Most likely a bent or a broken 1st and 2nd gear synchronizing pin. Need to
open the tranny and replace the pin. Had the same problem two years ago.
Part is very cheap. Labor.........duh.
The other problem can also be broken 1st or 2nd gears -- hope not.

After many months of reading and learning of trouble areas and repairs on the
DMC, it is now my turn so here goes. I just took the "D" for its emission
test here in Arizona and failed the portion that deals with oxides of
nitrogen (NOX). The brochure provided to me by the testing described what to
look for:
1) Possible EGR system malfunction
2) Abnormal engine operating temperature (car has run consistently within
normal temperature ranges)
3) Air management system
4) Lean air/fuel mixture
5) Catalytic converter efficiency
6) Over-advanced off-idle timing
The question I have is out of these possible causes, which is the most likely
to cause this failure and have checked first, then second, etc.? I'm sure
this has occured to someone else and any assistance is greatly appreciated.
FYI, the car is a 1983 automatic with 2,760 miles. Thanks again.

I may be wrong but what makes everyone think they would have to pay royalties
for showing automotive logos in a movie. Every year thousands of cars show up
in movies and television, all of them fully dressed in company logos. I doubt
there are any royalties paid on these.

P.S. The DeLoreans used in "Back To The Future" and "Matlock" all displayed
their logos. I think the DMC emblem is missing in "The Wedding Singer" for a
different reason.

Carol, DMC Joe, Et al,
In reference to a clogged air conditioning system, I have been there.
It can and does happen. It is believed my clog came from some sandlike
substance breaking up in the old style accumulator. The oriface tube was
stuffed solid, and all the lines had to be cleaned out with a special
kit.
Since I was spending a fortune anyway, I took the giant leap and
replaced the old style accumulator with the new one, replacing the hose
and all. Then I had it recharged with R-134 to see how that would
work. It cools fine. If R-12 cools more than R-134 I would imagine it
could get pretty cold in that car. For anyone wanting to convert, if
you do not like the R-134, it's not a difficult process to change back
to R-12. Your shop evacuates, changes the oil in the compressor, and
recharges.

I just went through this frustration with California emissions. It turned out to be two things. One, my whole fuel system had just been taken apart and cleaned part by part, including the fuel tank. The cleaner that was used was not complet

I'm a teen driver and I have had my D for almost a year. I'm about to turn
19 in September. All I can say is that I'm glad I have a second car for
when my D isn't roadworthy. I am also very thankful I still live with my
parents. If I had to pay rent as well, I think I would have to sell it, at
cost, immediately. I work full time as a detailer at a Pontiac dealership,
and it's barely enough to support me and my car. Whenever anything goes
wrong with the car, I am forced to split the cost of repairs with my dad.
And right now, I am $300 in debt to him because of the D. I am trying to
sell the car now, but I hope to own another in the future when I am more
financially stable and can care for the car, and have some spending money
too. I would have to say that the DeLorean is a fantastic car, although not
very suitable for a teenaged driver.

I read of how the stainless steel body of the DeLorean is easy to
maintain, but I have a few questions about it. It is recommended to use
scochbrite pads to clean it. Are scotchbrite pads just sponges with a
rough textured side? Could you use steel wool on it also?

The only proper way to remove them is by first removing the quarter panel from the car. There are two clips on the backside of these vents that hold them in place. You're probably better off spraying them while they're on the car. Just do a

You don't need to. Just do a good masking job with masking tape and protect
surrounding area with protective paper (or use newspaper). Then spray with
the black paint.

I would recommend that you put the DMC in storage, that is if you feel the
car is is good condition and you really want to keep the car, because if you
sell it, you might not find one as good as you have now. I wouldn't sell the
car, unless you just absolutly need the money. I know its not my buisness,
but I dont want you to make a mistake you might regret later.
Just stick the car in your parents garage, or in storage somewhere, and go
crank it and let it run every now and then. Then one day, when you get
settled down, and get finanically set, you can pull it out, and enjoy your
car.
Thats just my 2 cents.

There were approximately 2,200 production changes from the first to the
last car. Roughly 75 of those changes were published as Service Bulletins.
I would suggest that you purchase the Factory Bulletins book which contains
most of the Service Bulletins and all of the Recall Notices. The book is
available from PJ Grady and DMC Houston for under $40.

Dan,
This is a very common problem, we see this all the time. This was the
reason the factory created Safety Campaign No. RA-0001 which included two
heavy duty doubler plates and strengthening brackets. If you frame
extension is bent up to the 1/4 to 1/2 inch as you mentioned it will affect
your front end geometry therefore you will need to have the frame
re-aligned. The reason that your cooling system has not been greatly
effected is because the system can maintain cooling with the failure of one
of the cooling fans. However, the one fan operation will effect your AC
cooling efficiency especially when the car is not in motion.
Having your mechanic creating special brackets to compensate for the bent
frame member is a "band-aid" type fix. For your safety, do the job right.

