Date: 13-May-99 6:48:32 +0000
I was watching Howard Stern tonight
(the official TV show of college students)
and saw an advertisement for a John DeLorean
story on the E! network! It's going to air this
Sunday night (May 16th) at 8:00 E/P. It sounds
like it's going to be everything from his days at
GM all the way through the drug trial.
Set your VCRs!

Date: 13-May-99 16:25:55 -0400
Did anyone happen to see the episode of Scandal last night (May 12) on
Discovery People? It was about John DeLorean's cocaine trial. It was the
first time I'd ever seen it. As with most news items related to the
DeLorean, it was biased against both the car and the man. Hillel Levin,
author of "Grand Delusions," was one of the main people they interviewed. It
had a commercial for the DMC and featured plenty of trial footage and footage
of the factory in operation. I managed to get it taped. It's well worth the
time to watch. If anyone's interested in having a copy made, email me
privately.

Don't look for the cheapest D you can buy. I purchased a 1981 D for $12,000
then spent another $11,000 to have the car gone through mechanically. D's
are great cars but not for someone on a budget. Do yourself a favor and
spend the money on school. After you have a good education you will be
making enough money to buy and play with a D.

Received this reply from egroups tech support regarding the repeating
message problem withthe digests:

Unfortunately, the digest is not working properly and, when it is sent
out,
it ends up containing many messages from the many days that it has not
been
sent out. The programmers are presently working on creating an all-new
digest feature from scratch to replace this faulty one. In the meantime,
the
individual e-mail and web-only message modes work properly and would be
more
convenient if users continue being annoyed by the digest problems.

Hello,
Soem guy had a DeLorean for sale on ebay, he had a 81 gas flap hood also that
he was gonna throw in if the price went so high. I don't believe it did. I
think it had one blemish (due to the problem why the hoods were stopped being
made that way). I can check to see if he has it for sale. I thought it was
intresting that he veen found one.

Subject: [DML] Re: Hoods. Whats that all about?
Date: 14-May-99 17:24:28 -0700
Hello Tris,
There where 3 types of hoods:
1) The hood with a gas flap and lines on each side of the hood.
2) The hood with no gas flap but still with lines on each side of the hood.
These two were on the 1981 DeLoreans. Hood 2 was introduced with VIN 3200
according to Parts Bulletin PS-01-9/81.
3) The 1982 hood was totally flat, but with a "DeLorean" logo.
Why these changes?
Apparantly the first hood was very practical since you didn't need to raise
the hood to gain access to the fuel tank. This was changed apparently
because of an overall better look of the car without the gas flap.
Hood 2 was discontinued after VIN 7199 (81). The reason for this was that
the stamping process cracked a lot of hoods due to the lines on each side.
The 82 hood also got a DeLorean logo. (Not "DMC" but "DeLorean")
Best wishes
Mr. Stian Birkeland

Date: 15-May-99 20:33:58 -0700
After having my car for a year I just discovered that the
wires to the thermotime sensor (the one in the thermostat
housing)are not connected. A wire is connected to one
side of the lead and ran to ground. Wouldn't this
cause the cold start valve to stay open all the time? I am
assuming this was done because the thermotime sensor
is bad. How can I check the sensor?
I have another question on the control pressure regulator.
Mine does not have vacuum connections on it. Is this
the wrong regulator or a later version?
Thanks for helping me return my car to it original condition!

Subject: [DML] GEAR CHANGE WOES
Date: 16-May-99 20:19:51 +1000
While out driving this week, I could not get reverse gear (5 Speed). No
problems, the car wasn't parked in a tight spot and after a little
manouvering, I managed to drive off in first gear. After a short distance
I noticed that the gear selector was getting aprogressively sloppy and
eventually I could only select 3rd and 4th gears. Luckily we (son Troy was
in the passenger seat) weren't far from home and managed to nurture the
DeLorean home. Upon investigation I found that the two steel pins which
held the gear selector assembly to the mounting plate (under the console)
had worked loose and the lever was actually 'floating' . It was attached
only to the selector rod.
The fact that the pins had worked loose caused some concern. What
concerned me most was the possibility of them working loose again and to
determine some way of preventing a reoccurrence. When I reinstalled the
pins, I could not get a tight fit which meant they would eventually work
their way out again. To fix the problem, I drilled a hole at each side of
the mounting bracket above where the pins slide through. I then inserted
the pins and drilled into each pin to about 1/16 of an inch. The holes in
the bracket were then threaded to accommodate a small bolt. I reassembled
the the gear linkage assembly, inserted the pins and locked them in place
using the locking bolts with a small dab of medium Locktite.
Question .... has anyone else experienced a similar problem, and if so, how
was it overcome?

