I have heard from various sources that DeLoreans built during 10/81-12/81
were higher quality than other build months. In SSI, it mentions that
during 11/81 production was DOUBLED from 40 to 80 cars per day. This being
the case, I'd expect DeLorean quality to decline since not as much time
could be spent on each car....Am I right about this or totally wrong??

I am sure that there are plenty of reasons for this, but speaking from personal experience, I had identical symptoms, and it was the wires. One of the plug boots was not seated properly.
As far as I know, the intake must be removed to get at the rotor (I tried and failed to do it with the intake left in place). I managed to change the plugs once without taking it off, but in retrospect, I think I would just take it off nex

Hi Everyone
Well after 3years in my closet, I finaly installed my new dash which I had
picked up at the Ohio/KAPAC gathering Oct 96 (new binnacle included). Now I
want to protect them as best I can (short of driving overcast only days)
I have seen the posts about the dash-mat protector avaliable from Dashmat. I
saw one in a car at Aspen 2 yrs ago. It looks nice an all but I don't really
care for the material they use. It has no apparent backing to speak of and
carpet is fairly porous in density. Too me this is fine for hiding damage
but not so good for protecting against it. Does any one know of another
availiable source that they might consider better? Possibly one that doesn't
have a glove box flap (too me they look tacky) or corners that curl up.
Also at the Nashville Expo I noticed some folks had custom sun shades for
their windshields. One type was external it rolled out flat on the
windshield with excess material that was tucked inside the door openings
then closed to hold in place. I like this the best. The other was a folded
type inside the car made of a silvery material double sided. Does anyone
know if either of these are still avaliable and who to contact.

Where did you hear this? I believe it is absolutely wrong. I have heard
the opposite, that these cars had pretty LOW initial quality due to the
production rate increase. Either way, after 18 years initial quality is
just a bit of historical trivia. It has little to do with the cars as
you see them today.
As I understand it, the increased production rate did not reduce the
labor attention given to each car. When they increased production, DMC
hired more workers. It is the learning curve of the new workers that
might have caused initial quality to slip. How well these initial
quality problems were corrected at the QACs could be a good subject for
discussion.
Either way, there is no compelling reason to use the build year/month as
a deciding factor when buying a DeLorean.
IMHO it is a foolish DeLorean buyer who sets such rules for
himself/herself. Anyone who says: "I won't look at any November '81
DeLoreans because of their poor quality," or "I won't look at any May
'81 DeLoreans because they have Ducillier alternators," or even "I will
only look at low mileage DeLoreans because their engines will be in the
best shape," is doing themselves more harm than good.
You might as well say: "I will never buy any DeLorean because the oil in
the crank case must be 18 years old by now!"
Call me crazy, but after 18 years someone has probably changed that
oil. That is what you need to find out. All you can tell from the
build month/year is what questions to ask the previous owner.
There is no substitute for doing your homework.

I have the Dashmat cover. I had it on my car for the last year and a half.
It stills looks brand new and I drive my car everyday and park out in the
sun. No fade or discoloration. For $40.00 it is okay. There are better
ones made but they cost more, the price reflects the material used. I think
you can make the investment with confidence.
Take note, that a thick material will make the dash look "heavier" and retain
the sun's heat longer which may "bake" the pattern onto the dash itself.
That is the complaint with owners of thicker dash covers.

Has anyone had any success building a speaker box for the shelf behind
the rear seat? I realize that there are pre-made boxes that will kinda
fit, but I have been trying to build one myself. The box I have
designed has NO 90deg angles, and with my poor carpentry skills, it has
been a tough project.
How much interest would there be if I were to find a shop that would
made a high quality custom speaker box for the DMC? It would be just a
box, you put your own drivers in and hook up your own amplifiers. A
price guess would be in the $150-$200 range.