Mark,
1) First, there is no EGR valve system on the DeLorean, so skip this
information.
2) Based on the cooling system gauge reading normally for you, I would skip
looking for a hot spot in the cylinder head or cylinders.
3) There is no air management system to speak of, so skip this.
4) Lean/Air fuel mixture is a good possibility.
5) With only 2,000 miles on the car, it is really doubtful that there is a
catalytic convertor problem. The car would have to be running rough or
poorly to create a problem in this area considering the low mileage.
6) Timing is a major factor in high NOX emissions. I can not speak for
Arizona's smog inspection procedures, but here in California we have to check
the timing during the smog test, so I would have to assume that this was also
done and the timing is within specifications.
So what is causing your failure? Please provide me with the reading of NOx,
HC, CO, and O2 if you can. Did you fail at the idle portion of the test or
the 2500 rpm level? Was the car fully warmed up before the test was
performed? Are you having any other problems?
I will provide what help I can without seeing the car.
Quick background: I am a licensed Smog Technician here in California. I am
also a certified ASE Master Automobile Technician. I do not work on
Delorean's or own one. I am just a fan of the car. My dream would be to own
one some day, when all of the planets align in my favor.

Thanks for all the good advice to date. I was hoping it would be the least
costly of all the items I listed!! To your response David, I don't have
specific readings but for the NOX readings, the applicable standard is 3.0
grams/mile and the Delorean is putting out 5.4 grams/mile. The other
readings were: Hydrocarbons (HC) .10 g/m (standard is 2.00 g/m); Carbon
Monoxide (CO) 1.3 g/m (standard is 30.0 g/m) The car was fully warmed up
for the test. The car runs fine -- perhaps a bit hesitation when cold but
nothing really major to be concerned about. While the NOX reading is not
excessively high, if all that is required is a tweak of the air /fuel
mixture, that makes me happy. Is this something I should attempt or just
take it to the professionals?

If you have a scratch or blemish that ScotchBrite won't remove you
could try steel wool, BUT NEVER use regular steel wool. You MUST
use stainless steel wool. It's not easy to find, but it is out
there. Regular steel wool will leave tiny particles behind that
you can't see.....until it rains or gets wet and then you will
have tiny brown spots all over that you CAN see. If you use either
stainless steel wool or ScothcBrite NEVER brush or rub using a
circular motion. Always move in the direction of the "grain" of
the surface you are working on.
There are also professional "restaurant" grade SS cleaners out there
that work quite well. A brand that I use regularly with really good
results is "TR***Stainless Steel Cleaner Sealer" made by TR Industries
of South Gate, CA. (I don't know if this brand is still available.)
These types of cleaners/sealers can usually be found in a good
restaurant supply store.

There were no less than 20 prototype DeLoreans built. The first one
(not the Fiat X 1/9), as designed by Giugiaro, was built by Kar Kraft
of Detroit. Later is was decided that a larger firm should be
employed so the project was moved to Creative Industries where the
second prototype was built. Both of these prototypes were built
under the watchful eye of Bill Collins.
When the decision was made to sign with Northern Ireland for the
production of the DeLorean, Bill Collins and company moved to
Norwich, England (about 100 miles northeast of London) after
JZD signed a deal with Lotus to further the development of the
car. Colin Chapman (founder of Lotus) and Collins didn't get
along and Collins later resigned. Under the direction of
Chapman, Lotus built at least another 18 DeLorean prototypes.
All of these prototypes were built in the image of the full
scale epoxy-wood model created by the Ital Design studios
under the direction of Giugiaro. Later a full scale pine
model was built by Design Caucus.
Some of the prototypes were used for pre-production promotion
and advertising (such as the C&D article). Some were used for
crash testing. Where are they? Who knows? Certainly some
were scrapped, but others are probably still around somewhere.
Most are probably still in England. Maybe a contact with
Lotus may bring results. Give it a try and let us know.

Your best bet is to take it to a pro. Look for a service center that
specializes in Volvo. Make a few phone calls and compare responses. Tell
them you car has the same fuel system and engine as the 81 260 GLE V6.

I didn't mention the rebuilding of fuel distributors on the list, but my
mechanic mentioned a company in Stanton, California that does rebuild both
Bosch fuel distrbutors and computers. The company is called Python
Corporation, and their number is 1-800-959-2865. My mechanic says that he's
used them before, they rebuild the fuel distrbutor on his Porche, and he says
they do good work.

If the car in question is indeed a right-hooker of the original factory conversions, and is
indeed in Mint condition, and taking the current exchange rate, 90,000 Aus Dollars is about
36,000 UKPounds. An original mint right-hooker might well go in the UK for 25,000.
Of course, the price is a little lower because we ARE allowed to register and drive
left-hooker cars here. Supply and demand: there are about 16 original right-hookers in the
world, and I think the general consensus is that these cars lived at the factory as an
"experimental" vehicles (for euro-spec conversion and even bodywork repair practice) hence
there are not many factory-original right-hookers in mint condition...

