Question for the group:
I have had my D for a year now, and I have not been able to get rid of a problem. When my engine is cold, I have all the power I can handle in any gear, as fast as I have wanted to go.
However, when the engine heats up (perhaps 15 miles of highway driving), I can't get the car to move above about 70 MPH / 3K RPM in 5th. At about 67 mph, the car begins to shake a little. The acceleration problem soon affects all the gear
Today's 100 mile trip took much too long- how am I going to make it to St. Louis in October like this?
We thought the problem was a vacuum leak, but that on first inspection does not appear to be the problem. We could not change one spark plug when we bought the car, but that could not cause this problem, could it? The car idles fine (800

I would like to thank everyone who came out yesterday for what I think was
the first North Carolina Delorean meeting. I hope that everyone returned
home safely. I enjoyed myself and I hope that everyone else did.
We had five Deloreans at our meet and all of them were 81 models. (My
Delorean being the youngest one there. But not by much )
I am sure that there will be another meet in the future. When we do I hope
that the people that were unable to come to this meet can come to it.

My DMC has been sitting idle for approx. 16 months and I wanted to start driving it again. However, my DMC is not willing to cooperate. It will not start so I wanted to post a few messages to see if I can get some help in getting it start
The engine cranks but does not start. I suspect a fuel pump problem since I cannot smell gasoline. Also, the fuse for the fuel pump was blown. I replaced the fuse but it still does not start. What is the best way to troubleshoot a start

As I continue to work the bugs out of my 11-day old (to me, anyway) car,
there were some things I expected, like belts, hoses, etc.
When I started the car this morning, though, I had a new issue. Upon
starting the car, the oil light was on and the pressure gauge was way
above 80. When I turn the car off it sits at 60. I just had the oil
and filter changed last week (6.5 quarts were used). I checked the
dipstick and it reads low, but there are only a couple of drops
underneath the car (which have been happening, due to a slight leak on
the timing cover).
Could this be the oil pump? Should I add more oil? Any suggestions
would be appreciated.

If you are truly interested in attending a delorean meeting you may need to
drive the miles. The first meeting i ever went to was in greenville, AL. I
live in New Orleans. I had to drive about 300 miles just to get there but
it was well worth it.
Take some time reading the DML till you find a meeting in a nearby state and
go make some new friends when you hear about a meeting.

Hello,
My father & I have owned 3254 an automatic (this is a good thing
considering my ego), Gray interior, hood lines, no gas flap and a
butchered passenger side front antenna, he purchased in 1985 for Mr.
Paul Reinhart of Texas. My dad bought the car for $12K and brought it
home to Colorado with 8,000 miles on it, currently it has 28,000 miles.
I have read 90% of the archive and have learned a lot about the car and
the people who post to the board often.
My car is currently having some long overdue work/updates done and I
would have missed quite a few things without this fine resource (i.e.
Trailing arm bolts). I know I will continue to use this site for
reference as well as entertainment. I have even been out to DMCJoe's
website, I can't wait until he gets it all done. Joe when are you going
to come to Colorado for house calls, I'm not sure I want to tangle with
a door adjustment? Just kidding.
FYI, I am having the work done by a long time freind / mechanic, he has
worked on every car imaginable for about 30 years and so far parts have
cost me a lot more than labor, because he loves having the car to show
to some of his regular, Porche, NSX, & BMW customers. After I get this
work done I plan on taking over the maintenance & care of the car
myself. If I lived close to one of the service centers I would have
probaly taken it to them. As it is I have used most authorized Delorean
service center for parts with a preference toward PJ Grady. They are
always freindly and Rob knows his stuff.
I do have a couple of questions/comments:
1. I found the original window sticker for the car . It was sold out of
R.O. Evans Pontiac-GMC, CO. Dallas Texas with a sticker price of
$26,825.00 isn't it likely it sold for more than this? FYI the sticker
states the car should get 18 MPH with an annual fuel cost of around
$1,291 @ $1.55 per gallon.
2. I found in an old De Gull Wing magazine, July/August 1984, Vol. 3,
#1 an add for a voice & intelligence monitor for the D. Did anyone on
the list ever have one? It was supposed to monitor 13 functions
including things like: keys in ignition, Low fuel, low oil pressure,
ext. and give a voice alert. I don't really want one, however, I would
like to know if they worked, if it was hard to install and if it was as
annoying as I think it could be?
3 I also have a few "THE SILVER DREAM" publications. The official
publication of Delorean Motor Club of Texas, does this club still exist
as it appears from the publication they were in a spot of trouble with
one of their founders?
4. I also ran across in De Gull Wing, March/April 82? Volume 2,
Number 5 a Troubleshooting Diagnostic Chart - Fuel Injection, Lambda
Control & Idle Speed Control. Does anyone on the list know anything
about this chart and it is a useful tool in diagnosing problems?
I do believe an original D is much more attractive than one that has
been modified with paint, ground effects and other external additions,
although many I've seen are very good looking. Upgrades in the
mechanical reliability of the car is an entirely different story, if
the car is running great due to these upgrades than the owner has more
time to enjoy the thrill of the ride over the thrill of being under the
hood.

