These numbers have been tossed around for years, but I question the
validity of the 1982 and 1983 numbers.
As near as I can determine, the 1126 number for 82's was arrived at
through a DeLorean Service Bulletin which talked about a VIN range for
1982's, from 10000 through 11126. But there are several cars owned by
DML'ers with VIN's above 11126, as high as 11800.
In Ireland a few years back, I saw one of the RHD cars converted at the
company's request that was VIN 12174, with a build month of May 1982.
I recently came into possession of a computer print out of VINs, interior
color, transmission type and engine block# for 1982 cars up to 11126.
This will be incorporated into the DeLorean Production Chronology when it
is updated next month.

Nice photos, but note that they are selling a set of 4 springs. Was there
not a set of Lotus springs for the front that would bring the front end to
spec height? Thus leaving the back end factory? My understanding is that
only the front was riased to match bumper height regulations, the back was
fine as is. Follow up question, are the DMC-12's in Europe still at spec?
Or did they get raised as well?

Has anyone ever heard the real reason why D1 and DMC Houston split?
And - was there really a split, or did the DeLorean One Houston facility
simply change the name after aquiring the rights to use the DeLorean Motor
Company name and logo?
Anyway, I've used both D1 (stainless steel bumper letters) and DMC Houston
(all manuals)and both have provided me with A+ service! Keep up the good

Steve Wynne's opinion of #12179, one of the other right-handers, and also
with a May '82 date, was that it was a *much* earlier car that was re-badged
when converted. He even went as far as to say the underbody may have been one
of the prototypes.

Response to a North Carolina get together has been over whamming. But Sunday
is just to close of a date for most people to come, as most people have made
prior plans. So Bill and I have discussed this and have come to the
conclusion that it would be best to hold off and plan this thing out just a
little.
As it stands right now out of all the response that I have received there
could be has many as six Deloreans, several enthusiast and someone to offer
us some tech tips and parts that he has for sale.
So with this information we think that it would be best to post pone the get
together so that we can accommodate as many people as we can. The best way I
can think of doing this is to get the dates of when you can come. Lets say
for the month of July. From this information I will be able to determine
which date in July will accommodate the most people. The more people and
cars that we have, I think the more fun that we will have.

a point on this:
I always thought my own car was a lot lower than all the ones I had seen (at
Florida Universal) I assumed this was due to the film people raising the car
for all the film work ,however after seeing a friends who has recently
imported a Delo mine is way lower
there is hardly an inch clearance from the wing to tyre on the front and the
shocks have a
L.E .E sticker on them and I am now totally flumexed!
anyone shed any light on this ?

I think its only fair to stand up for d1
They have invested a lot of money in the car and have superb facilitys also
when I have dealt with them they have always been good . Over the phone
diagnostics is not easy and if you have the money new parts and complete new
systems are always the best bet .
I am however really rich and use bank notes to heat my house (NOT)
If anyone from Delorean 1 is reading this I really need a new steering
wheel :-)

Some things i picked up on the brochure. It says standard equipment is
a locking gas flap. So it referes to the gas flap in the hood, which is
clearly visible in the second picture. But i thought that the electric

That has changed SweatyEddy. Don Steger bought out Dee's share and is now the
sole owner as opposed to only being a part owner before.
We in the DeLorean Midwest Connection (Chicagoland) have brought Don in to
participate (real hands on) in an annual tech session for close to 10 years.
Very knowledgeable (DeLorean trained) mechanic and all around nice guy. You
won't go wrong utilizing his services.

You are using a old version of Adobe Acrobat.
I too had the same problem with just the engine section.
For some reason everything else opened fine.
Upgrade your viewer at the Adobe.com site
and everything should be great.
It's a fantastic reference (as is the entire DMCNews
site).
Don't think I would have ventured to buy a Delorean
had I not known there was such a great network
of owners and enthusiasts on the internet.

I guess most of us have had good and bad experiences with Delorean one,
I myself have had more good then bad, but you never know that day may
come that I have a really bad one. Like Darren, I am having a hard time
trying to find a clutch master cylinder. I've tried Delorean one, DMC
Houston, PJ Grady, no luck. Does anyone have an idea of where I can get
one? I really want to start driving my D. The summer in Alaska is very
short and time is wasting away.
Anyone else on the list from Alaska?
If so lets get together.