My steering has started to make a clunky noise when traveling. The
steering doesn't feel loose but the clunky sound is definetly there. I
had the tie rods ends replaced but have yet to get an alignment. The
steering doesn't pull but the wheel does shimmy a bit. I want to get
the tires balanced but NOBODY in southern Maine does on-the-car
balancing. Any idea?

to be honest, don't too much about the D's gearbox, for those who do
- it may help to define 'difficult', ie will the gear lever move into the
1st gear location but not select 1st gear, or is difficult to actually move
the stick into 1st gear location. To me the former may indicate selector
problems, the latter ???

I recently saw the ad on tv for a product called Z-Max. I'm wondering if
anyone has used it and can state if it's just another snake oil or a real
product. I know that slick 50 had similar claims when they started but
have since toned down their claims.
We are looking at protecting our investment in our DeLorean, and would
like to find something that will help keep the engine from feeling the
effects of bad gas, cold starts, and the like...

On Saturday, as I approached a red light, there was a loud bang and a
grinding noise as the left front of my D dropped to the pavement. Had it
towed up to Dana Haglins place in Boulder. The lower left control arm
completely broke.
To make a long story short , I'm trying to run down a used/rebuilt lower
left control arm. Currently, the only one that we've been able to find is
very pricey ($$$$).
Anyone out there have access to used rebuilt parts, or one that could be
salvaged.

I wanted to throw my two cents worth in on the "abrasive" discussion. Pardon
the pun. Be aware that Scotch Brite comes in many flavors, and if you go
with the wrong one, you will be disappointed. The green one, I feel, works
the best. I tried the blue pad, because the store was temporarily out of the
green, and was sorely disappointed. (Mainly sore in the triceps, and
joints.) I was on the way to a car show when I picked up the blue pads, and
luckily I still had a used (well used) green pad, and it got me through the
day. I now own an "award winning" DeLorean, having taken second place. What
a chore it is to keep fingerprints off of the stainless while waiting for the
judges to come by. WO!

Look at the steering column where it goes through the firewall. If there is
any free play (loseness) of the shaft you have a worn-out Steering Wheel
Bushing. Let me know what you find. As far as your alignment is concerned
just go ahead and have a standard balance procedure, you may be lucky and
not need a precision balance.

Almost all oil additives are, more or less by definition, snake oil. I
don't know of any oil additives that aren't.
The best thing to do is to check and see if it contains Teflon (or PTFE).
Slick 50 is an example of such an additive. DuPont won't let any of the
oil makers use the Teflon brand name, because they don't want to get a bad
reputation from it. So, the snake oil makers have to buy cheap, imported
PTFE and cannot call it Teflon. If you see an additive with PTFE, run
away.
Of course, not all oil additives have PTFE. Some of them claim to be, for
example, simply detergents. These aren't as bad, but they are probably
not going to do you any good. Most oil has detergents in it already...
The idea behind PTFE oil additives is that it will coat the friction
surfaces of the engine, and so during those times when there isn't enough
oil (basically at engine startup) the Teflon, which as we all know is very
slippery, will prevent the wear.
There are a couple of problems with this. First, PTFE is a suspended
solid in oil. It does not dissolve to liquid form. This means that what
you have are basically little balls floating in your oil. Your oil
filter, if it is working properly, does the best it can at removing
suspended particles from your oil. This means that one of the primary
effects of PTFE is clogging up your oil filter.
Secondly, the claim they are making is that PTFE cuts down on engine wear
due to friction at startup. The problem with *this* is that although it's
true that engine wear occurs mostly at startup, it's not from excess
friction, but from chemical reactions. The combustion process makes some
pretty fierce acids which eat away at the engine internals. Without the
oil to carry these away, wear is increased. Of course, PTFE (nor any
other oil additive) can't do anything about this. The best thing you can
do to prevent this wear is to let your engine run for 20 or 30 seconds
before you drive off when you start it cold, and to use the proper
viscosity oil. Stay away from 10W40, even though it may be recommended in
the manual; use 10W30, 15W40, or 20W50, depending on conditions.
Thirdly, oil already has zinc (and other compounds) in it which serves
exactly this purpose. Unlike the PTFE, zinc does not clog up your oil
filter. You may have seen the miracle demonstrations where they may put
their oil in an engine, then drain it all out and let it run. Studies
show (and I can find a source for this if anyone cares, and is still
reading) that you can do this just as well with non-treated engines - and
that, more often than not, the untreated engines were actually better off
than the treated ones.
And, lastly but not leastly, oil is complex stuff. It's not just carbon
chains - it is chock full of all kinds of polymers, chemicals, additives,
etc. from the factory. These chemicals frequently have a symbiotic
relationship, where they can work together to achieve more of an effect
than either could alone. The oil companies spend lots of money on R&D to
get the balances of these chemicals just right. Additives, of course,
throw these balances off.