In theory, you don't have to check out the DuPont Registry. All you have
to do is to sign up on the egroups list that infers that it is the official
site for announcements about the "new DeLorean".

Dear list,
Lot of speculation is nice. But here is some solid info. It isn't
much, but it is something. I actually met with Delorean yesterday, and
he denied the recent list reports about his new car being stainless
steel and having a convertible version. He told me that the car was
made out of some special materials and that the car can do well under 3
seconds in its 0-60 times. It will have the Delorean gull-wing doors.
No release date though. We must wait, but remember, all good things
come to those who wait.

As I followed the link, it brought up (and back) quite a few questions.
Here we go!
1.) I noticed the one listed as 'prototype.' <http://www.dupontregi

Now could this be the final 'prototype' made? (since it resembles the
prod. model with power windows)
2.) How many prototypes exactly were made? (I've heard between 2
and 4)
3.) Also what would its VIN be? Prior to #00500 is my guess. Or
somewhere between 00502 and 00614 (00670? what was the number?? I dont
have the page in front of me right now) which brings up...
4.) Where is #00501?? never heard mention of it before anywhere.
5.)how many of the 'testing cars' are known to still be around?? I
have knowledge of 500, 502, 514, and 570 (owned by a gentleman also on
the DML -would you care to shed light on the subject since you own one
of these in speculation?). An article in a past DeLorean World issue
(dont remember which, near the back end of the first binderful if you
have them) with a picture of the a car with a title of "DeLorean Motor
Company Training Car" on its VIN-plate if I recall.
Since that paticular car was sent back to the factory and was going to
be dismantled, but was sold instead, wouldnt that require it be given a
VIN?? I'm curious as to if it would be stuck in early as an 81 or if
this was after the last car, the gold one, #20105, it was possibly
given 20106 or if there were others, an even higher # VIN?
In the DW article accompianing the picture, it talks about 3 cars of
the 150 or so crash test cars were the only one's known to survive.
I'll be damned if I can't remember those VIN numbers, but I do know 2
were of the 500's and one in the 600's. (570 was not one of them)
And after reading a page from the Great DeLorean FAQ,

