Arnie,
I had the exact same thing happen to me when I bought my DeLorean. The
cause of my problem was an enormous amount of sludge in the caliper
cylinders - some had even hardened. I removed the calipers, thoroughly
cleaned them, replaced all of the seals, reassembled, and everything was
back to neat!

After the state recentely screwed up the registration of my Ds, I
noticed something unusual in the serial number just before the BD.
There is a 6 in one, and 8 in another and a 9 in the third. They
certainly do not related to the month made. They were all stick cars. 2
grey, one black.
Any ideas why this digit is different?

the the doors so their arrival at the marriage point with the body didn't
always happen as planned. Perhaps some of the doors were routinely pulled at
the quality assurance centers and randomly reinstalled. I'm sure it's
nothing more interesting that one of these scenarios.

Don Steger at the DeLorean Motor Center sold a bell housing that matched
Chevy V-8's to the DeLorean transaxle. He also had one to match Buick V-6's
to the transaxle. Perhaps he still sells them. The Renault 5 speed is
reasonably rugged. Lotus used it in in the Esprit for a number of years and
I know a fellow with one of the Ford GT40 replicas that mated the Renault 5
speed to high performance Ford 302 V-8's.

I *would* agree with your theory, but it's not *random* enough to me.
Look again at what's been reported:
VIN 10570 DEC 81 - says V10570 on both doors, under the headliner
VIN 11004 JAN 82 - says V11004 on both doors, under the headliner
VIN 16328 AUG 82 - says V11328 on both doors, under the headliner
VIN 16428 AUG 82 - says V11428 on both doors, under the headliner
VIN 17089 ??? 82 - says V12089 on both doors, under the headliner
Note that the last three samples are off by EXACTLY 1000. Your theory
would make more sense to me if they were off my 1, 8, or even 37. But
exactly 1,000?
I have read that the 83's were really just the final partially
completed 82's that were finished after a government-mandated "cut-off"
date for a model year change.
For those of us that are interested in the VIN history, I think this is
a new "wrinkle" that can't be discounted so quickly.

The D is a REALLY beautiful car, very futuristic, but the dash looks SO old-fashioned,
something like in KITT (from KnightRider) woul look MUCH cooler if you asked me.

None that I know of. It would not be an easy thing to build yourself,
either. Your best bet might be to try to adapt a digital Corvette
dashboard from the same era which is, at least, vaguely the same size and
shape.

Note that digital dashboards are out of fashion right now, too; like the
talking "your door is ajar," they haven't been used much since the 80's.
Though Honda is putting one in the new S2000, the general trend is toward
analog gauges with lots of lights and glowing needles and numbers.
The dashboard was (if my brain is working correctly) personally designed
by John DeLorean and is an excellent design; all the gauges are clearly
visible and the steering wheel rarely gets in the way of the tach and
speedometer. Of course, the accuracy of said gauges is another matter. :}
If you want to add something "futuristic-looking" to the DeLorean dash, my
suggestion would be to install a stereo head unit with a pop-up LCD
display and connect a GPS system or some other high-tech gadgetry. It
would be far less work, probably more wow factor, and would do something
useful to boot. And if you ever want to change back to stock, you can.

Hi to All,
Nope I did not vanish never to be seen again except on milk cartons.
You may have noticed I have not posted at all in the last 3 weeks and not
responded to any private e-mails. There are two reasons, first Ken
Montgomery and I were working at getting a new Intel system up and running.
It is in a network of machines one of which is my e-mail system that needs
to network to function right. The other reason is I am in the midst of
attempting to both launch a Japanese distribution of software my company
developed and oddly enough working to sell my interest in the company and
retire. I am basically doing 20+ hour days right now.
I mention all this on the list so that the many of you who have asked for
the Delorean keys I make will know that I still make them and will reply as
well as I can to private e-mail. I will get to you in time. I should also
mention that the keys I make are now really very good now that I have a
high pressure casting machine. The deliveries to the various DNC companies
are all out my door so if you have ordered a key that way it should be
there now.
I am working now on the lost, delayed or missing keys now and will as I
get them done contact the person before shipping.
The other important note is about the Limited editions. First I have not
worked on the edition at all for the past 3 weeks. I will be re contacting
the current SAC list to provide a delivery date. AS every one knows by now
the production of the Limited edition kits is taking far longer than I had
ever guessed. However The kits are getting done and shipped. So far every
kit owners has told me that the kits are great and more than they had hoped
fore. "Good I say"
There are still a few unsold kits remaining, and if any one wants a kit
please use direct e-mail to inquire. There will be at least a 4 month wait.
I want to just assure every one that has purchased a kit, you will get
your kit, I am not taking any short cuts to get the kits out faster, every
single part must be right, the Kits will be every thing promised and more.
Ken M is helping me to re-organize and speed up the Limited edition
Internet site, which will have some new pictures and information in the
near future. I will announce that when the site is changed over.

Dakota Digital has offered to make me a custom Digital Dash if I want. You
would have to send them your Dash, so they could get the fittings right

Believe me, it WILL be cheaper to buy this DeLorean rather than importing
one. Even with the cost of the RHD conversion (around $10,000 by a reputable
converter) it will still be far cheaper. Also, in my opinion, if it does go
for less than $35,000 then you've got yourself a real bargain, since the
average going rate for DeLoreans in Oz is around $50,000 AUS.
The first thing we did when we got our D was replace the fuel pump, so I
don't think it's an uncommon failure among DeLoreans that have been in
storage. Although, I would be wary about the mechanical condition of the car
considering the ad states it's been in storage for about 12 years, and you'd
really have to go down to Melbourne to check it out before you make a
committment to buy it.
Also, we had a sizeable ding in the rear-left quarter panel of our DeLorean
fixed by a panel-beater in Blacktown (western Sydney), so you won't have any
dramas getting the ding in the Melbourne D fixed. The hardest part in
removing the panel is getting the rear fascia off, but after that you're
pretty much set.