The best thing you can do for that is to drive the car and, when you must
store it, to store it properly. Synthetic oil is probably the next best
thing you can do. Other than that, just worry about the stuff that's
already broken. The PRV engine will easily last for 150, 200, even 300
thousand miles, if it's well taken care of.

I am assuming that car failed at the idle portion of the emissions test. If
so, I would start with rechecking the timing and also adjusting the fuel
mixture at idle. These are not difficult things to do. The problem is you
need a 5 gas analyzer in order to know which way to turn the mixture screw
and by how much to achieve the desired results. You will need to take it
into a shop unfortunately. Good luck.

Awww. It isn't as bad as all that. Let the guy express his opinion; like
the Lucas alternator, we need all the options we can get - even if they
may not necessarily be good ones. It would be easier to get tires for the
larger wheels, for example.
The big problem with aftermarket wheels is that 90% of them, you see and
go, "wow, look at those big shiny wheels." They don't suit the DeLorean
with its elegant, precise styling. Most of them look right at home on a
lowered, sticker-plated Honda.
The DeLorean could probably benefit, from a performance perspective, from
15" fronts and 16" rears. Even if you can find a 16" front that will fit
into the wheel wells without rubbing (we just talked about this), if you
go 16" front, 17" rear you are probably going to have to run different
profiles on the front vs. the rear. In addition to looking a lot sillier
than you may expect, this will adversely affect your handling. Lower
profile tires only improve handling up to a point; past that point, they
make it worse again.
Also don't forget that the bigger the wheels you have, the slower you are
going to accelerate, and the bumpier your ride will be. Wheels weigh more
than tires, so the bigger your wheel, unless you buy exotic materials, the
more mass you'll have in your wheel. And, it's the worst kind - unsprung
rotating mass. The effects of mass in the wheels are multiplied many
times, and the farther the mass is from the hub of the wheel, the worse it
gets.
So, all I ask if you are going to change the wheels, is to do so in a way
that does some good, and not change them just for the sake of changing
them.

I too saw that ad (actually, it's been UC before and at the same price).
However, it's not really a good example of the price of DeLoreans in
Australia. We bought ours (an RHD '82 model) for substantially less, and
there is currently a LHD DeLorean in Melbourne listed at $35,000 (you can
check it out at www.intercar.com.au - type "DeLorean" into the search field).
I believe you would pay nearly as much as that "concours winner" if you were
to import one from the USA, because there are so many fees, duties and taxes
involved that it'd drive you 'round the bend (not to mention the low
exchange rates)! Plus, the RTA (in NSW at least) requires that all imported
vehicles be converted to RHD for them to be considered road-worthy.
Anyway, that's my 2 cents...

I can't speak for how the DeLorean handles in the snow but I can tell you
that mine performed quite well on ice. I bought my DeLorean a couple of
winters ago in Chicago and ended up driving it back to Kansas through some
pretty rough winter storms. It easily out performed my Camaro on the ice (if
that's any comparison). However I would not recommend driving a DeLorean in
the winter for fear of damage resulting from a collision.

There was some talk earlier about the brown stains on the dash and how to
remove them. My problem is with the binnacle. It was dried out and had a
crack in the middle. I took it to an upholstery guy we reccomend to our
clients. He stitched a tight cover right onto the binnacle while it was
removed. It looks great and now the sun can't harm it any further. Even
if you bought a new binnacle you may want to have something like that made
to cover it. If anyones interested I do have pics. I live just outside
St. Louis so if anyone wants one made while they are here for the Expo let
me know and I can put you intouch w/the business that made mine.

If simple additives could help the longevity of a cars mechanical parts and
there by reduce warranty costs for manufacturers, they'd be installed at the
factory. Don't kid yorself, warranty cost eat heavily into profits. Many of
these products don't harm things but they don't do much of anything. Spend
the money on top grade lubricants instead.

I ran across another flick with a DMC in it. A slightly cheezy film, "Malibu
Express" (1985) with Darby Hinton, Sybil Danning, & a bevy of beauties.
About a TX P.I. in CA. He drives a red DeLorean with black int. & the way it
is driven seems to be auto. He takes on a white Fiero on drag, losing by
1/2 a length! (poooor driving) Another one for the video library?! PS
I have an Amsoil filter & oil in my car, & don't think I will put in
additives. This is the ORIGINAL synth. oil producing GREAT results.

white sidewalls.

removing minor blemishes and/or scratches on your
DeLorean's finish! These pads are NOT stainless steel

finish. If you use ANY type of metal scrubbing pads make
sure they are of stainless steel construction.

bty- If I need to use an experienced DMC service center, my 1st choice right now is Delorean Services regardless of the distance to be traveled (That could be a bonus if I drive ; ).

