It is the source of my antifreeze leak. It would appear that there are many parts that interfere with the water pump R&R. Yuk! Not that I'm afraid of the work, I just know that the more parts that I touch, the higher the likelihood of my breaking something else. :-) This engine has 100k miles on it, drips oil on my garage floor (which is keeping the antifreeze from soaking in) and blows blue smoke out the tailpipe, particularly when started. What is really needed here is an engine rebuild, or even a new one. Assuming, of course, that I have that much money burning a hole in my little pocket. I just want to be able to drive the thing, allot, and I'm thinking that an engine swap will prevent much weeping and gnashing of teeth later. Or am I overreacting and being a baby? Since then, I have been discovering/uncovering very interesting 'fudges' with my car. Here's the list so far: 1. Air conditioner Low Pressure Cut-Out Switch was bypassed. I removed the bypass, recharged the freon, and it works fine. I can't really understand why someone would bypass the pressure switch unless the system had a leak or the compressor was shot. The compressor now cycles properly, the air is very cold and has been for the past 3 months. No leaks either. I inserted a special dye into the R12 and looked for leaks. Nothing. 2. Brake fluid resevoir float sender plug removed and tied up. I cleaned them off, reattached them, no problems. Why would someone purposefully detach the float sender wire and tie it up nicely with a tie-wrap? Again, it makes me think that something was broken... but, brakes are 100% and the brake light isn't on. 3. Cooling fan. One of the cooling fans was unplugged and the plug tied up nicely. It was the driver's side cooling fan. Is this somehow related to the air conditioner? Can you think of a worse condition: AC Low Pressure Cut-Out Switch bypassed, compressor on full time, A/C cooling fan unplugged. I plugged it back in and it came on properly. 4. Low note on the horn unplugged. Plugged it back in, works fine. Now, either I'm paranoid that every plug is faulty on my car and about to unhook itself magically tie-wrapping itself somewhere closeby, or the last guy who owned my Delorean had a bad mechanic or had a fetish for unplugging stuff. Can anyone come up with a reasonable hypothesis as to why any/all of these items would be unplugged or bypassed in the ways which they were? If I find anything else, I'll be sure to post. I would check all of the rubber parts, and open up the fuel tank to make sure it is clean BEFORE you try to start the car. If all looks fine, change the oil and drive it home. You may want to get a copy of the DeLorean owners directory to find other owners on your way home in case you have a problem. Make sure your AAA membership is paid up, and take a few other phone numbers with you for a few DeLorean Service Centers. Rob, Joe, Don, and Stephen will all do their best to help you over the phone. You may also want to contact a few DeLorean clubs that are on your travel route. I know there is a Ohio club, and DeLorean MidAtlantic for PA and NJ. I don't know if this is true, maybe someone else can verify. Personally I believe strongly in Textron brand cleaner. When I cleaned my fuel injection system after reassembling my D, I put a bottle (maybe 2) in the tank with a couple gallons of fuel. I bypassed the pump and ran it until I could hear it return to the fuel tank. I let it sit for a couple days and cycled it again. I ran the car on the higher strength cleaner for a while before diluting the mixture. The car ran fine after that. Of course, your results may vary. I dont think Eleanor lives on the island (long island) any more, but I assume it still has the same name. I am happy with the performance. When I purchased my car, it had the turbos already installed on it, so I am not a good source for installation tips. I believe that Rob Grady did the installation on my car for the previous owner. About 2 years ago, Rob updated my older version of the kit to reinstall the O2 sensor, and associated components so I could pass inspection. I opted not to install the CAT's because it was expensive, and eliminated the mufflers making the car louder than it already is with the turbos. Noise level is my only complaint about the system. Even with the mufflers instead of the CAT's it is still a bit noisy for my taste. I have seen a number of single turbo installations that looked great. They seem to need much less modification to install, and I would expect similar performance because the boost is limited to 6Lbs anyway. A single turbo can produce 6Lbs with no problem. In my version of the Island turbo (I assume it is still the same) both turbos are the same size, so it not as if they were designed to reduce turbo lag. I would go as far to say that the off the line performance (0-20) may be a bit worse than a stock delorean due to the lag. Once the RPM's are above 3K or so, all is wonderful. I would recommend the Island Turbos, but in my case I did not have the luxury of researching it before buying it (it came with the car!), if I had to do it myself I may have chosen a single turbo setup. As I said, the single turbo looks like it requires less modification, and I suspect it would be less expensive. There were a few factory prototypes that were sold after DMC and Legend industries (the contractor for DMC turbo design) closed up. It is a remote possibility that the car could be one of those prototypes. If it is, the VIN should be in the low 500 range. It is possible to get locked in the car. This happens when the crappy Lucas relays fail, and the lock solenoid stays energized. I would guess it is also possible that it could cause a fire when the solenoid coil gets too hot. If this happens, you could just reach behind the seat, and pull out the door lock relay module. The most common fix is to replace the Lucas relay with a Bosch. There are also "solid state" relays available now that should just plug in as a relay would. You can also get a Lockzilla from PJ Grady which will prevent this problem, along with a few other lock related problems. The Lockzilla is the preferred, and more expensive solution. When I purchased my car, it had the bosch relays installed, but after I had one of my solenoids go bad on me, I had the lockzilla installed. I have never been locked in the car. It's a white, 2 prong plug, hanging down about 5 inches from the area of the distributor. I have a 5spd, is this for the automatics? Or should this probably be plugged into something? Also, anybody know what the connector in the left side of the transmission is for? I didn't think there was any electric hardware involved in the manual gearbox. I spotted a DMC for sale at an import shop just west of Midland, Michigan. If anybody is interested in more info, feel free to email me. It's VIN 5288, grey interior, 5spd, lines in hood. I am far from a DeLorean mechanic, but the green stuff leaking from the water pump housing is an easy fix. (A new water pump). As far as the blue smoke, it may be as simple as valve seals or perhaps worn rings, still not a disaster. Most are certified appraisers and reasonably priced and will call you when they get there with a condition report. I have used a guy from Walpole, Mass. on a few occasions, and worked out well. E-Mail me if you need his name. A second thought AAA Plus will tow you 100 miles a day. My son had his car towed 300 miles home from college (of course it took 3 days) Hope this helps!
