Would anyone have an answer to the hand brake light which flashes
intermittently when the brake lever is off. I have checked the switch (and
archives) and cannot resolve the problem. I suspect it might be a problem
not associated with the switch. An immediate fix is to unplug the wire
from the switch.

The only connection I kow that JZD/DMC has with Mazda was C.R. Brown.
C.R. was the president of the North American arm of DMC, and he came to
DELOREAN MOTOR COMPANYafter working as the president of Mazda USA. C.R.
was responsible for setting up Mazda in the US.
Also, there was some early thought about putting the Wankel motor into
the DeLorean. As best as I can recollect, the gas crisis of the
mid-seventies (when the DeLorean was in embroynic form) put the end to
that.

brake is active, but also that the brake fluid level is low. I'd suggest
checking your brake fluid and/or the float in the top of the resevoir.

I can't say what that means as i don't have a wiring diagram available at
moment. The previous suggestions may help though...

Scott,
The best thing to prevent mildew is too keep the inside of the car aired out
and to keep a lot of moisture from being trapped in it. If you have cloth
seats you can check the cleaning aisle of your local grocery store and they
should have something for it. If you have leather seats you can mix bleach
and water(make sure you mix them half and half) and that should take the
mildew off.

Unplug the switch, if the lamp goes out completely the problem is in the

Go to your local hardware store or home center and purchase a container of
Damp-Rid. I may be slightly off with the brand name but it is a moisture
absorbing product designed for damp environments. Works great !

Go to the store and purchase several small pans, ex: kitty litter pans..
Fill these pans with charcoal and sit them inside the car in moisture prone
areas.
The moisture is absorbed into the charcoal, and when the charcoal becomes
too moist simply
heat it in an oven to dry it. Very cheap, works perfectly...

Thank you to all who responded to my problem with being locked out of my trunk!
Thanks for all the suggestions. I tried the easy ones first, but DMC JOE had it nailed.
Once on a lift the drivers tire didn't even have to be removed, above the brake cylinder
by pushing the rubber plug up access to the trunk was made and with a long piece of wire I
was able to see the lock mechanism . Grabbed it and what la! The trunk was
opened.
HEARS A GREAT TIP FOR ALL : TO AVOID THIS PROBLEM ,RUN A WIRE
FROM THE BOTTOM OF THE LOCK MECHANISM TO THE RUBBER PLUG AT THE BOTTOM OF THE TRUNK. THIS WAY
SHOULD YOUR TRUNK CABLE EVER COME LOSE , ALL YOU HAVE TO DO IS POP THE PLUG , AND GRAB THE
WIRE TO RELEASE THE TRUNK. IT MIGHT SEEM A LITTLE EXCESSIVE BUT IT BEATS RUNNING OUT OF GAS
GETTING THE DELOREAN TOWED TO A SERVICE STATION THEN SPENDING AN HOUR TRYING TO FISH FOR THE

If you really what to get confused, visit the Harod's autombile museum
in Reno. They have a PPG pace car from the 80's. The door PERFECTLY
match those of the DeLorean! Most of the cabin body also matches the
DeLorean. Was this a DeLorean made into the race car. It sure look
like it to me!!!

This is a very bad thing. Once mold spore have grown and rooted they are
there permanently. You must treat the seats with a disinfectant or they
will rot. A 20 % bleach solution, left on for about 5 minutes and then
rinsed and FORCED dry should help.

My experience has been that the brake cables loose their lubrication
over time. Remove these from the rear brakes and the hrake handle and
relub them. Then when the brake handle is down the light will go off.
I also found a broken return spring on one. This could also be your
problem. The spring is not visible without disassembly.