Congratulations on surviving the car show.
I always enjoy participating.
Some people do have a lot of nerve and think that they are in a car dealer
show room. When I display my car, I prop the engine cover open and leave
the doors open. Of course, I remove anything from the car that sticky
fingers might brush against. I just remove the temptation. It is only
natural for people to touch the body, they do not believe that it is metal.
I like it when it is really bright and hot out, people leave with burned
fingers.
I bring an umbrella and chairs and just talk with the people that come by.
Perhaps next time, you will have other DeLoreans to compete against, I think
it is more fun with other D's there.

Grounding out the blue-black wire going to the Thermo-timer will cause
the cold start valve to shoot gas every time the starter motor is
running. Once the engine starts, it will not spray any more gas. This
is fine if the motor is cold. If it is hot, the engine might flood,
making it hard to start. If you are not having starting problems, it
might be best to leave it. However if you want to keep the engine 100%
orginal check the Thermo-timer by measuring resistance from each pin
(there are 2) to ground. Once should be close to 0. The other should
be around 60ohms. If this looks good, give it a functional test.
Connect up the Thermo-timer and then use two needles to connect a test
light to the cold start injector connector (big blue plug). Make sure
the engine is really cold (let it sit overnight), then crank it while
watching the test light. It should go on for a few seconds then go off
if the ambient temp is 60*F. It should stay on longer if it is colder,
and less if it is hotter. I think it should be totally off at 95*F. As
far as I know, all Control pressure regulators had vacuum connections.
It allows the control pressure to drop when you accelerate on a really
cold engine. If the engine is warm or hot, the enrichment control is
not used. There is a thermal vacuum valve located underneath the plenum
that controls this. Look around at the very back of the engine
comapartment for loose vacuum hoses. Good luck!

Neil,
You are right!
The British people call the hood a bonnet and all the USA people call the
bonnet a hood. In the DeLorean Manuals, they call it a hood. So, we shall
all call it a the hood, even though it was made in Ireland.
Just my two cents.

The top speeds are fairly similar - between 120 and 130 mph. The DeLorean
is drag limited (in fact, a 5-speed is just as fast in 4th gear as it is
in 5th) rather than redline limited, which means that the only difference
in top speeds will be due to drivetrain losses in the auto trans sapping
power. The auto in the DMC is fairly good about that, so you should
expect about the same top speed.
However, due to fewer gears in the auto trans, you will take a bit longer
to get there.
Once you do manage to get up over 120 mph (maybe you are in the Silver
State Classic, or feel like spending the night in jail) you've got to slow
down again. An article in the Gold Portfolio mentioned that the DeLorean
brakes are off-the-shelf components. Does anyone know what shelf they
came off of, that is, what car they came from originally, and are the
rotors and calipers from the same car.

Just thought I'd give a little report on the show.. I'm sure Ken will chime
in and give greater detail about the show, but here's the quicky rundown...
Ken Montgomery, Lee Seiler and I had the three D's at the show. It was
loads of fun to shoot the breeze with Ken, Lee and their wives.. I managed
to take my D from Eugene, OR all the way to Dixon, CA (about 1100 miles
round trip) without any problems... Not only was it the first show I have
taken my D to, but it was the farthest I've taken it out of town! Very
scary at first, but it ran like a champ... And when I got home after driving
all day there was no signs of cramping or fatigue normally associated with
long drives in "modern" cars.. Anyhoo, Ken's car has to be the best looking
D I've seen in person and Lee's car had some great add-ons (hand-tailored
dash cover, 5-point seatbelt on the driver's side and a really cool
preheater hose sleeve!). It was a blast! I can't wait to get together with
some owners from this area at some shows this summer (hint hint Oregon
owners!!!). Ken, of course, got 1st in class and I edged out Lee for 2nd
(most likely because Lee was sitting in the shade while I was running around
telling people to vote for me!! <g> But I have a full-body sunburn and
Lee's probably sitting at home quite comfortably not covered in aloe!!)