Bill,
This may not be related, but one easy and cheap thing to check is the
fuses. When I got my D, I had trouble with the battery discharging.
(Low level on the dash gauge and the battery light partially glowing at
low rpm.) They replaced the battery with an Optima which also
discharged (but it had a bad cell). Then they put in an Interstate. It
discharged once and then wouldn't start. I had voltage everywhere, but
no power to start. When I pulled the fuses, all of them were oxidized.
Two of them (#1 and #?) had small burn marks on them and were beginning
to deform from the heat. After changing the fuses, I haven't had a
problem since and the dash gauge holds steady at just over 13 volts.

This is a little off the D track but the story of Irish "cave drawings"
prompted me to respond. I always encourage remodelers to leave little
"treasures" in the walls for the next person. Suggestions include:
- magazines and newspapers
- Daily weather reports
- Names ages and dates of those involved
- Small bags of coinage
Maybe we should be leaving envelopes in the D as we "remodel" them. Problem
is that there are not many good hiding places.

There was a post here a few weeks ago that referred to the Kenwood
KRC-3006 as a shaft style radio which could control a CD changer. Last
week, my radio started acting up, so I started looking for a replacement
that would not require modifying the car. From what I was told, that
may currently be the only shaft style radio with a CD controller.
Kenwood has discontinued it, but Circuit City has 38 left in their
special orders warehouse. The radio was going for $139.95 and the
associated 6-disk changer fits nicely into the locking compartment
behind the driver's seat.
The FM-modulated add-on changers will always be an option, but I wasn't
sure what to do with the controller for it. Just thought some of you
might like to know.

As a birthday present, my wife Patti just gave me a Data East's "Back to
the Future: The Pinball." I can't believe it, but as near as I can tell
we've never discussed the details of BTTF pinball on the DML before. It
is a *great* acquisition for any DeLorean fan.
This machine has DeLorean pictures all over it! To get it into
multiball play you need to light up the letters D M C and with each
letter you hear the DeLorean horn blow. At other times you hear a
DeLorean engine revving. And to get the big million point bonuses you
need to light up the letters D E L O R E A N. Fittingly, these are
called the "DeLorean Millions."
Some interesting details of the artwork: One of the bumpers looks like
a real, stock DeLorean speedometer! It only goes up to 85 MPH, although
the needle is showing 88. In the large backboard picture, the DeLorean
has an Illinois license plate (instead of California) which says FUSION
(instead of OUTATIME). Data East is headquartered in Illinois.
If anyone wants to know about the non-DeLorean features of the machine I
will be happy to discuss them by private E-mail. It's artwork covers
all three BTTF movies, and during play the machine says many movie lines
(in the character's voices) and it plays music by Huey Lewis and others.

Has anybody sucessfully put an Oldsmobile 307 engine into a D. I have
a friend who is bascially going to give me one for about nothing and
with a little tweaking I have been told I can get about 200HP at least
which is quite a bit better than the modest 130 stock. Also I could
use some recomondations on a transmission to use with that engine.

also looking for a close place that refurbishes our aluminium wheels.
Mine will only get stripped,polished,blacked between the "spokes" and
clear coated. No gray paint. I once saw a D with this wheel treatment -
looks excellent. Being in the eastern suburbs of Detroit there must be
some good metal refinishing shops near. Anyone used one they liked in my

We feel that this provides a valuable avenue for information to the DML
community. You won't see ads for DeLorean Parts and Services in Road &
Track, the audience is too small to justify the cost. How many times have
you heard at car shows "Where do you get parts for this thing?". It's
obvious that the public at large, and this includes new subscribers to the
list, are unaware of the resources out there. It is in the interest of
promoting the marque to make the public aware of these resources. For this
reason we also post links to all Vendor websites
(www.dmcnews.com/misc/links.html) , as well as any Organized Clubs
(www.dmcnews.com/misc/clubs.html) who give us information to post. We have
also allowed, and will continue to allow, clubs to post information of
quasi-commercial nature to the mailing list.
SO. . . .Here are the Rules - we will continue to post information from
anyone offering bona-fide Delorean-related equipment or services. We welcome
the vendor's contribution of technical advice. There's a line between "yes,
that part's available" and "Sale Sale Sale". Also "Flaming" of one vendor
to another will not be posted. On the other hand, vendors need to be aware
that as an "independent" mailing list, from time to time individual members
may elect to comment on vendors' service, both good and bad. We allow
members to tell of specific, factual experiences with vendors as long as the
accounts are well-written and reasonable. Sample OK - "It took three weeks
for Vendor X to ship my new lugnuts!" Sample NOT OK: "Vendor Y is an evil
company run by idiots." Compliments and "good news" stories are also
welcome, and we suspect that there are more of these in the archives than
the opposite.

They are made of brushed aluminum, and I think that they would really
look nice
on the Delorean.
At the site, click 'ENTER', then on the 2nd drop-down menu that says
'INSTRUMENTATION" click 'go' and it will show a picture of a dashboard.
Just browse through the menu and look at the different styles. I
don't know if any fit the D, though they offer to let you design your
own...

Now that Thom has posted the correct price I hope that all posters
realize why I rejected their messages. The typo of a $1700 DeLorean
brought such a huge flood of messages that I could not possibly read
them all.
Lesson learned: if anyone ever DOES offer a DeLorean for such a cheap
price, you must literally be on their doorstep with cash in hand within
an hour or you will have no hope of getting that deal for yourself.
Don't waste time replying when you could be driving toward the seller's
house.