I have run into a problem with my 81 Delorean and run out of ideas for trouble shooting. The engine had been running great,easy starting and lots of power(for a Delorean). Yesterday while returning from a short trip out of town I notice
I have checked all the vacum hoses and the connections. The fuses are all good and have good clean contacts. The fuel tank had been pulled last year and cleaned out and all the parts in the tank replaced (filter screen,pick up tube and
The engine has spark at the plugs and the plugs are not fouled. The fuel pump is engaging and running. I filled up all three cars on the same day at the same gas station and the other two are running fine,which should rule out bad fuel.
As it stands now the engine will start very quickly and then just dies out with the rpm dropping off. When the gas pedal is held down the engine will stay running at about 2000 to 2500 rpm. The idle micro switch is working and the idle
The only work I've done over the last three month is top off the A/C with freon. Any ideas?

The folding type inside the car are custom made for each make of car.
They're listed in the J.C. Whitney catalogs and work great. Check the
DeLorean shops for dash mats. I got mine several years ago from one of them
at an DOA Expo from, I belive it was, DeLorean one.

Good question. According to our VIN vs. Frequency of Repairs records there
is some truth to this statement. The answer is "rhythm". The cars with the
more frequent problems were the early cars. As the numbers increased the
quality improved. The factory workers were known to be meticulous, they
wanted every car to be "right". When production was increased the factory
and the workers were ready. So during the time the factory was at "full
bore" the build quality was quite good.
BTW: The cars with the most problems were the ones left idle "on the line"
when the factory would shut down and re-start, days or in some cases,
months later.

Dennis,
You're right; the porous materiel of the Dash-Mat allows UV's to pass
through, this is because the materiel is designed to allow sound to pass
through from dash mounted speakers. I don't really care for the external
windshield unit for many obvious reasons. The silver coated interior type
is the best, it not only protects the dash but keeps the car much cooler
when exposed to the sun.
Because of the excessive height of the DeLorean windshield you will need to
find a model that will reach the visors, Kmart and Pep Boys sometimes stock
these bigger units.
You mentioned the glove box flap, did you know that if you order the
Dash-Mat unit you can request "no glove box flap". Dash-Mat does not stock
low volume models like the one for the DeLorean. When you call in an order
they go to a CAD computer, select a code, and the mat is cut to spec. If
you request it, they will tell the computer not to cut the flap.

The only thing ever mentioned on the DML has been a source for
cross-drilled rotors. I suppose you could get this place to NOT drill
them. Cross drilled rotors (this will probably start another debate) are
not normally recommended for street driving due to shortened service
life, higher corrosion rate etc.. They are kind of neat looking, though,
and in theory cool faster. You commonly see them on high performance
bikes and race cars.

I had this same problem. After replacing the injectors, my D ran fine for
about a month. The cause was water in the tank. I didn't get it from bad gas,
I got it from not having the rubber cover on the fuel pump. Something one
does not look for when buying a car. My car was not inside and the rain
runoff had leaked into the tank.Check the back issues of Delorean World,
(Fall1987) in it you will find how to install a plenum drain baffle to keep
the water that runs off the windsheild from getting anywhere near your fuel
pump cover. Check the rubber fuel pump cover first, make sure it is water
tight. Then follow the instructions on how to install this homemade item. DMC
Joe may disagree on what is wrong with your car but the way you describe it,
sounds like my old nightmare. A happy ending to this story is that after
making the repairs to the fuel system, my D has no fuel related problems.
As for the speaker box, contact Rob at PJ's. He had in his car what I called
speaker-zilla. Dont know if he sells it or just made it for his own ride but
it looked and sounded great!

After about two to three years of use I noticed that my gray dash was
starting to turn brown. The fact is that there is no UV protection. The
carpet materiel is porous to allow dash speaker sound transmission. So I
think owners need to be aware of this.
BTW I still have the mat installed in my 260k mile D.

Sounds like your engine is suffering from fuel starvation. The first thing
to do is pull the fuel pump and inspect its position and the position of
the pick up hose. Also check to be sure that the fuel baffle has not become
detached from the bottom of the tank. For further assistance you may e mail

Try the ignition module, that might work. Normally, if it's toast, then the
car won't stay running unless you keep working the accellerator.

