plug that is above the brake master cylinder and hope that there is
nothing in the trunk that will interfere.
* Using a powerful flashlight atempt to view the trunk latch mechanisim. It can be done if
there is nothing in the trunk blocking the view.
* Locate the arm that the release cable attaches to.
* Using a suitable tool, grab onto the bottom of the release arm and pull it toward the
left side of the car. Have someone else gently push downward on the trunk lid while you
are doing this in order to release as much tension from the lack mechanisim as possible.
A suitable tool may be something like a VERY stiff wire bent into a hook on the end, or
possibly a wooden broom handle with a bold screwed into the end.
This happened to me a few weeks ago while I was working with a fellow named Chester and we
learned this solution from this message group.
I might suggest that while repairimg the cable / latch mechanisim that you drill an additional
hole in the latch arm ( mentioned above ) and install a suitable ( strong ) cable into it.
Make the cable long enough to be run under the carpet and right next to the master cylinder
access plug. Install something on the end of the cable to use as a handle ( a 3/8 " bolt with
nuts and washers to clamp the free end of the cable would work well ) and secure it inside the
trunk for easy access through the master cylinder plug hole in case this situation ever arises
again.

Yes. A turbocharged version was planned for the 1984 model. The turbo
version was extremely high tech (by 1984 standards) and probably would
have produced in excess of 200 HP. Only prototypes were made of this;
none were sold through normal channels.
There are a lot of turbo DeLoreans out there; except the prototypes, they
are all done with aftermarket kits. The most popular current kit is the
"Island" kit which is a low pressure twin-turbo system developing about
170-180HP on 5-7 pounds of boost.

from dealers to the factory for a "fix". The factory in turn published
Service Bulletin No. ST-21-10/81. The bulletin gives directions and a
drawing on an alternate way to open a hood with a broken release cable.

trunk!
Thanks for all the suggestions. I tried the easy ones first, but DMC
JOE had it nailed. Once on a lift the drivers tire didn't even have to
be removed, above the brake cylinder by pushing the rubber plug up
access to the trunk was made and with a long piece of wire I was able to
see the lock mechanism . Grabbed it and what la! The trunk was opened.
HEARS A GREAT TIP FOR ALL : TO AVOID THIS PROBLEM ,RUN A WIRE
FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE LOCK MECHANISM TO THE RUBBER PLUG AT THE
BOTTOM OF THE TRUNK. THIS WAY SHOULD YOUR TRUNK CABLE EVER COME
LOSE , ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS POP THE PLUG , AND GRAB THE WIRE TO

Service Bulletin SC-03-1/81 was issued several weeks after it was
discovered that many of the replacement nuts supplied for Safety Campaign
RA-0001 (Lower Ball Joint Failure) were cracked causing stress failure of
the ball joint. The second re-call took place shortly after the first for
the same problem, therefore several cars slipped through the cracks and did
not receive the new components.

Under optimum conditions a DeLorean can get outstanding fuel economy. When I first got my car
I drive it on a two tank trip that was 99% highway, monitoring my fuel consumption very
carefully.
Driving conservatively, obeying the 65 mph speed limit, making fewest possible stops, carrying
minimum baggage and no luggage rack, I was able to get about 29 mpg!
A few years ago, when a bunch of us drove our DeLoreans from Ohio to the DOA Expo in
Nashville, other owners reported similar results. A well tuned, conservatively driven,
lightly loaded DeLorean can probably achieve 30 mpg on the highway. Of course these are
DeLorean miles, as measured by DeLorean odometers.

I was able to look at my friends car and figure out how to get into the
car.
Was curious if anyone had other formulas for paint on the facias,
especially using DuPont products in California - since I'm under the
impression that the Environ laws are stiffer out here and we don't have as
much to work with.
(I did see the post with a Ditzler number, but our paint place couldn't do
anything with it.)

You are absolutely correct with the brand name Joe. They have several products
that deal with this problem and also have products that get rid of the odor
after the fact. I would suggest the tub product to keep the mildew from
forming in the first place, and the disk product to get rid of the odor if
it's already happened. There is also a cleaning product, spray-can I think.

If you can't find these products in the store you can order online from
their web site.
(Disclaimer: No, I do not own Damp-Rid stock or otherwise have any interest
in their company except that as Joe points out, this is a great product to

My insurance company required an appraisal by a professional automotive
appraiser. Since I bought mine from a classic car dealer, they had their
on-staff appraiser do it. He knew what the cars were worth, but was willing
to work with me on the dollar amount on the appraisal form as long as it
wasn't too far out of line. He ended up writing it for $22,500 since it
only had 3500 miles on it and was in VERY good condition. This was more
than I paid for it, but not an out of line amount for an appraisal. My
insurance company accepted it without any questions as did the credit union
where we financed it.

