Remove the fuel pump cover and attach a test light to the electrical connections and insure that the pump is operating while you are attempting to start the engine. Here are the facts. The PRV-6 B-27 began production in the mid seventies and later was up graded to the B-28F, although manufactured for Volvo, Renault, & Peugot 98% of these engines were installed in Volvo's. In 1979 Is was discovered that many of the engines failed prematurely due to cam shaft failure, so an up graded hardened cam shaft was fitted to all PRV's produce after 79-80. Fortunately this happened prior to the DeLorean application of these engines. Because of the high rate of failure of the early "soft cams" the PRV absorbed a bad reputation. Many mechanics who know the early PRV assume that the DeLorean PRV will suffer the same fate. Not so! There are many D's running around with mileage's exceeding 100K. Case in point, our DeLorean, it now has over 260K miles and still going. The fact is that the PRV-6 installed in all DeLoreans is one of the most reliable engines ever produced. When these hoses leak coolant will pool at the top of the engine block. Engine heating this coolant would explain your "slight antifreeze-like smell". To isolate the problem you will need to perform a cooling system pressure test. If you don't have a tester go to your favorite auto service facility and ask them to pressure test your cooling system. To determine if the water pump is leaking you will need to look at the "weep hole" which is located just behind the pulley under the underside of the main shaft. Date: Friday, August 20, 1999 11:50 PM After driving yesterday in the 100+ degree Texas heat, I noticed a slight antifreeze-like smell in the garage. Sure enough, today I found a few ounces of the green stuff on the garage floor. It wasn't leaking at the time, but when I removed the radiator cap (resevoir cap?) the fluid started flowing freely. I can't see exactly where from, but it's on the ignition-timing marks and is dripping from just above. Since all the hoses are six months old, I'm inclined to believe that my water pump has failed. So my question to you, dear reader, is: do you agree with my diagnosis? And if so, do you think I should attempt to tackle this problem myself? And how many beers will it require? It is an unofficial term that has been used by mechanics when dealing with the CIS injection system. Here is the lowdown. All internal combustion engines require adjustment of the fuel to air ratio to compensate for varying conditions. In the DeLorean there are several electrical and mechanical items that effect fuel enrichment. In other words the "fuel enrichment circuit" can involve any of the following components. Warmup regulator, full throttle micro-switch, control pressure regulator, frequency valve, thermal vacuum control valve, O2 sensor, Lambda ECU, full throttle micro switch, several hoses, sensors, and wires. Could this cause a fast idle condition? The reason for the question is that a friend just purchased a "D" and has had a problen with fast idle (12 to 1500 RPM measured with an external tach). The tach on the dash reads about double the measured RPM. He has replaced the idle control motor, coil, fuel pump, fuel filter and several other components. The throtle cable moves freely and the linkage doesn't seem to hang up any place. The micro switch is operating when it should. The frequency valve appears to be working in that you can hear the change in frequency as the engine warms up. He has not been able to get the dwell set due to the high idle speed. I have searched the back issues of the DMCnews & it looks like he has covered most of the bases that have been tried before. He's getting rather discouraged & I'm about out of ideas. ANY suggestions would be appreciated (well, almost any). I got them from tirerack.com, and were shipped to my door in less than 3 days. My overall rating on a scale of 1 to 10, would be an 8 or 9! They handle far better than the Michellin XGTs that the previous owner had installed, and the ride quality is also slightly better (softer rubber). Also, the Michellin tires were 205/60-14 on the front (one size over stock). Dropping to 195/60-14 makes the car noticably easier to steer. That's a nice plus. The only downside to the tires is their life. They have a treadwear of 160, while most new Hondas and Toyotas come with tires rated at 300-400! Oh well, it's such a sweet handling and riding tire, that I would recommend it in spite of its short life.