The Northern California DeLorean Motor Club (NCDMC) will be having a
gathering on Sunday, June 13th in Concord.

The El Torito is located in the Willows Shopping Center off of Willow
Pass Road at Highway 680. You can see it from the freeway on the east
side of the highway.
We'll be discussing activities for the club, such as road trips to
scenic locations, overnighters to the coast and Lake Tahoe, trips to the
wine country and car shows in our area. As a reward for attending, I
have a piece of original DeLorean memorabilia for every owner. E-mail me
if you can come. I'll need to let the restaurant know about how many
people will be coming. I'll make the reservation to seat us at 9:30 when
the restaurant opens, so please be prompt.
Come on out even if you can't bring your car. We'll start with
breakfast/brunch and then get our cars lined up for a photo shoot. If
enough people attend we'll caravan to one of the local scenic locations.
I've been trying to find every DeLorean owner in the Northern California
area. Membership is free. We've had 2 'meets' so far. We are planning
tours, tech sessions, and perhaps we'll even host a larger event. If
you'd like to join in just let me know. Soon we'll have our own web site
for club information and announcements and a message board. Having a
lack of DeLorean service facilities in our area makes it all the more
important for us to band
together.

Your heart is certainly in the right place, but be aware that quality
speaker cabinets are designed with the aid of highly sophisticated
computers and other state of the art techniques. To match the low end
response of today's digitally produced music every facet is taken into
account, i.e.: speaker size, wattage, interior air volume, height, width,
angle, base ports or not, construction materials, fasteners, glues,
acoustical damping materials, and more. You may be able to construct a box
that looks right, but to make it sound right is a much bigger challenge.
Oddly enough many years ago I bought a speaker box for my DeLorean. It was
the perfect size with a low profile. It held four 8" speakers and sounded
great. When we converted the car to a BTTF show car we removed the speaker
to make room for the "flux capacitor". The cabinet which is covered in a
gray felt material is sitting on a shelf in our storage area.

While on this subject I was wondering what different types of protections
people use for thier seats. I know to treat them with Lexol and other
leather products works well. However I am thinking of getting covers for
mine that I can remove when I want to, however I would like to have them on
to avoid the scratches and knicks that sometimes occur to the seats when
climbing in and out. Since the seats are so expensive to replace I want to
try to preserve them as best I can. I have heard about factory sheepskin
covers? Are there such things. I would be interested to hear other owners
solutions.

I am in the process of having one custom made for my deck. I have a stock
one in there now, but am not happy with the way it looks. My local dealer
said he can do one for me using my subs and 6x9's for around $100.00. He
said he will be able to match the carpet very well and it should look as
close to stock as possible.

Gary,
There were sheepskin seat covers that was sold for the DeLorean cars, I am
not sure if they are still available from any the DeLorean suppliers or
independent seat manufacturers.
I purchased a set three years ago from DeLorean One. They are a very good in
quality. They are thick, equal shades in color and well assembled. NOT
CHEAP, they are costly.
They do help to keep the original seat covers from further deterioration. It
also help the seat from becoming frying hot from the sun and the bone
chilling feeling from the cold temperatures. It also provides a cushion, that
will boost you in the height when you are seated. It will give you a nice
"new"contour and comfort to you as the driver as well as to the passenger,
whereby the original seats will not.
The sheepskin covers is the well worth the money. Many DMLers feel that it
makes the interior looks "gordy" destroys the "futuristic" look. My opinion
by experiences? Go a a long trip for five hours or longer, with and without
them for and you will understand which way you want to go. As they used to
say: "try it, you will like it!"

DO NOT SERVICE THE IGNITION MODULE. The failure rate for this component is
less than 1%. These units virtually last forever. They either work or don't
work. If the engine is missing the problem is elsewhere.

You have made an interesting comment. Over the years we have had situations
where some auto shows that feature a limited range of cars get very upset
because the DeLorean's "steal the show".
Several years ago we drove several DeLoreans through the front entrance of
a British motorcar show with doors raised. The majority of the spectators
swarmed to our cars like bees to honey. I know that the other participants
were slightly upset. But you know what? That's what I love about the
DeLorean, they never fail to attract a crowd.