Excuse me Ken, but where does one find the DeLorean Owners Directory?
A quick visit to the DMC News site and a look at the DeLorean Production
Chronology list reveals that there is only ONE couple listed there, Ron
and Margaret Jackson. This is hardly a "large number" and does NOT include
Patty and Mike Substenly! I assume that the DPC list includes all those
that submitted their names to the DOD and that those that didn't want
their names published were listed as "Name Withheld" (only two of those
that I saw). The Substenly listing on the DPC is simply "Mike Substenly".
I submitted a listing several months ago in the name of "Ann & Ed Thompson"
but it has yet to be posted. I understand that you are very busy and it
will take a while for you to catch up so I'm not complaining that my listing
has not yet appeared. When and if it does, it seems that we are the ONLY
couple to post with the woman's name first. Since day one our posting name
in the DML has been "Ann & Ed Thompson". We are joint owners of our DeLorean
and are joint enjoyers. If anything, Ann gets more pleasure from our DeLorean
than I do. (BTW, she is also the principal driver of one of our Corvettes.
Her very first car was a brand new 1964 Corvette!)

Please be advised that insurance companies are regulated by individual states
and each state sets their own rules and regulations.
There are value guides for cars such as the DeLorean but they are only "guides"
and not necessarily guides for actual values. These guides are generally used
for personal property taxes (where applicable) and loan values by lending
institutions. Here in Virginia, the owner of a "vintage" automobile is allowed
to establish and "declare" the value. The insurance premium is then adjusted
according to the "declared" value. Of course the insurance company reserves the
right to have the car appraised and the declared value authenticated.
For example, in Virginia, a $25K DeLorean (mine) would have the same insurance
rate as any other car with a value of $25K (assuming everything else remains the
same). The rate is adjusted for things like frequency of being driven. For
example, my DeLorean is NEVER driven to work or business (or even shopping for
that matter). At 9,850 total miles, it has been driven an average of about
500 miles a year. On the other hand my $25K Chrysler Concorde has been driven
considerably more and consequentially has a much higher premium. If by chance
I were to (shudder) "total" my DeLorean, the damage would be considerably more
than $25K but the insurance company would only have to cough up $25K (less
salvage value). BTW, a "totaled" Delorean could possibly have a salvage value
of more than its insured value (because it wouldn't take a great deal of damage
to exceed its value as a whole car and good used Delorean parts are quite valuable).

My fan failure light stays on when the A/C is on. It doesn't seem to affect
the cooling since the temperature gauge does not go over 200. The two
radiator cooling fans only one is running, the one on the driver side does
not run at all. I do not believe that this was by design, so where should I

At the front of the car jack stands should be placed under the rear portion
of the tow hooks. At the rear of the car the jack stands should be placed
at the corners of the main rear frame member adjacent to the rear tow
hooks.
Take steps to provide protection between the jack stand and the frame to

the little investigating I have done in northern California, I
believe I once found a dealership with a DeLorean (it might have
been an exotic car dealer, and I don't remember the name...but it
was listed and pictured in a local car for sale magazine, the kind
you pick up at the grocery store). I also found a DeLorean for auction once
(repossession? drug seizure?) at Roger Ernst's auto auctions in
Modesto, CA. (You can check up on which cars they have for auction
at www.rogerernst.com).
Maybe you should just continually look in local car for sale
magazines or check exotic car dealerships? I'm not sure...MY
question would be whether or not a dealership would ever
_finance_ a car like that. I would have to suspect they probably
wouldn't, but I'm no car expert. :)

I have seen several D's at dealerships in Northern California, mostly in
Contra Costa County. I picked mine up at Fantasy Junction in Emeryville (on
consignment). Fantasy Junction is on line (http://www.fantasyjunction.com),
although they usually cater to more exotic autos, Ferrari, Lamborghini,
MacLauren, Mercedes (gullwings), etc. If nothing else it's a cool place to
drop in on just to look, if you are travelling on highway 80 through
Berkeley. The guys there are very relaxed and let you browse at your leisure
as long as you keep your druel off the cars.

If you check out Hemmings Motor News at your local bookstore, or at
www.hemmings.com, you'll often see rare/exotic car dealers advertise
DeLoreans as well. If financing is your concern they can accomodate you, but
if your concern is a car serviced/inspected/warranted by someone who knows
what they are looking at stick with the major DMC players already mentioned

Ah, yes, the Test Track Video taken by dear James Espy. (I think).
Anyways, I believe that's in MOV format, from what I remember. MOV format
videos require Apple's Quicktime viewer, which is also available on PC. It's
actually a pretty old format now, AVI and MPGs are usually what digital
videos are on nowadays. Anyways, I suggest looking around for Quicktime, try
www.apple.com, and do a search for it.