brings up...
What ever happened to the 'black cars' made from fiberglass? I came
to understand they were later dismantled, but there has got to be a
picture, or story on them somewhere on them. ANYONE?? Were they given
actual VIN's (possibly explaing why the production cars started at
#00500?)
I have also come to a conclusion that the were at least 2255 DeLoreans
produced and sold as 1983 models, by using the FAQ and
delorean.com/chronology.html pages. Follow me here...
~The FAQ says:
83
VIN 15000-
VIN 16000- Primarily handled by KAPAC (Consolidated) as middleman
VIN 17000- Approximately 100 cars produced for Canadian market (SSI)
VIN 20000-20104 Cars assembled by plant managers after plant closed.
Last car produced 12/24/82 (SSI).
VIN 20105 Gold plated, last car manufactured. Raffled off by
subsidiary of Consolidated (now KAPAC).
And here I add my discoveries to this...assuming they didnt cut a
series short and/or skip VIN's:
------1983------
VIN 15000- I am assuming 1000 cars produced, the chronology has
15111 to 15880.
VIN 16000- Once again 1000 cars, Chronology has 16000-16693
VIN 17000- The Canadian Cars, (how many 'made it/are still' in
Canada? only 2 of the 6 that are on the chronology show they are, one
of them [17115 to an un-named owner] even ended up in the Netherlands.)
The previous says 100 cars, but chronology says there is a 17106,
17115 and 17149 all made either in or after September 82 so at least
150 produced.
VIN 20000-20104 accounted for, 104 or 103 cars made.
VIN 20105- accounted for, resides in Cumberland Maryland (I really
need to drive over there someday since I reside in NW'ern Maryland too)
Also were the zero-numbered cars from the beginning of a VIN series
made? I am talking about ones like xx000.
I only know for sure there was a vin 500 and vin 16000. How about
11000, 12000, 15000, 17000, and 20000.
I know that there is most likely no car with a VIN 10000, I have talked
with a guy who has the last 81, vin 7199 and the first 82, 10001 (both
for sale incidentally). Does that mean that those zero-numbered cars
were never made? just started at the x0001?
And yet another from James Espey in the wonderful back issues...
"...In Ireland a few years back, I saw one of the RHD cars
converted at the company's request that was VIN 12174, with a build
month of May 1982..."
-Assuming they didnt skip over any VIN's, wouldn't that change the
1126 figure for 1982? (as well as the final count of 8583 to 9630!)
pushing it to at least 2173?? Even http://www.dmcnews.com/chronology.h
tml shows VIN's above the 1126 (ex: 11152, 11156, 11262, 11529, 11532,
11554, 11594, and yes, 12174) which means the 1982 VIN's would have
stopped at about VIN 11127. As we can see, they did not.
and Mr Espey also said:
"I recently came into possession of a computer print out of VINs,
interior color, transmission type and engine block# for 1982 cars up to
11126. This will be incorporated into the DeLorean Production
Chronology when it is updated next month."
was this ever added??? If not I'd like to get a copy of it James, if
possible to incorporate it into my studies. Also since this was only
for 1982, if the other's were not desroyed, the is most likely one for
1981, and even possibly one for 83, although not likely.
If I take more time to think about this I could probably come up with a
lot more questions, especially for 1981 cars since I really didnt touch
much on that year, (here's a 1981 ques: why did the 81 VIN's stop at
7199??? They weren't at the end of the year either)
So in conclusion on the VIN's I'd say there were approximatly:
6699 cars made for 1981, not 6640 or 6539
at least 2173 cars made for 1982, not 1126
and at least 2254 cars made for 1983, not 918
making a grand total of 11126 (whoa!! coincidence the previous thought
for 82 was 1126??) DeLoreans produced, not including the pre VIN 500
cars or excluding the test cars or ones that were totalled or cars not
accounded for on the Chronology study, but were between ones listed,
for example, 6924 and 6938 were listed, but ones inbetween were not.
all those were counted.
I also strongly incourage any of you oth ther to get in contact with me
if you have a VIN list/story of your own (DMC Joe and Darryl Tinnerset
come to mind as mentioned they did in the past).
In the next month or so, fellow DML'er and DeLorean owner Sam Commarato
and myself, John Heflin will be releasing our web-page that we have
been working on for most of the past half-year, titled "The DeLorean
VIN Project" we try to answer most of the questions involved with the
DeLorean VIN number, and how it works, as well as provide each DeLorean
its own single page, listed in order by its Last 5 digits of its VIN
number, as well as Photos of their car, along with a type written
account by the owner, of their car.

I doubt www.delorean.com is anything official.
A quick PING will tell you that www.dmcnews.com is the same machine as
www.delorean.com. You dont even need to do that. Compare
http://www.dmcnews.com/ to http://www.delorean.com/ They are the same.
I sent James mail asking him about this a few weeks ago, but go no
reply.
Assuming that DMC Houston actually owns the "DeLorean" name, and James
works for them, there may be some connection that way. Maybe JDZ is
working with DMC Houston in some way?