Why do all of that work for just 200HP? That seems silly.
I would say that if you are going to do a engine transplant, you would
want more of a improvement. Especially if the 307 is a 8 cylinder (I
assume it is). Heck, you could get one of those new 222 HP Nissan
motors, and that is 6 cylinder! Better yet, the Buick 3.8 Grand
National motor is over 300HP from 6 cylinders!
You may want to consider some less expensive modifications to increase
HP, like the "euro" setup that has been discussed here, and can be found
on the DOC website.. Or, a turbo setup.

A few months ago, I inspected the boot covering the fuel pump and it looked
ok to me. The inside was very pliable, while the outside looked a bit dry.
I snugged the clamp back down & everything seemed fine.
Lately when I drive my D, (with the ac on) I notice a pure gas smell. It's
intermittent...any ideas?

Why?? I think polite discussion is good. Let us know why you feel this way.
Personally I agree whole heartedly with the message as written. It seemed
to have enough leeway to allow for someone from one of the parts suppliers
to post to say "We have those!", or to post a Web address for a sale and
things like that. Yet it keeps the list essentially non-commercial. I've
been on a list that turned into free advertising for one or two people.
Enough posts that it was difficult wading through them to get to the good
stuff. Finally the list died as people decided it was too much work. I
personally think the moderators are doing a great job and I fully support
their decision to limit commercial postings.

Unfortunately the Delorean is not as fast as it looks. The Delorean came
with a 2.8 SOHC V-6 engine producing only 130HP, which is low even in early
80's standards. 0-60 with the 5 speed was in the 9 second range, the
automatics were even slower. It's too bad DMC failed when it did. The 1984
Deloreans were supposed to have a lot more power in order to match speed
with its appearance. It was going to be twin turbo and twin intercooled in
order to compete with the new 1984 Corvette. This would've made 0-60 in the
high 5 second range and finishing the 1/4 mile in about 14.9 seconds. This
would've made the Delorean one of the fastest production cars in the world.
Of course you can always turbocharge an ordinary Delorean or swap in a
rotary powerplant for more performance.

I have to agree with Marc here. I'm not real familiar with the Olds 307, but
I know the Chevy 307 is a DOG. It has the same dimensions and weight as the
other chevy small blocks (302, 305, 307, 327, 350, 400), which are basically
just different combinations of internal parts, but was one of the weakest and
least popular motors. If you insist on the GM V8 conversion, spend a couple
hundred bucks and pick up a 350, which can EASILY be made to put out over 350
HP! I do however think that any of these would make for a car with horrible
weight distribution and possibly severe understeer. Following Marc's
suggestion with a smaller engine (4 or 6 cyl) and possibly a turbo, you could
feasibly end up with much more power than the D came with and a weight
distribution equivalent to the original or even closer to 50/50.
I know the offer of the free motor is tempting, but the hastles it will
create will quickly negate any savings.

This week several list members had trouble unsubscribing or changing
from the live to the digest version of the DML. The moderation team was
unable to help them, since the eGroups database showed that the changes
were already made. I complained to the eGroups support staff, and this
was their response:

In conjunction with the DeLorean Owners Association Expo in St. Louis,
Missouri, DeLorean Motor Company has organized and is hosting "Millennium", a
concours and carshow to be held October 9, 1999 at the Regal Riverfront
Hotel.
A proper concours judges automobiles on originality, correctness, and
attention to detail. In this regard, "Millenium: The DeLorean Motor Company
Concours" will be unlike any other DeLorean show or concours ever organized.
Using documentation from the original DeLorean Motor Company, there truly
will be no more prestigious event than "Millennium".
Only five cars will be accepted per class, and all potential entries will be
pre-qualified to ensure that only the highest caliber DeLoreans are
participants in this event. The classes are as follows:
1981, or DeLoreans with VIN's ending BDXXXXXX
1982, or DeLoreans with VIN's ending CDXXXXXX
1983, or DeLoreans with VIN's ending CDXXXXXX
People's Choice, for non-stock or modified DeLoreans, all years
Millennium Award, for previous winners of a DeLorean owners Association
concours
Registration is open to any DeLorean owner, regardless of club affiliation.
To apply for entry into the most prestigious of DeLorean events, contact John

If the fuel smell is intermittent, could be be related to when you have
just filled your tank?. NEVER top off your tank. when the nozzle shuts
off, quit. Often that cures any fuel smells in the car

Why not try looking into the lightwieght 4 cylinder from misubishi
eclibse/eagle talon. these engines under their turbos would put out from
195HP in earlier cars to 210 in the newer cars powered by the 2.0 liter neon
engine. And as anyone knows these little pocket rockets were great for
modding out. Personally ive driven Talons modded to 270HP dyno tested. And
the best thing of all, these cars were produced by the thousands and theres
gonna be plenty of remanufactured engines available, or from a wrecked car.
This wouldnt make the D as fast as the mitsu, but id love to see a D with a
210HP four-banger smoke one of those oh-so ridiculous integras.

It was my understanding that commercial advertisements weren't allowed on

I sure that it was not my post that started this again. I can assure the
List members and host that the kits and keys are any thing but commercial
let alone profitable. If my
post is causing trouble I would be glad to attempt just posting in private
to the
Edition owners. As I posted I do still have a few kits left I take it if

messages are barred (which is OK by me) then interested DMC owners could try

I remember riding my bike up to PJ Grady's about 4 years ago (i still
drive past everyday in my del sol dreaming of when i'll get my own) and
seeing a D getting worked on that had a real nice tan interior.
Obviously it wasn't a protype car so it had to of been done
custom......I personally think that it enhanced the look 10 fold and
gave it a very classy look. It was a long time ago so i can't remember
if the actual interior was just the normal design only with tan leather
substituted or if it was a total custom job. Does anyone know who's car
this could have been or any other comments on changing the interior
colors?