Hello to everyone out there in "D" land. This following opinion of mine is
sure to ruffle a few feathers, but more importantly, if I'm any judge of
human nature, it should win me many, many, agreeable fans who think
similarly. I have been a club member for about a year now and a DeLorean
lover since day one. Though I have yet to own one, I am seriously trying to
remedy this. My problem is that all the cars I have inquired about so far
have been grossly exaggerated as far as condition, yet carry showroom price
tags. I am not arguing that the DeLorean can't be made into a great and
reliable car, but that takes lots of time and MONEY. These people who brag
that their cars have few miles and have been stored for long periods of time
should be shot. Show me a car that has been driven and cared for by someone
who stays on top of it's needs, and I'll put my money on it. These so-called
low mileage cars tend to need more attention than their selling price will
allow. Those articles that we all enjoy reading in the magazine and on the
web site, tell of the pitfalls of these cars that have sat for years. You
must remember that since the car appeals to such a small market segment, this
greatly reduces it's potential value. The selling price, combined with the
fix up costs, should not exceed the market value. The seller is turning over
a great piece of machinery to a new and avid owner who is eager to enjoy what
you have tired of. Remember it's only my opinion. Thanks for listening.

be one of the most frequent sellers of D's. According to one of the owners,
they typically sell about 4 per year. Currently have a nice 81 in inventory

If it's not metal, it's not an antenna. All antennas, by definition, are metal.
Where did you find this "key"? Did it come with the car? What sort of lock
does this key fit?
If it has a key to pull it out it's not a DeLorean antenna.
If it's a DeLorean antenna it should be a power antenna.
If it's a DeLorean antenna it should go up when the radio is turned on and down
when the radio is turned off.
If it's a broken DeLorean antenna it may no longer be a power antenna and may
not go up when the radio is turned on or down when the radio is turned off.
If it's a broken DeLorean power antenna there is no key to pull it out.
If it's a broken DeLorean power antenna there are replacements available.
No key required.

I suspect that this antenna, although you don't say so, is mounted in the
right front fender. If so, this is not and was never a power antenna. This
key-lift design was a common aftermarket anti-vandalism antenna in the
mid-late 70's. I installed a few when I was a stereo installer (in a prior
life!). There is no room in the front fender for an antenna motor.
Unfortunately one of DMC's not-so-good ideas was to have the dealers install
an antenna in the front fender to improve radio reception. Yours may be one
of these, or may be a replacement that someone did at a later date. This
was just before they went to the power antenna in the left REAR fender.

Curiously enough, my delorean has a car alarm with relays already wired
into the doors which would allow me to pop either door from my remote
control.
The problem is this: the door opening solenoids used by the alarm
installer were not strong enough to pull the door handle from inside the
door mechanism. I can unlock the doors from my remote control, but I
cannot open the doors as I cannot locate a source for door (or trunk)
release solenoids that are strong enough to do the job.
Could anyone possibly direct me to door solenoids that would be stong
enough and would mount without much trouble inside the doors? I'm
assuming somebody has found one if there is a door opening module for
lockzilla.
If you could reply to the dmc list and to jrobbins@brit.ca personally,
it would be appreciated.

hello dmc friends,
the fan fail light up has rather different meanings in the different
vehicles. in my delorean the small lamp lights up whenever the fans
run, the cooling functioned.
I still have the original fan fail module, but new fan engines.

I have to agree that these prices are just "ball-park" at best. They
clearly do not distinguish between model years (83's are usually more than
81/82's in the same condition) and condition.
Perhaps with the release of the few DeLorean movies our cars will start to
increase in value more rapidly. However this may come with a price. As the
car increases in value, so does insurance, and possibly even parts. So with
all this "Catch 22" and pros/cons, I'm just happy to own a car I love and
enjoy driving.

My A/C is leaking water from the evaporator box all over the passenger carpet. Is ther a way to clean out the drain line without tearing apart the evaporator box? I believe the drain line goes out somewhere under the floor pan but inside
Also has any body had problems with courtesy light fuse blowing? The fuse just blew one day and now I can't find the cause.

I have the same type of antenna. This was a DMC antenna that came out for
the front fender. There was the fixed mast type and the manual retracting
type. You can recess it by hand and then use the key to pull it back up.
The key is only a small pointed piece of metal that you put on a key ring
that you put in the tiny hole in the top of the antenna when it is down.
This allows you to get a grip on the antenna and pull it up. It is not an
ignition or car type key. More like a hand cuff key or something. These
manual retractable antennas were put out as an option for DMC owners with
front fixed mast antennas. Mine was in an original DMC bag when I got it.
They are available from all the major parts suppliers. Its nice to be able
to retract the front fender antenna even if it is by hand. My reception is
the same whether the antenna is up or down so I leave it recessed.

Check with Rob at P.J. Grady. He now sells a remote system (with the DMC
logo) to lock and unlock the DeLorean's doors. This remote unit must work in
conjunction with the LOCKZILLA module.
He has or will have solenoids to open the doors and the trunk. When the
doors are unlocked, and when the solenoids are activated, it will actuate the
latch mechanism to open a door or both doors. The doors will be lifted wide
open by the gas struts. There is a separate unit to unlatch the trunk.
All of this, without touching the car.