If you did not properly prepare the car for storage, it is possible that
all of the rubber parts in the fuel tank are now a bunch of black mush
in the tank. If this is the case, the worst thing you can do is try and
start the car. The black mush will then clog up the fuel injection
system.
Pop the pump out of the tank, and take a look.

My British car club is having their second annual car show in Lavallette, NJ
Sunday,July 25. We are set-up to have a class for DeLoreans. Last year we
had over 70 British cars. Trophies and door prizes. Goody bags with sign-up.
Cars are parked on the bay-front. Car show is in conjunction with the
Lavallette Heritage Art Fair. Check out the cars, meet new people, check out

Ok, while reworking the fuel system I managed to send the fuel pump
dome nut rocketing bewteen the GRP body and the fuel tank... I think it
landed somewhere between the tank and the frame, but I'm not sure. So
the question of the day is: Is this a standard part? Could I possibly
find it at an auto parts store or home depot or someplace? I'd order
from a parts supplier, but I hate to just order one single nut (and
wait for a week for it to arrive).

Look closely and you'll see that neither of these are patents that JZD
received. They merely reference previous patents (from the 1960's) that
DeLorean had a role in obtaining (they actually belong to GM).

Hi all....I have this DeLorean pamphlet probably from a dealership (you know,
one with the specs and all),and the picture on it has a different set of
windows on the car. Instead of the small one that rolls down on all other
DMC's I've been blessed to see, it has a vertical line seperating two panes
of glass. (In the middle of course.) I'm just curious as to what that's all
about? Was it a prototype car or what?

It does not look like any of those are DeLorean patents. They are
patents that reference older patents by DeLorean. The automotive
related patents from your search reference DeLorean patents that are
older. The search below only returns patents from 1998-1999.
With a wider search, I found 4,557,232 and 4,515,113 "Swash Plate
Engine" from May 1985. John Z DeLorean is the inventor. This may be the
design being discussed for the "New D". Maybe one of the mechanic type
lawyers on the list can decode the full text, but here is the abstract-
" Abstract: The swash plate engine is provided with an Aspin type rotary
valve system with a variable compression capability. The engine may be
of four-piston type or six-piston type. The size of the combustion
chambers can be changed from time to time to vary the compression ratio.
The engine may also be coupled with an accumulator to store the energy
of braking for subsequent acceleration of the engine. "
In May of 1994, A similar patent was filed (5,437,251) which added a
supercharger to a similar motor. It is not obvious if the inventors
have any connection to DeLorean.
Recently it seems like there a quite a bit of secrecy around what is
going on with the car. I am not sure why, but I assume there is a valid
reason. It is obvious that the DML (or members of the DML) are somehow
involved with the situation. The excitement is building, I hope we get
some answers soon before we loose interest.

how hard is it to install a new fuel accumulator? my D runs fine, but
when i try to start it up after driving it, it take a couple tries to
get it going. other than that it has no problem. i dont want to give

I know I'm going to get flamed for what I am about to say, but I hope

ToM's <Team of Moderaters> let me post this as I accept full
respondiblity for it.
What ever the "final" count for the VIN's is, we must subtract 500
from it.
The reason I say this is because <and I hate to burst the bubble here,
but....
the first 500 VIN's NEVER EXISTED!!!! I have talked to someone very
close to
JZD and he said that the first cars <after crash testing> where sent to
reporters. The reporters claimed the DeLorean was "a worthless piece of
junk
that would be best left in the garbage can" <I didnt say it, they did>.
Naturally JZD was mad at this and talked to my friend about ways to
sqaush
these storys. Finally several storys where made up ranging from the
first 500
cars where given to the government to be crash tested and destroyed to
they where sold to the Arabs to be destroyed. Whatever the story, the
cars where
always destroyed. But this was all make believe because the cars didnt
exist.
JZD told reporters that the "bugs" where worked out with the demise of
the 500
cars.
My friend has credability because he recently sent a 300 VIN to
Germany to be sold.