Recently, I replaced the plugs in my D and purchased them through PJG. In
talking to them, they suggested to use the copper version of this plug as it
lasts just about as long as the silver, works just as good, and costs much
less. They also suggested against using the platinum version as they have
noticed the results not being as good as the other two types. If I recall,
it is the DC version.
I purchased the Copper version and I haven't had any problems out of it.

I think we need to put the "performance" into perspective. Remember that
this is a 1981-83 automobile. Comparing its performance to a new Mustang
5.0 or the like is simply unfair. Remember that it was never sold or
advertised as a high performance vehicle.
With a quoted 0-60 time in the 10 second range and a top speed of 125+, it
is neither a dragster nor a $70,000 911 - - but the 5 speed is adequately
quick for most of its owners.
Its handling is excellent and it will hold its own with many cars with
greater horsepower when properly driven on twisting and turning roads.
Isn't that what sports cars are all about?

Hello everyone,
My trunk release cable quit working. I've tried using vise gripps on
the cable
but no luck. Does anyone know the exact way to access the trunk and how
to release the trunk. Knut suggested lifting up on one side but also
added it might crease the trunk lid. Also from beneath the car there
is a access pannel
but how do you actulally release the latch. I'm about to run out of gas
, and my Delorean tech manual is also in the trunk.

We are in the process of dyno testing stock and modified Deloreans.
In March this year we tested a stock 5-speed Delorean with 20,000 miles
on it.
The car made 100 HP at the wheels with a maximum of 134 ft lbs torque.
This actual at the wheels testing shows unfortunately that the D was not
a performance car for its actual weight of 3200+ lbs.
We are looking for a Turbo car to Dy no test. Any volunters in the
chicago area would be appreciated.

From a chemists point of view platinium would probably be the best choice,
it would be the optimum metal of the choices for a combination of
conductivity, durability, and catalytic ability. In the environment of an
internal combustion engine I doubt whether the difference is much more than
theory. My 2 cents...

I know of several DeLorean's equipped with the Centerforce Clutch,
including mine. I had it put on because of the solid reputation of
Centerforce among performance enthusiasts and because I have twin turbos.
I figured that it might be a better clutch with the added HP. I can't say
that I notice any significant difference, but I guess the real test will
be the long haul.

This procedure should be handled by a shop that specializes in frame
repair. Frame dimensions and mechanical drawing can be found in your
Workshop Manual at R:02:02-03. If you don't have this information we can
supply you with a copy.
I would suggest that you repair the frame first, in other words, "fix the
foundation before you paint the house".

I would not recommended a center force clutch for a D. I bought one
years ago when my stock clutch died. After installing it PROPERLY, the
counter weight would not clear the pressure plate. I eventually had to
remove them. Go with a stock clutch pack.

We use Centerforce pressure plates exclusively for all of our clutch
replacements. As a result of their centrifical counterweight design they
require less pedal pressure, a welcome change to the normally hard pedal.
Additionally Centerforce has always been a name associated with top quality
clutch components.

Chester try tying the cable into a loop to form a sort of handle it isnt
easy cause in order to do that you have to stretch the outer cable which
has the PVC coating which is fixed under the Hood. Then by carefully
kneeling in the correct position and tuging on the cable at right angles to
the car and lifting the hood with your other hand you will just manage to
pull the catch enough to release the hood.......

Once open you can temporaryily breath a sigh of relief and put the can
opener away. What to do next think yourself lucky and order a new cable
from DMC Houston or other approved stockist of such fine gear.
i was told that there is a boot under the front drivers side wheel arch
which if you remove the wheel you may be able to gain access to the
hood...even if you could get your hand through it you have to figure out
how to peel back the carpet and other fine stuff you may have there also to
get to the latch which is located just off centre and works by the cable
pulling on a spring in the oppostie direction in order to affect the
release.
Other suggestiongs put to me at the time were try bending a wire coathanger
and pulling back on it from the passenger side....yeah right

This explains some of the problems, and "our" (ie in the UK) way of overcoming them. 167
horses is what the first car (an auto) registered on a rolling road. I would also like to
point out that the modification is completely reversible and many people over here drive their
D's for the love and not for the performance, and hence do not go for it.

Try a product called On & Off by Mary Kate. This is commonly available at marine supply stores
(Boat US, West Marine...) and works very well to clean rust stains off fiberglass as well as
stainless steel hardware.

I am probably wrong, but I thought the DeLorean weight was much less than
this. Somewhere around 2700 to 2800 pounds? This would make a difference when
comparing the horsepower to pound ratios.

I guess this could turn into another "oil" argument. So in respect to our
moderators I will try to end it right here. The factory supplied Bosch HR 6
DS plugs give excellent performance and usually will last 60K miles without
failure.
Bosh advertises the Platinum version as their ultimate plug. It contains a
99.9% center electrode which has a melting point of 3200 F, higher than any
other metal used in automotive spark plugs. No matter what plug you use
just be sure it's Bosch.
BTW my D has always had the Platinum plugs, it now has 260K miles and still
going.

