You must have been watching the scene when Marty was being chased through the parking lot. Remember, parking lots were not designed for this type of driving! Hypothetically, if you *did* manage to accelerate to 88 mph in a Civic or Camry (or VW van) within the confines of a parking lot, you would probably not have room to stop or turn before you smashed into something. It takes a sports car (e.g. a DeLorean) to handle this type of driving. Please take my word for it. Do not test that hypothesis at you local mall. I didn't use a stopwatch, but I think the most accurate 88 mph scene of all three movies was the first one, when the DeLorean was driven by remote control. It only takes a few seconds. That looked like a pretty accurate depiction of DeLorean acceleration to me. - Mike Substelny ------------------------------ message 2429 ------------------------------ http://www.eGroups.com/list/dmcnews/?start=2429 X-Mailing-List: dmcnews@egroups.com X-URL: http://www.egroups.com/list/dmcnews/ From: Gus Schlachter Date: Fri, 27 Aug 1999 09:19:04 -0500 MIME-Version: 1.0 Subject: [DML] Re: DeLorean Stock Certificate Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----_=_NextPart_001_01BEF097.1E3034DA" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit ------_=_NextPart_001_01BEF097.1E3034DA Content-Type: text/plain Boy, at $1000 a share, DMC should go public again! :-) Gus Schlachter Austin, TX VIN# 4695 > From: Marc A Levy > Subject: [DML] Re: DeLorean Stock Certificate > > Other than the car itself, this is one of the most expensive collector > items I had run in to. > > When speaking to DeLorean collectors, I was hearing prices of over > $1000. Unless you have experience with this procedure the fuel distributor could be easily damaged. Replacement cost for this part is now in excess of $700, less labor. As long as the sensor plate and adjoining venturi are clean, deposits (grime) coating the inside walls of the mixture control unit should not effect the performance of the fuel/air system. Spraying the control unit with carb cleaner while the engine is running will cause the grime to liquefy and be sucked into the combustion chamber where they will be safely burned out of the system. No matter > what product you use constant sun exposure > will damage your dash and binnacle. This is very good advice. I believe that the most common waste I have observed among DeLorean owners was allowing their interiors to absorb excess UV by allowing sunlight in through the windshield and window glass. Windshield reflectors do more than just make it more comfortable to enter your car on a hot day! When you plan on preserving your car for the long term, you should use a windshield reflector year round. Some people use a car cover, but it seems a shame to cover up such a beautiful car when it is out in public. Another tip: Always park your car facing away from the sun (usually North, unless you are south of the equator). The DeLorean's sunshade louver does a good job of protecting the interior, take advantage of it. Finally, last year I made custom sunshades to fit inside my *side* windows. I cut two sheets of corrugated cardboard to the shape of the windows and covered them with silver lamé fabric. The beefy DeLorean window frames hold them in place without any adhesive or coupling device, even when the doors are up. When not in use they lay flat on the rear deck. They look good, work well, and are easy to use. With these plus a windshield sunshade I keep my interior cool and totally protected from the sun, yet my DeLorean still looks beautiful in any parking lot. - Mike Substelny ------------------------------ message 2436 ------------------------------ http://www.eGroups.com/list/dmcnews/?start=2436 X-Mailing-List: dmcnews@egroups.com X-URL: http://www.egroups.com/list/dmcnews/ Date: Fri, 27 Aug 1999 14:14:10 +0000 From: Robert Brandys MIME-Version: 1.0 References: <19990827050508.10349.rocketmail@web128.yahoomail.com> Subject: [DML] Re: 0-88 Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit according to the original Road and Track testing of the DeLorean it reached 76.5 MPH (1/4 mile) in 17.9 seconds. 100 mph in 40 seconds. The best, fastest and safe way to clean the fuel components and the area around it is to use products such as a carburetor SPRAY. Gumout is one manufacturer of such products. They have a liquid "pour" product too -- do not use this one for this situation. The liquid product is for adding into the fuel tank. They now have a specific product for fuel injection systems call Gumout Fuel Injection SPRAY. I have used both Gumout SPRAY products on the DeLorean and my other collector cars. There should be no adverse reactions or damages if used correctly. DO BE CAREFUL NOT TO OVER SPRAY OR DRIP ANY RESIDUAL SOLUTION ONTO ANY PAINTED AREAS OR "CERTAIN" PLASTIC PARTS OF THE CAR, such as hood covers, bumpers, lens and etc. The products liquefies all of the dirt, the oils and the sludge on the outside and the inside of the fuel components and the system by floating it all away. If the accumulation is on the inside of the fuel component, just spray onto the accumulation, it will liquidly and burn away in the engine with the fuel. When spraying into the intake, do raise the RPM, spray just enough to "clean" a little at a time and to prevent the engine from choking out. You will be amazed how clean the solution will leave the components and helping the engine's performance. One can over spray onto surrounding areas causing discoloration or damages. Once the solution is completely dry it is harmless. These are the products on the market for cleaning the fuel system and its components. Again, no stocks or share holding with the company, just sharing the experiences. You will get in into the habit of using these products more often. John DeLorean himself is IIRC, 6'4". The car was designed so he could drive it comfortably. When I first sat in a D and closed the door (a revelation in itself!) I was sitting high in the seat and was very amused by the headliner which "fed" my head into the roof as the door closed - ie it hit me on the head and pushed me into the gap in the middle which seemed designed to fit it. In the normal driving position there's still plenty of room for me and I'm 6'1". It's generally accepted to be one of the best sports cars for tall people. BTW, after the car was first produced, they sat one of the smallest secretaries at the factory in the car, and asked her to close the door. She couldn't. Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1 Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Gus, I wish I could tell you that you are wrong but based on your description you may be looking at an engine overhaul. It's not the water pump or oil leak that concerns me it's is the blue smoke. It seems a little premature that at 100K mi. you have developed this condition, on the other hand its possible that due to an inoperative speedo angle drive and other unknown engine history you may have a lot more engine ware than we realize. A temporary fix for your water pump leak is the use of "stop leak". Go to your local auto supply store or auto department (Wal-Mart, K-Mart) and purchase Bars stop leak. Follow the directions and your pump leak should cease. There's not much that can be done about the smoke at start up but the oil leak may be easily corrected depending on its source. Well.....I'm glad I did. When I was getting ready to leave at midnight from Maine my car wouldn't start!!! It had been fine..this was the 1st time ever that it wouldn't start. Good timing, eh? Well, since the car was dead I went to bed all pissed off. As I laid there I remembered I had been looking under that part of the car earlier in the day making a list of stuff I wanted Rob to look at. I thought perhaps I hit the inertia switch or something stupid like that.....So, I went back into the barn and pulled up on the plunger and it didn't stay up. Now at the time I didn't know that I was supposed to stay up, It just snapped back down. But I tried to start it again and YES!!! it started. So I repacked the car and headed to New York. During the 200 point inspection Rob come over to me and showed me the switch AND the wiring harness....both were melted!!! It shorted out somehow. Rob was amazed that I even made it. Rob wanted to keep the switch as a "show and tell" as he said he hadn't seen one do that before. So, if your car hasn't had the inertia switch looked at recently, give it a peek. I guess there was a recall on this? so that it's mounted in a different place? I enjoyed my stay in New york and got alot of safety issues taken care of. It's nice to have someone working on your car that actually knows what they are doing. I only wish I lived closer to New York! It was very valuable having someone there that had done this many times. I changed mine in my garage, by myself on floor jacks and would guess overall it took 10 hours, but the work was spread over most of the winter and included a transmission rebuild so it's hard to be specific. ---------- > From: JOHN_GEULEY@HP-UnitedKingdom-om14.om.hp.com > I have also seen that the labour to get this installed is approx 7-10 > hours !! I use a nut driver with a piece of scotch tape over the nut. Once the nut is started, you can remove the torn tape ... or not.

Anyone know where I can get one of the connector plugs that they used to connect to the main wiring harness? Local stereo shops didn't have anything. One guy called it a "molex" connector?? Anyway, I need the side that is on the Craig stereo. 9-pin female (on the wires - male if you're looking at the outer plastic shell). The original stereo is in perfect condition so I don't want to cut it off. And I definitely don't want to cut off the plug on the car's wiring harness in case I ever want to go back to original. One of my cars had a dash that looked dull no matter what protectyant I used, ther Clear Guard was the only thing that made it shine. Do not go anywhere near British journalist/broadcaster Quentin Wilson - he's done it again! The Daily Mirror in England (Friday 27th August 1999) published an article written by Wilson which is completely outrageous in his condemnation of the DeLorean marque. http://www.dawsoncity.free-online.co.uk/quentin.jpg (scanned copy of newspaper) He is also presenting a documentary called "The Cars the Star" for the BBC this autumn featuring our beloved DeLorean. Take my advice and have nothing to do with him or his production team at Birmingham. A couple of years ago he rubbished the car in his "Ultimate Classic Car Book" published by Dorling Kindersley, and he's still at it. I don't mind constructive criticism but this time it's personal! Mime-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset=us-ascii Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Hello List. I just finished watching the show "Politically Incorrect" where they bring four guests (usually celebrities) and they debate about current issues. Well tonight (08/28/99) in his monologue host Bill Maher was poking fun at George W. Bush (or his father, doesn't matter). Anyways, Bill asked George: "Why aren't you still driving your DeLorean?" Now this statement got me wondering... Was Maher relating George W. Bush's "no comment" on past use of cocaine with JZD's drug trafficking scandal and therefore making fun of the DeLorean, or did George W. Bush once own a DeLorean? I think it's the former, but you never know... In any case, I was happy to hear the DeLorean mentioned. Any thoughts?