I had the same identical problem as you describe. My problem was found
to be a bad warm-up regulator. A rebuilt one can be found by most
repair shops. Mine was $210. which is far less that a new one. Suggest
you have your fuel pressure and that regulator checked.

Due to a bad accumulator, and a clogged system, I recently had my air
conditioning totally flushed, replaced the old style accumulator with
the newer model (and front portion of suction hose), and recharged with
R134. Of course I did have to have new seals, oriface tube, O-rings,
oil to accumulator and compressor, etc, but the air conditioning is
running cold. The only problem was that the local Ford dealer who
worked on it could not locate an adapter for the high side of the
compressor for this conversion. But all seems well. If a problem
occurs I will post it.

here. I was driving the other day, and when I tried to shift from 4th to 5th, it
shifted to 3rd instead. I could physically put the gear selector in 5th but the
selector offered no resistance from the right, and it just went into 3rd. And
today when I got in my car to drive home from work, I couldn't get into reverse.
I would pull up on it as usual and bring it down, but it only would go into 2nd.
I was lucky that I also had the option of driving out forwards, although I would
have backed out otherwise. After backing out, but still in the parking lot I
came to a stop sign. I stopped and tried to put it into 1st, but again like with
5th, the gear selector was limp and it would only go into 3rd. I didn't realize
it at first so I stalled out in 3rd gear. So I tried to start out in 2nd and
again the shifter was limp and it shifted into 3rd. Ended up, I had to drive
home from word with only 3rd and 4th gear and now my car's just sitting in my
driveway because I can't get it into reverse. To top all that off, my air
control knob to turn on the vents is so worn down that it can't turn the metal
receiver piece inside the dash, and I had to drive home with 2 gears and no AC
on a scorching hot day. Just when I thought it couldn't get any worse, my
friend Mike backed his minivan into the back of my D and put a small gouge in
the black part of the bumper and scuffed it real bad.</FONT></DIV>

Out of the responses that I have received, the date that I am going to set
for this meeting for will be July 10, 1999, this will be a Saturday. This
date seems to be the one that will allow most of you to come and the more
the merrier.
I still need to get in contact with Bill and I will be doing this today, to
work out the meeting place and time. But the meet will be here in
Winston-Salem NC. Due to some of the concerns about Hooters in Greensboro as
a meeting place we will not be meeting there.
We will be selecting a meeting place that will be easy to find and I will
create a map so that we will not loose anyone. I will get this done by the
end of this week.

A lot of you are familiar with that episode of "The Simpsons" in which Troy
McClure gets pulled over in his DeLorean for drunk driving. Well, I was just
reading an article about Johnny Carson's DeLorean in this months issue of
DeLorean World, and it detailed a similar incident in which Carson got
pulled over while driving his "D" and was charged with drunk driving. I'm
guessing the opening scene of that particular episode of "The Simpsons" is
supposed to be a parody of the Carson incident. Does anyone else think so?
BTW, any Simpsons/DeLorean fans in Sydney would be interested to know that
the Troy McClure/DeLorean episode is on Channel 10 this coming Sunday, so be
sure to look out for it.

Hi every one,
Well it's registration time again for my D hear in California Home of the
Emission
control freaks!!!
While this subject is not dealt with much hear on the list, I thought that
as I just went threw the smog testing it would be worth a comment or two.
The standards hear in California are very high requiring that auto
emissions be below certain limits. For instance the following levels are
the maximum allowed:
2500rpm:
HC PPM 0150
CO% 1.50
CO2 21.50
02 9.90
When I took my D in for the test, it has run for a year with out an
official tune up, and had just air cleaner and oil changes, no plug gapping
or replacements, no point cleaning - nothing. It passed easily with the
following results.
2680rpm
HC PPM 0016
CO% .15
CO2 11.90
02 3.90
IDLE@0868rpm 02 1.30
The whole point is our D's are one of the cleanest running cars on the road
even after 18 years. Kinda of nice to know that at least here in California
the smog monsters are not a
source of grief to us D persons.

