Joe,
Through personal experience over the past two weeks and what you have
described below is absolutely true. The DeLorean is a car of eye-catching
appeal and intrigue and organisers of car shows become very protective
especially if they are exhibiting cars of a particular make. They
certainly don't want 'ring-ins' which are likely to take the attention away
from the other entrants.
Just last week we entered our 'D' in a display solely for street machines
and drag cars and bikes. I thought it would be a nice debut for the 'D' -
the first ever time we've ever shown it. I even went to the extent of
putting together leaflets detailing the history of the 'D' which my son and
I handed out liberally to all those who swarmed over the car. And I must
confess that the 'D' got at least 80 percent of the attention during the
day. Well, sad to say that not one judge came anywhere near our car,
infact we didn't even get a mention at the end of the day nor when the
prizes were handed out.
I'm still tempted to take the 'D' to the Holden day just to see what happens.
Regards,
Lance

I'm currently looking to buy my first Delorean and was hoping for advice on
what to avoid when viewing potential purchases. I've owned other sports cars
and know to check all electrics, bodywork, engine etc and was wondering if
there were anythings in particular that could present problems with a

Also, does anyone know of any Deloreans for sale in the UK. I would prefer a

it is a special shape and is tapered at the ends to clear the door. the

If applied right it keeps a lot of dirt out of the t-top area.

I just wanted to let everyone know what a great show the British Car Club of
Charleston (South Carolina) put on this weekend. They had a large array of
British cars to admire. Mine was the only DeLorean to make the show, but it
was still lots of fun. In our category, Open Class/Modified, there were two
AC Competition Cobras, a Ferret (British military recon vehicle), and a
Porsche (adopted by the Club). The Ferret beat all of us!
Despite not bringing home any hardware, the DeLorean got lots of attention,
and I fielded quite a few questions. I hope that some of you will be able to
make it to next year's show. It was a great place to celebrate the best of
Britain.

Two problems....trying to get my DMC thru Maryland emissions, the car
suddenly began to overheat (granted it was 98 degrees here...) as I
waited in line. Had to pull out and let it cool. Now, it overheats
within 5 minutes of starting. Both fans drawing air into the radiator,
overflow bottle half full with hot liquid, bleeding attempts show no air
coming out...no recent cooling system work. Has run cool for
months...Any ideas?
Next question...while looking at things, I noticed there is a U-shaped
hose attached to the top of the control pressure regulator. One end
attached, the other going nowhere...is this correct? If not, what is
other end attached to?
Thanks!

Jim,
Your DeLorean is overheating due to trapped air in the coolant lines. The
hose on the warm up regulator is an atmospheric air hose and is supposed to
be open at one end.

I apologize for asking this without checking the archives...but the search
engine was down when I tried to check!
With the unbearably hot weather here in TN, I have noticed a problem with my
clutch/transmission. When the car is hot and I push and hold down on the
clutch for a time interval of around 8 seconds or more, sometimes the car
will shake! When this occurs, it becomes difficult to shift out of whatever
gear I am in. When I do get it out of gear and into neutral (the clutch
pedal is still pressed), the shaking goes away but I cannot get into a gear
without terrible grinding. In this situation, if I put the car into
neutral, let off of the clutch and then immediately try again...I can get
into gear normally and everything works fine.
It seems that this problem only occurs after I have driven it for a while.
Is this a classic example of the plastic clutch line syndrome? I sure hope
so, I can live with replacing that!
Thanks,
Travis

Just recently went through that one myself! More than likely, the bearings
in the blower motor are shot. You will know that is it if it makes a
squealing sound when it does happen to come on, thus your "gremlin" analogy.
Nothing to do there except purchase a new blower motor. Now, the blower
motor is probably not working b/c the blower resistor is bad. This sort of
looks like a small rectangular plate with a spring/coil on it. This is what
I would check if I were you. Good luck!

I was having blower problems which was caused by water being in the motor.
I discovered that my hood bumper stop screw was allowing water to flow
straight down into the motor. I removed and drained the motor and it has
started working again.

You haven't yet replaced the hydraluic clutch line. It's orginally a plastic
tube and no good. It's replaced with a braided steel hose. It's the most
common thing that has to be replaced. Call DeLorean One, they'll fix you up.

taking my RX-7 to the mechanic for a clutch job, I saw one parked in the
garage. I ran up and was asking all kinds of questions. This is the first time
I have seen one up close since I was a youngin' down in Florida. I got to sit
in it and it was awesome. Got all kinds of pictures too! The mechanic knows
someone with a D for sale for around 5 grand that needs about 6 k of repairs..
hopefully in the next year it will be mine.. I plan on buying it in the next
couple of months. Just wanted to say hello and how much I love these cars!
Until next time,

Another thing you might check:
The electrical connection is on the bottom of the blower
motor. At some past time, mine had been hit by something (a
shoe? something placed on the passenger floor?). The stud
was mechanically broken, but the rubber mounting kept it in
place and also in electrical contact SOME OF THE TIME.
Acceleration, turning, or bumps in the road would make the
motor cut out for minutes, hours, or days. The only
solution for mine was to replace the motor.