I used to own a 93 laser, and the thing flew. I didn't have the tsi turbo with the 2.0 dohc
motor but a friend did. The girls literly flew. There are tons of people who devote alot of
time to make there cars go fast. Go to www.dsm.org to learn a little more about the cars and
there engines.

I allowed the post from Mr. Espey because it was a direct answer to
subscriber Mike Babb's question as well as valuable information for the
thread. If a subscriber asks about TankZilla and Rob Grady answers with
the URL of his website, I will certainly allow that, too.
The Moderation Team gave this guideline on Monday: There's a line
between "yes, that part's available," and "Sale! Sale! Sale!"
Unless someone has a new insight into this policy we consider the issue
settled. Our generic answer to all those comments will be to refer back
to that guideline.

It's time I lubed my angle drive for the first time since getting my car
and I wanted to know if the NGLI #2 Wheel bearing lubricant I bought is
a better choice than using the aerosol can of white lithium grease with
the small red tube that sticks in the end of the aerosol tip?
I've read a post about a fellow who feels that the lithium stuff is
better but I have the special lube gun from Delorean Motor Center for
the job. Any opinions?

Could it be possibly the Delorean ,with the Delorean nosed tag along
trailer,featured in the Delorean World issue Summer of 1990 page 18,that had
a custom "Brown" interior.

I had Rob Grady look at a car for me in May and he told me it needed a
motor
and that it would cost me about $6k just for that and then the rest of
the work would be...thus he saved me from buying a beater. So based on
that I would say $6k is in the ball park for a motor. After almost
buying that car I now have the feeling if a car needs a motor it
probably needs a whole lot more also and I would be very carfull about
a project car like that. It is very easy to get seduced by a low price
but it will cost you in the long run. FYI there is a red Deloran in my
local paper for $5,500 (NEWSDAY). I was tempted to call but I bet the
car isn't worth buying unless you wanted to go through the trouble of
parting it out.

list of parts they have when an item is asked for on the DML. I think its
good that this type of posting is now allowed, but since this policy is
indeed different than past practice lets make sure all the major parts
suppliers are aware of it. They probably dont have employees following the
DML postings as closely as some others. In my experience PJ Grady, DMC
Houston and DeLorean Motor Center have all been extremely helpful to myself
as a DeLorean owner as I am sure there are others that are as well.

I am saddened to see a topic like this get ugly. I personally cherish ANY
information that I can get my hands on concerning my DeLorean Automobile. I
do, however, agree with the position of the moderators. This list has been
my single best source for finding answers, as well as being instrumental in
making some new friends. If I was James Espey or DMCJoe, Rob Grady, Steven
Wynne, and others that have GIVEN so much, so freely, to all of us, I would
be very offended. Having done business with most of these fellows, I am
satisified that they have no intention of prostituting this list, but I will
tell you this, I hope they never throw up their arms, and say "to heck with
it!" We would all be in a world of hurt.

Turbocharged rotaries put out 255HP and the turbo MR2 engine put out 200 HP.
The MR2 was even mid engine so it's possible that the swap would be
slightly easier. Either one of these would be an ideal choice over a cast
iron small block. Both of these engines also have an abundance of CARB
legal parts so you can upgrade to even more power if you desire.

Both the front and rear "fascias" (bumpers) on my car are starting to
fade, and the paint is coming apart on the horizontal surfaces. I have
a DAU paint code to match the original color, however the guy at the
auto paint store said I would need plastic primers, flexibilizers,
stabilizers, etc in addition to the paint itself. The total would be
about $240 for just the materials. Then I would have to borrow a paint
gun, and try to do the job myself. It doesn't sound like a good
project. How have other people dealt with fading paint? Would an auto
body shop strip, prime and paint them, if I took the bumpers off the
car? Has anyone had any experience with sending the fascias out to be
painted? Where?

dealership and was telling me that a Cadillac Northstar V8 would fit
perfectly in the delorean. Northstar's are very good engines and have
ALOT of power, I don't know the exact specs on it but I think it's
around 300 HP (i think). and they can be easily modified to get well
over 400 HP. So if your looking for power , i would recommend the
Northstar. I eventually plan to put one in my d

Unless the car has overheated enough to cause damage, then this may not
be a major problem.
Overheating is common on the DeLorean because of the setup of the
cooling system. If it is properly serviced, then the problem should go
away.
There are methods of checking to see if any damage has been done to the
engine due to overheating, you may want to investigate this. Of course,
if the seller is asking for a number on the high end, then it is not
worth the time or effort to check in to it if for the same or a bit more
money you can get a DeLorean with a better history.
If you decide not to purchase this vehicle, please post information on
it. There may be members on the list looking for project cars,
including me.

A northstar system does have alot of power. But also requires a northstar transmission for it
to work. So you would have to adapt a motor and transmission. To get both your looking at
around $5k and if you have a standard, your looking at now owning a auto.