Boy oh boy will I second, third and fourth this opinion. I bought my D with
10,000 miles from the original owner several years ago. After spending about
$3,500 to bring it up to date, I now drive it about 2,500 miles a year and it
is a doozie. Drive those babies and they'll purr to you like a kitten.

I have been in this situaiton several times. The drain tube is a small
flexible hose that drains out next to the A/C accumulator - under the
passenger-side fender. Don't scare yourself with visions of ripping out the
evaporator, this *probable* solution will only take five minutes! Just go
by your local "do it yourself" car wash or petrol station and park the car
by the vacuum. Plan ahead - you will probably need to rig something to stop
up one side of the vacuum end, as the tube is quite small compared to your
typical commercial vacuum pipe - shop towels worked for me. Then cram the
A/C drain tube into the nozzle of the vacuum and cough up a few quarters.
You will hear the water being sucked right out! Dry the carpet and you're
set. Just be sure to do this every summer or so or it might come back.
An alternative is to blow compressed air into the drain, but the vacuum
solution worked MUCH better for me. Hope this helps!

I just had the remote door lock opening module installed by PJ Grady along
with the Lockzilla module which you need for this new system. It works
great. The remote door opening and trunk options are not out yet. He is
still working out the final bugs with them. The remote door locks are nice.
There is a remote door lock unit that goes on your keyring like an alarm
remote you see on many cars today. It has the DMC logo and the Zilla logo.
It also has the buttons for the door opening and trunk option for when it
becomes available. I cant wait to add these to my car. Rob showed me the
prototype system he has on his green car and how it opens the doors
automatically. It looks reall cool.

Has Rob come up with an estimated price yet on this new gee wiz novalty
yet how much was the remote lock unit, your typical zilla pricing of $200+
. Don't get me wrong these zilla products have proven to be bullet proof
and I'm glad he has made the effort to develope them . When you consider the
cost of the simple componantry inside, relatively inexpensive that is. Its
sometimes hard to justify the high price , of course I know there is more
to it than that. The units are great I just wish the price was more
affordable. I guess I,m just to used to inexpense asian built electronics,
oh well

Yes, a guy on the Impala SS mailing list recently started selling these
items, too -- see < http://members.zdial.com/~klr94ss/logocaps.htm > for
reference. Apparently the DMC keychains and valve stem caps John is
offering are made by the same company the Impala SS guy gets his from,
because they look identical... the company is called Logocaps -- <
http://www.logonuts.com/prod.html > -- and they can put any logo on items
like valve caps, etc. One of the packages they offer contains that same
wrench/keychain and the same set of four valve stem caps. So it appears
that John is brokering these items, i.e., he has bought them and is
reselling them. Depending on how many sets he ordered, he could give a
pretty good deal on them -- the Impala SS guy gets a darn good discount for
his list!

Contaminated Gas??
I just bought a Delorean in May....the more I restore it the more I want to
throttle the previous owner! (but that's another post).
Today's problem.
Ever since I've gotten it - the car runs really rough when you accelerate.
It also takes more than a few tries to get started then runs rough and
seems to smooth out a bit a few minutes later...but NEVER runs like it
should. The car did sit for a looong time prior to me buying it. (my guess
is anywhere from 6 months to 2 years)
The car improved slightly when we used a fuel injector cleaner in the
gas...All I've done since I've bought it is throw half a tank of premium in
it and the injector cleaner. It's never been driven more than a few miles
since I've brought it home.
Today I got daring and decided to tackle the gas tank.
I opened up the tank and everything looked fine. The fuel pump cover seal
is all warped (needs replacing) but everything else looked fine (fuel pump,
hoses, baffle, etc..). I siphoned out the gas. The gas was a really dark
apple juice color...didn't notice any sludgey deposits...but not sure what
to look for. Especially not sure what to look for on the baffle.
Any thoughts on what I should do now?
Need some help from someone who's been there done that.

fuse to blow. So, after I found it, I just spliced a new connector on and
reconnected it to the light fixture and I've had no problems since!

I recently purchased a turbo 1981 DeLorean VIN # 1460 with 30k miles. I am also a member of the DeLorean Owners Association Member number 5624.
At times the idle speed runs high. This is less prominent with the AC on. Normally the idle speed is around 1000 but at times it runs in the 1200-1300 range and as high as 1500. When I stop at a light or sign I need to rev the accelerato

I have some good news and bad news.
I took the car this morning to Mock Tire to have a spin balance. I made a
terrible mistake and didn't stay with the car. Don't get me wrong, they did
great work and the steering wheel has zero shake in it now, and the price was
just $18. Here is the bad thing though. I got it home, pulled in the
driveway, and shut off the engine. Went inside the house for a few minutes,
came back out to pull the car into the garage. Turned the key and "ka-blam"
or some loud pop came from somewhere in the back accompanied by some smoke
from the engine! The engine turns over, but the engine will not run. HELP!
I called DMC Joe, and he gave me some leads, but I still can't figure it out.
It has something to do with the starter and it's relays and such. I will be
at work tonight until 9, so I will be giving you a call later on.