While the advertised top speed of the 5-speed DeLorean is aroung 125 mph, I
can't help but wondering what the top speed of the 5-speed auto DeLorean is.
Does anyone know. I talked with a previous D owner yesterday who had a 100+
mph speedometer put on his automatic D and he claimed to have reached 101 on
flat ground. Can anyone with an automatic D who has had experience topping
out their car add some input. I would greatly appreciate it

Subject: [DML] Miramar Car show experience
Date: 17-May-99 5:46:01 -0700
This past Saturday I had quite an enjoyable time at the MCAS Miramar auto
show. I visited with Fil Vigil, owner of the ony DeLorean in the show.
Pictures of Fil's DeLorean are on my web site at
http://www.jps.net/cjmack/delorean.htm
There was almost every type of muscle car at the event including the Pontiac
GTO and Ford Mustang. There were even 4 Pantera's there along with a '68
AMC AMX. All the owners that I talked to were more than happy to answer any
questions I had about their cars.
Fil's car caught quite a lot of attention.
I was amazed how many people flocked around Fil's D. One individual
previously owned a DeLorean and told me about his experiences with his D.
He had bought a black int auto D from a used car lot in '86 and sold the car
about a year later. Apparently he liked the attention he got from the car,
but he complained about the acceleration of the car, the periodic shutting
off of the cooling fans (which would often leave him with an overheated
car), and the auto transmission computer governor malfunctioning which he
said would cause his car to downshift on the freeway for no apparent reason.
I was wondering, I know that now updated are available to remedy most, if
not all these problems, but were there any available back then in the mid to
late 80's? Please email me and let me know
thanks,
Christopher Mack

My understanding is that he never actually got the Cadillac dealership. His
severance package called for a dealership along with his retirement pension
provided that he not work in the auto industry for a specified number of
years. By starting DMC, he violated this agreement with GM and lost the
dealership he'd been promised along with his sizeable pension.

Date: 17-May-99 9:31:03 -0400
Since response to the message I put on the list last week concerning tapes of
the episode of "Scandal" that featured JZD has been so overwhelming, I
decided to post this message to let everyone who is interested in getting a
copy know how to do so.
Simply send me a blank video tape (VHS format) along with a self addressed
stamped envelope to return it to you in. I'm not making anything off of
this, so I am not paying any postage. Make sure you've had your return
envelope weighted with your tape at the post office to make sure it will
return to you.
Please allow 4-6 weeks to get your tape back. I can only dub one at a time.
I have cut the commercials, but this isn't a professional job. I did the
best I could with my VCR's, but the picture and sound quality is very good.
I'll record all tapes in the SP mode for best sound and picture. The tape
runs approximately 22 minutes.
Send your tapes and return envelopes to the following address:
Brian Henson
1169 Church Street
Orangeburg, SC 29115
If you have a problem with the tape I send to you, please let me know by
emailing me privately.

My experience and research with D brakes was only somewhat satisfying. Other
than buying rebuild parts from know D suppliers, there was a gentleman at
Girling who let on that the front brake assemblies were from those EARLY
Capris. He never sent the information he said he would. And I merely rebuilt
what I had, given the parts sent from D suppliers.

Neil,
Question for our friendly European counterparts...Would our "hood"
actually be considered the "boot" instead of the "bonnet" since it covers a
luggage compartment and not the engine, or doesn't that matter? Just
curious,

Hi there -
I like to come to a compromise on this situation.... We call the front of a
car the "bonnet" and the back the "boot". However with a rear-engined car,
(a VW beetle for example) the "boot" is at the front, which to me always
sounds silly.
I always refer to the bonnet and trunk at the front of a DeLorean, and the
hood at the back.
Just me being wierd and English :-)
BTW Just spent two hours on the left-hand door of my all new DeLorean model
courtesy of Lee Seiler (arrived on Saturday). Me building this model is like
getting my girlfriend to build a computer, but it's coming along!

Be aware that that frame will only fit a automatic equipped Delorean, the
shifter plate
is welded in place and cannot be removed, and the automatic shifter plate is
totally different from the five speed.