Hi all!
My name is Todd Z. from Long Island, New York.
A few short years ago I had a 1981 Delorean (a/t, gray interior, mint inside
and out- no droopy doors or seats that looked like a pack of wolves ran
through). This car had less than 4,000 miles and was just plain sweet. After
having my Delorean for almost 2 years...I had to sell it reluctantly, due to
marriage....that is I was reluctant to sell the car, not marry!
Now it is about 3 years later and I've got the fever. I am eager to get back
into a Delorean...any year...automatic...fully updated and mechanically
sound....interior gray preferred...ultra clean- not necessarily show quality,
but something for the fussy nit-picker.
I don't live far from Rob Grady (20 minutes or so)...he is looking for one
for me at the moment, but I would like to see as much of what is available as
there is...soooooo, anyone out there selling or know where one is for sale? I
have been following the groups e-mails for a little while and I realize that
there is a sort of hysteria about "commercial" stuff. I hope this does not
violate any rules, I just want some fellow DMC owners and those who want to
be owners, to point me in the right direction.
I look forward to participating in this group in the future, it looks like it
is a lot of fun as well as helpful. Thanks everyone!

system is controlled by vacuum actuators. The actuators are
controlled by the mode switch in the dash. There is a portion of
the switch that is sealed with a silicone grease that eventually
dries out and causes erratic operation of the ventilation system.

Check to be sure that one end of vacuum hose #2 (brown stripe) is plugged
into the number 2 receptacle on the vacuum plug at the rear of the mode
switch and the other end is connected to the upper actuator at the lower
left (driver footwell) of the main AC duct. Refer to 7/3/0 in the Parts
Manual.

My stock D have an unusual symptom recently. It would hunt the idle
speed until the car warmed up.
This weekend the RPM relayed died and the car had to be towed home.
I had a spare relay and the car is just fine now. The idle speed at
start up is also steady.
This idle speed hunting appears to have been an early warning sign of
emmint RPM relay failure.
Just thought the list members would like to know.

Hello,
I'm not sure what shade to paint it, but there's a reason for the
blue paint..
I bought the set of DeLorean Models (BTTF 1, 2, 3) and I decided to paint the
Part 1 one as an experiment to make it black.. At first I tried grey, but
since the seats etc are already grey by default that would be a little
stupid. -=]
When I painted it black and assembled it, I couldn't see a thing cause the
underside of the roof is reflective, and the inside was pitch black.. well,
almost.
If you've seen pictures of the professionally painted models, you'll see how
nice the blue paint looks..
This is my own opinion, and I used glossy black, I think maybe if you use
flat black/grey you might get a different view.

Before the flood of email starts asking me about owners manuals and pouches
- all we have are COPIES of the 1982 version of the owners manual. There
are very few technical differences between the 1981 and 1982 manuals, but
many design/cosmetic ones.
When we DO run across original manuals, they are generally used and we put
them on eBay...I have an 81 and and 82 manual that we be put up there
sometime this or next week.

Hi everyone
Just to let you know I just recieved my keys from Lee Seiler last week,
The're absolutely wonderful!!! We all need too thank Lee For seeing this
project through and dedicating so much of his not-so-sparetime to this and
many other projects he has going that benefit us. I f it wasn't for Lee I
wouldn't have an original type key for my car. Because when I bought my car
the original owner hadn't driven the car for 2yrs. and somehow lost the
original keys and had to have a locksmith make a key from an Ilco x29 key
blank.
As for the keys the're exact copies of the originals including a slight flaw
that all the originals have , according to Lee. Their is one improvement,
these key blanks are brass not steel, the steel originals tended to rust and
wear-out the lock mechanizisms.

The original boot has a plastic frame that becomes brittle as it ages. It
is likely that while your car was being serviced it was removed and broke.
New boots with metal frames are available from DeLorean parts suppliers.

Just got my car back from the shop. The gear shift boot now moves forward
and backward when I shift into the respective gears. When the boot moves
forward it leaves a gap at the point where the boot base normally covered
the console. Does anyone know what would cause the boot to move and how I
can fix the problem? The boot has never moved before! Thanks.

I've been reading the DMC news for several months religiously and
noticed a
pervasive absence of women writing in or women owners of Deloreans.
Would the moderators be able to provide any stats with the ratio of men
to women on the list or men to women owner ratios?
My impression is that the Delorean is a very male oriented car, women
seam to
love the car also (lots of supportive wife's out there like mine)
but ownership seams almost exclusively male dominated.