DeLorean Motor Company Suit Settled
DETROIT, May 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Arthur Andersen LLP and David W. Allard, Jr.,
Bankruptcy Trustee of the DeLorean Motor Company, announced today that claims
brought by the Trustee against Arthur Andersen in the New York state courts
in connection with the failure of the DeLorean Motor Company nearly 20 years
ago have been settled out of court for an undisclosed amount. The Trustee's
trial counsel was Chadbourne & Parke LLP and Arthur Andersen's trial counsel
was Brown & Wood LLP. The settlement is subject to bankruptcy court approval
in Detroit.
In early 1998, a jury in a New York State Supreme Court found in favor of the
Trustee, and Arthur Andersen filed post-verdict motions asking the court to
set aside the verdict and dismiss the case. Before the court rendered a
decision on the post-trial motions, the parties reached the settlement

A DeLorean Owner here in Ireland, John Corkey, has the thin grey stripe
option on his car. It looks nicer than the thick black stripe in my opinion.

Thursday while driving north on interetate 15 in San Diego, a DMC-12 whizzed
by me at about 70-75 mph. I couldn't read the license plate, but it was the
sanme style of plate as used in BTTF. From what I could tell, the license
plate was not personalized. The car was stainless and did not have any of
the optional dealer stripes on it. Does anyone on the list know who might
own this car? Also, are thee any San Diego area owners on the list (besides
Fil)? Please email me and let me know

Hi Mike,
IIRC Both front and rear springs were simply "given an extra inch" but with
the weight bias being severely towards the rear (70/30), the rear springs
naturally compressed more, giving the "nose in the air" look we know so well.
The car was, as you say, originally meant to be lower. Had the D ever found
its way into showrooms in the UK/Europe, it would have had the lower
suspension, the original Lotus-designed exhaust system and a number of other
things. The so-called "euro-spec" cars were for the most part conversions of
the stock american cars. I've heard a figure of around 60-70% of the necessary
conversions were made to get them on the roads in the UK (making them
right-handers being the principle one).
So to answer your question; No, the "euro" cars do not have the lowered
suspension, but they would have done! :-)
BTW, if anyone is not aware, the DOC has a contact for custom-made exhaust
manifolds which conform to the original Lotus designs.

Can somebody tell me how to lubricate the right angle unit? Is there a
special tool needed? The space is so tight, I could not get to the screw
below the drive without removing the whole unit and even if I can remove the
screw, it will be difficult to get a grease gun in there to lube the unit.

First off I searched the back issues, I found several people
including James himself who had a problem similar to this but I couldn't find
any posts on any solutions. I have a really annoying brake noise problem.
During slow braking or when the brake pedal is partially applied
(moving about 1 or 2 mph) the brakes will squeel unbeleivably, the slower I
apply the break pedal the more noise it will make. Once it starts making the
nosie if you slam down the brakes the noise goes away instantly. This only
takes place in the front end, the back end makes no noise. This tends to
happen after the car has been running for about 5 or 6 minutes. I had a my
friend's father, a mechanic took a look at it for me and removed the pads and
sanded them a bit. This made the noise go away for about 3 days but now it's
back.
This is starting to become embarrasing and I am at the end of my rope
with this problem. Now the car is attracting attention for all the wrong
reasons. I was in a trendy part of town the other night in heavy traffic and
looking for a parking space when all of the sudden the brakes start making
the noise. Everybody started looking my way, I started changing color right
there as people covered their ears. Needless to say that this problem has
outlived my liking and I need it gone quickly. This is also no longer a
cost issue for me.

I've got the same issue and dont think there is much that can be done.. You
can use an organic pad (if a compatable part is made), but they only last a
few thousand miles .. There are some anti-squeel sprays that claim to help,
although I doubt it.... The problem, as far as I understand it is, the
breaks get very hot and causes the surface of the pad to melt slightly....
giving it a "skin" of sorts that is noisey. You may want to get your brake
rotors turned, and/or try a different type of pad.. Maybe just cheap pads do
this??
Keep this thread going, I'd like to hear some input on this one myself..

This is day 10 as a Delorean owner. I have done a general inspection, adjusted the parking brakes removed seats for refurbishment and done a few minor repairs.
The luggage compartment cable broke yesterday. Fortunately the latch was stuck in the open position (lucky, lucky, lucky!). I was surprised that the actuating wire is a single strand of wire instead of a multi-strand cable. Is this right

When looking for DeLoreans i've noticed alot of luggage compartment cables are broken. The cable didn't look to be very big, which is why they brake so often. Gotta stink if it breaks at a gas station and your out of gas and on fumes.