With the engine turned off have an assistant slightly press and release the
accelerator pedal while you are listening in the engine compartment. You
should hear a mechanical "click" as the pedal is operated. This sound means
the Idle Speed Microswitch is operating normally. If the "click is
intermittent you may have a sticky or miss-adjusted throttle linkage. This
will cause the idle speed problem you have described.
Go to D:05:02 in the Workshop Manual for a complete explanation and
diagrams of the proper operation of this system. If you don't have this

Hi -- am looking into purchasing a D in Missouri, to bring to New Jersey.
Can you recommend any capable DeLorean mechanics in the mid-Missouri area?
The car has been used as a daily driver until last Fall. Has about 40,000
miles estimated... bad odometer. Can be driven to St. Louis or Kansas City,
but I hate to drive halfway across the country at highway speeds in an
un-checked car. Especially since I haven't touched a stick shift in 10
years. (And that was a pretty rough experience in a rented car in England.)
I have driven cross country twice, but that was in a Neon, with a co-driver.
Anything in particular I should have the mechanic take a look at? Any
particular hazards to avoid? Any other comments? Like, am I crazy? Maybe!
I figure I'll leave the car with the mechanic to work on then fly back a few

I don't fully agree. Or, in other words there's an exception to every
rule!! My wife and I just bought an 81 with just 3500 miles on it (speedo
works and the rest of the car confirms the low mileage). The previous owner
stored it VERY well and the ONLY thing we have had to do the car
mechanically is to replace the fuel pump after I inadvertantly ran the car
out of gas.
Now, I'm not disagreeing with you altogether. A constantly driven car will
usually be a better, more reliable car to buy. But there are exceptions!

Then how would you explain that those "low mileage" D's ALWAYS
command a higher price? Buyers that want top notch cars know that
the "low milers" may indeed require some extra attention at first,
but the serious buyer/enthusiast also knows that they are by far the
best value in the long run. A low mileage car doesn't automatically
mean that the car has been just "sitting" for nearly 20 years. I
drive mine regularly and I CAN authenticate the mileage of 9,850.
That is, on average, roughly two outings a month at about 25 miles
each. That is hardly sitting. I am not "bragging" about the low
mileage, it's just happens to be a fact! She still "purrs like a
kitten" the first time and every time. I also have a boat of about
the same vintage that was purchased new about the same time. I would
say that the boat has even fewer hours on it than the DeLorean does
primarily because it's a seasonal toy and only gets "driven" during
3 or 4 months of the year, and because of my work schedule. She also
"purrs like a kitten" the first time and every time and, BTW, she
commands an exceptionally high marine survey rating (translates to
value) primarily because of the exceptionally low "mileage". I have
seen cars and boats of the same vintage that are absolute rags and
essentially have NO value. Since 1995 I have donated 3 vehicles
(all newer than my DeLorean) to the National Kidney Foundation because
they had more value to me as a tax deduction than they did book value
which was essentially zero. An exception to this is the DeLorean that
will always retain a healthy residual value even if as nothing more than
a "parts car", even if would cost more to restore it than its value after
restoration. That is to say that a ragged out, worn out DeLorean still
has many hard-to-find and valuable parts that are not subject to wear
or abuse. Because of that, the worst of abused DeLoreans (short of
totaled or burned-out) are worth at least several thousand dollars.
That's the low end. The ones you loath are at the other end, and as
long as I remain a DeLorean owner that's where I want to be.

Most exotic, collector cars and cars in general are costly in maintenance.
The DeLorean is not too expensive to keep up with in the maintenance or the
repair.
Remember the DeLorean was in production for three years. There were many
problems that haunted the car. Many of these problems has or are being
resolved by DeLorean owners and connoisseurs like Rob from PJ Grady with his
production of the ZILLA's products. This is only one of his product line
that he is manufacturing in resolving the electrical or any other weaknesses
of the DeLorean motorcar. There are several other people and companies out
there that is offering services and products that they developed to help the
DeLorean motorcar and the marque alive. The question is the cost of the
materials used? You are right. Materials in "this" case, it is cheap. I do
believed that time in researching, experimenting and developing is a cost
factor. Their time and "know how" should be compensated for such an
excellent product. There is also the cost of insurance for "product
liability" that goes along with the product -- the other hidden cost factor
too.
DON'T BE WIRED FOR FIRE, OR LEARN BY BURN!
Their products and know how will help keep the DeLorean motorcars in tip top
operation and the prevention of other problems that may arise. I believe if
one can afford it, this is the way to go. This is the price to pay to
"remedy" these problems of the DeLorean. It is a "small price" to pay for
the enjoyment. We all enjoy owning the DeLorean motorcar. If we don't, we
will get rid of it? Get stuck once and the price to pay
is................................You get the picture? :-( :-( :-(
Let me share one other product that he has in the works. I saw it and I want
it at the time when I was having the remote installed in my DeLorean three
weeks ago. It was not available then, maybe it is now. This product is a
STAINLESS STEEL GEAR ANGLE DRIVE. This is another major weakness of the
DeLorean. In the last three and a half years I have driven my DeLorean over
45,000 miles and I have replaced "two" angle drive units in my DeLorean. The
price to replace another original drive is not the problem. The time and the
aggravation to get to Rob's place and to get an appointment is the problem.
I am looking for the opportunity to replace this "other " Archille's Heel in
the DeLorean. Like his other product's, I know he has engineered and will
produce a good product so I am looking forward for a replacement unit. Now
is this the worth the fine tea and china? I think so.
If anyone out there can produce something "cheaper in price" that is worth
while, please let us know. We too can line your pockets to keep the DeLorean
motorcar alive and running. :-) :-) :-)