Hi Robert,
The blue choice stipulated by the kit instructions will be due to them
sourcing the colour from a couple of interior shots I have seen that do give
off a deceptive blue hue. The hue is an illusion. All 6-7 DMC-12's
modified with all the time circuits had the grey interiors.
If you have access to the Tamiya acrylics I recommend the light grey and the
one up also from that. Mix a little of each grey to match the interior.
The seats already are grey plastic, but the sheen is not leather like, so
paint all the relevant trim with your correct tone of grey. Then mix a
slightly darker wash and brush that on. Carefully wipe the wash so it only
remains along the stitch lines etc which will bring out the detail in the
seats and other fittings.
For sourcing the DMC grey interior I would recommend Travis' webpage. In my
opinion it is one of the best DMC websites as for one he has used his own
pictures. It has professional composed look and also has some excellent
shots of his light grey interior. The link is:-

I know that it sounds stupid to paint the interior with "Intermekdiate Blue"
I am half way through with my second BTTF model, but the Intermediate Blue
is really an off shade of grey (Basically grey with a tint of blue). I
have a DeLorean with a grey interior, and the color is almost an exact
match.

I'd agree that it's primarily a male audience. As a long time subscriber I
recall a few female posters, but not more than a few. Since all I can see is

We have many female owners in our database. The fact is that many of them
are not very technically oriented therefore they may not feel comfortable
with a lot of "tech talk". We know there are ladies out there who are

Don't be fooled, there are lots of female DeLorean owners, they just do
more listening and less talking.

A large number of the owners listed in the DeLorean Owners Directory are
couples, listed with the mens name first (Patty and Mike Substelny are
exceptions). There are a few women, but with some of the names it's hard
to tell. The DeLorean is definitely NOT just a guy car.
About the DOD:
I'm still getting the additions from over the last year cleaned up. I'll
send a confirmation notice out to everyone who has submitted their info
from the last few weeks on. We'll let the owners know how to acquire a
copy of the DOD when we get that part worked out.

I will leave the key question for other list members. All of the original
rear lenses are amber, cars that are stored outdoors may suffer from sun
fading which changes the color to yellow. I believe we have a couple of
these sitting on our used parts shelf. Be aware that some states consider

huffer, boy was I disappointed to find the center ducts not blowing that

A few of you will remember an issue surrounding a certain BBCTV presenter by the name of
Quentin Wilson - of a book with his name on it woefully misrepresenting the DeLorean.
I got a mail today from a fellow UK club member who I have yet to have the pleasure of meeting
in person, and who is also a member of the DML - Chris Hawes. I hope you don't mind me pasting

Donald,
My car D use to be black but the paint started to peel so I stripped it off.
All it took was a gallon of Jasco paint remover and about half a day's time.
The stainless finish was fine underneath, the only real problem was the fact
that I used a razor blade to scrape the paint off and so I had some
inadvertant scratches to buff out. Maybe a softer scraper would have been a
better choice, perhaps wood or plastic as long as you clean it frequently
(Methylene Chloride is the active ingredient in Jasco and it melts a lot of
plastics). The key is take your time.

bag, but that is the only modification (why this was done, I have no idea). The
car is tested as crashing head-on into a solid wall. Angles include: Outside
looking at the full drivers side, and a separate camera for the full passenger
side. I'm not sure if there is an over head shot, however, there are cameras
mounted inside of the car to capture the crash from the perspective of the
driver and passenger. And of course there is a slo-mo replay. This is what I was

another thing, i recently got my front shocks replaced and i just
noticed that when i turn right kinda hard that it makes a banging
noise....only sometimes, not all. any insight would be great

You'll have to buy the key blanks from lee seiler or one of the major parts
suppliers.
Keys from lee are $20 + sh for 2 From the other guys I have no idea.
Then take them to your local locksmith to have them cut . Mine were $5 each
Your yellow tailliight used to be the standard DOT amber and for some reason
has faded .I,But not the rightt happened to my left lens also, but not the
right lens. This appears to be common when the cars are stored out side
unprotected from UV rays.
Please explain more about your TV show . What do mean by Skate show ,
ice,roller,inline,board. How would a delorean fit in with that format?