referances from 1974 till 1999) and looked at number D306,274. This may be
why the firestar 500 isn't going to be the next DeLorean... It looks like
Ferrari picked that one up in '87

I went through this exercise a few months ago. First, start at the fuel tank.
Then work you way along the fuel path to the engine checking out components as
you go.
Here are the results of my experience. The gas in the tank was mush. The
fuel pump was mush. The sender unit was mush. If you find mush anywhere in
the fuel system, chances are there is mush everywhere.
Corrective action: The gas tank was removed and professionally steam cleaned.
The fuel pump, the sender unit, and all associated small parts were replaced
including the large rubber boot at the mouth of the fuel tank. Next, the
filter and all rubber lines were replaced. All steel lines were purged. Then
the fuel distributor was dismantled and thoroughly cleaned. Finally all six
injectors were replaced.
Guess what? She runs like a top now. That's all you have to do! (You might
have to wait until payday. The aforementioned fix ain't cheap.)

VIN 3xx...wow, and that reminds me, I remember reading about a VIN 215
(or close to that) somewhere before, possibly DW, and anybody know
anything about that car?
Also painted DeLoreans have got me intrested (maybe cause I am buying a
black one :) but anyways, I think I heard on the DML sometime ago about
a 'pink' DeLorean. Yes, Pink. Ugly color for a D, but anyone know
where this car is?? I seem to recall it being in Saudi Arabia,
possibly beloning to the royal family or something like that. I'd like
to see what this car looks like!

I believe that the problem is most likely the O2 sensor. They can be
bought for about $50 at any car parts store. Tell them that you have a
1980 volvo
264. It is very easy to replace if you have a large enough wrench.

All the DeLorean suppliers stock the accumulator, if you never changed one
before you will probably consider the procedure very difficult.
If the car starts after a few tries the problem is not the fuel
accumulator. .

If your planning to go to St.Louis this fall I would suggest trying
priceline.com for lodging and/or air travel.
rooms at the regal riverfront ,where expo is , start at $100 and go up .
Very pricey for a bed and shower.
You don't have to stay their of course. try shopping around I am now booked
into a 4 star hotel in downtown
St. louis 1or2 miles away from the arch for 3 nights @ $55 per night a
very good deal for a 4 star hotel.
Yes I'm sure you can find a motel 6 ( 30 min. away) for alittle less money
but why bother when you can live in luxury
Cheap. now I have an extra $150 for the products fair. I'm Happy : ) Also
If anyone is thinking of caravaning to the show
from southern Wisconsin or Northern IL. I would be interested in joing you

David, you describe the problems that I had on my car when I got it 1
1/2 years ago. After trying many things and talking to lots of people,
it turned out to only be a bad O2 sensor which was cheap and easy to

Erik,
I just spent Father's Day replacing my accumulator. I am not trying to
discourage you or anything but what I thought was a two hour job turned out
to be a 6 hour project. This did include a trip to the store for a vise and
fuel hose (see below).
Check the achieves for a description by Phil Wiltfong from June 11, 1998 for
a great procedure for this job.
A couple of things to add to Phil's description.
- when you pull the accumulator down out of the frame be careful not to kink
the flexible fuel hose (which I did, thus the need for new hose).I would
recommend replacing the hoses while you are in there. It is 1/4" ID.
- when you pull off the return hose from the back of the accumulator, have
something ready to catch approx. a quart of fuel. I didn't think it would
ever stop coming out!
- the biggest problem I had was taking off the threaded side of the tube
compression fittings. The one on the right angle that you have to loosen up
in the frame took 30 minutes of work (and a few choice words) but it finally
turned. The two fittings on the accumulator would not budge at all. I had to
cut the flexible hose attached to the front side to free the accumulator from
the car. I but it in my new vise and got them off with a breaker bar.
Putting it back together was not as bad as taking it off.
Again I do not want to discourage you from trying it yourself. When you
finally get it done and back together there is a great feeling on
accomplishment.