In response to the comment about the Northstar transmission: You would not
want the northstar transmission. The motor sits in front of the
transmission, which would not work in the D. Perhaps the northstar could be
mounted in a longitudinal manner and mated (via adapter plate) with a Porsche
tranny. I don't know the length of the Northstar to know if this would fit
either. None of these are cheap options, but if such an interesting
combination were, everyone would have them!
I'd really be interested in the Mazda rotary conversion. Anyone doing or
seriously considering this? Also, does anyone know the weights of a
complete, stock D motor vs. the rotary?

service. I see absolutely NO problem with this at all. As a DeLorean
owner I would insist that the moderators allow such postings. That's

there was a set on eBay. I was not advertising for or about eBay in any
manner or stretch of someone's twisted imagination. It was simply a

matter, to post an unsolicited commercial ad that is in no way in response
to a specific request for help. I suppose we need to further define
"commercial" here as being "for profit" as opposed to a private individual
offering for sale personal property that may be of interest to the DML
community. Additionally, the commercial suppliers do not need to advertise
on the DML. There is an abundance of links to all sorts of suppliers of
DeLorean parts and service available to any savvy enthusiast.
This seems crystal clear and simple to me. Where are the clouds? I DO NOT
believe for a moment that the moderators are in bed with the likes of James Espey
or DMC Joe and their respective commercial operations. Both have contributed
greatly to the success of the DML and I shudder to think where the DML would
be without them, albeit that James was the founder. BTW, the DML is one of the
most successful of all eGroups, thanks in no small part to Espey. I also shudder
to think where the DML would be without the likes of the current moderators and,
of course, MOM. Their unselfish, unpaid, and often unappreciated efforts must
be recognized for what they are, not for what they are not.

Yes, the moderators position has been made clear. My message was in
response to the confusion created by John Hanley's message. Honestly,
my intention was to send that message only to John, but somehow I must
have hit the wrong button on my mailer. My OPINION on the issue was
stated. In all my years as a member of the DML, there have been many
private e-mail messages passed around that would convince me that a
posting of a negative opinion to the DML could lead to undesirable
results. Because of that last message, I have already (by mistake)
taken the plunge... I guess I should still be reserved though because
of the possibility of repercussion.

I did not say I had a problem with DMC Houston, DMC Joe, or any
commercial postings. I just find it odd that I know PJGrady, and other
commercial DMC suppliers are on the list yet I never see any postings
from them.
IMHO DMC Joe is the complete opposite of DMC Houston's participation on
the list. Without any research in to it my feeling is that most of DMC
Joe's messages are "This is how to fix that problem" where DMC Houston
is "You can buy that part from us". We can all tell the difference. I
hardly consider DMC Joe's participation in the list to be commercial.
Both add value to the DMC community, I have benefited from Stephen and
James posting "we have that" along with DMC Joe's technical
contributions, and I hope to continue to have a good relationship with
both.
Personal conversations have revealed that in the past postings have been
rejected because they were commercial or should be sent privately from
specific commercial posters. This is past history, I can only hope this
will change in the future. As customers of Delorean service centers, we
should notify PJ Grady, Delorean Motor Center, D1, and any others I may
have forgotten that they are now welcome on the DML as participants, and
not lurkers.
I agree that James Espey has played a key role in the success of the
DML, but lets not act like running a mailing list is rocket science. I
stand by my past comments (over the past few years) that James had put
many hours of time in to moderating the list and for the most part did a
good job. BUT, Lets also not pretend that there are no perks to being in
such a position... After all, He now works for DMC Houston. Would he
have this job if it were not for the DML?

Ed, I dont know you and have no personal gripe with you...
With that said, if you really wanted this to drop, you would not have
posted your response. I am glad you said "Let's" because you have
correctly included yourself in the "get a life" comment... This is a
good conversation, and I disagree with "get a life" for both you and me,
I see this as a flame and dont know why the moderators allowed it.
I would like to see the issue "resolved" and not just get on with
business as usual. From where I sit, the new moderators are also doing
a good job considering the work involved with the maintenance of such a
list, and with time they will improve and become more consistent. I was
happy to see the clarification message eairlier this week, now time will
tell how fairly it is executed.
I would propose we try to limit the bickering in order to wait and see
the results of this new (or clarified) policy. The list is much more
productive without it. Yes, with the above message I am also guilty of

As some of you know, I have been working on a subwoofer box for the back
shelf of the D.
This past weekend, I was able to assemble the box, and take some
accurate measurements, if anyone wants to try to reproduce it.
For the audio enthusiast:
The box is a "wedge" shape, and using the wedge speaker formulas, the
internal air volume is about .9FT^3 Using geometry formulas, I
calculate the volume to be .822FT^3 Close enuff!
Because the front of the wedge ended up to be about 10 inches (smaller
than I would have liked) it will be risky to put a 10 inch woofer in
there. If you recall, my plan was to use a sealed enclosure with some
10 inch Kicker solobaric woofers (EXPENSIVE!)
With the results as they are now, I will use a high power 8 inch woofer
in a 4th order vented box. Although this will not be as "tight", it
will be more efficient and have a lower resonant frequency (about
33Hz). It should not sound as "boomy" as the bandpass enclosures that
most of the obnoxious "thumper" cars have in them.
I have looked at a number of drivers, and the MTX BTLB4 looks like a
good candidate. According to their web site, this will work well in a
box of my size with a 2X7.75 port. I have no prices on them yet.
If anyone is interested in progress pictures, of drawings to try and
duplicate it, please contact me directly. I hope to have it complete in
the next month.

I think this might be a good idea. In emailing back and forth with
Dakota Digital the cost to have a custom one done will be about $800
after shipping. I'm hoping that they will be able to cut off at least
$100 bucks if we can order a few of these. We would have to agree on a
specific design to be able to get a discount though. I see no reason
to change the layout of the current setup as it is and run with that.