Buy one thats not painted . The're readily avaliable. You never know what
is under the paint and yes it would be a very big job. Rob Grady of PJ
Grady's owns a beautiful green delorean that he painted only because the
stainless was beyond repair.

If the car's already painted, best to leave it that way. Mine was painted by
a previous owner and needed to be repainted so I stripped the hood just to
get a look at the stainless. It was a big job. The flat areas aren't so
bad, but when you get to corners and recesses, it gets tough. Also, if the
stainless was sanded prior to primering, you may have deep scratches that may
be difficult or impossible to remove.

(whether as standard or an option I do not know), but at the time there
were no manufacturers capable of supplying enough volume.
So it would be reasonable that they would use an air bag in some of the
crash testing.

Until I subscribed to the DML I thought that poor flow through the center vents was normal.
In an early issue I learnred that it is NOT normal, but it is common. There are two soft
polymer boots behind the dash that connect the ductwork to the center vents. Frequently these
boots will slip backwards and collapse, blowing that delicious cool air onto your radio
instead of you.
You may not have to disassemble the dash to fix this! Just pop the vent deflectors out of
their sockets. Using a flashlight and some long tools (e.g. screwdrivers, long tweezers) you
might be able to put these boots back in place by reaching through the vents. It worked for
me.

The fuel accumulator replacement is a labor intensive procedure even if you
have done it several times; here's a tip. Get the entire car up in the air
i.e.: four jack stands on all for corners. Have a drain pan ready to catch
the quart or so of gas that will leak out of the accumulator and adjoining
fuel lines. Good luck.

Eric - Another comment on accumulator replacement - make sure you remove the
small tray at the back of the console, and then the plastic cover plate
under that. That is where you can hold the back of the fuel line fitting
while you detach it from underneath. If you don't do this you WILL kink the
fuel line. At that point, you'll realize that the line is run in-between the
frame and the body. Not a pretty thought.

This is the full color "Presenting America's Most Talked About Car!" poster that dealers used in early DeLorean promotions. It shows a
DeLorean smashing through a collage of true newspaper headlines and magazine covers which lead up to the DeLorean's debut. As far as I
know this poster was never offered to the public by the original DMC. Because they are so large these posters are difficult to store;
undoubtedly most have been destroyed by now.
I have one of these posters. It is beautiful, rare, and enormous. I spent over $300 to have mine professionally mounted in a stainless &
glass frame. It was well worth the cost to avoid putting nail holes through my poster.
Warning: it takes a large wall to display this huge poster properly.
As for other posters: the DOA has a nice one at its website, www.delorean-owners.org This poster shows the DeLorean with its doors up.
In the old days James Espey used to have another poster at the DMC News site. I do not know what happened to these. I have seen other
DeLorean posters, but I don't know where to get them.

I saw this poster in Ohio last year when I was in the warehouse. It is
a nice poster, but it looked as if they had quite a few of them. It was
the first, and last time I had seen it so I guess it is "rare".
They were selling them for like $20 I think. I had considered buying
one, but $20 seemed like a lot for a poster. In retrospect, I should
have bought it.
There are a number of interesting items on Ebay being sold by DMC
Houston.

Erik,
Maybe I was just lucky but,....it only took me 2 hours to change out the
accumulator. Some have taken 6 hours or longer.
The "trick" that I found was to release the hard tube fitting first.
This is the one that goes to the 90degree elbow on the accumulator. I
used a 17mm tube nut wrench for this. The handle was long enough that I
could get an extension (vice grips) on it to get the leverage to break
it loose. Once this was done, I undid the four bolts in the bracket &
with a little wiggling (of the accumulator) you can pull the entire
assembly down through the access hole. It does clear with all hoses
connected. At this point you can remove the bottom hose with the hose
clamp and then the fitting on the top hose. Be aware that the bottom
hose is the return line to the fuel tank and is full of fuel. Have a
container ready to catch about a quart of gasoline.
When you are ready to reinstall the accumulator, reattach the hoses.
The "trick" here is that the hoses were twisted so that they didn't kink
and close off fuel flow. What you have to do is reinstall them with the
twist. You'll be able to see pretty quickly just what direction & how
much twist you have to put in when you start to reposition the
accumulator.