Here are the facts. In February and March of 1981, for quality control
purposes, several hundred inner body / chassis cars, known in the factory
as "black cars", were built for training purposes. Although there were less
than 500 of these training units it was decided to start the regular
production numbers at 500. So although these cars were never completed they
did have ID (vin's) numbers somewhere between 1 and 500.
As far as your comment that "The reporters claimed the DeLorean was "a
worthless piece of junk that would be best left in the garbage can". This
is completely untrue. Yes, there was some criticism and speculation, but
nothing like you described.
We have copies of all the reviews from all of the automotive writers and
industry magazines during that period of time. Actually most of the
comments were positive.
Your friend may have credability but his rendition of DeLorean history is
very inaccurate.

All the DeLorean suppliers stock the accumulator, if you never changed
one before you will probably consider the procedure very difficult.
If the car starts after a few tries the problem is not the fuel
accumulator. .

I searched thru the back issues about a stronger alternator and found
some info on a Delco 105 or 110 amp version but couldn't find out what
the part number was. I have a lot of extra equipment and want to do
away with the stock Motorola alternator. I thought about having the
Motorola rebuilt and made stronger, but would rather get a Delco or
other type 105 or 110 alternator. If anyone could give me some advice
and what it took to make the other alternator work, (details please)I
would greatly appreciate it.

This writer is correct.
There was very little if any negative press. The only negative was a David
E. Davis of (as memory serves) Car & Driver (a Ziff Davis publication at the
time), who said words to the effect ".. now if they just toss it out and
begin again". Words like junk were never used.
All publicity was in the US office nationally, and from UK and elsewhere.
All was most positive for the first on line production car in 50 years.
The only other negative was from a writer named Jones, who wrote a short
piece more as a criticism of JZD than the car.

The part number is A1215.
But, typical of Lucas I guess, yesterday it decided to fail. The battery light
now comes on in varying degrees of brightness, and the alternator doesn't seem
to be putting out as much current as it should. Bleh.
The again, I guess three years out of a Lucas part isn't so bad. :)

Hi!
About putting in a stronger alternator...
If what I remember from my physics calsses is correct, a 110 amp
alternator will invariably cause more resistance than the stock
alternator at 80 amps.
Is this difference noticable in driving, and/or acceleration times? If
that is the case, wouldn't the best choice be to chose an alternator
that is marginally stronger than the stock alternator, and justt
sufficient, rather than doing the >110 amp overkill?

Does anyone have the low & high specs on the charge required? I
require it to actually determine if the pressure is low so that I can

Matt,
You are right about the additional mechanical load imposed by the larger
alternator. Looks like you paid attention to your teacher in physics class.
However, the difference in drag between an 80 or 110 amp on a 130 hp.
engine is negligible.

My '81 D had an air conditioner that worked just fine. Then one day,...no
more cool air. And no fan power.
I took it to my mechanic who does other good things for my D. After
vacuuming the system, he attempted to put in the R-12 (thanks to all who
recommended Freon) and said the gauge "rocketed". He thinks the system
might be clogged.
Any input from the dmcnews "think tank" would be greatly appreciated.

For starters do not try recharging the system your self unless you are
certified in HVAC. If you are certified then: you should do the
following. If you are only wanting to check and charge the system then
you will only need to use the low side. Hook up your gauge. The
gauge should read about 83 pounds of presser(when the a/c is turned
off). Now start your car turn the A/C on max cool.
The gauge should now read 40 pounds of presser
NOTE:( do not put more than 40 pounds in your system you will run a
chance of locking up your compressor.) If your system reads less than
40 pounds then add r-12 slowly to the system being careful not to over
charge it NOTE: you will need to charge and check the systems
presser on the low side. The only time you should have to use the
high side is when recovering r-12. Just a reminder when connecting
your gauge be QUICK because freon will escape when you are hooking up
to your line.

Carol,
The DeLorean air conditioning system is a standard "cycling clutch orifice
tube type", no surprises here. The only thing exclusive about the system is
the location of the components. Standard diagnostic and repair techniques
may be used. So tell your mechanic to do whatever he would do if he were
working on an early 80's GM car.
PS: I have no recollection of a DeLorean AC system ever being clogged.