I have been looking for Bill COllins for some time to no avail. It's even
possible that he may have passed away.
Bill Haddad I believe is working as a consultant/lobbyist in New York
state. Very bitter still about the JZD/DMC ordeal.
C.R. "Dick" Brown briefly did consulting for Avanti and Zimmer. He also
worked for Kia, I believe. He was the keynote speaker at the DOA expo
last fall in LA. I believe he is nor semi-retired and does some
consulting.
The secretary, Marian Gibson, lives in NY state, I think. She reads the
DML and posts periodically, but without blatantly identifying herself.

Subject: [DML] New Gullwing from Volvo?
Date: 18-May-99 3:59:09 -0700
There's a rumour going around in Europe that Volvo has plans for a gullwing
sports car. Several magazines have spread this rumour. I thought I'd send an
e-mail to Volvo to find out. I did that and also sent an e-mail to Lotus to
hear if they too had plans for such a car.
These were the answers: While Lotus denied plans for a gullwing
categorically, Volvo was more reluctant in their reply, neither denying such
plans nor confirming such plans.
In other words, Lotus has definitely no plans of producing a gullwing sports
car, but Volvo MAY have such plans. Interesting...
Just my interpretation...

Subject: [DML] Some questions brought up by E!
Date: 18-May-99 9:40:37 -0400
I'm hoping that some of you out there can help answer some questions that
started rolling around in my head after watching "The E! True Hollywood
Story" of JZD. Hillel Levin mentioned that DeLorean had mixed with some
unsavory characters during the years prior to his cocaine arrest. I remember
a name that has come up in Levin's books as well as several other books about
JZD and that name is Roy Nesseth.
From what I've gathered, Nesseth was supposedly involved in some deals with
John involving a ranch in Idaho and a dealership located somewhere in the
Midwest. I can't remember if it was Kansas, Nebraska, or Missouri. Anyway,
Nesseth was supposedly DeLorean's strong arm tactics man. He's named by
Levin as the man who tried to take several DMC's from the quality assurance
center after they'd been foreclosed on by Bank of America. My question is
this: how much of these stories is true, and whatever happened to Nesseth?
Does anyone know of any other unsavory characters DeLorean was supposed to
have been involved with?
On another note, what happened to Bill Collins, Bill Haddad, Dick Brown, and
the secretary who informed a member of parliament about what she considered
improprieties at DMC? I can't remember her name.
I hope some of you out there can shed some light on these questions.

As far as Bill Collins goes, he left DeLorean Motor Company sometime Circa
1980, prior to the completion of the 2nd generation prototype DeLorean (which
is the one closest to the final product) Basically, Collins signed on with
John Z right at the very start up of DMC in the mid 1970s. Collins had worked
together with DeLorean back at General Motors on several projects from the
Banshee and Firebird to the infamous Vega. John DeLorean had a friendship
with Bill Collins and had great respect for him as an engineer, thus when
DeLorean started his own company, he hired Collins away from GM and a
promising offer at AMC to become the Chief Engineer over at DMC. The first
prototypes of the DeLorean (with the sharper lines and tan interior) were all
created and engineered by Collins and his small team of workers. At this
time, DeLorean was still engineering the car independently. When John
DeLorean contracted Lotus to do most of the work, Collins felt somewhat
betrayed. The engineers at Lotus made fun of Collins and his work with the
first DMC for the stupidest reasons. Collins work was constantly being made
fun of and reworked by Lotus which really got to Collins. At this point he
finally broke and turned in his resignation to John DeLorean, who at that
time really didn't seem to care that much. All of this a year or so prior to
the introduction of the DeLorean DMC-12. Collins left DeLorean and started an
RV conversion company with another individual and some investors, however I'm
not sure if this company is still in business.
C.R. Brown left DeLorean at the very end of the company's odyssey, I believe
when they went bankrupt and were bought out by Consolidated. I THINK he went
on to a Vice Presidential job at Mazda or something, but Im not sure. Anyone
else know?