Yes Rob spends alot of time and money to develop the products. The new
system works nice. The Lockzilla module has now been fitted with a plug for
the new door unlock module. So if you buy a Lockzilla, which you need for
this system anyway, then you can plug it right in. The module for remote
unlocking of the doors which comes with two key ring remotes is 159.00 The
remote door opening add on will be higher as it involves mecagnisms inside
the door to open them by remote. I am not sure of the price but give Rob a

I have a power antenna located in the engine compartment. The antenna is retractable (at least it use to be).
I do not hear the antenna motor running when I turn off the radio.
I understand there may be a relay switch somewhere. Does anyone know where the relay swith is located ? I looked behind the drivers seat to no avail.
Could this be a burnt out fuse?

My two cents worth (for which you have to pay even less): A well maintained
vehicle with any amount of miles can be a great "runner". In my case, I
drove mine for thirteen years as a daily driver, averaging probably over 12K
per year. Since early 93, while I was working overseas, it was only driven
once or twice a year for, maybe, 2-3000 miles a year. Now that I am back, I
am taking it out a couple of times a week, looking for those back country
roads where one can really enjoy the handling of the machine. Since my
return to the states in May, I can honestly say that the car is running
better and better every time I take it out. With 150,000+ miles on it, it
is still the best driving D I have ever been in, with the possible exception
of #502, the twin-turbo prototype. Admitedly, the engine is not quite
stock, having been massaged gently by Stephen Wynn: ported and polished
heads, "hot rod" valve job, and a slightly higher lift cam, producing an
estimated 185 HP. Although still normally aspirated, I'm told it is faster
than most turbos on the road and remains a very pleasant driver in stop and
go traffic.
We are fortunate to own an "exotic" that really doesn't cost an arm and a
leg to maintain and repair (as long as you don't bend the left front
fender). So, drive the things and enjoy them. There are much better
"investments" out there, in spite of the recent performance of the stock
markets. Paying a high premium for a "low milage" car is false ecomomics,
and personally, as much as I appreciate the lasting beauty of the design, I
get tired of just looking at them. I've got to get in it and drive it and
drive it hard. That's what it's made for. If something breaks, I know that
I can fix it without breaking the bank.

Gentlemen: Ladies too:
I still don't own a D, but I own/have owned many classic/special interest
cars over the last 25 years. Believe me Parts and Up grades for the
DeLorean are cheap in comparison. To be honest, I am surprised at the low
prices for nice D's I have seen. My Amphicar transmission costs $2700
to $3800, if you can get one!! This Forum is also incredible... I do not
know this guy DMC Joe, but he is an invaluable asset obviously dedicated to
the DeLorean, as are many others. You Folks have a Good thing going
here.....keep it up!

How about, heavy-pocketed buyers incorrectly applying a late model vehicle
purchasing standard to an older collector vehicle? Mileage is a fine way to
evaluate a '96 Volvo, but condition, aesthetic AND mechanical is what
determines how good a collector vehicle really is. If I'm looking for
asomething I plan to actually drive, then I want one that has been
"broken-in", driven, AND maintained. It's proven itself.
(I'll relate a story from a Viet Nam veteran: Periodically, the army would
issue/offer new m-16 rifles to the soldiers. Some would trade in their old
ones for new ones, but the soldiers who knew their rifles and maintained them
well, would always keep their old ones. The reason? The new rifles were
prone to jamb at the worst moments. The older, broken-in and maintained
ones, operated reliably.)
A higher price doesn't really mean that something is better or that you're
getting more, but unfortunately many people have this perception. Finally,
have you ever wondered why shops that do brake jobs typically charge more for
disc brakes than drum? If you've done brakes yourself, you know what I'm
talking about. I dare you to find any mechanic that would rather do drum
brakes than disc!

I guess I should have been more specific.
I have a power antenna located in the engine compartment. The antenna is
retractable (at least it use to be).
I do not hear the antenna motor running when I turn off the radio.
I understand there may be a relay switch somewhere. Does anyone know where
the relay swith is located ? I looked behind the drivers seat to no avail.
Could this be a burnt out fuse?