Back in May of this year prior to me buying the car I have now, I saw
an 82 DMC mfg. Dec of 81 I don't remember the vin, the car was in
Valley Cottage NY (by the Tappan Zee bridge) the owner was Vince
Colantuuoni. The car was missing the DMC logo on the front grill and
the speedometer was not working but otherwise seamed like it was in
great shape. Vince sold the car before I could get the car inspected
and I would love to speak with the person who bought it. I think he
said the new owner was from Connecticut.

Sweden, where I live, being the home country of Volvo naturally has a
lot of Volvos. Therefore I though that it might be simpler to find

cards for less than half of those requested. I am apparently one
of the fortunate ones, since mine was there.

Perhaps a little clarification of Efren's needs are in order.
<p>Efren Hicks is a 16 year old who recently acquired a DeLorean and wants
to "Live the Dream" like the rest of us. The car is a 1983,
that the previous owner was in the process of restoring. A lot of
things are part way done, such as the facias. (The rear is completely
re-done, but the front is badly sunburned and warped.) The interior
has been almost completely removed, and many replacement parts are in boxes
(headliners, new binnacle, etc.) I have seen the car and it appears
to be 90-95% complete.
<p>But the main trouble is the transmission (5-speed, manual). It's
not broken; it's not there. At all.
<p>The story is that the transmission was sent out to be rebuilt.
While it was at the shop, the shop owner declared bankruptcy and the contents
of the shop (including the transmission in question) were seized as assets.
Where this transmission is now, no one seems to know.
<p>What Efren needs, then, is a complete 5-speed transmission. DMC
Houston appears to have one in stock, but it would be over $3,000, with
tax and shipping. This is a budget buster for a 16 year old.

Excellent.
Unfortunately the suitability of these turbos will depend on how similar
the DMC manifolds are to the Volvo manifolds that the kits are designed
for. I don't know the answer to this question; they may, or may not,
actually fit. The same thing holds true for the high-flow catalytic
converter.
If, on the other hand, you were to find a source for forged
rods/pistons/crank (which are, I think, guaranteed to fit), a lot of
performance people looking to turn up their boost might be real happy.

Hi Carol,
I doubt your A/C has any clog in it. The worst case would be water in your system that may
have frozen in your cap tube. But that would be removed when he did a "thorough" pump down of
your A/C system. When mechanic performs a thorough pump down he evacuates both the high and
low side of the system at the same time. When you say the guage rockets when he went to add
freon means he did NOT thoroughly evacuate the system or he has the guage on the wrong port on
the compressor. I am assuming he knows to charge the system in the low side port of the
compressor. Both ports on the DeLorean compressor look the same. I am a little concerned why
your mechanic opted to pump down the system (vacuuming) first rather than just add more freon.
I am also assuming he has checked all of the electrical and mechanicals of the system first
before opening the freon system and they are all working. Anyway, the chance of a A/C system
getting plugged with dirt are about 1/2% and that would be only if somebody had the system
open or the filter/dryer unit collapsed and was sucked into the cap tube.

system. After I changed the compressor we used his machine to clean the system
and recharge it. The book calls for 2.5 lbs of R!12. I though I remembered
someone saying that 2.2 lbs actually worked out better so I called Rob Grady's
shop. Rob said 2.2 lbs with a rest pressure of 60lbs. We installed the 2.2lbs
and saw a rest pressure of slightly over 60lbs. The car cools down perfectly. My
son-in-law said that the system doesn't always cycle, that's related to cabin
temperature and ambient air temp and humidity. </FONT></DIV>

There seems to be alot missing in these turbo kits. There is no mention of
a blow off valve, intercooler, or wastegate. It doesn't state how high the
boost level is either. This level will decide whether or not you'll need
fuel and ignition upgrades as well. Without these components you'll go
through the turbo and engine before you can say "88 mph!"