In my experience as a former GM maechanic, I found that the most commom
cause of brake noise is glazed rotors and brake pads. This is consistent
with your symptoms. Sanding the pads helps, but they are quickly glazed
again because the rotors are glazed as well. You will have to remove the
rotors and have them turned at a machine shop or auto parts store that has
a brake lathe. (about $10 each) They will check the thickness for you and
let you know if you need to buy new ones or if yours can be turned. I
don't know the specs for the rotors on the D. You may want to find this
out for the shop before you go since it is likely that the D won't be
listed in the book. Maybe DMC Joe can give you the numbers. (turn to,
discard at, minimun thickness, etc.) All four can generally be turned, but
rear rotors always seem to be a problem for some reason.

Does anyone know where I can get some damaged parts?
I'm looking for the following:
L and R Quarter Panels. I'm only looking for the area from the bottom of the
window on up. Even severe damage anywhere below the window is fine.
Rear fascia. I only need one good half L or R. The other half can be
severely damaged. Even minor damage on the "good" half is OK.

Check around. The trany is made by Renault, You may want to find a cross
referance list to see what other vehicles it was used in. It's like
getting parts for a Mercury SUV, you'll pay more for the merc price then
the same ford SUV part price. If you go out looking for "DeLorean" parts,
you're going to get taken for a higher price (unless using one of our
friendly DMC dealers). I wish I could tell you which car the trany was
also used in.

Best thing is to take it off the car. If you do this make sure you get the bolt back on TIGHT, it holds the spindle axle on the car.
Second best is to disconnect the speedo cable and then you can rotate the drive to a better position to work on. The factory spec lube is 90wt gear oil, but it is usually considered better to use a heavy moly (wheel bearing etc.) lube. Delo

I was at Don's last week and watched him receive the last one from his supplier UPS and unpack it for installation on someone's car. All the suppliers now seem to be out. Rebuild kits seem likewise unobtainable.

When I bought my car the hood latch handle was a tiny pair of vise grips. I replaced mine with a stranded cable from a Bicycle shop. While you're at it, run a spare line along side the jacket and leave it hanging up over the gas pedal.

The DeLorean auto trans is a Renault R-30, although the basic unit was used
in some renault products, like the A-310, the DeLorean version is unique
with no crossover.

There are two possible causes of your stall problem.
1. Non functioning fuel enrichment circuit.
2. Engine needs a CO mixture adjustment.

Hi Everybody!
I searched the archives and couldn't find an answer.
Just bought my Delorean (#17089) on Saturday.
Here's one (of the many problems) I'm trying to figure out.
We did a full tune up on it - new plugs, rotor & cap, oil change etc...
The car idles fine but as soon as you apply pressure to the gas
pedal the car will stall - or run unbelievably rough.
Any ideas?

It all depends on which motors you have. If they are the after market heavy
duty up dates; install them. If they are the original factory units; trash
them and purchase the up dates.

Hi Everybody!
Quick questions on the windows... my Delorean's windows
are stuck in the up position. (the last owner decided to rip out
everything on the passanger door...so one assembly is completely
out).
But I have a total of 4 window motors (car came with a bunch of parts).
I haven't checked the contacts or relays yet. But....
If the problem is the motors...has anyone ever been successful
in rebuilding the motors??
Or is this just a no brainer spend the $495 at PJ Grady?

Sure - take out four screws, unsnap the two struts and it's off. There have been rumors (see the archives about 2 years ago) that this causes the engine to run hotter (apparently there is some aerodynamic extraction effect to the louvers),

Before taking any drastic measures go to your local NAPA or other auto
parts store and purchase "Brake Quiet", follow the directions and your pads
should quiet down. This is only a temporary solution but should last at
least a couple of months. If you still have problems after this email me

Hi Everybody!
Quick questions on the windows... my Delorean's windows
are stuck in the up position. (the last owner decided to rip out
everything on the passanger door...so one assembly is completely
out).
But I have a total of 4 window motors (car came with a bunch of parts).
I haven't checked the contacts or relays yet. But....
If the problem is the motors...has anyone ever been successful
in rebuilding the motors??
Or is this just a no brainer spend the $495 at PJ Grady?