Probably more than the car is worth. The left front fender alone
will run $1500 - $3000. Take a look at the parts catalog
at the DMC website to get an idea what the major components
will cost and then double the cost to cover labor and the
miscellaneous stuff you will run into once you get started.
Unfortunately, DeLoreans with major body damage are
worth more as parts than the difference between it's
maximum selling price and the amount you have to spend
to restore the car.

as far i can tel as a former bodyworker when you would give me the parts id
would kost you abouth $ 4.000,-- til $6.000,-- (depending at the job to get
it done) parts would be arround $9.000,-- til 12.000,-- (depending on what
is damaged)
that could be allready $ 18.000,-- plus the wrack you must payI think they
wil ask between $ 4.000,-- and $ 5.000,-- because it looks nice this wil
bring the car over $ 22.000,-- But you wil have a running accident.
For this price I think you are able to get something thats OK pay and
drive.......!!!!!
good luck.

Dear DML,
Okay, I have heard all the horror stories about Delorean One and I never
actually understood what the hype was about until I called there myself
looking for a part. Ed answered the phone and I told him what I was looking
for. However after a bit of talking he refused to sell me a part after I
told him I had shopped around elsewhere. He told me he "Did not consider me
a customer of his and he would not sell his "other customers parts" to me who
was looking for the "cheap" way out." The American Government has never
allowed monopolies on anything consumer related. I thought competition was
what makes our economy thrive?! I just wanted to share my unhappiest

that do business with Ed, I commend you on your ability to communicate with

note, please support your FRIENDLY Delorean parts suppliers.

Darren,
I couldn't agree with your assessment more! I made the mistake of e-mailing
D1 through their web site before Christmas of last year to see what they were all
about. Before they could tell me anything they demanded my full VIN number for
there records. (no big deal, I thought) Then I asked what it would cost to order
a new set of headliners and a new dashboard cover. They promptly told me that
they were too busy to take on any new customers at the moment, and that I should
call back around March (This was December!) Mind you I did not ask them for any
service, I simply asked for the parts themselves!
At this point I knew I'd never do business with them under any circumstances,
but I had just bought my DeLorean, and I was interested in knowing how much some
general parts were for the car. I knew I took another risk of getting treated
badly, but I still decided to ask them if they had a parts catalog that they
could mail me. They never did reply to my e-mail, and about a month later I got
a xeroxed copy of a brochure through the mail. I didn't think much of it at the
time, until I went back to their web site, (by accident of course!) and found out
that they had a full color catalog of parts that was not even close to what I had
received! I was interested in knowing why I was not eligible for this luxury.
What had I done? Did I offend them in some manner?
Perhaps these people could stand to take the course in marketing that I'm
taking now at Ohio State. We have learned that companies that exist to achieve
customer satisfaction often survive for a long time, whereas companies that exist
to achieve only a profit die quickly. Would you trust a company that obviously
doesn't know this basic fact, with your car? Do yourself a favor, and look
elsewhere when you need parts and service for your cars. I highly recommend
Bauerle Automotive in Ohio and the DeLorean Motor Company in Houston, Texas.
They know what they are doing!

I had a similar experience with DeLorean One right after I purchased my
DeLorean. I needed a water pump, so I decided to give DeLorean One a chance.
I, too, spoke with Ed who informed me that simply changing out the water
pump was ameteurish and that I needed to replace the entire coolant system,
hoses, radiator, etc. I called Stephen Wynn at DMC-Houston and bought a
rebuilt water pump kit and have had NO problems with my DMC-12's cooling
system since. Like Darren, I commend people who can deal with Mr.
Bernstein's attitude and prices, and, because of my experience, I recommend
Rob Grady, Stephen Wynn, and Lincoln Nation when asked about parts.

Justin,
List members appreciate all kinds of questions even from non-DeLorean
owners like yourself, but questions about the cost of repairs should be
directed to one of the DeLorean repair facilities.
Concerning your inquiry about the cost of a complete front end we would
have to see the car or would need a detailed list of all the parts that
need to be replaced, you could have this done by an insurance appraiser or
body repair facility. There are several critical elements to consider.
First and most important is frame damage. If the frame is damaged behind
the frame extension "crush tubes" you will need to replace the entire frame
($6,000 to 9,000). If the left front fender needs replacement the cost will
be $ 1,500 to 4,000. Some suspension components are not currently
available.
If there is extensive damage you would probably be better off looking for
another DeLorean. There are many DeLorens available that would cost you
less than the repair costs of an extensively damaged car.

