This engine design was a extension of the “swash plate” design in air conditioning compressors. The main challenges in this design are cooling and the amount of pressure the plate could handle and convert into rotational torque. This concept works well with total submersion in AC coolant and the little torque necessary for compressing a gas, but the forces for moving a car and orders of magnitude larger. Could it have worked? A prototype would have been interesting to develop and test. As an interesting side story, I recently met a research engineer from Oldsmobile. Many years ago, they built a V8 engine that was also roller bearing so it had minimal friction and was more fuel efficient. Did it work? Yes, but it was very noisy because you did not have an oil “cushion” to damp out many “new” noises that are transferred with such bearings. My gut instinct is that the lubricants in the 1980s would not have allowed a very powerful engine of this design to function very long. Given the perspective of today’s high HP engines, I doubt that this design would have evolved. I have seen these drawings before from JZD’s notes. The are similar to AC compressors except the selection of new materials and seal design for the huge increase in pressures from an explosion, rather than compression. What interested me more, was JZDs work with Smokey Yunich and his adiabatic engine. This would have been fascinating to see developed.