Why and how do your brakes squeal?
Rub your finger in a circular motion around the top of a drinking glass,
you should be able to hear a squealing noise. A different size glass or
glass thickness, the amount of oil on your finger, water hardness, even
room humidity will effect the pitch. The physical properties regarding
brake squeal are the same.
Over the years we have heard and seen many solutions to this problem. New
anti squeal shims, turning rotors, changing pads, metalized vs.non
metalized pads, anti squeal sprays and goos, even cutting slits in the
pads. Amazingly all of these items will work, the problem is you don't know
which one will until you try it.
Here is what we do. If the pads are worn, we just change them out. We have
found that the pads from the DeLorean parts suppliers are less likely to
squeal than from the local auto stores. We have also found that Permatex
Disc Brake Quiet really works.

Never, ever, ever trust the factory trunk release cable; it is quite common
for them to snap. The factory installed release cable on my D (# 5830) is
multi-strand, but that may not be the case for all D's. It is a very simple
process to install an emergency backup release cable. All you need to do is
get a piece of multi-strand cable approximatelt 24" long. Loop one end around
the release arm (where the regular cable is connected; take the other end and
loop it around one of the bolts next to the gas filler cap (I suggest the one
closest to the windshield). Both of these ends should should have a crimped
connector to keep the loops intact. If your regular cable ever fails, simply
reach your right hand under the trailing edge of the hood just inboard of the
gas cap; grab the cable with all four fingers and pull it sharply toward the
left side of the car, while lifting the hood with your left hand. I have had
this on my D for many years and it works great. As a matter of fact, I rarely
use the inside release, as my backup cable is more conveient to use. As for
trunk security, the cable is out of sight and you would have to know how to
use it. As for the recommended length of the cable, play with that a little
bit until you find one that works for you.

We did a full tune up on it - new plugs, rotor & cap, oil change etc...
The car idles fine but as soon as you apply pressure to the gas
pedal the car will stall - or run unbelievably rough.
Any ideas?
Look for vacuum leaks. When you installed the ignition parts did you disrupt the ait tube from the intake manifold on the drivers side just below the air intake paddle. It runs from there to the idle speed motor. It can be a bit of a bugg

The problem you have is that you have a glaze on your rotors,that when you
apply the brakes it tends to make your brakes squeal,kinda like squealing a
chalk on a blackboard,try hand sanding the rotors on both sides until you get
a "rough" surface
( sand untill the glaze is gone).that should do the trick.

ok, i must ask...where is everyone else's cable breaking. mine was wearing
right at the handle and it appeared that it was rubbing on the sheath as it
was pulled out. when i replaced it, i just modified the bracket that the
handle is on, changing the angle that the cable is pulled from. this seems
to work w/ out rubbing. hope this helps.

Are they still available?
If they are, you must be careful in using one.
I have never used one myself, but they have cautioned me to the use of one on
the DeLorean cars.
The bra will chaffered the finish of the stainless steel and leave an imprint
that must be removed by refinishing the surface. That is a job in itself and
an expense you don't need. A painted car is easier and cheaper to restore.
That have deterred me from using one. So take care.

You can replace the trunk and engine cables by using bicycle brake cables.
They have worked for me.
While you are at it check the engine accelerator cable. That can snap the
same way, especially when you are DRIVING! Not a very good situation or
experience for anyone.
If you do replace the accelerator cable, save it and use it to replace the
trunk or engine's cable. Preferably, use it for the trunk cable for it is
longer of the two cables.

My brakes squeal a bit when applied, but "chirp" when not applied. Gently
applying the brakes stops it, but to just drive normally makes it chirp.
Inspection reveals nothing abnormal.

The DeLorean tranny has the final drive gear flipped over onto the other
side so the output rotates backwards; internally it all works the same,
save that one gear. I don't know whether a regular front wheel drive
transmission could be converted easily by a machinist or a transmission
specialist, but I think the point is moot since the DMC auto was not used
in any other US-marketed cars.