Hi everyone. As I live in Australia, if I was to purchase a DeLorean I would really have to convert in to RHD. I would have thought being rear engined all of the steering components could be moved around pretty well. I've seen lots of cars
Also, did the DeLorean use the steering components from another car? I ask this because I wonder if you could use the RHD version for an easier swap.

Travis - This does sound like a plastic clutch hose problem.
Before you go to the trouble of replacing the line, check the
clutch fluid reservoir to make sure you aren't low. You should
also try bleeding the clutch first to make sure you don't have
any air in the lines - particularly if the fluid level was low.

Greg,
Before you jump to conclusions let me share some information with you. A
very common problem with the DeLorean is that when the number four exhaust
gasket fails (begins to leak) it emits a sound that resembles a valve
noise. This noise is loudest in the area of the distributor. To check this
out get a length of hose about two feet long and while the engine is idling
probe one end of the hose in the area of cylinder number four while holding
the other end to your ear.
If it's a leaky manifold you will hear it. Let me know the results.

Hello,

Last year (I think it was last year, maybe it was 1997), there was a
large DeLorean show in the Greater Cincinnati area. Being a
police officer in Bellevue, KY, I had the fortune of meeting many of the
car owners and seeing many of the cars as they stayed at the Comfort Suites
near my city.

In addition to my day job, I am on the Board of Directors for the Buenger
Boys & Girls Club, Serving Campbell County. We have a large
car show each year as a fund raiser for the club, and I would like to invite
the local DeLorean owners to attend our show on Sunday, August 29, 1999.

The show is expected to draw over 400 cars. There is also a police
vehicle show, a fire vehicle show and a motorcycle show. There is
plenty of entertainment at the show, and the KY State Chili Cook Off is
held in conjunction with the event, so there is plenty of food to sample.

scenic locations, overnighters to the coast and Lake Tahoe, trips to the
wine country and car shows in our area. As a reward for attending, I
have a piece of original DeLorean memorabilia for every owner. E-mail me

Subject: [DML] Ponchatoula Strawberry Festival
Date: 10-Jun-99 9:13:08 -0500
Greetings friends,
A few months ago a friend of mine suggested that I try to get a few of
my D buddies to come out to Ponchatoula when we have the local Strawberry
Festival. The idea was to attempt getting Ds into the parade and the car
show that is held every year.
The Strawberry Festival is the largest FREE two day festival in the
state of Louisiana. This festival takes place in the month of April. I do
not know the set date yet. It draws in crowds in excess of 225,000 each
year. Lets show these people what a D is!
I have already talked to a woman named Kathryn Rinker who is a member of
the Ponchatoula Chamber of Commerce. She has assured me that if I can get
the participation from my fellow DMLers that we will make it into the parade
and that there will be a reserved (and secure) parking place for the cars.
I am hoping that we can make this a Strawberry Festival to remmember for
many people who have never seen the D. This is a family event and it may be
a easy way to pull your families onto a little DeLorean trip.
If we can get enough people to show up I will talk to Steve Wynne of DMC
and see if he would like to come out and give a tech seminar to the owners.
For info on what the festival is all about visit
http://www.ponchatoula.com/strawberry/index.html
Please try to email me if you would like to be part of this event. I need
to get a number of the people that would like to have their cars in the
event. Email me directly at SteveDMC@i-55.com
I will try to call Kathryn Rinker by next week letting her know how many
people would like to attend.
Thankyou for "Living the Dream"

On the subject of car shows.....
This year I have had the honor of being nominated to the Cape Vincent
Chamber of Commerce board of directors. I went to my first meeting as the
youngest member in early January with no idea on what to expect. After the
introductions I settled down with the idea of "lurking" until I learned how
things worked.
Low and behold the first issue was "How to bring more people to our quiet
resort village?" I just sat there listening to some good suggestions and

spoke up with the only idea I had at the time having just spoken to Rob

was that this idea would be squashed before it even crossed the table. Boy
was I wrong!!!
I am now the chairman of the 1st annual "Cape Vincent Autos On The River" to
be held on August 21, 1999. As the name implies, we are at the mouth of the
St. Lawrence River where it meets lake Ontario (about 20 min. from the 1000
Islands region). We are having a chicken BBQ, an Irish concert, and a
village wide yard sale on the same day. I know that most of you are not in
my area, as I only know of one DeLorean near me, but who knows, some of you
might want to make a trip to Canada and the 1000 Islands and make a stop off
and visit a while. If there is anyone interested, just drop me an email.