Bob,
The counter weights are on the backside of the pressure plate, there is
several inches of clearance between the back of the pressure plate and the
bell housing, I don't understand your clearance problem. It is possible you
tried to install a Centerforce disc. Centerforce does not make a disc
(clutch plate) that fits the DeLorean.

Okay, I had to ring Dave Howarth this evening about the upcoming Coys festival, and so asked
him about this car. He came up with a lot of information - I just hope I can remember it!
[BTW, Dave has just bought his FOURTH DeLorean. He now owns the car in Back From The Future -
the right-hooker formerly owned by John Taylor of Duran Duran]
1) The car is STILL at Lotus in Norwich. It is sitting in a yard of test/prototype cars used
for everything from crash tests to bodywork.
2) Usually such cars are destroyed or recycled within 8 weeks BUT this is one of the original
DMC prototypes from before Lotus' involvement. Nobody can officially claim ownership, so
although Dave and Simon have both attempted to buy it, there is no owner to sell it!
3) It is the same as the car on the cover of the DeLorean portfolio - not the same car - one
of four with 4 cylinder engines built for promotional purposes. The one at Lotus was shipped
over for experimentation by Lotus.
4) It has the two-piece chassis ditched by Lotus for the backbone frame.
5) The only glass in place is the windscreen.
6) It has a grey interior, UNlike the brown prototypes.
7) The interior is now green :o)
8) The bonnet opens in the same way as the production cars.
9) Until you speak to the "right" people, Lotus will deny its existence.
10) The opinion of it when it drove was that it was awful - and VERY unsafe in that chassis
design.
11) Don't expect to turn up at Lotus and to go and see it - Simon and Dave had to wait a long
time to be invited, and they were very wary of the Cameras. Only Simon was allowed to take
photos and then ONLY of that car!
If you want to see that car moved, keep trying with Lotus! Dave said if he ever got his hands
on it, he'd take the restoration project on, and eventually donate it to the museum in Belfast
with the original wooden mock-up. A realistic price given him by Colin Chapman's son (who Dave
has done work for) would be twice its scrap value - and that would be well under ú1000 in
total. Unfortunately, having nothing to do with Lotus himself other than a cordial
relationship, he couldn't help.

I had a similar problem- my latch clip fell off the pin holding the cable to
the trunk latch. I obtained a flathead screwdriver (~6" long), & came in
from the windshield side, moving the latch out of the way (toward pass.
side). Had trunk open in <10 min.! Reattached clip & also attached aux.

DMC Joe,
I installed a Centerforce pressure clutch in my D about 15 years ago The original clutch was
not strong enough to handle the extra load of my Rajay turbo. It works great but instead of
having a very soft pedal pressure, it takes an awful lot of foot pressure to push the pedal.
What could be the problem?

The DeLorean and Lotus engineers spent untold hours in specifying the wheel
and tire size to compensate for the 35/ 65 front to rear weight ratio. All
types of dimensional perimeters were taken into account to insure the best
possible handling characteristics not to mention safety concerns.

Not true! If you use a larger wheel, and lower profile tires you can
get the radius pretty close to "stock", and keep the speedometer within
reasonable accuracy.
Along the same thread, I really like the look of the stock wheels, but
they are a real pain to keep clean! I say this because if you are
interested in buying some after market wheels, get a design that is not
hard to clean.

I have looked at the plugs, but never tried them. The only advantage I
see is that you are giving a bit more surface area for the spark, but
only on one electrode! I question how much improvement will be seen,
and even if it does exist if it is worth the price.

I'm closing the thread on Centerforce Clutches, Sparkplugs and Chester's
Trunk/Bonnet/Hood, at least for the time being.
What we are trying to do by shortening these threads is keep the list and
its archives to a manageable size and create less of a chat room atmosphere
without putting a damper on a true exchange of information. Search the
archives. They contain a wealth of information. Further, any DeLorean
owner who does not have the three part Bible - Workshop Manual, Parts
Manual and Service Bulletins - is cheating himself.

Minor detail but it bugged me not to have everything working. My clock worked fine for a year after I got the car. It is the clock built into the console in my 81. It got so it changed time on me a lot. I have worked with electronics mo

I thought, after a year of owning the car, that it did not seem to turn over very fast in starting. Finally one day it did not start at all. I took the battery to the dealer, who checked it out.....bad cell. They gave me a new battery un
I reset the clock and for 6 months now it has been running perfectly. And the car starts quickly now! Apparently the low voltage when I started the car would not run the clock for that period, so it was always "OFF". In my "other" hobby

This is not necessarily the case. The speedometer reading (and the
handling; don't forget that) will only be adversely affected if the tire
diameter changes. If you put on a larger wheel, you simply put on a lower
profile tire to compensate. For example the DeLorean stock front wheel
has 195/60R14 size tires, which have a diameter of 590mm (if my math is
right!) You could, for example, get 205/50R15 tires which have a diameter
of 586mm - a difference in size of less than 1%, even though the wheel is
1" larger.
(Background info: Tires are measured www/ppRdd where "www" is the width in
millimeters; "pp" is the profile, or ratio of sidewall height to tire
width; and "dd" is the diameter of the wheel. Using this information you
can compute a proper size tire for almost any wheel.)