If you still have the original polymer clutch hydraulic line it is
possible that the clutch is worn out. As the material in the line
fatigues (from use and heat from the nearby coolant lines) it can
prevent the clutch from disengaging properly and wear it out
prematurely.
Assuming you need parts, it is probably a good idea to acquire them from
a DeLorean parts supplier. As far as selecting a mechanic goes, I don't
think the DeLorean clutch is very different from other clutches. If you
have an honest mechanic that you trust just ask him if he can do the
job. Otherwise . . . I would be wary about taking my DeLorean to a
stranger.
While you are at it, I suggest you replace the polymer clutch hydraulic
line with a stainless steel one (if this hasn't been done already). It
will make a big difference in drivability and clutch longevity.
As for checking prices, DMC Houston publishes a price list at their
website which you can use for comparison shopping. Prices from the
traditional parts houses are not that different from your local auto
parts store, and the support is worth having.

###Nothing special, but do you trust just anyone with that car? Things to watch out for are knuckleheads that grind the locating pins off the flywheel.

###It probably got oily. Maybe a bad rear main seal or leaking clutch slave. A leaking rear seal will not usually hurt the clutch, it just makes a mess under the car, but a leaking slave can drip in that area.

Well, after sitting through a couple of winters in my garage, I was able to get my DeLorean already for a summer of fun (hopefully)
When I had parked it, I had drained the coolant and drained the tank. During it's storage I had replaced them pesky trailing arm bolts and the various filters. (Fuel, Air, Oil)
Additionally I had used BarDahl's 'Top Oil' fuel stabilizer in case I didn't get the tank quite empty and had sent some oil down the air intake to lube the upper cylinders.
So, upon reactivating, I fill up the tank with gas, (mixed with a bottle of the 'Top Oil') changed the oil and refilled the coolant. Started her up and bleed the cooling system.
All sounds fine and dandy, except (oh no) that when I started her up, the exhaust was very noticeable, i.e. billowing clouds of smoke, white smoke. But I let her run, bleeding the coolant and waiting for the fans to kick in. Still smokin
The next day, I started her up again, and low and behold, the exhaust was nice and clear, normal even, runs beautiful smooth and steady. So thought I'd go for a spin around the block, and again, about half way around the block, the smoke w
Checked the oil and it seems clear, not obvious traces of coolant.
Any ideas on what it might be? Any courses of action?

My guess is the first time was cause by the oil you put down the
intake. The second time may be the additive you put into the tank
has somehow separated and was drawn into the fuel system or
it could have been some residual oil pooled somewhere in the
intake that was dumped out when you took the car for a spin.
Check you oil often for level and color. You shouldn't be gaining
oil and it should not turn chocolate brown and frothy. You should
also check your coolant for evidence of oil. You could also take
the car in and have a leakdown test to determine if you have
problems with the rings or valves.

DMC Houston is currently waiting for a supply of clutch master cylinders. I
know because I am waiting myself.
Does anybody with a VIN close to mine (5701) know of recurring or production

Sorry Kayo, but I disagree. I've had one for years and never had a problem.
I had it on my car in Cincinnati last summer. They were offered through the
old DeLorean Club of America. Mine is still in good shape and has DMC
embossed on the Front. If there was enough interest perhaps we could offer
mine as a pattern and have some made. Anyone know of a supplier that would
do a small run of bras for a reasonable price?

I replaced the clutch and pressure plate and ring myself and wished I had
never started , it took nearly two weeks to do the job with time spent
between my "duties "! the clutch came from Renault in GB .

To anyone interested in purchasing a DeLorean, I have a 1981 for sale.
It has approximately 6000 miles on it, 5-speed, grey leather int., It has a
few minor flaws; cracked mirror housing, trunk cable and fan switch need
replaced, passenger window not working, needs new tires. The car has not
been painted, body's in excellent shape. The price is $14,000. Car is up in

Your problem is a leaky crankshaft seal (rear main). Apparently this seal
failed prematurely. This has caused oil to leak on to your clutch
components
causing clutch chatter and slippage. This is also the cause of your oil
leak.
There is nothing special about the DeLorean clutch therefore no special
tools are required.
The transmission is built by Renault and is exclusive to the DeLorean. The
service procedure could be performed by a transmission shop but you would
be better off finding a shop that specializes in premium European
automobiles like Porshe, BMW, Volvo, etc. Discuss the procedure with them
and see what they say. Be sure they have access to the workshop manual. A
reasonable price for the clutch job and seal replacement w/o parts should
be $650-$950. If you need additional information you can e-mail me

I have a Pioneer amplified sub tube in my Delorean. It is placed in the
parcel self area and a nylon strap secures it to the rear firewall. The
nylon strap is secured to the firewall with two screws. The strap wraps
around the tube and tightens like a belt securing same. The tube sounds
great and with the amp that powers it being built in it does not take up a
lot of room. Plus it only takes about five minutes to remove it and again
you have the pure stock look.