Hi there,
There are a few post-factory conversions here in England, and although I am no expert, I can supply contact details of a guy who took his DeLorean to Australia and converted it himself.
There are a couple of issues I know of:
1) It's a surprise to most, but the footwell on the right side of the car is slightly narrower than the left.
2) The master brake cylinder causes a lot of problems, being as it cannot be transplanted easily from one side to the other.
3) But the steering rack is the biggest because, as yet, we have not found a suitable OEM replacement. AFAIK you have to make/modify one from scratch.
Contact me privately, and I will put you in touch with Gary Hewitt

I think you have a problem with the cover on your fuel pump.
The drain for the cowl area dumps water on top of the gas tank.
If the cover is missing or damaged, water can short out the fuel
pump electrical connections and prevent the pump from working.
This would cause fuel starvation.

I have been trying to sign up to the Owners Directory and Production
Chronology since we bought our DeLorean last December, but I haven't had any
luck, either. I've also tried emailing Mr. Espey a couple of times about it,
but got no reply.
Seven months is a long time for it to be out of commission, so can someone

Hello all,
I suspect this is a common occurance? A design flaw? Just another
thing that makes our DeLoreans unique?
I have a similiar story- was actually on my way out to my mechanic's
place and it was pouring. Was running fine at about 60mph and slowed
down for my turn- that's when my car freaked. I thought it was
possessed- it started shaking and unfortunately right after turning
there was a steep hill. I had to rev the engine up to 3000rpm and
then shift into first just to get it going up the hill. The car never
stalled but felt like it wasn't firing all of it's cylinders. I told
my mechanic of the problem, but he said it drove fine for him (most
likely dried out and was OK?) I suspected the problem was water
sloshing around in the engine compartment (because sheets of water
slid forward when I braked).
Is there really water being channelled to dump on top of the fuel
pump? (as Mike said) Where do I look for the solution to this problem
and is it worth fixing (is it an expensive repair considering I
never intentionally drive my car in the rain)?
Thanks for your comments,

My dad recently cleaned the car with high-pressure and after that the engine
of the car also behaved weird. It shooked like hell. It appeared that water
prevented some spark-plugs from making a good spark; it ran on 4 cylinders
or something. After we replaced these spark-plugs and cleaned the
distributor-cap the car drove well again.

Two things can cause this - Yes, water gets all over the engine when it
rains, so the spark plug wires in particular and other wiring in general
must be in perfect condition to inhibit this. Check the bulkhead connectors
under the large black cover at the right rear (front?) of the engine
compartment. The coil is also in there as well and is vulnerable to getting
wet.
The fuel pump has a waterproof (sort of) cover over it, that deteriorates
with time and becomes less waterproof. In addition, there should be two tiny
hose clamps, not tie wraps, (not factory, but added) holding the cover to
the fuel lines. These are often missing. Rain from the windshield is
directed through a drain hole to fall exactly on the cover, so if it is not
in perfect shape water gets into the fuel pump area and sits on top of the
electrical connections. Once wet, it is very hard for it to dry out.
Eventually the connections will rust away.
To get to the fuel pump, remove the spare tire and remove the access panel
beneath it.
Two things to do here - make sure the seal is in perfect shape and replace
it if not, and I believe there is a solution that directs the water away
from the fuel pump in either the archives or the DOA magazine from a few
years back. While your at it also check the drain hole for leaves. You
cannot see th hole without removing the gas tank, but you can feel for it
just above the fuel pump behind the part of the floor the access panel
attaches to.

Arnold has a good point. The spark plugs on a DeLorean sit in little
wells in the head. Without the proper spark plug wires or wires that
have aged, moisture can collect in the well and short out the plug.
Correct wires should have a disk on the wire near the plug connector
that prevents water from getting into the well. This problem is more
likely than the fuel pump problem now that I think about it more.

I had the same thing happen in 1984 when I bought my Delorean new a drove it
back to Michigan from Minnesota. The car quite twice for no apparent reason,
but it was during an ice storm. It was one hell of a ride, many cocktails
when it was over!
My mechanic was never able to find a cause, and it has never reoccurred in
the sixteen years since.