The DeLorean Mailing List is unquestionably the best source online for
DeLorean information - and that includes technical advice, parts sources
and pricing, as well as feedback about experiences with DeLorean vendors.
In my capacity at DeLorean Motor Company, I respond to publicly to messages
where I believe my posting will be of benefit to DeLorean owners and
enthusiasts as a whole. I respond privately when the information is of less
broad nature. I think that we have the best customer service, the best
mechanical service, and certainly the best selection of parts. I will
promote it as much as I can wherever it is allowed.
I have neither asked for nor expect any "special treatment" as a result of
my past relationship with the list. I've had messages rejected, so I think
it's safe to say that I am not getting any special treatment, either.
With DMC Joe dishing out technical advice and offering "house calls",
sources of parts are a natural extension - I wish that other vendors would
contribute, too. Competition is healthy, and there's nothing wrong with
having alternatives.
But since this whole thread appears to have been a result of my postings, I
would invite Delorean owners and enthusiasts that are interested in knowing
more about the goings on at DeLorean Motor Company (Houston) to subscribe

I'm sorry, but I cannot imagine why anyone would want to convert from
a reliable and aesthetically pleasing analog dash. If the car came with
a digital dash in the first place, I can assure you that I would be
the first in line to purchase an analog conversion if one were to be
made available. This has nothing to do with keeping the car "pure".
It has everything to do with reliability and aesthetics. As to the
question of accuracy, who cares if the temperature reads 180 degrees
or EXACTLY 181 degrees? Or if you are going EXACTLY 61 MPH instead of
an indicated 60 MPH? I can speak from some degree of experience
having owned a 1984 Corvette almost as long as I have owned my 1981
DeLorean (Since 1982). I have had a variety of problems with the
digital dash on the Corvette almost since day one, including a $500
badly needed total rebuild. I have never had a problem with the D's
analog dash. If I could get my hands on an analog dash for my Vette,
I would have converted it long ago. Do you have any idea which
technology is used on the C-5 Vettes? It ain't digital! GM dropped
the digital dash technology in favor of analog years ago, especially
in the high end cars. Other manufacturers may have done the same
thing. I don't think any of the exotic high performance European
sports cars ever did use a digital dash. BTW, after market vendors
offer a plug-and-play digital dash conversion for C-3 Corvettes.
They don't sell many.

Whoever posted this could have had the courage to add their name I consider
it pretty slanderous. The moderators have made a ruling on this, their task
is thankless, we bitch when they make a wrong decision, each of us is our
own Delorean expert often disagreeing with what another DML'r may say or
think. I personally think they are wrong and I will go about proving to
them that it is wrong. This I intend doing privately as I have had mail
privately, guys enough,,, I caused a stir when I posted my message, I had
intended to do so, my code of ethics said that I had to take some form of
action and make people really think the whole picture out.

Assuming this list is truly for US, the subscribers, I find it only natural
that WE decide when an andividual or organization is abusing our list. The
moderator's job is to organize and distribute the list, weeding out OBVIOUS
junk. If however, a posting is even remotely relevant, it should be posted.
If we the subscribers begin to see a trend, such a vendor submitting "sale"
adds, then WE should notify the moderator, privately if necessary. It would
then be the moderator's job to watch submissions from that vendor a little
more closely. I personally have never seen such a posting on here and I
appreciate the posting from DMC Joe and James. (In fact, sometimes Joe's
comments/instructions are so detailed, I think he's "cutting his own
throat".) This kind of selfless devotion to helping people is what we need
on the list, not abuses in the form of "sale" adds or moderator censorship.
All IMHO, of course.

A simple fact: You can "read" an analog gauge, in your periferal vision
without actually looking directly at it or taking your eyes off the road.
You can't do that with a digital! That's the practical side of it. Digital
gauges do look kinda neat though and are good for "spectator reaction". Your
choice: FORM or FUNCTION.

Yup the Northstar should fit fine. If it'll fit in a fiero it'll fit in a
Delorean. Some people even turbocharge the Northstar to extract over 400
horsepower. Unfortunately the Northstar engine is available only with a 4
speed automatic.

you buy a car without knowing mileage, or id discoloration is showing. On the
D's, discolorization is near-identical to rust on "normal" bodied cars. Sorry

Actually the Cadillac Deville and d'Elegance have a digital
dash. The other Cadillacs have analog Speedometer,
Tachometer, fuel, and temperature readouts. Everything
else is digital.

Ben,
Any reliable body shop should be able to handle the front and rear facia of the D without
having to remove them. I had a local body shop that specialized in Corvettes to repaint mine
about 2 years ago. I just gave them the paint code and they did the rest.

I had my rear fascia painted recently and paid $200.00 for a professional
job. The body shop that I used specializes in import cars and high-end
autos. They quoted me the same price for the front fascia also. I had the
rear done first because it desperately needed a refinishing. I am happy with
the result and if anyone in the Chicago area wants to see it, please contact
me.

The Northern California DeLorean Motor Club (NCDMC) will be holding its
August meeting on the 15th of the month.
We've been able to set up something a little special for our August
gathering. We'll meet for breakfast at 9:00AM at the Velvet Grill, in
Alameda (see links info below). We'll discuss planning for upcoming
meetings during breakfast. From there we'll caravan to the USS Hornet
(the aircraft carrier that was the recovery ship for the Apollo 11 and
12 Moon missions). We've made arrangements to park the DeLoreans on the
pier alongside the ship. Normally, no private vehicles are allowed on
the pier but they are making an exception for us. If you want to take
pictures, be sure to bring a wide angle lens to capture the whole scene.
A typical tour of the ship is about 1 1/2 hours and the admission fee is
$9.00 per person with a $1.00 off discount for groups of 10 or more.
We'll be planning to arrive at the Hornet at 11:00AM in case you can't
make the breakfast (see links info below).
Please contact me and let me know if you can make the gathering. We need
to let both the restaurant and the USS Hornet know how many people and
cars to expect. Again, that's August 15th.