The easiest and most economical way to increase bass without altering the
car in any way is by installing a sub woofer box. This unit can just be
placed on the parcel shelf. Check out the Crutchfield Catalog for many
quality models.

Unfortunately, no. Keep in mind that the DeLorean is actually a front wheel
drive car with the body placed backwards. The drive wheels actually run
backwards from a normal set up. Finding a physical match between a trans of
another vehicle is tough enough much less finding one that runs backwards.
Besides, why would you want to substitute the factory unit, it is strong
and reliable and very available.

Bruce,
Since my ownership of my DeLorean for the last three years, I always wanted a
bra for my car. At that time I asked many DeLorean distributors, suppliers,
club and members but to no avail.
I do remember your car with the bra in Cincinnati. I do believe if my memory
serves me right, your car was the ONLY car that had a bra at the meet. Your
DeLorean with the bra, it looks good! That is why I remember your DeLorean.
I do believe what you are telling me is real for you do have the "experience"
to justify your statement.
On the other hand, one person who is well known and he owns a famous DeLorean
service depot (I will not use his name at this time and you also know him
too.) He told me that a bra will "mar" and leave an imprint on the surface
of the stainless steel finish. I would and could not hesitate in disagreeing
with his suggestion in avoiding using the bra, for he is very well respected
as a technician and a mechanic within the DeLorean marque. He has much
experience in this area. He told me that in the past, he had to refinish the
surfaces of DeLoreans that used the bra. I also agree with him for I know of
other who use bra on non-DeLorean cars and there is etching, chaffing,
marring and discoloration!
Since there are no surface damages to your car, there can be only several
reasons. One, possibly that your bra is that well made and padded and with
the proper ties to hold it down to prevent the effects? Two, that your usage
of your car is with the bra is on the minimum and not used daily in the rain,
snow and sunshine which will produce the damages to the surface of the
stainless steel?
Why the failure with the other cars? Maybe these owners mounted the bra
incorrectly? Possible they never taken the bra off occasionally to clean out
debris between the car's surface and the bra that can cause the chaffing and
marring effect?
Anyway, despite all the problems, I still want the bra like many other
owners. Many other owners and myself would like to have a bra for their
DeLorean. If you still would be kind enough to allow the use of your bra as
a pattern and if the cost is not astronomical. We as a group, with a good
size order, we may be able to perk some interest in a company that
manufactures bras to make them for us.
I do drive my car daily. An average of 70 miles daily on the minimum -- ALL
year round -- snow, rain and sunshine. I have collected many "dings" from
this daily usage. If the bra do damage the surface with chafing marks I can
refinish the surface of the stainless steel surface to the proper factory
finish. I would preferred the chaffing marks over the rocks and other
objects that cause "dings" on the surface that are more difficult to remove.
So -- ANY DMLers OUT THERE INTERESTED IN A BRA? Maybe we can get together to
make this item a reality for us?

My wife and I have two cars with bras, although we haven't found a bra
for our DeLorean yet. We learned from other people who had bad bra
experiences what the problem is and how to avoid it.
During regular use, the trailing edge of the bra will collect dirt,
dust, and grit from the road. Even the tightest bra vibrates a little
as you drive (some flap up and down violently) and the vibration causes
this grit to abrade the surface of your car. Over time it will cut a
horizontal line across paint or even stainless steel.
Thus, if you allow this grit to build up, the bra will do more harm than
good for your car's finish.
The secret is to keep both the car and bra clean. As long as you
regularly wipe away the grit along the edge of your bra it will not be a
problem, and your bra will perform its function well.
Bruce says he has been satisfied with his bra, so I will bet he keeps
his car clean. How about it Bruce, am I right?