Cole,
I know you are going to get a lot of replies about this problem but I just
wanted to tell you that I had the same exact problem and it turned out to be
the Crossgate cable that controls the left and right movement of the shifter.
The shifter is spring loaded to go into the 3rd and 4th gears so the
crossgate cable is either broken completely in half like mine was or somehow
got out of adjustment. If you need a new on the Part number is 101363, it
cost me about $100 from PJ Grady. And it is reference Number 34 in Parts
manual...4.2.0 Manual Transmission. I would love to hear if this was your
problem...keep us posted.

Hello:
Im new to this mailing list and am seeking information on my car (2946). I
bought the car going on two years ago and have not driven it too much. The
major problem I have is that the turn lights and flashers do not work. I
have checked all the lights themselvs and have looked through the fuses. All
seem in order. I was looking for the flasher unit hoping that may be the
cause, but can not find it. Can someone PLEASE help me with the location of
the flasher unit?

I'd bet you have a broken or disconnected shifter linkage. There is one
rod and one cable that goes from the shifter to the transmission; these
may have come loose or unhooked.

I routinely leave my doors open for that same reason. It does leave the gas
less compressed and thus less stress on the seal but if this really makes a
measureable difference I don't know. I guess what counts is that you believe
you are doing what's best for your D.

The flasher is attached to the right side of
he instrument cluster as you look up from
underneath. It is a small black cube. Be
careful removing it, it is easy to damage the
clip that holds it to the cluster.

loose-circuit-board problem in the taillights. This will not be
discovered by simply checking the bulb. I don't know how to check for
this, but no one else has mentioned it, so... :}

Leaving the doors open puts the rubber weather/rain strips down the center
into a 90 deg bend. I believe leaving the doors in the closed position leaves
these rubber strips in their natural flat position, which helps in extending
their life. Struts are much easier to replace then these strips. Just my 2
cents worth.

Santa Monica Airport at their Aviation Museum
WINGS and WHEELS Event open only to British Cars and
Airplanes. They can only accept the first 250 - 300 cars
only. This is a no pre-registration $10 entry event. The

they will photograph each car with a Spitfire Plane. There
will be awards. If you would like to join us let me know
and I'll try and find a meeting area near-by and we can all
go in together. This will be a large event with rides in a
Tiger Plane, car club booths, British food and music along
with fly-bys.

The IRISH FAIR on Saturday and Sunday. We will have our car
on display Sat. with 2 others. drop by and see us. If you'd

Displaying your car gets you free admission and some food
script . You'd have to have your car there by 8:30 ish and
stay until closing. There will be so much to see and do

A 250 CAR SHOW with awards . We'll be there also , if we
could get more cars we might be able to get our own class.

FOURTH OF JULY PARADE. We already have about five cars so
far. This is FREE There is a community fair and picnic
following in their Central Park, if you're interested. The
group of us usually just goes to a local Pasadena restaurant
for lunch. Parade starts at 10 AM so we meet at our house
for coffee, juice and donuts at about 8 AM and caravan the
short way to formation to decorate our cars. I provide
crepe paper, flags, spinners etc. Feel free to bring
whatever you wish for your car also. This is about a 1 mile
parade through their downtown and residential area. .

If the flasher checks out OK check the hazard flasher. The turn signal
wiring runs through the hazard flasher switch socket. While observing the
flasher reach behind the AC panel (from passenger side) and wiggle the back
of the hazard flasher socket and see if you can make the flasher operate.

I've often considered the same thing, the tension on the struts and torsion bars is significant. I have heard of people removing the struts and/or relaxing the torsion bars for winter storage, but the potential for damage during the torsion

Thanks to Duke for posting that note about fixing dead temperature
guages. Mine was pointing due south after one of my diodes came
disconnected. A little nudge from a wire inserted through the odometer
reset hole and it popped right back to 100.