One more thought - My comment about holding the back of the fitting from

My Delorean was originally painted Imron black. I had to use aircraft
paint remover to get rid of the paint. Nasty stuff. However, with a D
you can used wire brushes to speed up the removal. It was actually
easier than other paint removal jobs on regular cars.

Air bags were available at the time DeLorean was producing the car.
However, since they were not mandatory (and with the Reagan
administration killing the requirement for such), John did not install
them.
The parts for air bags WERE available and were mass produced starting in
1974. I have three airbag cars from the 70s and they are better air
bags than in cars today.

that is "flashing" - fan clutch error. I start my car weekly and drive it
once a fortnight. This last drive I used the A/C and it would come on
intermitantly.
I am not a mechanic, can the clutch issue be repaired by Volvo - any
estimate on cost ??
Ps. I also need repair suggestions for an inoperative window (the motor
seems good -could the arm be broken) I hear they were plastic.

I own the copyright and trade secrets to my version of the stock scale models
that I am selling.
I am unclear why Mr. Haws has raised the issue of or is speculating about
copyrights
in the scale models on the DML. I have an arrangement with Steve Wynne with
regards to his interest in the DMC as well as JZD.
I have directly corresponded with JZD and so far as my attorneys are

The bad news is that the Esprit drivetrain (besides being really
expensive) is set up for mid-engine; the transmission won't work. As with
all V8 conversions, take measurements first; it may not fit. As with all
turbo conversions, figure out something to do with the intercoolers
(doesn't Lotus use ram-scoops to supply the IC's?) If the bolt pattern is
the same that will improve matters tremendously. Does anyone know if any
other current engines share that bolt pattern?

Nobody really knows. Conventional wisdom is about 300ft.lbs for the
5-speed and about 200 for the auto. I don't think anyone's ever built a
DeLorean with more than 300HP, so "here there be dragons."

I have been trying to find out which Renault gearbox was fitted to the
Delorean.
I know that the R-1 albiet reversed roatation is fitted to the latest
300+bhp twin-turbo V8 Lotus Espirit the DMC-12's only living relation. By
the way Lotus would want ú10000 ($15000) for the complete engine as it
should fit straight into the DMC-12 they are almost twins.
I have heard that an R-30 is fitted to the DMC-12 and would like to know
that if this is the case then what are its horsepower/torque limits?
You are probably thinking, why not ask Renault? Well I tried them but they
do not know anything about there OWN transmissions!
So here I am, is there anyone on the list who has the knowledge to deconfuse
me?

Actually, Don Steger (Delorean Motor Center) has, in his shop, a DMC with an
approximately 500hp Intercooled Buick Grand National Turbo in it. It uses a
DeLorean manual transmission with a custom-made bellhousing welded up from
the original and a Buick part. This car does tend to eat transmissions,
though. When I was there a few months ago the trans was in pieces.

Sounds like you are talking about the "Fan Fail" light.
Your fan relays have not been updated. You can find the fix in the back

boot-frame of Polycarbonate (a virtually unbreakable plastic). It is clear,

The light you're referring to is the "cooling fan fail" light. It has
nothing to do with the A/C clutch. When the cooling fans that sit behind the
radiator cycle on and off, the cooling fan fail light will illuminate for a
few seconds. If it stays on continually, you have a problem and need to
watch your temperature gauge very carefully.