I replaced the seals on my car last summer. Make sure you have the
seals installed correctly - the little thin portion should be on the outside
of the door opening. It also helps let the car sit out in the sun on a warm
day with the doors closed to soften the seals and get them to take
a set.. As the seals break in, the doors will get easier to close.

spending an hour putting them on, I couldn't get the doors to close properly.
First, they wouldn't even close half-way, and after readjusting them a bit, the
doors would close fully, but only after applying massive amounts of force. I
let them sit for awhile, hoping that they just needed to settle in, but that
didn't work.
I called Gradys, and they said that they have a procedure for grinding down
the edge that the seal mounts onto, but I would have to talk to Rob about it.
I've called back a few times but Rob has been to busy to explain the procedure.
So... could anybody else shed a little insight into this procedure? Or are
there any other hints for getting this to work?

The only companies that make large quantities of rear-engine transmissions
are Porsche and Volkswagen. Go to a junkyard and take some measurements
if you want. I'm willing to bet either would fit reasonably well in the
space, although you might have to modify the plastic body shell
especially for the VW which is quite funny looking.
Transaxle swapping is a nontrivial task because, everything has to line
up, and the odds of that are small. It is much harder than swapping a
transmission for a front engine/rear wheel drive car. In addition to
having to physically fit, the distance from the input to the output has to
be the same both in length and height. And, the axles have to be
modified, usually, because the splines won't be the same, or the axle is
the wrong length, or both. Then you have to make the mounts...
Swapping a transmission to a different type should be considered about
like swapping an engine to a different type. You should not do it to fix
a problem, but only because you want to, because you are almost guaranteed
to create more problems than you solve.

I mention this about once per year, and today feels like the day to say
it in 1999:
The front wheel drive Eagle Premier / Dodge Monaco used a 3.0 liter
version of the PRV V-6 engine. While the engine is not a direct swap,
it is roughly the same size and shape as ours. At a glance, the
transmission also looks to be about the same size & shape as the
DeLorean transmission (although oriented backwards).
The Premier / Monaco automatic tranny is reliable, reasonably plentiful,
works smoothly, AND comes with automatic overdrive. With some work
(including the same reversing gear the DeLorean tranny has) it could
probably be adopted to fit a DeLorean nicely.
I would not dream of attempting it myself, but I keep hoping that some
DML subscriber will try to adapt a Premier/Monaco tranny and report
their results to us. Endowed with overdrive, an automatic DeLorean
could probably get fuel economy that would rival our 5-speeds.

I have a Bra, but when I go past 50mph it rattles on the front of the car,
it is the one that was offered by the Delorean club of america, perhaps I
am not putting it on correctly. A guy at Advanced Auto parts told me that
he knew some one who manufactured bras for "specialty cars" I am not sure
how much it would cost, but I will try to find out.

Luke,
This is a very common problem, you will find that most DeLorean door seals
ar torn in this area. As Rob indicated grinding the fiberglass in that area
is one solution.
Here are two other fixes.
Spray silicone spray in that area, if the door will open and close easily
than the seal may compress over time. You will have to spray the silicone
on a regular basis.
If that doesn't work, with a sharp razor, shave the excess rubber from that
section of the seal.

Probably the clutch on the air conditioner compressor. A
sound can also be heard in the relay compartment behind
the passenger seat. If the clicking is occuring every 3 seconds
or so, you should have your freon level checked.

That would be the Clutch on the AC compressor.
If it is cycles too often, you probably need a freon charge.

As a side note: If you have to re-charge your freon, look into the new
Enviro-friendly alternitive. I don't recall the name, but your local
auto-parts supply place should have all the details and equipment you
need. It's cheaper then the old bad stuff and you don't need a license to
handel the new stuff. BUT You do need a license to empty the OLD stuff.
But if you have to get it recharged anyways, then you'd have to go to a
licensed shop to get the work done anyways.