This is very interesting information. My only concern is that the Volvo
version of the PRV has several external components located in different
locations which means that the this turbo would need some modification work
to bolt up to the DeLorean. Thanks for the information, we will do some
further research.

I'm confused, if you suggest that the individual who issued the initial
post should be HVAC certified why would you give instructions on servicing
the system. A certified technician should already know the procedure that
you explained; right ? If there not certified than they should not attempt
the procedure that you explained; right.

Hey Robert,
I asked this same question and the answer is NO ONE. The picture is a
fake. I don't remember who edited the picture but they used a computer
program to stretch the DeLorean body and make the necessary changes to make
it look real. And also while we are on the topic...I believe I remember
hearing something about Don Steger was thinking about making a DeLorean Limo,
but I haven't heard anything since.

Im sure many others will reply to this. This 'Limo' was discussed in
the DML back issues, it was made by computer. If I recall the maker is

The DeLorean you are talking about belongs to Robert Hlavacek. I've seen the car, its in
excellent condition, but I doubt it was used in The Wedding Singer since Bob didn't say
anything about it... They probably removed the logo off of the front grill in the Wedding
Singer so they wouldn't have to pay DeLorean money..... Just a guess, am I right? Does
anyone know?

My 5 speed was getting difficult to shift into 1st and now it wont go at
all. 2nd is hard but all other gears shift OK. Does anyone know what
this is likely to be??
The hydraulic clutch cable has been replaced with the stainless steel
braided hose.

Subject: [DML] Steering Woes from Heck

Ok I have run out of ideas on this one...
I recently put in a new steering rack and lower U joint to take care of
a sloppy steering problem. Ever since then the steering seems to bind
up and get stuck going around. I've disconnected the joints from the
rack and find the rack to be tight with no binding so I know it must be
somewhere in the joints. To try to solve the problem I replaced the
bushing at the firewall thinking that would solve the problem but no
luck. I have soaked the joints in oil to make sure neither are stiff.
Steering column itself seems to be binding free. Any ideas??

None of the turob kits sold for the DeLorean had blow-off valves, VERY FEW
had intercoolers and most had some sort of a wastegate. Almost all of the
turbo kits are of the low pressure variety, running at 5.5 lbs to 7.5 lbs.
of boost with most in the 6 lb. range. At this level you'll rebuild your
turbos many times before you'll hurt the engine - it is very solid. I know
of several turbo'd DeLoreans that have been driven 50 to 100,000 miles
without noticeable, turbo induced wear.
I had 50,000 miles on the turbo's on my first D. There were no engine problems.
Most people have no intention to race the D's, they simply want to acquire
more power to make the car perform like it looks.

Hello list,
I have recently been working on my DeLorean site and would like to
add a section on the prototype DeLorean. I am referring to the DeLorean that
was used by Car and Driver for the road test in 1977 and that is on the cover
of the"DeLorean Gold Portfolio" book. It features different wheels, brown
interior and a slightly different shape. (I am NOT talking about the
pre-production car that only has a 4 cylinder engine.) Does anyone on the
list know where this car is at or have any information concerning it? Any
information would be greatly appreciated.

I am having the radiator and all the hoses replaced in my car.
When my mechanic took out the old one, along with the fans he noticed
that the plastic housing around the left side fan was broken and the
bracket holding
the raditor and fans on that side was bent. Presumably from a curb or
pothole (the #1 cash crop for Colorado in the spring). Straightening
this out has not been a problem but this brought attention to the fact
that the cross member of the frame right behind the radiator is bent up
about 1/4-1/2 inch. This is just enough to pinch into the above
mentioned fan housing and stopping the fan from turning (yes, the fan
still works and did not burn out !?!).
Strangely, I was not having cooling problems and it doesn't seem to
effect the suspension.
No uneven tire wear.
My mechanic is going to lengthen the arms holding the radiator and fans
about 3/4 of an
inch (This is almost the maximum amount of room there is to work with.)
to give the fan the clearance it needs to turn. Has anyone else had
this problem?

What size and brand of turbo did you use? Did you use a kit or did you do
custom work?
