However having read this article I must make a statement. Too many people make hasty opinions based upon too little information. This always leads to prejudice. History is filled with examples to support this. Mr. Wilson has done just this. He has based his opinion upon one DeLorean and has therefore judged the whole. All of us enthusiasts and owners know how great a car we have, or soon to have in my case. It is up to us to change the image that misinformed people have fed to the public. However, if we cannot change that image it leaves more DeLoreans for the rest of us who know the pleasure and excitement of the DeLorean world, right?! ------------------------------ message 2512 ------------------------------ http://www.eGroups.com/list/dmcnews/?start=2512 X-Mailing-List: dmcnews@egroups.com X-URL: http://www.egroups.com/list/dmcnews/ Date: Sun, 29 Aug 1999 01:10:31 -0400 (EDT) From: William T Wilson In-Reply-To: <37C798D7.78427A24@vol.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Subject: [DML] Re: is stick better; yeah or neah on turbos eh Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit On Sat, 28 Aug 1999, Hickman wrote: > For all yall out there, I have a few q's for yah. Another q is if having a turbo D is The 5-speed has somewhat more acceleration, due primarily to the fact that since it has 5 speeds (am I good or what) instead of 3, you can more easily select an appropriate gear ratio. There isn't any difference in the power output of the engine between the two models, and the auto trans doesn't impose much additional drivetrain load. The auto, of course, is easier to drive. > harder to work on and if the wear is much harder on the car. Thats it It all depends of course on how your particular turbo is configured, since none came from the factory that way. In general if you keep the boost at reasonably low levels (most turbo kits run 5 to 7 pounds of boost) engine life should not be affected much. The turbo kit is more effective when combined with the 5-speed transmission as it is hard to get the RPM into the best power range with the auto. ------------------------------ message 2513 ------------------------------ http://www.eGroups.com/list/dmcnews/?start=2513 X-Mailing-List: dmcnews@egroups.com X-URL: http://www.egroups.com/list/dmcnews/ Mime-Version: 1.0 Date: Sun, 29 Aug 1999 19:55:11 +1000 From: "R. I have had my DeLorean about a year and one half now, and it was just as frustrating as the article suggests, of course, until I got the bugs worked out. Now, however, driving this machine is about as exhilerating as one could possibly imagine. I think the real shame is that DMC was not able to evolve, as I'm sure that there would have been recalls to take care of these little problems, and over time, this vehicle would have certainly become the car that JZD had envisioned. As an example, I just saw in the paper that Acura is recalling its 3.5RL. I think we can all agree that this is a fine automobile from a great Automobile Manufacturing Company. In contrast, the DeLorean has had to endure through the toughest of time with only the owners and enthuiasts to offer support. Lastly, has anyone seen the prices of 81 Vettes, the costs of keeping them running, or for that matter, the cost of parts? I, for one, and glad I own a Delorean, instead of of a Vette. I wonder if this gentleman knows that he touches a nerve with his negative press, and that is how he gets his jollies. Maybe what we should do is just ignor this fella, as there will always be someone out there that will have a negative effect on the pleasures of owning and driving this awesome vehicle that we fondly refer to as the D. The earliest '81's (prior to VIN 3200) shipped with two formed style lines and a small door in the hood to access the fuel filler cap. This was superseded by a version of the hood without the door, but retaining the style lines, which was itself superseded by a totally flat hood.  This all occurred in the '81 model year.  See http://www.delorean-owners.org/legend/diff.html for some pictures.

The inertia switch is a safety device designed to be activated in the event of an accident or roll-over.  It shuts off power to the fuel pump (to minimize the chance of fire) and activates the door-unlock mechanism.

This was just covered a few days ago with Mr. Espey adding some new info. Very early cars had the windshield antenna, later cars had a fixed mast on the right front fender, somewhere along the line they moved from a fixed mast to a manual retractable mast (still in the front fender), then finally to the power antenna in the left rear fender. Some of the cars with the windshield antenna would have had the front fender antenna installed at the dealer after the factory issued a service bulletin on it. I don't have my book of bulletins handy or I'd give you the VIN numbers it covered. It was mid 1981 IIRC. I wanted a really unusual car, something neat-looking, fast...and I stumbled upon this mailing list!!! I began subscribing to the mailing list, going through the DeLorean Web Ring almost weekly, and saving like crazy to get one. But lately, I've been having some second thoughts; I've noticed that the majority of posts on the mailing list are about mechanical features/fixes/problems (although I don't know what I was expecting :)). I am quite unknowledgeable in auto-mechanics (but am learning more every day thanks to you guys :))...does the DeLorean really have this many problems?! Please...make me feel better...tell me that they don't, and that I'll be able to get one and drive it nice and peacefully, at least until I learn enough about cars to be able to tinker. That is incorrect. The original plan was a 50/50 split, but when it was realized that there was a far greater demand for the manual vs. the auto, production ratios were modified. I don't have the numbers but less than 1/3 of the total production run were automatics. I am quite unknowledgeable in auto-mechanics (but > am learning more every day thanks to you guys :))...does the DeLorean > really have this many problems?! Look at it this way: You have no way of knowing if an owner does NOT have a problem to write about. You rarely hear about those DeLoreans that don't have problems. ("If it ain't broke, don't fix it!") If owners wrote frequently about their DeLoreans that did NOT currently have any problems, the DML would be suffering massive gridlock. Anytime you put together any machine with thousands of parts and hundreds of rotating parts, there are going to be some problems sooner or later. Also keep in mind that the DeLorean is pushing 20 years old. Most of the problems written about here on the DML are not unusual, in numbers, for ANY automobile nearly 20 years old, albeit some are unique to the DeLorean. Show me a 20 year old Chevy or Ford that doesn't have frequent problems! BTW, I have a 1984 Corvette that has given me FAR more problems than my DeLorean has. I recently donated a 1980 Oldsmobile and a 1983 Dodge to charity because they had so many problems that I considered them worthless. They had both been daily drivers. At some point most daily drivers are not worth the repairs they require. The DeLorean, of course, with a MUCH greater residual value for a variety of reasons, is an exception to that. Mailing lists are designed for owners to share technical information regarding problems, repairs, parts and more. The DML is no different. Owners are not going to post messages to say: my car runs great, I have no problems, what do I do ? If you look through the archives you will notice that in between the service issues there is an overwhelming number of posts from owners talking about how much they love their DeLorean's and what great cars they are. If you are considering buying any limited production automobile that is 18 years (plus) old, don't expect to own a vehicle that is problem free. If you are having second thoughts about owning a DeLorean you probably shouldn't purchase one. Things break sometimes and need to be fixed. I've wanted a Delorean since I was 5. I'm 19 now and just purchased beautiful 4512 just 2 months ago. Since then it has given me some hell, but that's what makes owning a Delorean fun and adventurous. Some of the coolest things to do is take apart the interior and find hidden drawings and initials. I went into purchasing the Delorean knowing full well it was going to cost me. if you have that mind frame and look at each individual fix as an adventure, then things will go well. Some of the Deloreans out there have 250K+ miles on them. that goes to show that, once you get the bugs worked out and start maintaining it like your only child, it will last for a loooooong time. any questions, just e-mail me. erik geerdink ------------------------------ message 2540 ------------------------------ http://www.eGroups.com/list/dmcnews/?start=2540 X-Mailing-List: dmcnews@egroups.com X-URL: http://www.egroups.com/list/dmcnews/ From: "."