Check the plug wires. I had the same problem and my plug wires were
apparently not going into the wells too securely. I used some plug wire
sealant and the problem was solved.
Hope this helps,

and is it worth fixing (is it an expensive repair considering I
never intentionally drive my car in the rain)?
>>
I had this similar problem with my DeLorean. Water had gotten on top of the
fuel pump and corroded the contacts where the wires are attached. Although I
had no problems I replaced the pump and the rubber sealing ring. The fuel
pump outer cover shrinks with age and causes water to be able to penetrate to
the top of the pump. No water had gotten into the tank and the sealing ring
was still tight and like new. I would highly recommend checking your outer
top cover to the pump to see the top of the pump where the two wires connect
with nuts. If there is water there it will be corroded and it is only a
matter of time before you will encounter problems.

I was in Westminster CA today(Friday) and saw a beautifully restored 81
Delorean with the lines in the hood and the gas flap. I think it had black
interior. I tried to talk to the shop but they were to enthralled in the
painting of another car. Does anybody know who's Delorean this is? The
shop who is working on it has done a fantastic job. I'm curious to know if
they have worked on other Deloreans and if anybody has any other experiences
with them. Sorry but I just can't remember the name of the shop. For those
who have seen will know. Let me know.

Hmm, the nerve of those TIME editors...
...I sent them a short and curt (read: printworthy) letter
criticizing them for not mentioning JZD in their "Movers and
Shakers of the Century" issue a few months back. It did not
get printed, but I did get a reply after a long while. There
was mention of "DeLorean appearing in an upcoming issue."
Didn't imagine this is what they had in mind...

Just a note for your diaries that the next European DeLorean Convention will
be held on the last weekend in May 2001. This event (like the Olympics) is
only held every four years and takes place at the original factory in
Dunmurry, Belfast, Northern Ireland. Many changes have taken place at the
factory over the years and this could be the last chance to "Drive the Test
Track". Further details will be posted this time next year...
Best wishes,

It is high pressure SAE100R7 1/4" hose, not normal fuel line. It is a teflon
hose reinforced with braid, similar to the so-called stainless steel clutch
lines but reinforced with cloth braid rather than steel. Do not use plain
fuel hose, it will not stand the pressure and will probably set your
car on fire. There are actually three of these hoses on the car, two at the
fuel pump and one at the accumulator. All of the injection hoses are similar
but not exactly the same.
This hose are readily available from the Delorean places, or ask for
Anson type TL704 from a hydraulics place. Aeroquip makes something
similar. Then the fun part is getting them installed on the barb
fittings. It's a very tight fit.

I was sitting on a stoop nearby Washington Square Park on the corner of,
I believe, Greene & Waverly with a couple of Friends Last night. just
sitting there, enjoying the night air. THe traffic was slow and calm.
Nice and qiet. A car hasen't past by for a coupla minutes, when, all of
the sudden . . . Crawling, slithering across the spotted pavement was a
growling stainless-steel snake. It slowly moved across and, luckily for
me, it had a red light. So, I fell into paranoic bliss for 40 seconds.
The light from the stores on the street and the lamp were reflecting off
it's body, giving it a violet glow. With a wide chassis, and low to the
ground body, it bullied anything that came it's way. Then the light
turned green, and with a low cruel growl, it hovered away. Wow, it was
the most beautiful night of my life.

Date: 13-Jun-99 0:16:33 -0700
Dateline June 12, 1999
Fairfield California - The Court House on Main street appeared once again,
this time on Friday June 11 as part of the Armlio Grad Nite '99
festivities. The Graduating glass selected BACK TO THE FUTURE as their
theme. The High School Gym was dressed inside and out with Themes from all
three BTTF films replete with a Delorean provided by the NCDMC Association.
Posed in a dramatic setting in front of the Courthouse set an NCDMC
DeLorean (owned by Lee Seiler) was the center piece of the nights big
doings. All grad night kids posed with the DeLorean for professional Still
and Video pictures along with Sacramento TV News coverage. At 10PM the
Court house doors were locked and all 389 grads' were hosted to a night of
partying with games, food and dancing and a 5am raffle for prized which
included a Limited Edition DeLorean Kit donated by the members of the NCDMC.
The NCDMC DeLorean was moved inside for grad to get their own pictures,
after rides in the DeLorean. The Delorean rides and strobe-lit court house
drew such a large crown that the street was closed and the DeLorean rides
had to start down the side walk to the street for the trip "Moving on
through time" (around the block)!
The NCDMC DeLorean was the center of interest through out the night, open
for inspection by all. News Paper clippings of JZD's life and times were
displayed along with Clips from all three BTTF films.

I am very aware that it is good to change coolant on cars every year or so,