<< Iznodmad@aol.com >>
I'm glad to see it wasn't just me. As a relatively new owner of a Delorean,
I've already had a run-in with Ed at Delorean One. I purchased a fuel system
rebuild kit which included the fuel pump, fuel filter, hoses, fuel tank boot,
boot cover and the pickup assembly. My car wasn't in running condition and
had sat for many years basically destroying EVERYTHING in the tank. When I
got the kit, the pickup assembly (plastic pickup w/screens) was missing. I
thought "No Problem" I'd just give Delorean One a call and let them know
they forgot it. When I called, I spoke to Ed he explained that that part was
discontinued long ago and no longer included in the kit. (I understand that
things do get discontinued, but the problem was his attitude.) I explained
that the Delorean One Catalog was a little deceptive to show/list parts that
are no longer included in the kit. (What I'm really thinking is Fraud.) He
couldn't see why it bothered me not to receive all the parts I paid for. He
even cited that little legal disclaimer that all catalogs carry that says
"specifications/prices subject to change..." I tried a different approach.
I said that it would at least be nice if I were made aware of this change at
the time of purchase. I told him I still would have bought it! Nothing.
Basically he thought I should be grateful for whatever he shipped and happy
to pay his price. (I guess that eventually, when the rest of the items
discontinued, he'll be shipping out a $500 banjo fitting as a "Fuel System
Rebuild Kit".
Needless to say, I haven't purchased anything from Delorean One since, but
unlike Darren, I'd never heard anyone else complain about Delorean One. I
thought it must have just been me, but now I know differently. I completely
support Darren and urge everyone to support our FRIENDLY Delorean parts
suppliers!
One more thing. When I purchased the fuel system rebuild kit, I also
purchased the shop manual set. The books were fine except for the electrical
wiring diagram of the car which was illegible. (You can see the circuits,
but the numbers and letters cannot be read.) Does anyone know where I can
get a legible copy of just the wiring diagram?
Thanks,
Steve Stankiewicz

Ed has given me that attitude also. I told him over the phone and wrote him a
letter explaining my dissatisfaction with him, his manners and his business

from him, or his company again. I think that he is a bitter old man, who is
realizing that he has lost many valuable customers and a potentially
profitable company because of his attitude and thickheaded remarks. I'm happy
that DeLorean One and DMC Houston split -- kudos to Steve Wynn on such a bold

Date: 19-May-99 10:40:36 -0700
Hello Justin,
Just for the record - please post the VIN, interior color, and type of
transmission of the wrecked DeLorean to the DML list. Many people (including
myself) have the hobby of trying to re-create the lost factory production
records. Or: Do these records exist somewhere??? Anyone???
Another question: Where has the production number "8583 DeLoreans" come
from?
An old DeLorean World quote this number but has no reference. From my own
records, there were certainly around 10,000 DeLoreans built if not more.
Maybe the 8583 production number was the exact production number when
DeLorean Motor Cars Ltd. went into receivership???
I've tracked DeLoreans, in both South Africa and Kuwait, that were sold as
new import cars in 82. The Kuwait DeLoreans (some of them are now in Sweden)
have VINs over 11500 up to around 11800... Of course these DeLoreans could
be former KAPAC DeLoreans that was never titled then exported in late 82...
And - In Norway VIN 556 (5-speed manual & black interior) still exists! This
is a pre-production car, since the guaranteed DeLoreans start at VIN 560.
MAYBE this was a gift to one of the main suppliers (?). The Norwegian
Company DYNO INDUSTRIES made the DeLorean fuel tank!!!

With May in full swing, many DeLorean owners thoughts have turned from
snow shovels to summer driving and car shows. Many of our friends up
north and back east have pulled their DeLoreans out of storage and gotten
them back on the road while our friends out west and down here in the
south are already reporting temperatures in the 90's!
DELOREAN MOTOR COMPANY TO SPONSOR CONCOURS!
We are very excited to be able to announce that we are the sponsors of
the concours at the DOA expo this fall in St. Louis, Missouri. A
midwestern event always draws a large crowd (i.e. Chicago, 1986;
Nashville, 1996; and Cincinnati, 1998), so be sure to register early.
Both Concours and Peoples Choice are limited as to how many entries can
be accepted, so start thinking about it now. Registration forms will be
sent out by the DOA to active members in the next few weeks. If you are
not a DOA member and are interested in participating in the event,
contact us using the information at the end of this message.