Based off the info I've found on this, there is no other transmision that
would be a bolt in for the DeLorean. It's a modified Renault unit, with
emphasis on the "modified".

I have removed the door/roof seal from both doors (part numbers
106967/8) because they are both shot. I am going to replace the rubber
and rivet the seals back to the doors. But I have a question, what holds
the other side of the seal to the "T" top? It looks like the rubber seal
part is loose and slides under the "T" top section of the roof when the
door is closed. Is this correct?

It seems your problem maybe similar to the one I had a couple of weeks ago
whereby the two pivot pins which hold the gear selector linkages together
(beneath the console), work their way out causing the gear lever to become
partially inoperative.á I'm sure that this mechanical failure is not uncommon
and I certainly hope you get more responces to your problem and how to fix it
than I did!!!! Below is a copy of what I posted to the DML on 16 May which
may
give you a few ideas.á

While out driving this week, I could not get reverse gear (5 Speed).á After a
little manouvering, I managed to drive off in first gear.áá After driving a
short distance I noticed that the gear selector was getting aprogressively
sloppy and eventually I could only select 3rd and 4th gears. Luckily we
weren't
far from home and managed to nurture the DeLorean back.á Upon investigation I
found that the two steel pins which held the gear selector assembly to the
mounting plate (under the console) had worked loose and the lever was actually
'floating' .á It was attached only to the selector rod.
The fact that the pins had worked loose caused some concern.á What
concerned me
most was the possibility of them working loose again and to determine some way
of preventing a reoccurrence.á When I reinstalled the pins, I could not get a
tight fit which meant they would eventually work their way out again.á To fix
the problem, I drilled a hole at each side of the mounting bracket above where
the pins slide through.á I then inserted the pins and drilled into each pin to
about 1/16 of an inch.áá The holes in the bracket were then threaded to
accommodate a small bolt.á I reassembled the the gear linkage assembly,
inserted the pins and locked them in place using the locking bolts with a
small
dab of medium Locktite.
Question .... has anyone else experienced a similar problem, and if so, how
was
it overcome?

Didn't we just do this one? :}
The DeLorean transmission was off-the-shelf, but only off-the-shelf if you
happen to live in France. Neither the auto nor the 5-speed (you didn't
mention which you have, and they aren't interchangeable) were used in any
other US car, both were used in Renault cars in Europe. In addition, the
final drive section is different in the DeLorean because the transmissions
were originally intended for front-wheel-drive cars. Because of this, the
final drive section was changed to make the output run backwards. So, the
transmissions are quite unique.
Fortunately, transmissions are readily available from your favorite
DeLorean parts supplier.

Your new seals come with the seal and a new stainless piece basically glued
to them. When you put your new pop rivet thru the stainless piece it goes
thru your seal and attaches to the roof of the door. This is what holds them
in place. You have to remove the T-panel in order to replace the seals
correctly.

Dave - the top seal has a special shape to help it clear the t-section
as the door opens and closes and to help it seal against the lower
surface of the t-section. A flat piece of rubber won't quite
work as intended.
The seal looks something like this viewed from the edge:

The seal is attached to the top of the door by as set of stainless
steel rivets and a shaped stainless backing plate. The curve helps
the seal clear the edge of the t-section as the door moves and
provides some spring to keep the seal against the lower
surface of the t-section.

On my third car some years back I had a similar problem, which turned out to
be the bellcrank in the shift linkage. There is a nut welded inside the
frame that this smail lever swivels on, and the nut had come loose. Reach
up into the hole where the fuel accumulator is and see if this linkage is
loose. My bet is its that or a broken cable as noted by others.

Your right, it's not attached to the T roof. They are rather difficult to
remove as they are pop riveted in place with stainless rivets. Hard to drill
out and if you grind them out you have to be very careful of the torsion
bars. A scratch on them can be terminal. Those seals don't stand up very
well because they bend in half every time the door is opened and only
contribute to the aesthetics more than anything. Any water just gets
channeled away around the door opening. Unless your a stickler for a
concours car it's hardly worth the trouble.
