For a 20-year-old exotic car, the DeLorean is amazingly reliable. It has its share of little gremlins, though. Fortunately, the problems that it has are all well documented and are all fixable. Many of them are fixable permanently. And very few of them will ever leave you stranded. ------------------------------ message 2554 ------------------------------ http://www.eGroups.com/list/dmcnews/?start=2554 X-Mailing-List: dmcnews@egroups.com X-URL: http://www.egroups.com/list/dmcnews/ Date: Mon, 30 Aug 1999 01:18:17 -0700 From: rob.van.der.veer@twinsoft.nl In-Reply-To: <19990827210529.67842.qmail@hotmail.com> Subject: [DML] Re: DMC Size Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit rob.van.der.vee-@twinsoft.nl wrote: I don't know how muich 6'3" is, but I am 1m88 and I'm sitting comfortably in my D. One day, while working on my D at the foreign car repair shop I work at, another D pulled in. The owner, Mike (I think) and I got to talking and comparing stuff on our cars. Since the headliner panels for the doors are not mounted in my car, Mike sees all the magic marker writing on the inside. He says he's got the same numbers drawn (with magic marker) in his doors. 011001/37L (in red) for the left door and 011001/37R for the right. There is also some black writing. Mine says "30/10 M.I."(poor penmanship) and "4580 7051X" on the left and "2/13 C.H." on the right. Mike said he thought his black numbers and initials defered slightly, but he had a bonus piece of black drawn art work on his left door. It was a drawing of familular looking face with big bushy sideburns and a smoke hanging out of his mouth The caption read "Elvis is King." We jokingly wondered if Elvis was big with the Irish UAW, or perhaps Elvis WAS still alive in the early 80's and was sporting a clean shaven face with strawberry blond colored hair. The car would start and run, but the acceleration was terrible. While taking it to the shop, I noticed that it had low voltage, 9 and below, but at times would surge up to 12 and the car would run fine. It turns out the alternator was going bad. Evidently the fuel pump wasn't able to get enough power to pump with the low voltage when I hit the accelerator. I had the alternator replaced and have not experienced this problem since. During the day, approximately half of these cars will sit outside in our parking lot. To combat the heat, and more importantly, the UV rays, we have developed a custom fitted sunshade for the the DeLorean. Made of the same material as the "outdoor" model Carcoon (www.carcoon.com), this material is specifically designed for protection against 100 pecent of the UV rays. To keep the heat out of the car it goes on the OUTSIDE of the windshield (the "magnifying glass"), and is held in place with elasticized corners and secured with a striker pin loop. We've been testing the latest version of the prototype sunshade over the course of the summer. Some tests we ran here with a black interior car, with our custom sunshade and without showed a temperature difference of over 80 degrees (215 degrees F vs 130 degrees F) in open sun on a 95 degree day. A third car with an "accordion" style reflective sunshade was still about 180 degrees F. http://www.usadmc.com/sunshade.html I've been chomping at the bit to begin offering it to DeLorean owners, but Stephen has wanted to make sure that it is perfect. I expect it to be available in time for the SEDOC "Cruise-In" as well as the Expo in St. Louis. I've been using one of the prototypes in my car over the summer and I think it'll also help prevent the a-pillar trim deformation that is so common on cars that spend any time in the sun. ANY car is expensive to insure under your own name when you're 19, which is why most teenagers try to get on their parent's policy, even if they are the ones who actually pay for it. At least you may get a multicar discount. State Farm (NJ) insures based on a recognized appraised value. The price is not bad, but I'm not a single male under 25! Shop around. As far as 19 year olds owning one... my 16 year old son owns a '55 Chevy Belair - he's also a big DeLorean fan. He paid off the car himself by working in the family business after school hours. Now he's working to save up for a frame off resto since the bottom is seriously rusted. He paid $2500 and it runs, though he has years of work ahead of him... and a lot of money. I've never seen a D sell that cheap though. Once you get down to around $5000 or below, you have a car which doesn't run and needs a lot of work and $$$. Owning a beautiful collector car has it's good points but it isn't a cheap hobby. And don't believe the appealing gearhead fantasy that "whatever you put into it you'll get back when you sell it." Unless you're rich enough to buy a creampuff, are very lucky, and wait 30 years, that won't neccesarily happen. I'm not just saying DeLoreans. Buy a run down '81 Corvette and spend $20 or 30 thousand making it like new, and do you have car worth $20,000? Probably not. Do it for the love of it, like any hobby, or don't do it. I paid for my son's car, registered it in my name since he was too young, and let him pay me back in installments. (No pay- we sell it!) But he has been faithful to work hard and pay for it all. If you have no family support like that, better to enjoy shows and reading about them, join a club, save up and get one when you can affiord one you can drive away in. One of the nicest ones I've seen cost $15,000. (P/N 100623).  Beginning with VIN 2711, the windshield was changed to one without an embedded antenna (P/N 110076) and the antenna was moved to the right front fender (Parts Bulletin PS-01-9/81).  Since the embedded antenna version of the windshield was no longer available, a replacement antenna kit (P/N A5000010) was made available for the early VIN cars that needed a replacement windshield. Service Bulletin ST-07-7/81 and its update, ST-12-9/81 gave installation instructions.