RARE AND UNIQUE DELOREAN MEMORABILIA!
If you've been online for any length of time, you're probably aware of
ebay (www.ebay.com), the online auction forum. We've just begun to get
our feet wet with ebay, placing some selected memorabilia-type items that
we have accumulated over the years. Many are one-of-a-kind or otherwise
unique items that do not fall into our normal "product line". Rather than
arbitrarily place values on these items ourselves, we've decided that by
making them available via ebay, those collectors and enthusiasts that are
truly interested in the items can place the values on the items
themselves.

COMPLETE PRICE LIST NOW ONLINE!
While the DMC Online Store is undoubtedly one of the most popular areas
of our site, we've often been asked to create a complete listing of part
numbers, descriptions and prices. Available now at our website is an
Adobe Acrobat PDF file that answers that demand! The free 24 page, 194K
file is the perfect companion to our newly updated and revised parts
manual. You will need the free Acrobat Reader from Adobe to view/print
this file.

NEW PARTS CATALOG COMING SOON!
For years we've also been asked about a catalog - and you'll be glad to
know that we now have one in the works! With 2800+ different part numbers
in our inventory, it's impossible to include all of them in the catalog,
but we're compiling our most popularly requested parts for the new
catalog, which should be available later this summer. In the meantime,
we're adding to our online catalog, complete with photos!

TECHNICAL TIDBIT!
Due to the aggregate-type construction of the DeLorean - stainless,
fiberglass, epoxied steel, and aluminum - electrical grounds are
extremely important and at the same time prone to deterioration. Low
voltage, dim lights, poor drivability, intermittent and varying problems,
and just weird symptoms can be caused by a ground connection that is off
or has high resistance for some reason. A jumpy tach, for instance, is a
dead giveaway for a ground problem. The following is a list of the major
ground connections and the portions of the car they affect.
(1) The negative post on the battery. Just make sure it's tight. It's
easily forgotten and will drive you mad trying to find it, tracing back
through the rest of the car.
(2) On the trailing arm bushing mounting bracket, right side. This is the
other end of the negative battery cable. It will often come loose when
the trailing arm is abused, or will corrode into a poor connection with
weather and road chemicals.
(3) On the RH motor mount. This is a heavy-duty connection and rarely
needs attention. Just remember to reinstall it when you change motor
mounts.
(4) From the frame underneath the header bottle to the through bolt on
the corner connector block of the engine bay. This furnishes ground to
the relay compartment and central electrical control. If it is loose,
there will be lots of transient symptoms with no seeming common thread.
When this sort of thing happens, think "grounds".
(5) On the front left of the frame, where the LH radiator stay attaches
to the frame. This is an important connection. It grounds the fuel pump,
the cooling fans and all the stuff in the dash. Service this every year
with your fuse box (removing each fuse one at a time, cleaning the blades
and reinserting).
(6) The connector block in the LF pontoon, accessed through the washer
bottle basket and cutout. All the connections for the fans and fuel pump
and their grounds go through this block. It has been known to corrode and
burn on high current connections. Beware.
(7) All the other little stuff. Each stainless panel has a small braided
wire to ground it to another panel or to the car. Be sure they're
reconnected if you remove a panel. The radio antenna needs a good ground
connection, and the shield on the tach/fuel lead should be well grounded.

I don't want to continue bashing Delorean One, I had similar experiences,
enough said, so I went elsewhere. I just wanted to put a plug in for Deloren
Motor Center in Garden Grove, CA. Don Steger is a factory trained mechanic
(a damn good one) and their prices are competitive. They are working on my D
right now which has a potpouri of cross referenced parts and amateur fixits
and I have had no negative comments from Don about any of it.