An alternative is to put an electrolytic capacitor across the power
leads going to the clock. This will store enough voltage to carry the
clock through the momentary voltage dips experienced during starting.
The capacitor I used is 100mfd @ 50VDC. It has been working fine for
the past year.

I found a nice D that had been sitting for 2 years. Using a 200 amp
charger/starter and the old battery I got it to start when I sprayed
some starter fluid in the air intake. So, I know that it had spark
then. However, it then quit starting and I have checked for a high
voltage spark at the coil and now don't get one.
Using an ohm meter I have evidence that the problem is in the
distibutor--as per pages m:01:03 and m:01:04 of the workshop manual. I
wonder if I blew the pick-up coil or diode . How hard is it to replace?
I'm not sure that I have it in me to take out the distibutor.

are there on the DeLorean. The more I hear and read about this the more
I'm beginning to think that a "good driver DeLorean", say between $10K
and $15K, is worth far more being parted out. Body panels, doors, glass,
and lower control arms alone would probably bring $10K selling them one
at a time. James, do you have any idea how many parts listed in the
DeLorean factory parts manual are "no longer available"? Being in the
DeLorean parts business I thought you might have an estimate. I know
that for much older and long obsolete antique cars in concours condition
most parts are nearly non-existent. If needed, replacements parts of all
kinds have to be made. That's why some of these cars are worth hundreds
of thousands of dollars and even millions. Do you have any idea what it
would cost to have a lower control arm made for a DeLorean? $500 might
pay for a construction drawing. For a one-off I would guess at least
several thousand dollars.

"gross" weight is the total weight of the vehicle with the maximum load
recommended by the manufacturer. Since this was a 2-seater. the factory
probably figured two 200 lb. people and 68 pounds of luggage or some other
combination adding up to that amount.
Look at the door plate of a pickup truck sometime. A lot of the full size
trucks will have really LARGE gross vehicle weights since they are designed
to haul stuff around.

The GVW is the weight of the car plus (payload) what the manufacturer
considers as the maximum additional weight load i.e.: passengers, luggage,
etc. (GVW minus curb weight equals payload) Therefore
the 468 pounds would mean 2 passengers at 200 lb. and 68 lb. of luggage.

cars in my life (age 78) and have had every configuration. Four
wheel drive, front wheel drive, rear engines...mid engine..you name
it. My old 36 Cord Front wheel drive was terrible in the
snow. I had a 3 cylinder DKW Front wheel drive that was pretty
light and it seemed to do fairly well. I had several little
Fiats...all rear engine and rear wheel drive.. They were excellent in the
snow too. I still have a mint 65 Corvair, which incidentally is another
six cylinder rear engined car (but there the similarity ends). It is
the best car we have ever had for ice and snow....that rear engine over the rear
wheels and with automatic just can't be beat. We keep it partly
because my wife says that is her winter car and she wont drive anything else in
snow or ice. I think the DeLorean with its wide tires might tend to skate
more.....I only have all season tires on the Corvair and never have needed
chains in the deepest snow.</DIV>

A very very brave man, if I was offered your keys I would hand them back,
you would be one very sad puppy if anyone hit it while you was in meetings.
My son recently visited Arizona with me and drove my car without me being
present my heart was in my mouth the whole time he was out. However it had
to happen sometime, the next traumatic experience will be when dauther
wants to do the same.

I was browsing the DOA website when I came across this pic in the "Showcase"
section. A French man has made a cool modification to his DeLorean - a
rear-vision system consisting of a surveillance camera mounted on the parcel
shelf, and a small black & white monitor on the dash above the radio. I know
of a place that does "Knight Rider" conversions to Trans Ams, and they have
two monitors (one colour, and the other b/w) built into the dash, but this
rear-vision system is a neat idea for any car :-)

I was cleaning the interior vinyl portions of my corvette last night
and used
Tricloroethane (also referred to as T 1.1.1. I think , you can buy it
at Home Depot as a carpet / spot remover and I think it goes by the
brand name Afta) to remove some spots that soap and water / Fantastic
etc. wouldn't clean. It worked great, may be even too good ( I think
it will take the paint right off the vinyly if you're not careful).
This is a nasty solvent! Probably causes liver damage and cancer and I
believe it desolves some types of plastics ectà I'm not recommending
that anyone use this but with all the talk about Acetone and MEK I
would like to know if this solvent is little better to use on vinyl
when you need to use a very strong solvent degreaser?