As I have been putting my 2cents in for a long time,I would like to say a
little about my history with gullwing cars,I have owned gullwing cars since
1980,being as my first gullwing was a Bricklin sv-1(which I still own, see a
pic on the bricklin home vin#1024 page, members section)well happy as all
heck enjoying my "B" as at the time Deloreans were not around yet,people
thought it was a Ferarri ,then about a year after I got my "B" I saw my first
Delorean,at $32,000 I knew at the time they were out of my price range,but as
luck would have it I happened to go to a Salvage yard,and lo and behold I
spotted my first Delorean that I was to own(Nov 1981)I bought it,and BOYoBOY
did I ever buy myself a BIG PROJECT car if you have ever seen a boat that has
been underwater for any length of time that was my "D" barnacles
everywhere,needless to say the motor was frozen solid,took me two months to
scrape off the barnacles,then I removed the ss panels off the car,mind you I
was restoring this "D" without any kind of books and there wasn't any
Delorean support to be had anywhere,but I went ahead and dissembled,the
car,had to teach myself as I was going along,pulled the drivetrain out,doors
ect,then when I got to the black body
that's when I found out it was a one piece fiberglass body,took me a while to
figure how to lift the body off the frame with a cherry picker,but I did,and
when I got down to the frame
WOW,the frame was a little dirty,but after scraping off what ever barnacles
were on the frame(found a couple baby starfish),the Frame was a perfect
testament to what John Delorean said,the frame was and is as perfect as if it
rolled down the assembly line,a beautiful lite blue work of art and the black
body came out clean as a whistle(after removing every last nut and bolt
attached to the black body)about the same time I picked up vin5520
(2,200miles)to use to restore the underwater "D" ,the interior was trash,as
salt water was not to kind to the electronics,but the complete wiring system
was trashed,the only parts used were the frame,black body,and SS panels,and
tires and wheels as those were unaffected by salt water,by the way this
"D"was supposed to have been stolen in Bridgeport Conn and dumped in the
Bridgeport harbor,BUT when I took the the Drivers seat out I found the
Ignition Switch
with the key STILL in it,WHY would a car thief break off a ignition switch if
the key was still in it,Insurance fraud maybe? Anyway I was using everything
out of vin 5520
including all the wiring and electronics,Boy have I learned a lot about
"D"s,again those were my beginnings with Deloreans,since then,I have restored
other "D"s and also other Bricklins,Fiero GTs and Corvettes,some which I
still have,anybody else out there have a rich history with Gullwing
restorations?

No, this is not a Delorean "I need help fixing something" story. Actually I
am about to purchase my second Delorean, however it is located somewhere
around Pittsburgh, PA. I live in New York (about 20 minutes from PJ Grady's
shop).
My problem is as follows: I need someone to look at this Delorean to let me
know if it is a sound purchase. I would love a Rob Grady or DMC Joe type to
be there poking and prodding around, but realize this is not going to happen.
So, I ask you my fellow Delorean owners and fans, any suggestions? The cost
factor is not important, I am more concerned about making sure the car is as
good as it looks and sounds. The seller has been terrific, but we all know
that a missed problem could be a costly one, so I want to know about it ahead
of time.
Any ideas or stories about "How I purchased my Delorean from another state"

are six months old, I'm inclined to believe that my water pump has failed.

many beers will it require?

Dear DML,
Due to being a new participant in the DML as well as being an avid
hopeful in owning my own DeLorean i've got to do my research.
Almost as amazing as finding out the DeLorean was a real car when I was
a kid was finding out that the engines were a Volvo Renault Peugot mix!
I mean wow! Well my joy was short lived when I found out that they
were a huge flop in regards to reliability, performance and endurance.
One person I talked to said that the "lubricating system was inadeuate
and therefore allowed the engine to 'eat' camshafts." is this true?
say it aint so... and if this is (dare I say it!) TRUE, what can be
done to ammend the situation. Have thiongs like engine revamps gone
on, or engine replacement?
Plus does anyone know of a dual turbo D? and where I can get specs for
ALL Deloreans regarding engine performance...
Any info for the above would greatly be appreciated!

Dear DML, (again)
Well more inquisitiveness has lead to the question about frame rust.
Yes I know about the epoxy resin that the frame was once dipped into to
prevent this very problem. However I mean to ask about traditional
maintenance of the frame such as things like yearly (or more) oil
sprayings with a specially formulated rust inhibitor such as Crown or
Rust Check. Is this a feasible (and yes I know its ugly) solution?
I mean after all, I've been doing it to my Volvo 240 for Eighteen years
and the ALL PLAIN STEEL body is the only thing that seems to be
lasting! So shouldn't it work?

P.s. I found out from the archive that the D engine produces about 100
hp or 134 ft. lbs o' torque, roughl;y the same as my inline four on my
Volvo.

I just bought a 81 5-speed with 25K. I've looked at quite a few and
this one seems pretty solid..
The one problem is the RPM not working. Its starts bouncing when I turn
the air on. And when the air is off it doesn't work???? Any ideas?

shop.