I've just purchased a very nice '83 model that has a few small problems.
While investigating a rough and very rich idle I noticed that the ECU
module is not mounted on the firewall ahead of the engine. In fact I've
not been able to locate the ECU module at all! Is the ECU module located
somewhere else not shown in the assembly or workshop manuals?
There are also some vacuum lines missing from the spark advance control
solenoid that is located on the top front of the engine. There are no
vacuum leaks however as all lines are in good condition and none are
"hanging in the breeze".
I wonder if anyone knows if some cars may have been modified to
eliminate the ECU module. I know that this seems far fetched but as I am
just beginning to learn the workings I'm at a loss to explain all of
this.

I don't think this qualifies as a commercial. A specific question was asked and someone
answered it, it could have as easily have been you giving the requested information. If I
post a question I want anyone that can answer it to answer it, regardless of their
affiliation. Advertising would when someone posts a product for sale without being asked, who
just spams the DML list. I think this response by Mr. Espey is appropriate for the list.
Someone else who needs this information in the future will just have to search the group.

that's why they've invented (and used) BarGraph-readouts...
Just like the odometer/tach on KITT (KnightRider), where the RPMs are shown with a bar of leds in different colors.

Below is a message I received from Richard Cutter. I lost the URL, but
it was posted to the DML a few weeks back. This outfit has a number of
kits for the Fiero including a Northstar.
Everything sounds good, except for the price! With turbos on the PRV6,
we could probably get 0-60 in 7 seconds. Turbos are significantly less
than 20K
Considering the wide use of the PRV in Europe, including high
performance and race cars, I dont understand why we cant just get 250+
HP from the PRV.

I have recently had a custom box made for my d in a similar format. They
were able to make a box that fits exactly on the shelf and extend at an
angle toward the rear window.
They were able to make the angle exactly as the cargo net sits as not to
stretch it. They then put in 2 Kenwood 4 way 6x9 speakers and 2 10 inch
Rockford Fosgate (spelling apology) subs in the box and placed the Alpine
amp under the passenger seat. I had installed the matching Alpine receiver
and cd changer installed previously. BTW the Alpine cd changer fits
perfectly in our glove boxes with no modifications.
The speakers and amp was mine from before so the total cost was about
$125.00 installed and I have had several people ask if the box was factory
as the carpet matches almost exactly.

These were my call, Ed. I think the Commercial Posting Policy thread is
the most ridiculous (and embarrassing) one in the history of the DML.
By the end most subscribers probably deleted every message without

serious language that threatened the DML, and I believed that all the
subscribers should have a chance to read them and respond to them.

If you want a digital dash, go get it. Don't let anyone tell you
differently. It's a matter of personal opinion, and I think that anyone who
puts you down for wanting one has a serious problem with freedom of choice.
Everyone here who has insulted this person, saying "why would you want
one... they serve no purpose..." should appologize to this person. Everyone
has a right to do whatever they want to their car... even if you or I don't
agree with it. That's what makes the world go around.
Personally, I think a digital dash is neat and would look great in the car.
Function vs looks? C'mon. Saying race cars have analog dashes because race
cars should have analog... Who here has a DeLorean that can win a race
against a Dodge omni turbo? Or any race for that matter? I think very few
could. The car wasn't designed to race. Let's appreciate it for what it is
and let people do what they want to it.

Robert,
I have heard many a time that the Banshee concept car was what the DeLorean was based on.
It was the first car that Bill Collins and John DeLorean worked on together, as I recall. It
also had some of the same ideas that were eventually built into the DeLorean. It would seem
that DeLorean worked on this while he was at Chevrolet, because it looked like a Corvette of
the Mako-Shark body style variety.
I have no idea about the political circumstances surrounding the concept's production. I
don't know why GM didn't make it, but I'm pretty sure that if they had, it would still be
successfully manufactured today. Besides the Vega, it seems like every car DeLorean ever had
a hand in at GM was a financial success.

The DeLorean's 3 ECU's are located under the parcel shelf behind the seats.
I think the idle speed ECU is located behind the driver's seat with the
ignition computer.

This is my understanding, but it may not be true.
When Delorean was leaving GM, he attempted to obtain or purchase the rights,
plans and prototype of the the Aerovette. The Aerovette was a wankel
powered, rear engine or mid-engine, gullwinged car, that Delorean did work
on while at Chevy. The prototype was even painted silver.
Now it is my opinion that if Delorean had obtain the rights, plans, and the
prototype of this car when he left GM, we all would be driving very diffrent
looking Deloreans today.
The Delorean that we are driving today had no influence directly from GM.

Dude, the hoverboards may not be true but they used a lot more than computer
graphics to make those things fly. They used every trick in the book
including skateboards, animation artists, moving platforms, and even
suspended actors by strings.
The concept of the hoverboard is something that will be real in the future.
There is one company on the net that has developed a REAL hoverboard that
floats on a cusion of air.
I apologize to the list and moderators for this message that doesnt have
much to do with the D but i feel that BTTF is a verry important film and i
was offended by the post that said they just used computers to make the
hoverboards fly.
I am sure that BTTF is an important movie to many of us DMLers becuase of
its exclusive use of DeLoreans.

newer model has less defects and bugs that were common in the 1981 DMC-12.
so, i think you should buy a newer one. or if you can wait for the new
DMC-2000 due out next summer, i'd say go for that one, i know i will.