There were two different manufacturers plates used.
The early one is part no. 105196 and has a GVW of 3180, 1244 front and 1936
rear.
The later one is part no. 110573 and has a GVW of 3244, 1286 front and 1958
rear.
Where is the cutoff? I haven't discovered that yet, though I would imagine
it to be at the 81/82 model year. All the 82/83's I have seen have the
later, while all the 81's I have seen have the early one. Why the change of
64 pounds?

I do not believe this type of setup would be illegal. A few years back
(beggining of 90's) I saw a thing on the news about cars of the future. And
they were showing how rearview mirrors could be replaced with cameras.
I don't see how this would be illegal, this setup would be more of a monitor
than a TV. Television is illegal in the front seat only, and it is because
it distracts the driver. Look at these new mini vans that are coming out.
They are building them with TV and VCR.

stereo head units you can get which include a video display. It is simply
illegal to use these to display a television image, such as a TV station
or VCR tape. You can use them for a GPS navigation system (the most

watching shows on, it's for backing up and keeping an eye on what's behind
you. The better units can be set to only turn on when you put the car in
reverse (relay atached to the reverses safety switch). THey also useually
have a screen over the tube with marks on it to show you where your wheels
and the side of your vehicle will line up while you are backing up.
Putting one of these units in a DeLorean would be a GREAT idea thanks to
it's poor rear visibility.

Actually it is legal to have a monitor that shows the rear view as many large
motor homes have them for rear view visibility. Of course watching Back To

Just wanted to let everyone know about a great car event that'll take place
October 1-3 in Evansville, Indiana. It's the Club MCC Autofest National '99.
I went last year and had a blast, and there were 6 DeLoreans there.
This is a great opportunity to meet other owners as well as see some awesome
cars. The event is put on by the folks that produce "My Classic Car" which
airs on TNN on Saturday and Sunday afternoons.
They're really hyping it up this year adding Carlisle and Kruse Inc. to the
list of sponsors. I got my notice about the show yesterday, and it says

Several years ago someone was selling custom forged aluminum lower control
arms for the DeLorean. I belive the price at the time was about $900 per
pair, minus ball joints. If I remember right, the old DeLorean Club of
America was selling them. I know that Don Steger of the DeLorean Motor
Center bought the remaining items that defunct club had. He also has done
some things with brakes and other suspension items. on his own. He might be
able to offer some insight if someone is really interested.

Although I have been a DeLorean fan since the 1980s, I didn't become a part
of the "DeLorean Community" (i.e., a reader of this list, and other DeLorean
publications) until 1995. On occasion through the years, I would hear a
mention of the DeLorean Club of America that apparently became defunct
sometime in the past. Ive seen stainless steel label kits, Guiguaro emblems,
and other DMC products from this old group, however I have never heard
anything else about them. When did they shut down operations?àand why? Im
just very intrigued.

The last couple years a group of us from the Mid-States Delorean Club
have participated in this car show in Evansville. It is a very good show and
with sponsorship by Chrysler and national TV coverage, it is getting bigger
all the time. Two years ago the shows host, Dennis Gage, did a feature on our
group and the Deloreans and we even made it on one of the TV episodes of "My
Classic Car".
Anyway, for anyone interested, the show this year is being held the
weekend BEFORE the DOA Expo in St Louis. For anyone interested in making it a
long week and doing both shows, we'd love to have you join us. Our club is
once again planning on attending.
Evansville is about a 2 1/2 hour drive southeast of St Louis on
Interstate 64. Our club also blocks out a bunch of rooms at a local motel
and receives group rates for this event. E-mail me directly at Wingd2@aol.com

Steel wool is ok if you are certain that it is stainless steel wool.
Try using Scotch Brite and a restaurant grade stainless steel cleaner. This
cleaner is abrasive so be careful not to rub using a circular motion, but go
with the "grain" of the finish. Most of these cleaners also act as a sealer
so that fingerprints don't "stick" as easily.
A non-abrasive cleaner you might try is "CLR" ("C"alcium-"L"ime-"R"ust). It
is available in most stores that carry a comprehensive stock of household
cleaners. This is a highly corrosive cleaner so be sure to read the label
carefully. You should try diluting it first with an equal amount of hot
water. If that doesn't work try using it full strength taking appropriate
precautions to protect yourself and other surfaces such as anything painted
and upholstery. It is "guaranteed" to work.

Just looked for James' seatcovers on the delorean.com site and noticed they now say....

Please contact your favorite DeLorean Parts Vendor
Find it kind of funny because in the paragraph before this he makes reference to "..paying a Delorean parts vendor an exorbitant sum for leather seat covers".
I was under the impression this was a great product! (Knut gave it a "thumbs up" in one of his newsletter reviews). What happened?

Well I dont know the exact cost. I bought one that was in really nice shape
and I did alot of updates. However I recently took it to a DeLorean Center
and updated more items like the window motors, alternator, Lock module and so
on. I spent 2400.00 just the other day with parts and labor but if you want
a DeLorean that is completely reliable and one you know you can count on its
good to update as many items as you can.