Parts Bulletin PI-04-12/81 (issued 12/17/81) states "A fully automatic rear mounted radio antenna is now being installed on all DeLoreans"...  It does not give a VIN breakpoint.  But it does state that this antenna is also available as a kit (P/N 111291) for any owner who wants to convert from either the embedded or right-front-fender mounted version.

My car has all three versions.  VIN 1141 came with (and still has) the embedded antenna in the windshield.  A replacement right front fender (crash by a previous owner) has the hole for the mast antenna (with a temporary plug until I begin restoration of the body).  And to overcome poor reception, I had the power antenna installed in the left rear.

I had many English cars in my life time ranging from Rolls Royces, Bentleys, Jaguars, and other marques. I had driven many other English cars too. Some are good and many are less desirable on my or anyone's list. I still have a "Crew" manufactured 1957 Bentley since 1973. All of these cars has and are plagued with problems. To start with, Lucas electrical system! Need I say more? Wire for fire or hope for no smoke? Did this tabloid writer every address these automotive problems of his own country's marques? Many of my friends who are car connoisseurs jeer and laugh at the English cars. I still kept the English car for what it is, for its good or its bad. The DeLorean is a considered an English manufactured motor car. It is made in Ireland, so it is English? Maybe this writer don't like IRISH produced cars from an American engineer? Since his writing is so able and keen to surgically cut up the DeLorean motorcar on its weakness, maybe he should put his criticisms where it is necessary -- to help save his country's automotive industries. This writer should have addressed his own country's automotive problems and manufactures like R-R will not have fallen into BMW, Bentley will not fallen into VW and Jaguar wouldn't have fallen into the Ford ownership. Which English auto manufacture is next? We, the DeLorean owners of the and users of the DMC-12, we understand our cars and we know how wrong this writer is. After all, Mr. John Z. DeLorean knew the problems with GM. He addressed it by boosting GM from it financial down slide with his GTO. He had saved GM's other branches with his great innovations for the Chevy Blazer and the Corvette. He had "saved" GM several times and given it life back then. "God Save the Queen" and the English Cars -- what ever is still left. Your antenna has been changed. You did not say if you had the plug in the front fender, but if not, your car came with the windshield antenna. I say this because my VIN (3507, Aug '81) is only 35 numbers higher than yours and I have the fender mounted one (which I now use for a C.B. radio since I installed the rear retractable one a few years ago). With our numbers so close together it seems that the change from windshield to fender mount happened somewhere between VIN 3472 and 3507 !! ( I'm sure James Espey or DMC Joe have the exact Vin number). To Richard Strecker: See above. Your antenna on VIN #2320 was originally in the windshield also. To all: I hope this isn't boring everyone, since there was some question about antenna location and VIN number. I actually think it looks nice with the two antennas, one on each side. To Hank Breer: Efren Hicks says your car has windshield, fender, and rear antennas. With your low VIN number, I wonder how you got the windshield AND the fender mounted one at the same time? Radio sensitive technology has improved drastically since the late 70's when the factory installed units were designed. This deficiency is what made the windshield antennas a bad choice. I would like to see if today's auto radio technology coupled with the windshield antenna would make for satisfactory reception. DMC Joe / DeLorean Services / Web Site: ---------- From: Murray Fisher To: DeLorean Subject: [DML] Antennas Date: Monday, August 30, 1999 11:43 AM As a matter of a little antenna history....My work before I retired was in communications along electronic and computer lines. I have had all types of configurations in my cars over the years. I had one in a new Chev slung under the running boards encased in rubber! IT worked on local stations. Then I had them embedded in the windshield in some cars. NOTHING ever was as efficient as an exterior "whip": of some sort and usually the longer the better...with FM, length is of some importance, but AM doesn't matter so much. Basically, for receiving, the more wire in the air the better. The earlier D's tried to eliminate external stuff on the car apparently by building it into the windshield....for those days, it was NOT a good idea, hence the switch to the various configuration of vertical whips. My D is an 81 of October build date and has the left rear whip that retracts out of site or extends when you turn the radio on. I have had three Lincoln Continentals lately that all have both the AM and FM antennas built into the glass. Back to the olden days...however with modern electronic technology, these are tops and I could ask for nothing better. For what its worth department! Next chance you get take a look at one of the GM "Dustbuster" minivans (Lumina APV / Silhouette / TranSport). You will not see any radio antenna at all. These minivans achieved their smooth, futuristic look thanks to technology of the early 90s, which allowed the antenna to be built inside the rear part of the roof (which I believe is plastic). I own both a TranSport with an in-roof antenna and a DeLorean with an in-windshield antenna, and I can attest to the fact that the TranSport gets *much* better radio reception than the DeLorean, especially on AM. Good as it is, the TranSport's radio reception is still not quite as clear as a car with a whip antenna. I have often wondered if this same technology could be used to build an antenna inside or under the rear sunshade louvers of a DeLorean. That would achieve both the look Guigaro intended and the radio performance owners expect. It could easily be pre-ignition. An easy way to find out is to run your gas tank nearly empty and then fill up with the best grade of premium gas you can find (at least 93 octane). If the pinging is pre-ignition it should go away with the premium gasoline. If not, back to the drawing board, but you will have eliminated pre-ignition as the problem. > another thing, when i turn right really hard, my front left makes a knocking > noise. Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit A short quick question for the experts. (But maybe not easy.) I realize that certain production changes and upgrades were incorporated into the production DeLoreans all along, but is there any beginning VIN where most of the earlier problems were resolved via production changes? Does anyone have a breakout of VIN's by major production changes or upgrades? For example, I know that some of the earliest VIN's had a rather anemic alternator that could not keep up with the car's maximum electrical demands. Johnny Carson knows all too well about that one. I was wondering if my DeLorean, being a "later" VIN (6419), came from the factory, or a QAC, with most of the production changes/upgrades in place. I have never had a problem (so far) that required an after-the-fact "upgrade" to solve. I do know that my car, with a rear power antenna, was built (11-81) BEFORE the rear power antenna Service Bulletin was published (12-81) according to DMC Joe. But according to James Espy my car could have left the factory without ANY antenna and the antenna later installed at a QAC. Some other changes/upgrades could have been installed by the QAC or the dealer before I acquired the car in late '82. Could the dealer possibly have been mandated by DMC to install any upgrades before the car was sold? This car was sold new after the 1982 production model began. I am sure some Ammeter Radio (HAM) guys on the list may be more qualified to talk about this than me, but my few years working on Cordless Phones did teach me a few things. While it is true that radio receiver technology has improved over the years with more accurate local oscillators, digital tuners and higher tolerance components, I don't think this will have a huge effect on improved radio performance in the D. I have never opened up the stock Delorean radio, but I expect that in general the radios are not as good as they were 15 years ago. Age effect the stability of the components used to tune the radio. The radio could be re-tuned with the proper equipment, but sometimes in the long run this will cause more problems. Sad to day, but most of the stock stereo's found in todays new cars are better than after market replacements as far as radio reception goes. This is not because they have come up with some new wiz-bank radio technology, it is because they are starting to use a not-so-new idea of antenna diversity. Most of the new cars have multiple antenna's (usually two). The antennas are designed and placed such that in some cases one will be better than the other. Inside the radio, there is a RSSI circuit that can decide which antenna is getting a better signal, and use that one. This is system is running all of the time, so if your turn a corner and the environment is such that the "inactive" antenna is better, the radio switches to that one. This all works because of the way radio signals travel, and bounce. The Physics involved with all of that is out of my scope. The technology has been around for many years. The first time I saw it used in a car was my parents 1988 Mazda. There were two antennas in the car, and the radio never had static. On the front of the radio was a label "Antenna Diversity". Now, Back to the D. Most of the work of Antenna Diversity is done by the receiver itself. I have not yet seen any after market stereo companies that offer Antenna Diversity, so unless someone is going to redesign the radio receiver, I don't think it is going to happen. If your goal is to just get rid of the mast antenna, then a dipole antenna under the louvers MAY work, but the antenna will now be horizontal instead of vertical. This changes the property of the antenna pattern such that when you turn a corner a station that was clear before will quickly be gone. This is of course THEORY, and may work in practice anyway depending on the RF environment in your area. Most of the Diversity systems I have seen use both a Vertical and Horizontal antenna, but