Not to get in to a long thread on this, but this is really a matter of
opinion. I think it may be covered well in the back issues.
R-12 has actually dropped in price over the years. My local pep boys
sells a 12oz can for about $10.00 (You need a license to buy it).
The most common conversion is to R-134a.
The R-134a does cost a bit less than the R-12, and SOME will argue that
it is safer for the ozone. If R-12 is handled properly and the AC
system is kept in good repair, then there is no ozone issue.
R-134a runs about 70% higher pressure than R-12, so it is required that
all of the O ring seals are replaced. The compressor was not designed
for this higher pressure, so your 17 year old compressor may also not be
too happy with the R134-a. Also know that R-134a does not get as cold
as R-12, and for those of us who have been in the DMC on a hot day know
the cooler the better!
For a proper conversion, the system must be well flushed. If you simply
remove the R-12, replace the seals, and recharge you will be replacing
the compressor within a year. This is due to the mineral oil that is
used with R-12. When R-134a mixes with the oil, it turns to a sludge
that will clog the orifice and dryer.
R-134a is great for a car that was designed for it. The DeLorean was
not. Stick with R-12.
There are other alternatives that claim to be R-12 direct replacements
but be careful of them. Many contain propane which works great as a
R-12 replacement, but if you have a small leak in the AC system it can
explode and be a funeral for a DMC owner, and no one wants that to
happen.
Also be careful of buying R-12 from sources that are unknown, because
very often it is a R-12/Propane blend. Again, the Propane can explode.
DO NOT USE ANY PRODUCT WITH PROPANE (or the likes of) IN IT!
There are some other "snake oil" types of replacement, but I have never
met someone who actually tried it. I have also never seen any unbiased
test results.. (But, I have not looked that hard... R-12 works, why
change?)
All IMHO, I am dont claim to be a expert, and dont even play one on TV.

I'm thinking of replacing the AC clutch on my 85 van (It's dead). I was
talking to my local Auto-Zone manager and he's the one that told me about
the R-134a. His price was considerably less for the R-134a then the R-12.
I asked if I would have to replace any other parts in the system, he told
me I would only have to drain the old system, and refill w/ R-134a. I'm
glad that this issue came up here as I'm sure he wouldn't mind me comeing
back in a year for another A/C compressor. His ignorance would effect my
pocket book greatly. I guess it all comes back to.... Talk to your
FRIENDLY DMC mechanic when you want it done right... even if the job is on
another vehicle! ;)

DMC owners. I'm sorry for sugesting the R-134a

and draining the system), and a few pounds of R134a. Also, the
performance difference between R134a and R-12 is very small. Remember
that all new cars use 134a, and their A/C can be very cold. Really, the
difference is only a couple degrees F, and r-134 is MUCH safer for the
ozone layer. Don't knock R-134a until you try it (or in someone else's
car).

I agree that new cars use R-134 and have cold A/C, but that is because they
run larger compressors than earlier models. R-134 does not have as good of
a cooling coefficient as R-12. Also, R-134 runs hotter than R12, so you can
only run R-134 at approx. 80% of the pressure that you could with R12 to
keep the heat at the compressor the same. That's why the newer ones have
larger compressors. Combine these two things and you can see that R-134 in
a system designed for R-12 isn't going to cool nearly as well.
Now don't get me wrong. R-134 is fine and dandy for newer cars that are
designed for it. It MAY be safer for the ozone layer (despite lots of media
stories, the jury is still out as far as actual scientific facts). So I'm
not advocating using R-12 in new cars. Just in cars that were designed for it.

Do do this properly you should change All the O rings, the System must be
properly flushed of all old oil, the dessicant in the receiver/dryer or
accumulator should be changed.(I'm not sure which the D uses). The
pressures are also higher on a R=-134 sys vs. R-12. 190 psi or so high side
on R12 vs 250psi or more on a 134 system. If done correctly a R-134a
retrofit can be successful as I have done many. However. If you do not get
ALL the old oil out be prepared to replace many expensive parts. I still go
by my rule of Thumb. But back in what you took out. R-12 is still redily
available and cheap compared to what it was about 5 yrs ago. If it leaked
out. Replace the seals, add a ounce or two of oil and recharge. You'll
have nice cold air in the hot summer.

One thing that most people forget also is that the headliners are 1/8"
material as the standard. The replacement most people use is 1/4" This adds
to the interference and new weatherstrip can be difficult and grinding
definately extends the life of the seals and the headliner on the outer

the car, my friend James offered to let me drive his 72 Chevelle Heavy Chevy
instead of my car, and I wasn't about to pass up the chance to drive a bright
orange muscle car. Had I taken my car it probably would have gotten the
other driver's attention and we could have talked for a while. That was a while
back. But when I saw the DeLorean on Messeck Rd. I had gotten into my
friend Mike's minivan and left my D at his house. I was lying down with my
seat reclined when Mike told me to sit up and look behind me. I did just
that and I saw a DeLorean in the opposite lane of traffic about to disappear
from my view. Well, anyway, if you drive the DeLorean I saw in Poquoson,