Instead of commenting on the negative aspects of certain businesses and
company leaders (i.e., Ed Bernstien and D1) I would simply like to say a few
positive things about Rob Grady. Month after month I read about horror
stories from unsatisfied customers of DeLorean One and I don't comment. Now I
have to say something.... If you want the exact opposite of Ed and DeLorean
One, such as friendly courteous service, fair prices, and good quality
craftsmanship, just call Rob Grady. I have NEVER had a problem with Rob, nor
have I ever heard anything negative about him or his company what so ever. I
called there just yesterday to get some specs and pricing on a refurbished
'81 that he's working on that I am considering purchasing from him when the
car has completed its restoration. He spent a long time on the phone with me
going over the details, answering every question I could think of. He
understood what I was looking for in a DeLorean, and he was happy to take the
time to work with me on options and 'zilla kits. He was friendly to deal
with, and never once asked me a question such as "what is your VIN?" or "are
you on the DML?" He always provides free seminars at DeLorean shows on how
to keep your DeLorean in top shape, and how to care for it as if it were a
child. Rob just seems like a really nice guy from everything Ive gathered,
and he runs a clean business with friendly service and decent prices. So for
any of you out there who are DeLorean One customers, either satisfied or more
than likely Unsatisfied, try giving Rob a call next time at PJ Grady. He will
treat you like a human being at least, something Ed still has trouble with.
Hopefully Ed will get it right one day.
Just my two cents,
Justin
PS- I don't see how the owner of a for-profit DeLorean sales and service
company could be allowed to sit as the President of a major non-proffit
organization of DeLorean owners......can anyone fill me in on this one?

A list member asked about large electrical diagrams. The DeLorean Owners
Association used to sell these. I bought one from John Truscott. It's
poster size, like the ones in a dealership, and it comes with a legend
printed on legal paper. It's made life a lot easier for my auto electrician.
I think they advertise these posters on the DOA's web site at:
www.DeLorean-owners.org
If this isn't right, let me know, and I'll see if I can hunt up John
Truscott's phone number.

Hey List,
I just wanted to share my experience with DeLorean One, because I
believe I know why they ask for the complete VIN number once they pick up the
phone. This goes back to last January when I just bought my Delorean. I had
purchased the drivers side window from PJ Grady, because mine was broken out
and they were the only DeLorean specialist I knew at the time. Anyway, I
think it was a week later that I found out about DeLorean One on the DML. I
called them up to ask them a few questions and to order a free catalog (I too
received that stupid photocopied catalog.) And I believe that they put the
VIN#'s in a computer or something and put down comments about the owners,
because for some reason I was talking to Ed about the window and I think I
might have asked him a question about how to properly put the window in, and
he asked me where I got the window from and I told him PJ Grady and he blew
up on me. But later on a few months later I called him up again for a price
on the part and after he asked me for the VIN# and I gave it to him, he said
that his computers were down or something like that. So I really think that
they put something in their computers about the owners or something, because
I had my brother call them about 20 minutes later and he gave him a different
VIN# and somehow his computers were working again. Just for that reason I
only do business with PJ GRADY, in my eyes, they are the only DeLorean
specialist that really cares about the car and its integrity. Sorry about it
being so long.
Thanks,
Nick

Subject: [DML] Good experiences...

The reason for my first post was that I was absolutely dumbfounded after
calling D1. I currently have purchased all my parts from PJ Grady. I give
his entire outfit an A+ for their excellent service. They are knowledgeable,
honest, and can give you cost effective options for repairing your car. They
have saved me lots of money and only suggest parts that I need. However, the
part that I am currently searching for is a clutch master cylinder and I am
having a hard time finding one. I first called PJ Grady, then DMC Houston,
no luck with either place. I then decided to try another facility to find
the part, it just happened to be D1. Anytime I have ever called to a place
of business, I have been treated with respect and most of the time a polite
person on the other end of the phone who actually wants to assist me. I
don't think I am asking too much there. If anyone can help me in finding
this popular part, I would be grateful. I just want my D running again!!
Regards,
Darren Decker

Is there another recommend Delorean service shop in so california?

Date: 19-May-99 23:17:21 -0600
When I 1st bought my D in 1985 (8,000 Miles) I drove it from Dallas to my home
in Denver. Although the speedometer wouldn't tell me exactly how fast I was
going, I went for more than an hour through Texas at a tachometer estimated
speed over 100 mph. I topped it out a couple of times just short of 120.
Obviously being in an automatic transmission it takes its time getting up to
speed, but even at high altitude after all these years my car will still get up
& go. I just got my car back from the shop having the fuel system cleaned &
adjusted(among other annual repairs) and can't wait to push the sound barrier
again even at just short of 30K I am certain I can push it over 100 mph.
My 2 cents is its the handling & looks that make the D so exciting and its
(relative) speed is just a bonus. Being in Colorado I test my suspension a lot
and enjoy going out of my way in search of winding roads.