a horizontal alone (in THEORY) will not be as good for this application. On that same idea, the windshield antenna is both horizontal and vertical. It travels vertically up the center of the windshield, and then splits left and right horizontal across the top. This is a similar design to the freebie antennas that come with home stereo systems. I have never been able to get a decent signal from those antennas here in Central New Jersey. With all of the RF noise in New Jersey, those antennas receive TOO MUCH! And after all of that, your back were you started. Might as well just try it. I am sure you can find some formulas (Or finished designs) on the net to get the proper length for a dipole to cover the standard radio frequencies. The 'on the car spin balance" is a more conclusive procedure. The standard, Pep Boys, type computer balance procedures balance the tire to the wheel. The "on the car spin balance" the wheels to the body. In more simple terms, the on the car spin balance system greatly reduces the common situation of taking your DeLorean into the alignment shop and quickly returning as soon as you drive at speed when you discover that you get wheel shimmy and or body vibration at certain speeds. A front and rear alignment is highly recommended when ever you replace the tires on your DeLorean. I own a new MobilES unit (CDXE-7850) and it does not have any obvious way of hooking a second antenna to it. Of course, I did not read the instructions that came with it. :) I found on the sony web site they have a feature called "Adaptive Reception", and is defined as follows: Adaptive Reception: Sony's proprietary SSIR-EX tuner technology which can actually adjust the tuner's bandwidth, depending on current environmental conditions. Improved sound quality and adjacent station interference result. Adaptive Reception is not Antenna Diversity, and I would guess this technology improves radio performance similar to Antenna Diversity so the combination of both would be a major improvement. The highest octane level available in many, many places > is less than 93. Here in the mountains of Colorado, 91 is tops. FWIW. Yes Dick, this I did say. But I also said "best grade you can FIND". I guess I wasn't thinking about the folks that live in the clouds on purpose where real gasoline isn't readily available. If Erik does live in or near the high mountains of Colorado he can go to a good speed shop and get an octane booster. That's not a problem. Actually that would be even a better test for troubleshooting the pinging if it is pre-ignition. He could boost the octane up to 95 or even 97 to eliminate the possibility trying a lower octane that might be marginal and not sufficient to overcome the pre-ignition. Or he could come here to Virginia and gas up at sea level with 93 octane. I have a Chevy van that is supposed to run on "regular" gas (at 87 octane) but if I do I consistently get pre-ignition. If I use mid-grade (89 octane) I get occasional pre-ignition under heavily acceleration. If I use premium (93 octane at sea level) it goes away completely. (No, it does not need a tune-up nor is the timing "off".) I also have a Corvette that has a much more powerful engine and it will run fine on any grade gasoline because it has a "spark knock listening" device and a circuit that automatically adjusts fuel and/or spark settings to eliminate knock. Of course in the process the engine is "de-tuned" and it loses some power. So I only use premium grade in it too. As far as I know the DeLorean doesn't have any spark knock detection device (except for the driver's ear). The DeLorean is supposed to run fine on regular grade fuel but I have always used premium grades in mine. It occurred to me that if Erik does have a pre-ignition problem it could be that the engine was tuned for one altitude and was later moved to a significantly different altitude without properly tuning the engine for the new altitude. Race cars have been mentioned as having the "tires" balanced on the car but no one has offered any particular reasoning for that. While the tires and wheels are being balanced on a race car, so is everything else that rotates, the disc brake rotor, the axle, and even the lug nuts (or wheel knock-off as it were). When race car wheels spin at near 300 MPH or even higher, even the slightest imbalance in the drive train can be a problem. You're not going to have that problem with your DeLorean. The off-car balancing, if done properly, is more than sufficient for any speeds you will be driving. The key here is "if done properly". Any grease monkey can attempt to balance a tire/wheel assembly off the car using a computerized balancing machine. There is a little more to it (not much) than just sticking the wheel/tire on the machine and pushing buttons. Correct interpretation of the readings and placement of the weights are critical. But the same is true for on-car balancing. The difference is that the mechanic that does on-car balancing is more likely to know what he doing than the tire jock at K-Mart who was a shoe salesman yesterday, therefore he's qualified, and who learned how to use the balancing machine during his lunch hour today. If you want the best balancing and alignment service, go