Not that I'm afraid of automotive work, necessarily. It's just that this is
a 20-year-old car, and every time I take off a part to work on it, I find
another underneath that needs attention. I did this when I first got the
car, and things quickly spiraled out of control, which is why it ended up
with Stephen Wynne. So I think if I actually started to work on this thing,
I'd end up doing a frame-off restoration. :-)

a kit that contains all of the hidden hoses and gaskets to reseal
the upper coolant circulation system on the engine. The point it,
Don't do JUST the water pump or JUST the hoses. Do everything
at once because you don't want to have to dig in there again. NOW,
its not a hard job but you do have to disasemble everything on top
of that engine down to the block and heads. I have did it about 3 or 4
times on different cars including my own. ALSO, if you have a 5 speed
car, this is a GREAT time to change your clutch slave cylinder. After
that intake manifold is off, its EASY to do. MUCH easier than changing
it from under the car.

Hey everybody. I'm new to this list. First off, I'll tell you my story of
how I found my love for DeLoreans. When I was about 10 or 11, my dad took me
to a farm show at the Mark of the Quad-Cities. He is an engineer and really
interested in machinery such as that. I wanted to go just to see the inside
of the new arena, so I, nor my Dad found the show very exciting. We decided
to walk around the almost empty parking lot and we came across a DeLorean. I
was suprised. I had always loved the Back to the Future movies, but I never
realized that a DeLorean was a real thing. I was amazed to know that this
car was real. The gull-wing doors and the over all shape. It was Godly.
Well then I became obsessed the car. I never actually saw one again until
just 2 weeks ago. I saw it driving down the road in my hometown of
Bettendorf, IA. I freaked out and almost started following it. I decided
that wouldn't be a good idea though. My obsession with the car was rekindled
(sp?) by that brief meeting. Money is low over here being 17 years old, but
I can assure you that I will own a DeLorean within the next 13 years. Heh,
how's that for a deadline.
Anyway, I was wondering if anybody on this list was from the Quad-City area?
If so, write me back. If anybody would be so kind as to let me give their
DeLorean a spin (I'd of course pay for such honor) let me know.

well, it happend. my Delorean won't start for the first time with me
as owner. i was driving it and noticed that the tackometer was jumping
but the engine wouldnt over rev or anything. i noticed that when i put
my brights on, the tack would go back to normal but when i released the
tack would jump again. i decided to park it in the garage and come
back to it later. about 4 hours later i went to go take it for another
spin and NO power...nothing. nothing would turn over, nothing happend.
so i tried to jump start it. i got the engine to turn over but not
start. so i put a battery charger on the and left for a while. a
couple hours passed and i thought maybe it will start now. it turned
over a couple times but no start. then i tried to turn it over again
and it doesnt even do that...it just "ticks" really fast. like the
sound of the starter or something. can anybody tell me what to do? is
it just a bad battery or is it more than that? thanks for the help

No, it isn't.
The Delorean's PRV-6 (or B28F as Volvo calls it) is a bit flat in the
performance department - it only makes 130HP stock. However, it is an
extremely reliable and efficient engine. The engine does *not* eat
camshafts. There was a PRV-6 variant, the B27F, which was the predecessor
to the B28F used in the DeLorean. It is much less reliable and may be
where the confusion comes from.
The PRV will last forever - some of them have over 200,000 miles on them -
if it is well maintained. The secret to long PRV life is to change the
oil regularly and not overheat it.

Yes, engine swaps are popular, but typically just to improve performance,
or because something very bad (fire, etc.) happened to the original one.

The stock DeLorean has a 130HP 2.85L PRV. Apparently (there was just a
message about this yesterday) Steve Wynne at DMC-Houston has some
modifications, including a performance camshaft, that reportedly raises
the HP output to around 180HP, naturally aspirated. There is also a
bolt-on twin turbo kit (sold by Turbo Manifold, whose contact information
I don't have) which raises output to approximately the same level with no
internal engine modifications. I suppose if you combined the two you
could get over 200HP.
As far as frame rust - yes, it's a problem, but it is frequently not a
terminal problem. I haven't heard of trying to clean the frame or
otherwise maintain it to prevent rust, possibly because so many of the
rust prone areas are impossible to get to. Fortunately there are
replacement factory frames (complete with epoxy) available, and there is
also a stainless steel frame available from www.pearce-design.com.

There is a DeLorean on display at the Birdwood National Auto Museum in
South Australia. I believe it's a 1981 model. I will post the cars'
particulars (VIN, etc) to the DML in the next few days or so. I'm not sure
whether the 'D' is privately owned or belongs to the museum, which I
believe, is run by the South Australian government.
Unfortunately, visiting the museum's web site

Spent the weekend cleaning, re-assembling the fuel tank, new fuel filter etc.. so these are not the culprit.

Get or borrow a coolant pressure tester. Hook it up and put 15 psi on the system. You will probably start seeing coolant coming out before you get up to 15 psi. This will tell you where the leak is. After you fix where the leak, pressure