John DeLorean did not design the DMC-12. Not at GM and not at DMC.
DeLorean had a dream, a vision, that did indeed begin before he
left GM. His vision was to build a car that COULD compete with the
Corvette. His dream was to build a car that WOULD compete with the
Corvette. Unfortunately his dream became a nightmare and his vision

build would not generate enough volume or meaningful profits. He
was too much of a maverick to suit GM top brass. As General Manager

destroyed. Three years later he left. He was heir apparent to the
throne.
Pursuing his dream and vision very shortly after he left GM he began

of them rich. This resulted in DeLorean losing any more perks he
had coming to him from GM because he had an exit agreement that he
wouldn't pursue working for any other car company. That cost him
dearly personally.
About a year later he persuaded Bill Collins to leave GM and join
him in his new project. DeLorean set some design parameters and
Collins set about designing a car that would incorporate those
parameters. When Collins finished the fundamental design it was
time to find someone with the talent and resources to produce the
final styling. Working within DeLorean's design parameters and
Collins' fundamental design, Ital Design of Turin, Italy headed
by Giorgetto Giugiaro produced the first design of the DMC-12 and
built the first full scale model that later was turned into the
first DMC-12 prototype (not the Fiat X 1/9) built by Kar Kraft
of Detroit in 1976.
BTW, NONE of the instrument panels design possibilities by
Ital Design was digital!

There is no new model dude.
I don't see why you newbies come on the list with all this false
information.
All we know is he is working on a design. He doesn't have the financial
support, that means we won't be seeing a new D anytime soon. The car is
supposed to be plastic, light weight, and fast.
The weight and engine information can be found somewhere on the net but I do
not recall where i read the information. You might try checking

Just in case anyone is interested, I stopped by Borders last night and
placed an order for DeLorean's autobiography (DeLorean, by
John Z. DeLorean, 1985)...apparently it's still available from the
publisher in the original hardback form, and it's only $9.95, although I'm
a bit curious about that price...has anyone purchased it recently, and if
so, how much did you pay (if you don't mind my asking)?

Josh,
The History Channel had an episode on the Pontiac Firebird that mentions the
Banshee. GM killed the project because they didn't want a competitor for the
Corvette coming from inside GM. The current Firebird is said to be very
similar to the Banshee.

It's funny you should mention this color combo. On most new performance cars
I have looked at recently, from the Mustang to a BMW, I have seen the exact
opposite. All the gauges have white backgrounds. I am not sure of the logic
behind this but I don't think it is very appealing. However, as has been said
previously, none have digital dashes.
Each style is probably just a fad of the times.

We have rented out our D for many cooperate functions, and TV productions.
There are many restrictions when any vehicle is displayed in a public
building, i.e.: fire and building codes. Special insurance is another

A couple of comments from a racer. Many older cars, such as in the early
nineties had the black faced gauges with red needles. Now, today, watch a
Winston-Cup race. Look inside the cockpit, and you will see many of them
with white/silver backgrounds with day-glo orange needles. Some prefer the
black faces and day-glo orange needles. But for racing purposes, the
silver/white faced gauges are very popular because Auto Meter, the
manufacturer of the gauges, has a "light weight" version.
Now, watch an Indy/Cart race or even Formula 1........Digital LCD dashes!
Just my two cents.
I feel the Delorean gauges look very nice..very clean and easy to read.
Just a matter of opinion or preference or functionality or even weight
savings.

You are probably thinking of the Aerovette.. I think the Aerovette had
gull-wing doors and other characteristics
that resembled the features of the DeLorean.

Ben,
If the engine reaches normal operating temperature and any of the coolant
lines are cold you have a problem that will lead to engine over heating. If
the cooling system operates properly there is no reason why you would have
no heat. Check to be sure that you have the proper level of coolant. In 15
years of servicing DeLorean's we have never seen a heater core fail or
clog.

Another Japanese car with very many similarities to the DeLorean is the
Subaru SVX. Imported in the early to mid nineties it was designed by the well
known Ital Design Studio. It has four tollbooth windows, air vents piped
through the doors, etc.

Someone mentioned the Aerovette in a previous post. I picked up a model
produced by Revelle/Monogram at Wal-Mart. It is kit #7638.
Below, I have paraphrased the description from the instruction sheet.
Back in the late 70's, it became apparent to General Motors that their
Corvette Stingray would have to be replaced............
One of the concept cars was the Aerovette. It began life as the XP-882. a
mid-engine prototype using the 400 cid V8 mated to the Olds Toranado
transaxel. In 1973, the XP-882 was repowered with a four rotor Wankel
engine. Bill Mitchel, Corvette Styling magnate, gave the car new life by
installing a small block chevy and christening it the aerovette. It was
promoted as the new sixth generation vette for the 80's but never saw
production.
Charles Jordon oversaw the aerovette design, which included radical bifold
gullwing doors, and a deformable plastic body colored nose and tail
sections, revolutionary in the mid 70's.
Just thought that this was good info for the list.
I finally worked through about 500 emails, my PC has been down.
The new list format seems to be doing well, the heated debates continue.
The moderating team is doing a good job and I hope that the list continues
to offer good advice, from owners, suppliers and repair facilities alike.

Subject: [DML] Mildew in the South

I decided today to take my DeLorean out for a spin.
I am ashamed to say that it has sat patiently in the garage for the last
three months without any attention from me.
There is now a very fine dusting of "Mildew" on the seats and steering
wheel. It seems to wipe away fairly easily.
It is very humid in Mobile, ALabama. Does anyone have any suggestions as to
how I can prevent the mildew from forming in my car.

Hello Sean,
The solution (or at least one version of the solution) to this De Lorean
"feature" can be found in DML-digest issue 38, dated 13 November 1995. Here

operation and it works perfectly. If anyone has NOT performed this fix, in
my opinion, it is well worth the 10 minutes!

(2) DMC Joe stopped here for some repairs on his tour of the south - Joe
you did a great job and I cannot thank you enough. One thing he did for me
was install Fanzilla. It is working great, but I have one question. I
thought that one thing that Fanzilla did (other than the obvious) was to
turn the console lights off unless the head lights are on. Could someone
shed some light on this and maybe give some detailed instructions on how to
shut these console lights off unless the head lights are on.