to a specialty shop. As an aside, if you did balance the wheel/tire on the car and the wheel is later taken off for any reason and not put back on exactly in the same position you have lost any advantage. Splitting hairs, the lug nuts would have to be put back on the exact same studs they came off of as well. > Also should the alignment be checked or anything else done while changing > the tires? This is a no-brainer. Absolutely the alignment should be checked. Whenever I have new tires installed I drive on the new tires for a few hundred miles before doing an alignment to allow for a "break-in" period. With newer high-tech tire manufacturing techniques, this probably isn't necessary but I do it anyhow. I also drive at least 100 miles before having an alignment done when changing out any suspension component such as shocks. When changing tires, all suspension components should be thoroughly inspected such as shocks, ball joints, tie rod ends, and any other moving suspension part, including flexible brake lines. BTW, if you have altered ANYTHING that changes original suspension specifications such as wheel and/or tire size, or lowered/raised the suspended component, the factor original alignment specifications the mechanic uses may no longer be valid. In the high altitude of Colorado (Utah, Nevada, Wyoming, etc.) naturally aspirated engines require lower octane rating. The conventional wisdom is that high altitude adds 2 points to the octane rating, which is why you see 85/87/91 grades rather than 87/89/93 like you do in the rest of the country. Octane booster is almost totally worthless. About the only thing it does is foul your spark plugs. If it worked as well as they claim racers would just use that instead of paying $4/gallon for real race gas. The only reason octane booster people don't get sued more often for false advertising is that they say "boosts up to seven points" or whatever. In fact, when mixed with premium gas, the effect is at most 1 point of octane incrase. It works great when you mix it with 85 octane gas, though - but then why bother? :} > That's not a problem. Actually that would be even a better test for > troubleshooting the pinging if it is pre-ignition. He could boost the Unless the timing is grossly advanced (which would be easier to check and return more definitive results with a timing light) there is no set of circumstances that I can think of that would cause detonation at light or idle load on a stock DeLorean. A little detonation is normal going up a steep hill or at full acceleration in many engines (of that vintage - modern engines should almost never detonate), but not under cruising conditions. An exhaust leak, on the other hand, will be audible under a wide range of circumstances. > knock detection device (except for the driver's ear). The DeLorean is > supposed to run fine on regular grade fuel but I have always used > premium grades in mine. That's reasonable enough. The higher grade fuels typically have better additives and are more 'pure' than low grade gas. But the DeLorean has a very low compression engine which should run fine on just about any fuel grade. As long as you don't have detonation, additional octane, per se, is wasted. > It occurred to me that if Erik does have a pre-ignition problem it > could be that the engine was tuned for one altitude and was later > moved to a significantly different altitude without properly tuning > the engine for the new altitude. I don't think this would make a lot of difference. The difference in octane rating and the difference in air pressure typically cancel each other out (on a naturally aspirated engine). ------------------------------ message 2621 ------------------------------ http://www.eGroups.com/list/dmcnews/?start=2621 X-Mailing-List: dmcnews@egroups.com X-URL: http://www.egroups.com/list/dmcnews/ From: "DMC Joe" Date: Tue, 31 Aug 1999 17:49:27 -0400 MIME-Version: 1.0 Subject: [DML] Re: Spin Balancing Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Dick, I know what you mean, we are lucky here in Atlanta to have a shop that routinely performs spin balances at rates just slightly more than Pep Boys. I am not surprised with your good experience with the computer balance. It appears that the Yokohamas, which we love, are more forgiving than other brands. I think this would be a good time for me to share my experience with this alignment facility. Shortly after I purchased my DeLorean I noticed some disturbing tire wear on my factory installed NCT's associated with wheel shimmy at 55 mph and over. At less than 7000 miles I had the tires replaced by NTW, now NTB. Within the next 3000 miles the same ware patterns started to develop. During this period of time I was contracted to do consulting work with one of the local DeLorean dealerships. While working in their shop and sharing information with their factory trained mechanic he said the following when I mentioned my tire problems. "Yeah; I know what you mean. Most of the cars coming from the factory are out of alignment. We now send the cars directly to an alignment shop when they come off the truck." The alignment shop is still in business with the same owner and still does all of our DeLorean alignment work.