Paul,
It sounds as if your DeLorean still has the factory installed Fan Fail
module. The normal operation of this cooling fan control device is to turn
on the Fan Fail lamp for 1 second whenever the cooling fans begin
operation.
When any of the three AC settings are selected the fans will turn on
whenever the compressor cycles. This normally takes place about every 7 to
10 seconds.
Therefor the answer to your question is that it is normal for the Fan Fail
light to flash intermittently whenever the AC is switched on.
If the lamp flashes with the AC switched off you have another problem that
may be related to what follows:
Remove the electrical compartment cover located behind the passenger seat
under the parcel shelf carpet and check to see if you have a "blue" module
among the other modules. It is located closest to the passenger side of the
car.
If its there, you need to get rid of it !!!
This item is responsible for stranding many DeLorean owners causing the
engine to overheat and sometimes, in extreme cases, causing permanent
engine damage. You can do a temporary fix with a by-pass link kit or better
yet purchase the Fanzilla.
An inoperative window requires the replacement of the factory unit with a
very high quality replacement available from DeLorean Part suppliers.

I am looking for a front spoiler for my D. In old Delorean World's they
were advertised quite a bit. It added about 2.5 inches
to the bottom of the spoiler and secured with 12 screws. They retailed for
about 150 bucks. I know there is a company
that currently makes side skirts and the rear valance but not the front
one. Anyone know where I can find one? Also, anybody have
experience with the twin turbo system currently available by Eleanor (cant
remember her last name)? They advertise in

Oh the subject of posters, I have a picture of the early "Presenting..."
poster that inspired me to make an updated version last month (I like to
play with PhotoShop in my spare time). I have recreated the poster (just at
an 18X24 size) and included newer articles. Instead of Presenting... the
new title is "It's Still Americas Most Talked About Car." If anyone from
the list is interested in a copy, let me know (I will e-mail you a smaller
copy) and I can get copies made (I think about $33 to print on an HP
Plotter) and will sell for that + shipping. I also have another one (same
size) that I don't even want to start trying to explain (e-mail for
details).
Let me know. Once I get my website back up I am planning on trying them out
on e-bay (probably $50 to start).
I am always playing with graphics, so if anyone has any suggestions for cool

Gerald,
Most DeLorean's have a factory issued modification that bypasses the "fan
fail" warning lamp function. We highly recommend the Fanzilla which vastly
improves the operation and reliability of the cooling fan circuit.
Installation of this high tech unit also re activates the "fan fail"
warning lamp.

I had a front shock come lose at the top last year, the top washer had split and I lost the bushing. I had replaced the shocks a couple of years before that.
If the shock is in good condition, get a new set of bushings and nuts and refasten it. I found some spare parts at a local tire/shock store that would fit until I was able to get the correct parts from a DeLorean Parts house. I have had

Delorean One sells cars that have been totally refurbished. I would
consider one of there cars to be better than a new D because of all the work
they do on them to get the cars to new condition.
You will also pay a very big price. I believe they sell their new cars for
something like $40k right now and the price goes up every year.
If you want a car you can drive with confidence the are the way to go. They
are probably the only place you can buy a D and drive it with a warantee.

One time, I accidentaly turned on the radio while I still had the car
cover on. (never do this). The antenna tried to go up, but got caught
on the cover. It then would go up, but not down anymore (the lowest it
would go was about a foot extended). Removing the antenna motor is
pretty easy, email me for details. After opening up the motor unit, I
found the flexable cable that pushes that mast upwards had broken.
Luckily, I had a spare mast, which I put into the motor unit, and since
then it has been working perfectly. You're problem may be electrical or
mechanical. It is probably mechanical if you hear the motor running,
but see no movement in the mast. If you never hear the motor running,
try looking at the electrical side of things. Good luck

Your DMC probably has the bypass set up. I recently installed this in my
car. If this procedure has been performed, the cooling fan fail light will
not illuminate.

I just bought a Delorean in May....the more I restore it the more I want to throttle the previous owner! (but that's another post).

I opened up the tank and everything looked fine. The fuel pump cover seal is all warped (needs replacing) but everything else looked fine (fuel pump, hoses, baffle, etc..). I siphoned out the gas. The gas was a really dark apple juice co

Maybe you should try to replace your filters. (i.e fuel, etc.) That might
help clean it up a little better.
